Annual Report 2012 - Marion Cultural Alliance
Annual Report 2012
February 27, 2013
Dear Members,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support
and involvement in the Marion Cultural Alliance. As one of the
founding members, it has been my pleasure to watch the growth of
not only this organization but of many of our artist members as well.
I thank you also for your volunteer hours that have been logged and
your commitment to our mission and the activities that propel us
forward.
I have had the great pleasure of serving on what has to be the “best”
board ever! Not only do we enjoy each other and are collectively
committed to this organization, we have worked successfully to meet
our ultimate goal of being able to provide grants to and advocate for
a variety of arts organizations. MCA has enabled many groups to bring programming and arts education to
our community that would not have been possible without our funding. I am particularly excited as this next
year will bring us very close to meeting our endowment goal that was set from our inception. As this goal is
met we will continue to have a cultural impact in Marion County for many years to come.
I am honored to have been selected as the Chairman during this very important time in MCA’s history and in
our city, as they work to create an awareness and appreciation of the arts in our public spaces. I am
committed to encouraging partnerships that will aid these efforts.
I look forward to a colorful and vibrant 2013! I have to thank all of you whose tireless dedication and work
have gotten us to this point. Our volunteers, members, Board of Directors, former Board members (who
continue to remain totally committed), our “right arm”, Terry Miller, and to John Hunt , Chairman of the
Board, for always being there and guiding us through with a steady hand and voice of reason. I only hope to be
able to continue the tradition of the great leadership I have known at MCA for many years!
I am excited about working with each and every one of you to continue our artistic journey within our
community!
Sincerely,
Laurie W. Zink, 2013 Chairman

Dear Members,
Sometimes I am asked, “What good is art, anyway?” I believe art is a necessity that
enriches our lives in so many ways. It is the diversity in form that paradoxically provides
common ground to unite us a community. It drives economic growth and serves as a
reflection of the soul of our community. We are indeed blessed to have so many forms
of visual and performing arts here. We would look very bland and sterile without them!
Marion Cultural Alliance’s mission is, in short, to promote a healthy arts community in
Ocala and Marion County. We are truly fortunate to have an energetic and dedicated
Board of Directors who have given of their time and talent to make our past year
successful. The Board has had two strategic planning and brainstorming sessions to develop fresh ideas for
new events. A new event started in 2012 was the Alliance Assembly, an opportunity for all members to learn
more about Marion Cultural Alliance progress and to provide a forum for artists and other members to get to
know each other better. Expect more new ways to celebrate the arts!
With Horse Fever 10th Anniversary last year, we were able to grow our endowment fund to over $800,000 and
we are targeting a goal of $1,000,000 to continue to provide cultural grants to deserving organizations.
Speaking of cultural grants, while Saluting the Arts in September was not quite as well attended as the prior
year, it was considered well done by all reports. Thanks, Lydia Kuttas, for your guidance and direction in
putting on a quality event. The Board will be working to again put on an outstanding event and boost
attendance in 2013.
Our Wine and Art series provides the opportunity to see fine art and taste fine wines in the comfort of the
hosts’ homes. Thanks, Jessica McCune, for your dedication on this project.
Two of our directors have terms that expire this year. We are extremely thankful for the commitment and
effort by Rich Schleicher and our Treasurer, Daryl Collier. Lydia Kuttas will also be leaving us and we are very
grateful for her contribution to our success.
I am enthusiastically looking forward to an interesting and gratifying year under the leadership of our
Chairperson-Elect, Laurie Zink. Laurie has been an active contributor to all events sponsored by Marion
Cultural Alliance and I know we will be in good hands under her direction.
Thanks to all who made 2012 an exciting and successful year!
Sincerely,
John R. Hunt
2012 Chairman of the Board

Horse Fever 10th Anniversary
Sponsored by Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association
On March 23, 2012, the Live Oak International Combined Driving Event once again hosted the auction of the new herd
into their weekend of festivities, attracting horse lovers, art lovers, and philanthropists. As was done 10 years ago, MCA
shared ½ of the proceeds, $208,000 total, with each buyer’s 2nd local charity of choice, ultimately benefitting 17
charitable organizations. When the final gavel fell on the 10th Anniversary public art project, total monies raised over the
10 year effort approached $2 million.
MCA recognizes the success of this project is due to a broad range of very generous community support, celebrating the
talent and vibrancy of Ocala’s visual artists in such a beneficial way.
STUDENT HORSES
A new aspect of the project was three horses created by students at Madison Street Academy Elementary and Westport
High – Marion County public schools that serve as arts magnets, and the exceptional students at Hillcrest School. All of
the proceeds from the auction of these three were given to the Marion Public Education Foundation to be used for arts,
and equipment to assist students at Hillcrest with non-verbal communication. Sponsors of this effort were DeLuca
Toyota and Heritage Bank.
Tour de Horse
Another element introduced in the anniversary project was Tour de Horse, a rally
style event that took place in February. Participants checked in at MCA’s Brick City
Center for the Arts, and were given a rally sheet and a map of the horse locations, or
used the interactive online map hosted by Horse Fever’s Community Sponsor,
Ocala.com.
Each horse was marked with a special code which those on the “tour” collected,
turning in their completed sheets at the final destination, Artful Gifts at Circle Square
Commons, MCA’s home in West Ocala. As people traveled from horse to horse,
several sponsors and artists were there to meet and greet. In addition, visitors could use their smart phones to read QR
codes that were placed on each horse’s base that linked visitors to artists’ statements and photos in progress at
Ocala.com.
Great prizes were donated for the drawing for those who collected every code. Thanks to all of the Horse Fever
volunteers and sponsors who helped with this fun day out.

