Delgado Community College
Graduates 690 Students
Delgado Community College graduated 690
students last Spring on Saturday, May 13, 2006. The
commencement included graduates who finished
their course work in Fall 2005. The Fall 2005
commencement had been cancelled due to hurricane
Katrina. Ashton Ryan, Jr., Chair of the Delgado
Foundation Board, welcomed the students. Admiral
George R. Yount, Sector Vice-President of Ship
Construction for Northrop Grumman Ship Systems,
delivered the commencement address. Following the
commencement address, Chancellor Alex Johnson
conferred the associate degrees and certificates.
Marietta College Students
Clean Up Delgado
Thirty-five students from Marietta College in Ohio
raised money to fund their trip to New Orleans in
order to assist Delgado Community College in its
recovery process. Students drove to Delgado during
their winter break in December. They remained
for five days to clean the City Park Campus and
Charity School of Nursing. The students are part of
a Leadership Program and chose to make Delgado
their leadership project after learning that a displaced
Delgado student had enrolled in Marietta College
following Katrina.
Fifty-three Delgado Community College students
received scholarship awards ranging from $250
to $500 to assist with financial aid for those
experiencing difficulty as a result of hurricanes
Katrina and Rita. The scholarships were
made possible from a grant totaling $175,000,
administered by Scholarship America. The Lumina
Foundation for Education contributed funds to the
American Association of Community Colleges to
coordinate this program.
Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund
Delgado Community College was awarded a $750,000
grant from the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund. This fund
was established by Presidents George W. Bush and
William J. Clinton and has received 60,000 donations.
The grant was to be used to assist institutions to
reestablish operations after Katrina. Delgado
Community College was allowed to use the grant for
salaries and benefits paid to retain and support faculty
and staff. The balance of the donation was used for
repairs and replacement of equipment due to physical
damage on campuses. The college has applied for
another $750,000 to restore fully its information
technology infrastructure and to provide grants to
displaced students who need help to return to Delgado.

Thomas and Dennis Woltering, starred in the Spring production.
LTC Linkage
In March, the Louisiana Community and Technical
College System Board of Directors adopted a new
“21st Century Model for the Delivery of Technical
Education” for all of the community and technical
colleges in the state. This measure will create
Regional Technical Education Centers, which will be
comprised of regional clusters of technical college
campuses linked with the community colleges to
provide administrative leadership and oversight.
Delgado Community College will work with the
LTC-District 1 Campuses for Jefferson, West
Jefferson, Slidell, and Sidney Collier. The Delgado/
LTC District 1 linkage is an exciting opportunity to
build upon the strengths and best practices of each
institution, and promote a more comprehensive
educational experience.
Local Colleges Come to Aid for
Delgado’s Displaced Students
Baton Rouge Community College Foundation Board raised $81,513
to help Delgado Community College displaced students. Students
received aid for books and supplies, clothing, grocery needs and child
care. Nicholls State University Foundation distributed $51,700 to
displaced students to continue their studies at the Thibodaux campus.
Capital One Gives Delgado a
$50,000 Grant
Capital One Financial Corporation announced on May 9, 2006 that
Delgado will receive a $50,000 grant to help repair the hurricane
damaged Moss Memorial Library on the City Park Campus. The
Library sustained over $13M in damages.
Nursing Students Receive
NCLEX-RN Review Course Free
Sylvia Rayfield, owner of Sylvia Rayfield & Associates, Inc., donated
a review course and books to the graduating nursing students affected
by Katrina. The review course is to help students prepare for their
NCLEX-RN, which is their licensure examination. The course is
worth $279 and 147 students participated, bringing the value of this
donation to $41,013.
Baseball America presented a check to Delgado at the New Orleans Zepher’s
baseball game. Pictured from left are: Tommy Smith, two representatives

Donation for Baseball Team and
Scholarships
Richard C. Colton, Jr., founder of The Howell Group, L.L.C., has
donated $40,000 to Delgado Community College. The baseball
team will receive $35,000 and $5,000 will be dedicated to the
Delgado’s Tuition Assistance Program. In addition, Baseball America
contributed $12,500 for the restoration of historic Kirsch-Rooney
Stadium.
Enrollment Services Receives Gift
Education Systems, Inc. has gifted Delgado Community College
with EMAS online, worth a value of $51,700. EMAS online is a
recruitment tool to help enrollment services communicate with
current and prospective students.
Statement from the Chancellor
We are delighted to share with you the first addition of the Foundation Newsletter following Hurricane Katrina. The articles reflect the volunteer and financial
support provided to the college following this natural disaster. This support
is emblematic of the generosity provided to the Greater New Orleans Region.
There were approximately 358,000 acts of volunteerism by individuals and
groups, and half of these acts were carried out by college students. In response
Delgado Community College is expanding its Service Learning Program to help
students understand the importance of giving back as the need arises.
Dr. Alex Johnson
The future for the college looks very bright. The enrollment is recovering. As
more as more individuals return to the community, our numbers will increase. I
thank you for your support and commitment to the long term well-being of our
college and our community.
We would like to express our sincere appreciation to all those who have given to Delgado Community College during
our recovery from Hurricane Katrina.
