The vessel loaded steel and break bulk cargoes in China and Korea and arrived in Mobile on April 8. She loaded a cargo of woodpulp, linerboard and fluff pulp cargo and continued her maiden voyage to the Mediterranean. The new L-class vessel was built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. Ltd. in South Korea. “It’s a great honor to sponsor the STAR LINDESNES and become a part of the crew and its spirit,” said Hoyvik, vice president and general manager at Grieg Star Atlanta. “We are excited about the new L-class vessels which represent the future for Grieg Star and we also care very much about our ships and their crews.” Ship’s captain was Cesar Buhia Pasaylo, and chief engineer was Jose Lino Lopez Dela Cruz. The project manager for the vessel was Roar Fanebust. “It is a pleasure to have this naming ceremony in Mobile, a port that has been very important for Star since the 1970s,” said Grieg Star President and CEO Tom Rasmussen. “Mobile is a strategic load port in all our export services to North Europe, Mediterranean, Far East and West Coast South America and also on the import service from Brazil. We have had an excellent cooperation from the Alabama State docks in all these years.” Grieg Star operates in excess of 30 Open Hatch General Cargo Vessels and a conventional bulk fleet of 15-20 vessels. The L-class new building program includes 10 vessels scheduled for delivery during 2012 – 2014. This program represents the biggest single investment ever for the group. In addition Grieg Star took delivery in 2012 of two Supramax vessels of 58,000 dwt. ALABAMA SEAPORT • SUMMER 2013 The L-class vessels represent the 12th generation in the Grieg Star Open Hatch concept. The vessels are equipped with four, 75-ton SWL electric slewing cranes with power swivel for steady cargo handling and have completely unobstructed cargo holds for optimal cargo stowage and handling. The open hatch design is a well-proven concept and is tailor made for transportation of wood pulp and other forestry products, steel, containers and other unitized cargoes. The L-class vessels have four tween deck levels. The LINDESNES is 204.4 meters long with a beam of 32.36 meters. The vessel has nine cargo holds each with a capacity of 66.776 cubic meters. The LINDESNES has four cranes, each with a 75-ton capacity. When fully loaded, the ship is capable of speeds up to 15.5 knots. The LINDESNES is the third of 10 L-class vessels to be delivered during the next year and a half. The Open Hatch Concept The open hatch/gantry crane design was developed in the early sixties to handle wood pulp and paper in the coastal trade on the North American west coast. The unobstructed, square cargo holds with no overhanging deck (also known as shoebox holds), dehumidification systems and the rail-mounted overhead gantry cranes secure accurate, quick and damage-free load and discharge. Star Shipping took an early interest in the design. Following negotiations with some of the major pulp producers, the companycontracted several larger open hatch gantry craned ships and pioneered the deep sea transport of pulp, lumber and plywood. To date, no other ocean carrier in the world has transported more wood pulp than Grieg Star has. The open hatch design is ideal for unitized cargoes of all kinds. However, Grieg Star’s contract cargoes have changed over time to include other commodities like fluff pulp, newsprint, and kraft linerboard, as well as increasing volumes of steel pipes, coils and projects cargoes. To meet the new challenges, many refinements to the original design have been made 5 such as rain protection, removable tween decks, and greatly increased crane capacity and speed. The removable tween decks developed by Grieg Star provide the ability to safely mix commodities in the same hold and retain the integrity of the stowage, as well as to avoid contamination. Each deck consists of four pontoons, and can be quickly positioned on retractable brackets. The option of installing the decks at different heights provides even more flexibility to stow complex cargoes. When idle they are stored on a tank top, well out of the way. Grieg Star and the Port of Mobile A Norwegian-owned shipping company, Grieg Star operates liner services all over the world, and specializes in forest products but also carries steel, wind 6 energy components, project cargo and all kinds of unitized cargoes. The company operates liner services in North America, with its primary focus areas in the U.S. and Canada. The company started in 1961 as Star Shipping. In 2008, Star Shipping became Grieg Star Shipping and joined the Grieg Group of companies. In 2010, the company began its largest new building program in its history. The Alabama State Port Authority and Grieg Star have had a very long and mutually beneficial relationship. Grieg Star began shipping through the Port of Mobile in 1979, and began regular service when Alabama River Mill in Perdue Hill, located west of Monroeville, started its operations. “Greig Star has been an important partner of the Alabama State Port Authority since the late 1970’s when ALABAMA SEAPORT • SUMMER 2013 The Christening Tradition Ship christening ceremonies are the modern version of a traditional blessing that dates back more than 3,000 years. Over the centuries christening ceremonies have changed significantly, ranging from sprinkling "holy" water to sacrificing animals in what were initially religious events. Today champagne is used to mark these special occasions. they began to carry Alabama–made wood pulp into the world markets,” said James K. Lyons, director and chief executive for the Alabama State Port Authority. ”Over the years we have seen the fleet expand and evolve with each generation employing more advanced technology to ensure that they continue to offer the highest quality service in a changing market. We’re very honored to have been chosen as the christening port for the STAR LINDESNES.” From the Port of Mobile, Grieg Star runs