Farewell to the Herd
MCA would like to thank the Hiton of Ocala for hosting the week long event that allowed the public to have one last look
at their favorite horse.
Co-Chairs Paula King and Laurie Zink, and Honorary Chairman E.L. Foster would like to thank Tammy Griffin, Jessica
McCune, Gerald Ergle, Denise Robinson, Stew Robinson, Rus Adams, Chris Bricker, Leslie Scales, Kent Weakley and the
Board of Directors for their tireless 18 month commitment to this project.
HORSE FEVER IS: the artists, volunteers, horse sponsors, program sponsors, horse buyers, the City of Ocala, media, and
of course the public who came out to enjoy the project. A special and sincere note of thanks goes to our Community
Sponsor, Ocala.com for their continued coverage and web hosting of Horse Fever, 10 years ago, and today. Thank you
for making Horse Fever relevant to our community.

MARKETING
MCA took a giant leap forward this year, using the momentum from Horse Fever to coordinate and optimize media
assets, including the MCAOcala.com, social media, print and e-marketing with database activity.
The launch of the new Website, designed by Mary Verrandeaux, improved service to members and member groups
across the board. An interactive calendar, the ability to join or renew memberships online, and make donations online;
are a few features of the improved site. News, photos, and basic information about MCA, the galleries, and other info is
now instantly accessible along with archival information. A print membership brochure, also designed by Mary
Verrandeaux, will serve as a functional tool in gaining and maintaining memberships.
New database software was also brought online in order to better track and maintain relationships with members and
donors. The coordination of these efforts positions MCA to move forward into the future with its mission of increased
and sustaining funding and support of the local arts community.
Plans for 2013 include loading more archival information into the site, keeping current, and working with our member
groups to affect their increased use of the site. Thanks to Rus Adams, Tammy Griffin, Terry Miller and the Board of
Directors for your input and assistance in these giant and much needed steps forward.

Paula King

Uniting Culture and Community
Culture Builds Juried Art
Show
MCA Hosts Exchange
Students
MCA and the City of Ocala
partnered in the fall of 2012 to
bring our community a juried art
competition series called “Culture
Builds”.
Brick City Center for the Arts and
Extensions Dance Studio had the
pleasure, last summer, of hosting
activities for over 100 foreign
exchange students from Spain,
China, and France. The student’s
trip to Ocala was sponsored by
Educational Homestay Programs,
a nonprofit division of Education
First. Students were here to learn
about our history, culture, and
practice their language and
communication skills.
The Mission of “Culture Builds” is to
execute a juried art show series
that raises the bar for local
competition and attracts regional
artist participation through
excellent management practices,
respected judges, education
(critique), awards program, and a
reception representative of Ocala’s
Culture.
The first of the series opened with a
smashing reception in November
with the Westport High School
orchestra entertaining the masses
as they enjoyed local cuisine and
took an art-guided tour of Ocala’s
City Hall.
Many of MCA’s own participating
and placing in the competition:
Celeste Stadler, Best in Show, Eddie
Franklin, third place, Bonnie Eads,
an Award of Excellence, Honorable
Mentions - Nancy Moskovitz and
collaborative friends Linda Harlow,
and Renzo Seravalle.
2013 will bring two more in the
series of three with “Inspiring
Spaces” and “Evolved Play” also
being located in City spaces.
While the students visited with
their host families, both were
encouraged to enjoy dancing at
the dance studio and painting
horse figurines with our own
Horse Fever Artists Diane Cahal
and Marlene Jacobowitz. At MCA
the exchange students learned a
little about our history and Horse
Fever; then showed off their
creativity by painting their own
horse figurines.
While the horses dried their talent
continued when they gathered at
the piano for an old fashioned
sing along to modern music. They
had a wonderful time at the
gallery, Extensions Dance Studios,
and Ocala.
Healing Heart Returns to
Brick City Center for the
Arts
The fourth annual Healing Heart
exhibit came back to the MCA
gallery reminding us to celebrate
the power of healing through the
arts. This project features the
work of many groups of clients
and patients; ranging from
battered children and adults to
troubled teens, Alzheimer and
Dementia patients, caregivers,
addicts, prisoners, both men and
women, the physically or
mentally challenged and autistic
children, just to name a few. The
programs that treat these
populations have an artist work
with their clients to create their
own art piece. Many of these
“artists” have never held a brush
in their life! Their painting is
accompanied by a written piece
that outlines their creative
journey. The results are an exhibit
that moves many to action;
whether it is with their own
personal issues or to become
involved in assisting with one of
these local programs. Healing
Heart is co-sponsored by the
Marion County Mental Wellness
Coalition and the Centers.

