almost expected in any hotel you visit.”
Much research was undergone to specify the right
lighting and consequently award-winning UK manufacturers PhotonStar were chosen because their
LED products could completely fulfil the complex
design requirements, delivering consistent high
performance and quality.
Originally a famous London jazz venue, the divine Wellesley Hotel
opened its expensive doors last month following a £36 million building refurbishment which included the installation of PhotonStar LED
luminaires.
The prestigious 5* hotel, previously a restaurant, nestles in a prime
location overlooking Hyde Park in Knightsbridge and boasts some
unique qualities, from the cigar terraces to its own Rolls-Royce service! The hotel, named after the first Duke of Wellington Sir Arthur
Wellesley, is owned by Arab Investments’ City and Country Hotels.
It provides a personal experience to customers by offering just 36
luxurious suites, ranging from one bedroom to a vast four bedroom
penthouse.
When it came to the design of the masterpiece hotel Arab Investments chose interior designers ‘Fox Linton’ and developers ‘Rhimesong’, who aimed to combine contemporary and classic design
styles by mixing the buildings art deco jazz heritage with a glamorous modern twist.
The lighting design was crucial when it came to achieving this desired style and ambience throughout the hotel.
Award-winning lighting designers ‘It does Lighting’ were chosen to
tackle a very challenging design brief; to create an all LED design
which had to have the ‘wow’ factor, deliver excellent energy efficiency and remain within a limited budget. The brief also specified that
the LED lighting had to mimic the traditional ‘look and feel’ of Halogen downlights whilst providing superior performance, warm colour
temperature and sufficient spread of light.
The brief requirements made the project unique particularly because, at the time of specification, complete LED design within a
hotel was still a relatively new concept; the benefits of energy reduction and low maintenance were often overlooked and cheaper, less
efficient products were opted for.

PhotonStar were also asked to
supply light engines for statement bespoke chandeliers which
were carefully placed throughout
the main hotel spaces, further
enhancing the exquisite modern style and allowing even the
decorative elements of the hotel
design to be as energy efficient
as possible.
In addition to the all-LED design,
other unique features of the
hotel include a private heated
cigar terrace with cigars sold
on a stick-by-stick basis and a
Crystal bar with a Whisky and
Cognac wall. There is also an
Oval restaurant serving refined
Italian cuisine and a Jazz room
showcasing established and upand-coming Jazz acts.
With the PhotonStar LED solution installed, the Wellesley hotel
enjoys energy savings up to 85%
against typical halogen bulbs, no
lamp replacements and dramatically low maintenance. These advantages reduce overall project
cost considerably and payback
for the solution is rapid at just
under 2 years; ideal benefits with
a limited budget.
The PhotonStar luminaires also
provide flexibility and the right
quality of light desired, whilst
offering high outputs and wide
beam angle options which
reduces the number of fittings
needed. In addition, their colour
temperature is warm at 3000K
and invites guests inside, allowing them to feel right at home in
London’s latest 5* hotel.