service to North Europe with two ships a month. It also operates one ship a month to the Mediterranean, one ship a month to the Far East, and one ship a month to South America. Grieg Star operates services from North Europe, Brazil, and the Far East to Mobile. “Mobile has a good strategic position for us,” said Hoyvik. “We carry a lot of forest products, and with all the mills in the area and southeast, Mobile has been a very good Port for us to load and ship cargoes to destinations around the world.” Hoyvik added, “Grieg Star has always had and still has great cooperation from the Port, and the various vendors we use. We have had a very long and good relationship with the Mobile shipping community that we look forward to continuing this for many years to come.” ALABAMA SEAPORT • SUMMER 2013 Having women serve as sponsors has its roots in ancient Greece. As journeys lengthened, sailors saw their ships as sources of security and nourishment, creating a motherly relationship between crews and their ships. Since the 19th century mariners believed that a sponsor's spirit passed into a ship as it was christened, so they decided to ask women to become sponsors to become the spirit of their nourishment. Green Locomotive A labama State Port Authority’s Terminal Railway has taken a significant step to reduce their carbon footprint. In the fall of 2010, they began the process of rebuilding their locomotives to make them more environmentally friendly with the industry-leading GenSet technology. Their efforts to help the environment started with a competitive bidding process for funding from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The steps taken after receiving the funding have proved the Terminal’s dedication to the Port Authority’s initiative of becoming more ‘green’ and will be a long-term demonstration of that commitment. In 2009, the Port Authority became a partner with the Southeastern Diesel Collaborative (SEDC), a voluntary, public-private partnership that states its goal is to “improve air quality and public health by reducing emissions from existing diesel engines.” The SEDC formed under the EPA’s National Clean Diesel Campaign (NCDC). By becoming partners of the SEDC, the Port Authority received updates about new EPA funding opportunities, specifically about grants offered through their Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA). Enacted in 2005, DERA was first funded in FY 2008 and EPA has since awarded more than 500 grants nationwide in an effort to reduce hundreds of thousands of tons of air pollution and encourage fuel efficiency. In 2010, Terminal Railway moved forward with a proposal for a DERA grant to fund the rebuilding of a cleaner, greener locomotive. 8 ALABAMA SEAPORT • SUMMER 2013 Building Excellence—Innovative Port Solutions Since 1954 Shaw has more than 50 years of ports and harbors experience. From facility design for the Choctaw Point and Pinto Island Terminals for the Alabama State Port Authority to one of the world’s largest equipment procurement projects for Pusan Newport Company in Busan, South Korea, Shaw is providing complete port solutions. We partner with our clients in all facets of port projects www.shawgrp.com 3600 SPRINGHILL BUSINESS PARK, SUITE 200 • MOBILE, AL 36608 USA • 251.344.1913 • FAX 251.342.3229 04M052010D including comprehensive environmental services. “In addition to our goal of reducing emissions and fuel consumption we needed this rebuilt locomotive to do the job of moving rail cars as well or better than the old unit before the rebuild,” said Mike Russell, general manager, Terminal Railway. “We feel our goal there has been met.” The Port Authority’s Terminal Railway chose the advanced GenSet configuration as its diesel emission reduction technology because it met their needs and the EPA’s requirements for funding. For a locomotive to be EPA certified it must have a 1,500 horsepower (HP) engine or less. This GenSet has two 700 HP V-8 engines, and the overall 1,400 HP engine can actually pull more than their other 1,500 HP locomotives, which increases Terminal Railway’s capabilities. The advanced technology also reduces diesel fuel emissions by detecting when only one engine is needed. It senses how much weight is in tow, the slope of the hill on which it is pulling, and it can power these two engines on or off as needed during a transport. The GenSet has a built-in GPS and an on-board computer monitoring system that is capable of detecting a fault in the locomotive and sending alerts to its home base – it can even diagnose the problem and, in some cases, correct it remotely. The GenSet configuration also uses its on-board computer to detect if ever a wheel is slipping; in which 10 case, it transfers power away from that wheel to the adjacent wheel to provide the power needed. Overall, the GenSet technology can achieve 35-60 percent savings in fuel costs. Less fuel used means reduced diesel emissions, not to mention a major cost benefit. Using GenSet technology also reduces maintenance costs because it allows longer intervals between servicing the high efficiency engines and overall advanced configuration. The monetary amount saved by the GenSet configuration was estimated to repay its value in approximately three years. Cliff Wright, manager of environmental management at the Port Authority, researched and wrote the proposal to transform one of their 1980s diesel-electric MP-15 locomotives into a GenSet Ultra Low Emitting Locomotive (ULEL) for the National Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program. With more than 36 pages of required criteria, the EPA wanted the recipient of this DERA grant to prove they knew exactly how they would implement EPA verified and certified diesel emission reduction technologies. They also had support from Congressman Jo Bonner (AL-1) and community professionals to validate the benefits of their proposal. ALABAMA SEAPORT • SUMMER 2013 “The Port’s ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and