Inside Outside Office Design
Baroda Ventures Office
Rios Clementi Hale Studios—Los Angeles-based architecture and landscape
architecture firm—was hired by David Bohnett for the office renovation after
completing two homes, as well as the office for his previous company GeoCities.
In need of seismic upgrades, the two-story brick office building originally
included ground-level retail space and a maze of small offices above. Located in
a densely developed, highly trafficked commercial area with adjacent buildings
to the immediate north and south, the original interior layout offered minimal
light to enter each room.
Extensive reorganization results in a large executive office with private
restroom, conference room, reception area, nine private offices, and four open
workstations. Kitchenette and restrooms are offered on each floor. Courtyards
on either side of the building provide informal gathering spaces for employees
and visitors, while an exterior staircase connects the two levels.
Rios Clementi Hale Studios adapted a surprising, yet delightful, combination
of retro and contemporary styles for the renovation of the two-story Baroda
Ventures office. The architects applied several themes throughout the design—
classic modern furnishings with unexpected fabrics, elaborate ceiling medallions
and doors escutcheons, glossy surfaces, and repeated patterning at various
scales—while incorporating plentiful daylight. Timeless elegance was achieved
by pairing traditional essentials with the latest in design to create a place of
sophisticated opulence.
An existing architectural element — an iron quatrefoil — was used by the
architects as a leitmotif throughout the design. Gold quatrefoil patterns adorn
white wallpaper in the conference room. The pattern recurs at the back of the
building with a white-painted iron screen made into a small awning for the back
door. Quatrefoils have also been etched in the concrete of the building’s rear
façade.

Stone Designs
Roberto Murgia
Stone Designs is the story of two creators (Cutu Mazuelos 1973 and
Eva Prego 1974) who in September 1995 started their adventure by
creating their own studio, in order to develop their projects from a
personal perspective, without censureship or interference. For this
reason they never worked for anyone else and they forged their
apprenticeship as it was done in the past, from below and with a lot of sacrifice. They began by
doing interior designs, stands and displays. This field served them during the first years of their
career, experimenting and studying different languages, showing a new understanding of design
and our relationship with it.
Born in Cagliari in 1972, he graduated in Architecture in Genoa. In 1997, he
moved to Milan, where he worked with various different Studios, including
Stefano Boeriand Piuarch. In 2002, he founded studio FASE with Luca Bucci,
an Interdisciplinary Studio that deals with Architecture and Urban Planning and
develops projects of various scales. In 2009, he left studio FASE to concentrate
on Architecture, Interiors and Design. Over recent years, he has completed
several important projects, such as the restructuring of a hotel in the Lake
Como area and the new headquarters of EDI (Effetti Digitali Italiani). Since2005, he has designed
the Muji sales outlets in Italy and, since 2009, in France too. He is currently developing a project for
a residential district in the south of Milan, an auditorium and some lofts in Milan.