Fifth Annual Saluting the Arts Luncheon and Expo
Saluting The Arts luncheon was once again held at the Ocala Hilton on September 12th,
2012. Saluting the Arts is one of MCA's annual signature fundraisers. STA's main focus is not
only to celebrate and recognize culture and arts in our community, but to also award Cultural
Grants to local arts organizations. A total of $15,000 in grants was awarded to the following:
Central Florida Master Choir - $2500
City of Ocala Cultural Event - $2000
Marion Ballet - $1800
Marion Chamber Music Society - $500
Marion Civic Chorale - $500
Marion County School Student Tile Project - $700
Ocala Civic Theatre - $4000
Ocala Story Telling Festival - $500
Ocala Symphony - $2500
MCA also had the honor of presenting the check to the recipient of the Marion County Public
Education Foundation Grant provided by the sale of the Horse Fever “School Horses” to
Westport High School for “Wolf Pack on Wheels” that will be a mobile performing/fine art venue to be utilized
throughout the community for multiple projects. Saluting the Arts continues to grow as it was evident in the amount of
grants awarded and the large number of returning luncheon attendees.
The 2012 Expo showcased many of the arts organizations in Marion County with their representations of visual and
performing arts including the Westport High School orchestra and “living statues”.
The silent auction was well received as was the tickets that were sold for the Board's Wine Basket. Many attendees also
won single bottles of wine. The Hilton received accolades for the fine food and service. Thank you to all for supporting
MCA and the Saluting the Arts luncheon. See you at the 2013 event.

Artist Within VII
Thank you to this year’s committee consisted of Rich Schleicher, Chair, Leslie Scales, Jessica McCune, Ronnie King, &
Lydia Kuttas.
The committee met early in 2011 and divided up the list of all Artists and Sponsors of past Artist Within events and each
party was contacted to see if they would participate in 2011/2012. Additional names were added throughout the year
for potential sponsors and artists.
The event was published in the Ocala Star Banner, Ocala Magazine and Ocala Style Magazine. In addition, the event was
promoted through MCA email blasts. A formal invitation was sent out to MCA’s mailing list.
The Auction and Gala was held at the Country Club of Ocala on January 21, 2012 with many attending the event. Eleven
artists and sponsors participated. Jim Payton was the Auctioneer. A Net Income of $7,723.00 was garnered. The Ocala
Star Banner did a follow up story of the event February 5th 2012.

Cultural Endowment Fund
In 2012, the committee members were Daryl Collier, Tom Adair and Paula King. A special thank you to them and the
fund manager Philip Olstein for the time and advice they provided.
The primary goal of the Endowment Committee is to insure arts funding in perpetuity. The longstanding goal is to reach
a base in the Endowment totaling one million dollars.
The investments grew last year to a total as of December 31, 2012 of $802,472.67 thanks to the wonderful success of
Horse Fever sales, Wine and Art participation, and under the watchful eye of our investment advisor, Philip J. Olstein.
We are looking forward to completing the goal of reaching the one million mark soon through Wine and Art, the MCA
Calendar, and other fundraisers.
Respectfully yours,
M. Theresa Baker, Endowment Chair

Membership
Welcome New Members! The 2012 Annual Holiday/Membership Party was
a success. Thank you to Rich Schleicher and Jim Posten for opening up your
home and hosting the perfect Holiday get together. Old and new members
toasted with a sweet sparkling wine coupled with some savory tasty treats.
New members enjoyed meeting the seasoned MCA members and learning
of the opportunities and benefits that membership brings. Rich and Jim’s
art collection is fabulous and Rich even showed some of his own creations.
The mood was even enhanced with a special guest – an artist friend who
was visiting from Cape Cod – whose art also adorns some of the walls.
Great time, great conversation, great food, great fun and friends – MCA just
a happening crowd.

Wine & Art
Wine and Art are a perfect blend!
We plan for art to be presented
at each meeting and pared with
three complementary wines; we
learn about wine and art all at
once.
The group meets throughout the
year, with proceeds from the
events going towards MCA’s
Endowment, and some special
projects contribute to the Annual
Cultural Grant Campaign. We
have modified the program to
simply allow guests for $50-65 at
each event. The contributions are
tax-deductible. We are always
looking for a host to open their
home and provide the wine and
simple appetizers. MCA helps find
art to pair with the wine.
Proceeds this year totaled
$10,225. The group is casual and
meets to learn more about wine
and art. Interested parties should
contact the office at the Brick City
Center for the Arts to learn more
about this opportunity to support
MCA.
To learn more, go to
www.mcaocala.com.
Special thanks Jessica McCune,
Wine & Art Chair for developing
this important event.