particulate matter in its railroad operations will contribute significantly to the overall air quality of our city and region,” said Dr. Bert Eichold, Health Officer of Mobile County. “We applaud their efforts to move toward green technologies and encourage the EPA to grant the Alabama State Port Authority’s grant application.” GenSet was painted green and returned to the Port of Mobile. In March 2011, the Port Authority’s proposal was ranked number one out of all the EPA Region 4 applicants, and the ASPA became the proud beneficiary of this 2011 DERA grant to repower one locomotive. “It was paramount to me that we knew what we had and exactly how to use it,” said Wright. One requirement of the grant was the Port had to request competitive bidding from potential contractors. When the repower construction requirements were announced, and bids were submitted, the Port Authority awarded the project to R. J. Corman Railpower. In July 2012, the Terminal Railway shipped their MP-15 locomotive off to St. Louis, Mo., and the transformation began. The Port Authority’s team would travel to St. Louis monthly as R.J. Corman stripped the locomotive down to its base. The company spent the next year constructing the ULEL GenSet to Terminal Railway’s specifications with regular inspections by Wright and other Terminal Railway repower project members. By February 2013, the ULEL ALABAMA SEAPORT • SUMMER 2013 Upon arrival, operational training began – each employee was required to undergo 16 hours of one-on-one training and pass a written test before they could participate in any task concerning this ULEL GenSet. As of May 2013, the ULEL GenSet was put into unlimited use on the ASPA’s tracks. After three years and countless amounts of research, strategizing, planning and implementation, the “City of Florence” or the “802” (as it’s known at Terminal Railway) was ready to roll. “Every time I see that green and white locomotive on the tracks, I know it was all worth it,” said Wright. “Plus, we’re breathing cleaner air.” Wright was back to the drawing board in no time; the Port was awarded another DERA grant to transform two more of their MP-15 locomotives into ULEL GenSets. Three down, five more to go. 11 OffshoreAlabama.com Attends Premier Oil and Gas Expo in Houston O ffshoreAlabama.com has made great strides in recognizing opportunities to promote Mobile as a regional oil and gas player. Mobile is recognized as a transportation hub for the region, linking it not only to domestic markets, but also in ALABAMA SEAPORT • SUMMER 2013 OffshoreAlabama.com was born in 2008 when the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce (MACC) recognized the oil and gas industry in Mobile was lacking something eminent, a voice. Mobile had all the resources to house major oil and gas leaders but not many knew it. “As a result, the Chamber formed a task force consisting of a dozen oil and gas executives within the area under the name OffshoreAlabama.com,” said Russell. Russell explained the goal was simple - to position Mobile as a leading offshore service hub in the region and the eastern Gulf of Mexico. As a partnership among 230 oil and gas producers and service providers in the Southwest today, OffshoreAlabama.com, through networking events, marketing initiatives, legislative advocacy and technical and educational programs, has made itself a real player in the offshore industry. 13 Alabama’s Automotive Industry: Growing and Going A labama’s automotive industry continues to expand with additional plant facilities and new models being built. Mercedes-Benz recently announced a new parts consolidation center in Vance. Honda recently began production on a new line of automobiles at its Talladega plant and debuted two new models at the New York International Auto Show this spring. Mercedes-Benz Expands Operations Site preparation for a new parts consolidation center for Mercedes-Benz at the Tuscaloosa County auto assembly plant has begun. The $70 million consolidation center will be 915,000 square feet and is expected to employ 500 people once construction is completed early next year. Mercedes-Benz M-Class SUV The new parts consolidation center jobs are in addition to about 1,400 jobs that Mercedes-Benz is looking to fill in the coming months and years. The plant now produces the M-Class and GL-Class SUVs. New workers are expected to be in place before production of the C-Class sedan begins next year. First Acura Built in Alabama The Honda plant in Talladega County will build the first Acura to ever be manufactured in the state of Alabama. In May, Honda started the production of the first customer-ready Acura MDX SUV for the Japanese automaker’s luxury brand. Honda Debuts in New York City Honda’s Alabama manufacturing team built two new models that debuted at the New York International Auto show in early April. The 2014 Acura MDX SUV, a new vehicle for Japanese automaker’s Talladega County plant, is the most technologically advanced vehicle that Honda Manufacturing of Alabama has ever produced. HMA currently has the annual capacity to produce more than 300,000 vehicles and V-6 engines, making it Honda’s largest light truck production source. The advanced electronics and top-of-the-line features of the MDX called for significant investment in the plant’s production line, quality assurance and vehicle testing operations. The plant has invested $400 million and added 350 jobs in the past two years, partly to prepare for the MDX addition. The 2014 Honda Odyssey was the second vehicle to debut in New York. As the Talladega plant’s “top dog,” the updated Odyssey accounts for a little more than half of the facility’s overall production. The minivan went through a full redesign in 2011 and by the end of 2012 sold nearly 126,000 vehicles. 