2014 Annual Report - Schlitz Audubon Nature Center
2014 Annual Report
Schlitz Audubon Nature Center connects people
with nature and inspires them to become responsible
stewards of the natural world.
Dear Community,
Dear Friends,
What a successful year it has been at
the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center! We
enjoyed expanded programming, visitor and
member rolls, and a festive and successful
Gala that helped end our fiscal year on a
high note. And, after many years of ongoing
discussions, effective July 1 we were able
to secure an updated partnership with
the National Audubon Society that increased our local control over
Center operations and assures that National Audubon will be a key
strategic partner in the years ahead.
But what has made Schlitz Audubon such a jewel on our lakefront
is the strong tradition we have of local support from our team of
dedicated employees, members, volunteers and benefactors who
appreciate that Schlitz Audubon is one of the things that makes
Milwaukee a great place to live and work. So I want to send a
special thanks to every volunteer who worked on hands and knees
in our 185 acre sanctuary, every Schlitz Audubon teacher who
inspired kids and families to treasure our natural world, every staff
member who kept our beautiful, energy efficient building humming,
every bird lover who meticulously cared for our 15 raptors, and so
many more! It is only with your unwavering support that we are able
to constantly expand our offering of programs and services to the
Milwaukee community.
I also want to send my sincere and personal thanks to the entire
Board of Directors. Their selfless gifts of time, talent, and treasure
are propelling Schlitz Audubon into a new era and, fortunately for
me, they also are a lot of fun to work with! With the leadership of our
Executive Director Nathan Smallwood, our Board is opening doors to
other educational and environmental organizations and seeking new
ways to expand the impact of our wonderful Center.
On behalf of our dedicated Board and staff, we invite you to sample
our programs and prairies, our boardwalks and bridges, our raptors
and ravines, the Lake Michigan shoreline, and last but not least, the
friendship of all the other nature lovers at the Center. Thanks for your
continued support and I look forward to seeing you at the Schlitz
Audubon!
Timothy J. Gerend President
Friends of Schlitz Audubon Nature Center
Thanks to you, this past year was one of the
most successful in our history. Together we
served over a hundred thousand toddlers,
preschoolers, school children, families, and
adults from throughout the region.
We serve with a renewed sense of purpose
and direction. In the first full year of our
strategic plan we made great progress. The Board of Directors
negotiated a historic new operating agreement with our closest
partner, National Audubon Society. The Center will work closely with
National Audubon toward our shared vision in conservation, with
special attention and focus upon birds. This arrangement ensures
local autonomy that reflects the Center’s long history of financial
self-sufficiency. We are a community asset; all dollars remain local.
The Center also made great strides in programs this past year.
Our nationally-acclaimed preschool was a founding partner in
the creation of a nature preschool collaborative, Natural Start
Alliance. The Center’s raptor program added three amazing birds
to its collection: a Peregrine Falcon named after recently departed
naturalist and friend, Noel Cutright; a Northern Saw-Whet Owl
named after one of the Center’s founders, “Dory” Vallier; and, an
intelligent and curious American Crow, Loki. Our birds continue
extensive flight training to provide the most exciting avian programs
of any nature center.
Stewardship of our distinctive land is paramount. Our preserve is
the most important wildlife oasis and corridor in the county, and
is recognized as an official Important Bird Area due to its location
along a bird and butterfly migratory super-highway. The property
also represents the southernmost gateway to the great northern
forests system (think Door Co. or northern Minnesota) that stretches
the continent. It all begins right here, along the lake.
With Emerald Ash Borer nearly upon us, we will likely lose our
significant ash canopy. However, our innovative land management
plan envisions using this disruption to accelerate the intended
restoration toward original and endangered habitats that were
not ash-dominated. With support from the community, we will
transform this looming crisis into an opportunity to recapture our
natural heritage and preserve it for generations to come.
Thank you for supporting Schlitz Audubon Nature Center and
the unique and important role we provide. It is an honor to serve
greater Milwaukee and to share this irreplaceable and worthy
treasure.
