Sustainable Tourism Award Stirk House Hotel www.lidun-group.co.uk/stirk/ Stirk House Hotel sets itself apart from other tourism providers with its commitment to implementing sustainable policies and practices throughout its business; from the management of energy, waste and water consumption through to food provision, and conservation work in the gardens and grounds to enhance biodiversity. They understand that the environment, local community and employees are vital to their business’s success and endeavour to maintain a positive balance in all of those areas. Contribution to the AONB • The hotel grounds are a wildlife haven with over 5000 indigenous trees, plants and wild flowers that encourage bees and other pollinating insects, complete with a wildlife trail and hide • Work with the Owl Trust has been undertaken to help protect the nesting barn owls • Head chef Chris Dobson is passionate about using local, seasonal produce and works intently to find local suppliers, ensuring they serve the freshest ingredients with minimal packaging and transportation 1 The Stirk House Hotel achievement is inspiring, and many of its practices should be replicated by others. • Two new biomass boilers have been installed, reducing their annual carbon emissions by an estimated 37% • Guests are encouraged to enjoy car-free activities during their stay, including walks and cycle routes which start and finish in the hotel grounds. Walkers, cyclists and four-legged friends are all welcomed at Stirk House and their drying and storage facilities encourage this 2 It employs local people who convey Bowland’s sense of place; they grow fruit and vegetables and source food as locally as possible, the menus reflecting and celebrating the seasons.