14 The all-new 2014 Acura MDX debuted at the New York International Auto Show on March 27. HMA starts mass production of the new model soon in Lincoln. ALABAMA SEAPORT • SUMMER 2013 ALABAMA SEAPORT • OCTOBER 2012 15 Skilled craftsmen are vital to Mitternight where major components of petrochemical plants are manufactured. Made in Alabama – Mitternight, Inc. F ounded in 1927 as Mitternight Boiler Works, this globally renowned pressure vessel company started as a simple boiler repair shop located along the Alabama River in downtown Mobile. Over the past 86 years, Mitternight, Inc. has grown in its abilities, evolved in its skills and experienced internal and external changes that have shaped it to be one of the leading companies in their industry internationally. Mitternight's History Today, Mitternight is a recognized leader in the production of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) coded pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and petrochemical process equipment. As a leading international specialist in manufacturing secure, reliable ASME-code vessels of every size, material and finish, Mitternight is able to not only fulfill its customers’ requests, but also to enhance and modify its customers’ ideas through brainstorming strategies, an experienced management team, and a highly skilled and stable workforce. The company builds each new project from scratch and customizes the plans to its clients’ needs. As the petro-chemical and energy production industries grew, so did the demand for larger, more sophisticated equipment, vessels, and other fabricated metal products. 16 Founder Joe Mitternight, a former mayor of Mobile, and two additional partners laid the groundwork for future generations of Mitternight management and employees. The most important pieces of that foundation that endure to this day are the guiding principles of customer satisfaction and quality production. Mitternight aggressively sought to meet that demand by cultivating a highly skilled work force, increasing its design and engineering capabilities, and maintaining the facilities and equipment necessary to complete projects of enormous size and complexity. In the early 1960s, Mitternight constructed the facility from which the company currently operates in Satsuma, Ala. This ALABAMA SEAPORT • SUMMER 2013 new facility, with its expanded size and updated equipment, enabled the company to compete for and win large, elaborate and highly profitable projects that it had formerly been unable to win. In November 2010, Mitternight was acquired by Stonebrook Partners Transactions (SPT). SPT was chosen by the ESOP Board of Directors to lead the next generation of growth. In SPT’s first full year of management the company reached new heights with $18 million in revenue. By the end of 2012, Mitternight saw an increase in their annual Gross Profit Margin of more than 14 percent since 2010. The Company and Its Products The large financial growth Mitternight incurred stemmed from the positive changes made in the workforce, facility and operational procedures. Employees and customers could see significant changes in safety, housekeeping such as segregation of materials, and the facility. As part of Mitternight’s continuous improvement, the company made a major capital investment to upgrade the facility, which was very much appreciated by the company’s employees, customers and the local community. Employees had such strong confidence and trust in their new management and owners that in October 2011, they collectively became a non-union company. Having originally become part of the union in the 1940s, the move to de-unionize was a major achievement. Mitternight also has regularly scheduled safety meetings to make sure the entire company is on the same page when it comes to safety in the workplace. A few of the internal safety procedures that contribute to employees’ security in the workplace include regular hearing tests and eye examinations, and monitoring the air quality and noise levels in the workshop. CEO Todd Burkhalter and his management team meet frequently with Safety Plus, Mitternight’s third-party safety consultant, to discuss safety reports and proactive opportunities. Mitternight holds a number of certifications from international, industry and supplier organizations, including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Section VIII Div. 1-A U Stamp; the Chinese license for pressure vessels A2, which allows them to export pressure vessels to China; and a European certification known as Pressure Equipment Directive, or PED. Additionally, Mitternight is an approved supplier and has certifications with many of its major suppliers and customers, such as Dow and DuPont. Manufacturing products for Fortune 500 customers in the petro-chemical, energy and refining industries worldwide, Mitternight has developed a highly reputable name for fabricating unique and innovative solutions from the design phase to working products for highly complex vessels. The company has spent more than eight decades practicing the exact science of designing, engineering, and manufacturing ASME-code pressure vessels, as well as heat exchangers, jacketed reactors, distillation columns, scrubbers, autoclaves, nuclear waste disposal vessels and other fabricated metal products. They have completed projects for a broad range of industrial applications including, but not limited to petrochemical and refinery, pulp and paper, chemical manufacturing and processing, power plants and energy production. With approximately 80 employees, the company excels in manufacturing using unusual high-nickel alloys and duplex stainless steels as well as conventional stainless steel. Equipment is also fabricated in carbon steel, chrome moly steel and low temperature steel. Mitternight has fabricated and improved some of the most advanced vessels in the world. Among its most notable projects, Mitternight designed and fabricated a renewable energy device, known as a CST Vaporizer, for Badger and Dow used in the manufacturing process of Styrene. “We want to make sure we stay ahead of the curve in corporate safety procedures,” said Burkhalter. “Our