Benevolent & Protective Order Of Elks - Rapid City, South Dakota THE Volume 33, No. 2 RAPID CITY ELK HEARD 605-393-1187 • www.rcelks.org January 2014 August 2015 Been missing meetings? Come Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. Well here we are in August already! We had a great July with the fireworks and plenty of golf. I want to tell Aaron and all of his staff ‘Thank You’ for doing such a wonderful job during the holiday festivities and keeping our beautiful golf course playable. I would also like to thank Bob Windjue and the Base folks for helping with the fishing tournament, Damon Ausmann, Howie Rice, the Does, our own Troop 1187, Dennis Riske and the rest of the officers for doing an outstanding job. If I missed anyone please accept my apologies! Not a whole lot of activities going on this month except some great golf tournaments. Just a reminder that we only have the one lodge meeting this month and it will be on the third Wednesday Aug. 19 -- vacations, Rally time, etc. -- conflicts dictate a change, so mark your calendars NOW! Please contact Sandy to volunteer to help or participate. In June, the Rapid City Drove #33 ritual team was at its best for the Sunday night memorial service at Grand Lodge in Albuquerque, N.M., Performing the Elks Rest. President Karyl Shanahan, was composed and confident as she led the ceremony. Supreme Musician, Bonnie Stratton, kept us all in step as we marched around the large room. Other members of the team were: Jean Gilmore, JoAnne Bennington, Sandy McDonald, Karlene Schmidt, Cathy Williams, Dianne Labor, Linda Trankle, Robin Sutton, Bert Reichert, Myrna Meyers, Mary Taylor, Ilene Johnson, Nelva Blenner and Milly Blum. We appreciate Winner Drove #238 members Rhonda Schroeder and Joyce Heath for completing our team. As we filed out, the audience rose in a standing ovation. That was the beginning of our proud week. On Monday morning we were bursting with pride as we witnessed Karyl receiving the Grand Lodge password. The thrill continued as Supreme President Trinka Dee Stafford gave the password, for the first time, to five-year chaplains, among whom was our own Jean Gilmore. How can a group our size keep a secret? We know we can and did! Linda Trankle, was honored with the membership LOYALTY award. Amidst all the tears and congratulations Linda was heard to say, “Even my sister didn’t tell me!” Wednesday we proudly watched our own Mary Taylor use sign language as she interpreted Trinka’s song “Imagine.” Cathy Williams and Mary Taylor were honored with appointments to Grand Lodge committees. Keeping track of their special DOES were Dean Reichert, Stan Blum, Brett Sutton and Tom Bennington. Thanks guys! DOES IS OUR NAME -- BENEVOLENCE IS OUR GAME! (One of them) We are pleased to announce three really easy projects. All Elks, families and friends are encouraged to assist us with these projects. 1. Debbie Pasqual has stepped up to take care of collecting pop tops from cans for the Ronald McDonald House. Please save your tops and turn them in to her or to the houses from Ronald McDonald that are available at the Elks Club. Another way to help us is sell your cans and send the money to BPO Drove #33, PO Box 2835, Rapid City, SD 57709. 2. We have found a source for recycling medicine bottles (clear or amber colored). Please wash, if possible. Boiling may help to remove labels. Members who collect the bottles will also remove labels. Bring to Karlene or any Benevolent committee member. 3. We are collecting broken and unused crayons. If possible leave the label on, because it makes it easier to sort. The only crayons that are NOT accepted are those made outside the US. For information go to: www.crazy-crayons.com The Drove will box up the crayons and ship them by USPS flat-rate box to: CRAYON RECYCLE PROGRAM, 2464 DOWNHILL DR. NO. 3, STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO 80487. If you choose to ship them yourself, notify Karlene Schmidt or any DOE. Donna Labor, Reporter Yeah! The raffle ended. During the July 3 Independence Day celebration, Stan Blum presented Commander Mike Ball and John Wheeler from American Legion Post 22 with the keys to the 1977 Marketeer golf cart Blum donated to the fundraiser. The new, souped-up red golf cart was won by Secretary Dennis Riske. Larrry Cvancara won the season golf pass. Awesome conditions await August golfers Hello Golfers, August is here and we are in full swing here at the course. August is one of the best months of the year to play golf and I hope everyone can get out and enjoy a round soon. The course is in awesome condition! We have several events for you to play in this month: Aug. 9 -- Does Two- Person Scramble; Aug. 15-16 Men’s and Ladies’ Club Championships. Hope to see you golfing soon! Aaron and the entire golf staff Don’t forget All Golf Shop Credits and Gift Certificates expire Oct. 31, 2015. No exceptions! Around the Lodge in bits and pieces The annual rant is overdue! How many meetings have you attended in the last fraternal year? Do you like what is happening with your lodge? You have to participate to earn the right to criticize! Your patronage is greatly appreciated in the dining room and lounge and it is always a pleasure to see members (of the lodge and the public) and their guests on certainly one of the best golf courses in South Dakota. It is to be hoped you are sharing those activities with friends and neighbors. But, being a member of Elks Lodge 1187 is more than paying annual dues or bragging about the facilities! The hardworking officers and lodge trustees invest their time and effort every week and every month to make sure all of the many parts of the lodge are operating in the best possible ways to servce the membership and the greater community through outreach programs for adults and for youngsters as well. Can’t you find 30 minutes or a bit more, twice a month (or once a month in July and August) to show your support and respect for those elected to lead? They shouldn’t and can’t do it all. Fortunately many of you volunteer throughout the year in many quiet ways and your efforts are appreciated. More of you are needed. If you haven’t done so in a while, come out to a meeting, make your voice heard. Offer suggestions and share ideas for activities or ways to improve the lodge; it is your responsibility as a member. Remember, Elks care and Elks share, and that includes you. One member who doesn’t need reminding about responsibility is National Veterans Service Chairman Neil Harris who, along with Tim and Paula Werlinger, served hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, potato and macaroni salads, and baked beans pro- Russ Rearick July Elk of Month Every year, Russ Rearick and his Scholarship Committee review and ponder endlessly over applications they receive from students throughout the area. As a token thank you, ER Gerald Cummings selected Brother Rearick as his Elk of the Month for July. Thanks from all of us, Russ. You fellows perform a great service for the lodge and the students. vided by Mak to more than 70 veterans and staff at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center in June. In early June Harris delivered clothing donated by Merna Zandstra and Gary and Cathy Gross to the Hot Springs VA Medical Center (Fort Meade currently has more than is needed). In mid-June Harris was host to 10 vets, one family member and a staff member at the monthly bingo night. He served donuts and sodas and distributed $70 in cash prizes. He also delivered magazines and calendars donated by Robert Bond, Bill and June Fish, Patrick and Nancy Malone, Pat and Barb Miller, Morris and Lynn Most, Steve and Janet Sibell and Brett and Robin Sutton. Harris told the lodge in July that Sam’s Club has donated $40 in gift cards to provide items for the vets at Fort Meade for special needs. He thanked Mary Cummings for arranging for the donation. (By the way Harris also attends meetings.) Sally Farrar, Heard Editor