employees safety is always on our minds. We were very proud to have zero recordable injuries in the workplace in 2012.” Since 2010, increasing quality control measures for the manufacturing process has decreased time and man-hours being used to correct flaws in welding or other project tasks and generated a more efficient process for projects to go from start to completion. As Mitternight abides by ASME’s approximately 550 codes and standards, the company strengthens the quality of the products provided to its customers and reinforces the quiet competence in which it takes pride. Mitternight is dedicated to the goal of producing vessels for customers on time, within budget and to their specifications. ALABAMA SEAPORT • SUMMER 2013 A large heat exchanger passes the guard house at ASPA to load on to a freighter traveling to the Middle East. Mitternight & The Port Having access to the deepwater shipping port in Mobile expands Mitternight’s customer and potential customer base, and allows them to be more diversified and global in their scope of work. The ability to ship out of the Port also gives Mitternight an advantage over their competition since it is usually more affordable and some of the vessels they bid on are too big to deliver via train or truck. “Landlocked companies in our industry don’t have the same capability we do to bid on projects internationally,” said Lance Covan, chairman of Mitternight, Inc. “Access to the Port of Mobile has helped us to grow globally.” The Port has helped boost Mitternight from a national competitor to a global competitor. They’ve been able to compete with European, Spanish and Asian companies on projects internationally. Mitternight submitted a bid for a project in Houston in 2011; out of three U.S. companies that bid, Mitternight was the last one standing because of their ability to ship. The Port is also capable of shipping and moving extremely heavy equipment, which adds to the list of advantages it provides Mitternight. In 2006, they shipped a 200,000-pound exchanger to Kuwait through the Port. Mitternight’s persistent, high-quality work was acknowledged in 2012, when they received the Manufacturing Success in Rural America award from the White House and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Nominated anonymously, Mitternight was the only company in Alabama selected for the award, and was among one manufacturer from each state recognized. With great pride, Mitternight accepted the award for its efforts in manufacturing as the company strives to be at the top of its industry and to consistently produce quality work for customers around the globe. This time to the tune of approximately $681.7 million for two additional Littoral Combat Ships (LCS). The U.S. Navy already contracted Austal to build 10, 103-meter Joint High Speed Vessels (JHSV) and eight, 127-meter Independence-variant LCS class ships. In December 2010, a 10-ship block buy award was made to an Austal-led team. This particular contract is for building the fifth and sixth ships, the LCS 14 and LCS 16. LCS ships are intended for littoral zone (near-shore) operations, but can be used in open-ocean actions as well. According to the official website of the Navy, these ships are used in defeating mines, quiet diesel submarines and fast surface crafts. “This confirms the Navy’s commitment to the LCS program and their confidence in Austal,” said Austal USA President Craig Perciavalle. “This award wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and dedication of our employees.” “Austal’s production of these revolutionary ships continues to expand and improve, simultaneously delivering better program outcomes for the Navy and improved financial results for the company’s shareholders,” said Austal Chief Executive Officer Andrew Bellamy. Potentially valued at more than $3.5 billion, this U.S. Navy program will provide Austal with labor opportunities and earnings for years to come. The workforce in Mobile, Ala., will have to increase by 4,000 workers to complete contract requirements. Austal, the prime contractor, is teamed with General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems for both the LCS and JHSV programs. General Dynamics is the LCS program’s ship system integrator, meaning it is responsible for designing, testing and integrating all of the ship’s electronic systems. This encompasses the combat system, networks and seaframe control. With Austal’s new waterfront location on Mobile Bay opening recently, there is much on the horizon for the full-service shipyard. The company continues to expand its services and repair capabilities, positioning it for growth in engineering business as well as test and trail capabilities. The STAR FLORIDA arrived at the Port of Mobile on April 15 after sailing straight from the port in Bremen, Germany. The STAR FLORIDA is an F-class vessel operated by Grieg Star Shipping, a Norwegian owned shipping company operating liner services all over the world and carrying cargoes ranging from forest products to steel, to wind energy components and project cargo. Grieg Star booked the project cargo shipment a couple of months prior to the discharge at the Port. CSA, Grieg Star’s contract stevedore, handled and supervised the long-shore movement and onto conveyance. CSA worked in conjunction with Barnhart Crane. According to CSA General Superintendent Miles Covington the project cargo shipment was comprised of five massive cylindrical columns. Three of the columns measured 160 feet long by 9.5 feet wide by 9 feet in diameter and weighed 42 metric tons. The other two columns spanned 138 feet long by 10.8 feet wide by 10.5 feet in diameter and weighed 52 metric tons. About 20 more pieces of project cargo were also part of this movement. “Grieg Star relies heavily on our stevedore to provide labor and equipment and supervision to discharge and load our vessels,” said Neil Turner with Grieg Star Shipping. “That relationship with our stevedore is important. We met frequently on this particular lift, and had good discussions for logistics so we were able to unload the cargo safely with no damage to the cargo or our people.” Three of the columns were moved directly to specialized trucks operated by Interstate Freight, and two of the columns were moved by Barnhart to a storage area off of Pier 2. The trucks transported the columns to Charleston, Tenn., to a new polysilicone plant being built. Turner added, ”We know movements like this can open up a whole new potential for project cargo which means more business for our companies and more business for the Port of Mobile. Our business is all about cargo.” 22 ALABAMA SEAPORT • SUMMER 2013 CURRENTS STX ARBORELLA Maiden Voyage On January 17, Bill Inge, ASPA, presented a maiden voyage plaque to Capt. H a n d y M u s i c F e s t i v a l istorically rich guitar strums stretch for miles. People H dance and hum along to different melodies. And live music plays loudly on the lawns of government buildings. These are all scenes that can be found at the W.C. Handy Music Festival. In its 32nd year, the festival still clings to its roots with three counties joining forces to bring people the music of “the Shoals.” Aretha Franklin, Percy Sledge, the Civil Wars and the Alabama Shakes have musical ties to this region. At the heart of it all is the W.C. Handy Music Festival, a celebration of music and heritage. With no specific genre or venue where the music will be played, the Festival features 10 days where music is everywhere, every moment of the day. “You cannot describe this festival, you have to experience it and immerse yourself in the festival to understand what it is,” said Melanie Orseske, previous public relations coordinator for the W.C. Handy Music Festival. ”It’s different things to different people and that is the joy of the festival. I smile when I talk about because I want everyone to experience it.” The festival is named after William Christopher Handy, who was born in 1873 in Florence, Ala., the current location of the festival’s headquarters. Known as the “Father of Blues,” Handy’s first musical influence was the choir at the Greater St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in Florence, which was pastored by his grandfather and father. It was in Florence where Handy was inspired to play his cornet for the first time. Handy’s grandmother was a big supporter of his music career, although his father had other plans for him as a boy – to get a college education. Helping fulfill his father’s wish for him, Handy graduated from college and worked as a school teacher. But he later quit to move to St. Louis to pursue a career in music. Handy experienced homelessness, hunger and extreme poverty in St. Louis after being forced to split up from one of his many bands. Despite many hardships, Handy stuck to his music. He traveled through the eastern part of the U.S. playing his cornet and writing blues music. Willie Ruff, a renowned jazz musician, started organizing the festival in 1982 with The Music Preservation Society (MPS) as tribute to his mentor, W.C. Handy. The MPS now coordinates and organizes the annual festival. “Our mission is to present, promote and preserve the musical heritage of northwest Alabama,” said Nancy Gonce, executive director of the MPS. Named a Top Ten Event in Alabama and Event of the Year in 2007 by the Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel, the festival has been instrumental in sharing the musical heritage of the Shoals area. Though most of the events are free to the public, the economic impact the festival has on the Shoals is significant for the three participating counties. According to Director of Florence Lauderdale Tourism Bureau Debbie Wilson, the festival brings in more than $1 million to $1.5 million each year. More than 300 events take place during the 10-day festival. From libraries to churches, concerts are being played anywhere people can gather to hear genres ranging from New Orleans Jazz to Rock-n-Roll to Folk and Alternative. Music can be heard throughout all three counties in restaurants, parks, book stores, churches, homes, marinas and the list goes on. Every sunset at Wilson Park there is a dance party during the W.C. Handy Music Festival. Dianne Debter and her partner are dancing to The Jets at the festival in 2010. 24 ALABAMA SEAPORT • SUMMER 2013 This year’s festival will be July 19-28 and will kick-off in downtown Florence with a commencement parade that fills the streets of downtown and marches into Wilson Park where the famous statue of W.C. According to Orseske, they will wear their W.C. Handy official festival t-shirts like badges everyday of the festival. An anticipated part of each festival is the design competition. Individuals enter their own interpretations of the festival through artwork. A winner is chosen and their design is displayed on all the promotional materials - t-shirts, programs, fliers and posters. The yards have alternately flourished and floundered according to economic cycles of boom or bust. And while many of the yards have carved out niche markets for themselves over the decades, there is a special subset of shipbuilding for which Mobile has, until recent years, been largely unsung: warships. The shipyard that has gained significant attention most recently is Austal Shipbuilding, currently under contract to build the Joint High Speed Vessel and the Independence-class Littoral Combat Ship, the Navy’s newest and most versatile warship. What many people may not realize is that the Mobile area has a rich tradition of building vessels for war. The famed submarine H.L. HUNLEY, the world’s first submarine to sink an enemy vessel, was built in Mobile a stone’s throw from the present location of the Alabama State Port Authority’s headquarters building on Water Street. Fabricated in the Park and Lyons machine shop at the corner of State and Water streets, the HUNLEY was the second submarine to be built in Mobile by the same consortium. The first was the AMERICAN DIVER, which sank during sea trials in Mobile Bay. Although a number of crewmen died while testing the HUNLEY, the submarine was successful in its attack against the steam sloop-ofwar USS HOUSATONIC on Feb. 17, 1864, off Charleston, S.C. The submarine was lost with all hands before it could return to its base. Car Co., Chickasaw Utilities Co., and Chickasaw Land Co. The idea was to create a “company town,” where ships could be built and launched. A cypress swamp was drained; dikes and pumps were installed; and an entire town, complete with housing, stores, a health clinic and a community center, was developed. With U.S. Steel’s Fairfield plant providing prefabricated steel, Chickasaw Shipbuilding began construction on a number of steel-and-concrete transport ships. Simultaneously, F.F. Ley and Co. in Mobile began construction of transport ships also made of concrete, a total of 24 of which had been authorized nationwide by the Emergency Fleet Corporation. Additionally, the Mobile Shipbuilding Company received contracts to build a number of merchant vessels for the Emergency Fleet Corporation. Unfortunately, none of the ships built by Chickasaw Shipbuilding or F.F. Ley were completed before the war’s end. Only the Mobile Shipbuilding Co. delivered a vessel before the war’s end: the composite-hulled freighter BALINO was delivered in October 1918. In the Feb. 19, 1919, edition of the Mobile Register, Chickasaw Shipbuilding President George Gordon Crawford reported eight steel vessels would be in the process of construction at one time once preliminary work was completed and actual construction had started. Crawford noted that 1,600 houses for workers had been completed, and that the workforce consisted of 5,000 workers. Fifty years later, the world found itself embroiled in a wideranging war, and the United States’ entry into the conflict on April 6, 1917, created an urgent need for additional ships, both transport vessels and warships. On April 16, the Emergency Fleet Corporation was established by the government to acquire and operate merchant vessels for the war effort. In August 1917, the Tennessee Coal and Iron Co., a division of U.S. Steel, answered the nation’s call. With $20 million in federal funding available, plus another $10 million in capital, Tennessee Coal and Iron purchased a large tract of land The USS CAPPS (DD-550), built by Gulf Shipbuilding Corp. and launched June 1, 1942, was the just north of the Port of Mobile first destroyer built on the eastern Gulf of Mexico. and established three companies: the Chickasaw Shipbuilding and 28 ALABAMA SEAPORT • SUMMER 2013 Chickasaw Shipbuilding began production of its first ship, the CHICKASAW CITY, on Dec. 1, 1919, for parent company U.S. Steel. Provisions were also made for the transport of liquid bulk cargo. The concrete ships SELMA and LATHAM were launched by F.F. Ley and Co. in 1919 and 1920, respectively, and were sold privately. The December issue of Port of Mobile News, which reported the launching of the FAIRPORT, had to be reprinted without its customary ship sailing schedule before it could be mailed to subscribers. Publication of the magazine’s sailing schedule was suspended for the duration of the war so as not to give away ship movements to the enemy. As much as the merchant vessels were needed for the war effort, true warships were in even greater demand. Gulf Shipbuilding had laid down the keels of four destroyers by the end of 1941, and the next month, U.S. Secretary of the Navy William Franklin “Frank” Knox awarded the Navy E Pennant to the company for “outstanding performance in filling Navy contracts.” The May 1942 issue of Port of Mobile News reported that Gulf Shipbuilding had had a busy month, launching both a merchant vessel and two minesweepers (the future USS TUMULT and USS VELOCITY) on April 19. June 1 marked another milestone for the shipbuilder when it launched its first destroyer, the future USS CAPPS, the first destroyer built on the eastern Gulf Coast. The ceremonies did not include the fanfare that had attended the launching of the FAIRPORT just seven months earlier, according to the June issue of Port of Mobile News. Instead, the “ceremonies were brief, in keeping with the spirit of a people at war, who have dispensed with formality and pomp in their great struggle against the Axis.” Ship’s sponsor was Mrs. Charles Gaines Stokes, whose husband served as general chairman of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen for the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Railroad. The Stokes had five sons serving as officers in the Navy at the time, and two of them were present for the launching. That same month, ADDSCO launched its sixth ship, the 10,000ton Liberty Ship THOMAS HEYWARD before a crowd of several thousand workers and their families. ADDSCO also laid the keel of its fifteenth ship and delivered its second ship that month. Gulf Shipbuilding launched its second destroyer, the future USS DAVID W. TAYLOR, on July 4, 1942. The ceremony was, if possible, even less formal than the one held for the CAPPS. Ship’s sponsor, Mrs. Imogene Taylor Powell, daughter of the ship’s namesake, Rear Adm. The U.S. Navy’s version was later described by naval historian Norman Friedman as “fast, roomy, capable of absorbing enormous punishment, and yet fighting on,” and at least one Navy officer would later credit the Fletcher-class of destroyers with winning the war at sea, calling them “the heart and soul of the small-ship Navy.” The Gulf-built destroyers established a creditable record. The USS CAPPS (DD-550), first of the destroyers to come off the ways at Gulf Shipbuilding, was commissioned on June 23, 1943, and placed under the command of Lt. Cmdr. Bruce E.S. Trippensee. The CAPPS participated in the first raid on German shipping in Norway in October 1943, screened two British battleships and two aircraft carriers transiting from Gibraltar to Scapa Flow, and served as a convoy escort in the North Sea before moving to the Pacific Theater, where she escorted convoys and conducted antisubmarine and antiaircraft patrols. She participated in the pre-invasion bombardment of Iwo Jima in February 1945, firing more than 2,600 5-inch shells at the enemy. The CAPPS went on to participate in the invasion of Okinawa, sailing in the screen of escort carriers, navigating mine-infested waters, rescuing downed airmen and turning in a stellar war-time performance. In all, the CAPPS earned seven battle stars for her service in World War II. The second Gulf destroyer, the USS DAVID W. TAYLOR (DD-551) was commissioned on Sept. 18, 1943, under the command of Lt. Cmdr. W.H. Johnsen. The TAYLOR spent the entirety of her career in the Pacific, providing escort work, screening various task forces. On July 4, 1944, while patrolling east of Saipan in the Marianas, the TAYLOR and the USS RIDDLE (DE-185) attacked and sank the Japanese Type A1 submarine, I-10. The destroyer screened the logistics group supporting fast carrier task forces until Nov. 22, 1944, when she was assigned to support the carriers for air attacks on Luzon. On Dec. 29, the TAYLOR steamed from Ulithi to participate in the air raids on the Bonins, but at 7:45 on the morning of Jan. 5, 1945, the TAYLOR struck an underwater mine, sustaining heavy damage and killing four men. Through outstanding leadership and expert damage control, the officers and men were able to save the ship and get her safely to Saipan on Jan. 7. The ship earned a total of eight battle stars during the war. The third destroyer off the ways in Chickasaw, the USS EVANS (DD-552), was commissioned on Dec. 11, 1943. Commanding officer was Cmdr. F.C. Camp. As her sister Gulf destroyers did, the EVANS saw action in the Pacific, screening larger warships and conducting antisubmarine patrols. The USS TOKEN (AM-126), USS TUMULT (AM-127) and USS VELOCITY (AM-128) all saw service in the Pacific Theater, earning a combined total of 14 battle stars for World War II service. The fourth minesweeper launched in Chickasaw, originally to be the USS VITAL (AM129), was transferred to the Royal Navy under the LendLease program and renamed HMS STRENUOUS (J338). At about this time in 1942, Gulf Shipbuilding acquired a second yard in Madisonville, La., where it began building its minesweepers. The majority of the minesweepers built by Gulf Shipbuilding were transferred to Allied navies, including the Royal Navy, the Chinese Navy and the Russian Navy. Several ships built by Gulf Shipbuilding saw service in the Korean War, while others served for decades in friendly navies. The USS VAN VALKENBUGH (DD-656), under the command of Cmdr. Alexander B. Coxe Jr., saw combat action off Iwo Jima and Okinawa and was credited with saving the LST-884, which had been struck by a kamikaze aircraft. The LST carried a cargo of munitions and a detachment of Marines. The destroyer earned a Navy Unit Commendation and three battle stars for service in World War II. of Okinawa on the night of May 10, 1945, the EVANS and three other vessels sustained near constant attacks by at least 100 enemy aircraft. The EVANS was credited with shooting down 14 Japanese planes, but the destroyer was struck by no fewer than four kamikazes. The damage was catastrophic, and the casualties were sobering: 32 men killed and 27 wounded. Her aft engineering spaces were flooded, and without power, the EVANS struggled for survival. Through the sheer determination of her men, the destroyer was saved. The crew’s efforts earned the ship the Presidential Unit Citation “for extraordinary heroism in action.” The warships built by Gulf Shipbuilding Corp. all served valiantly. The USS JOHN D. HENLEY (DD-553) served in the Pacific and earned six battle stars; the USS BEARRS (DD654) served in the North Pacific, earning one battle star; the USS JOHN HOOD (DD-655) spent the entirety of her career with Task Force 92 in the North Pacific and was the only ship in the task force to participate in every sortie from reporting for duty until the end of the war: she was credited with assisting in the sinking of one enemy cargo vessel and the probable sinking of a second. The USS VAN VALKENBURGH (DD-656) participated in both the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. During the latter, the ship’s crew rescued a number of victims of kamikaze attack and helped to save the LST-884, which carried munitions and an embarked detachment of U.S. Marines. A fire and rescue party led by Lt. Cmdr. W. Brown managed to extinguish the fires and save the ship. Brown and another officer received the Silver Star for their efforts, and 15 enlisted men were also decorated for saving the LST-884. The VAN VALKENBURGH also was credited with shooting down a number of enemy aircraft. She was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for her service off Okinawa, as well as three battle stars for her World War II service. ALABAMA SEAPORT • SUMMER 2013 At the peak of production, Gulf Shipbuilding Corp. employed some 15,000 personnel in Chickasaw. The shipyard built 37 cargo vessels, the last of which, the JOHN B. WATERMAN, was delivered in March 1946. It also built seven destroyers and one landing ship dock, which was delivered after the war’s end and eventually transferred to the Taiwanese Navy. The company built a total of 30 minesweepers, the majority of which wound up serving in other navies. It was a remarkable achievement of shipbuilding for such a short period. With the end of the war, however, the need for ships shrank dramatically, and, by 1946, the shipyard was closed. Early in 1946, the Leedy Investment Co. purchased the entire town of Chickasaw for $1 million. Current occupants were given the option to purchase the homes they were renting, which many did. The town of Chickasaw was incorporated on Nov. 12, 1946. No other warship was built in Mobile until the USS INDEPENDENCE (LCS-2), which was laid down on Jan. 19, 2006, and commissioned on Jan. 16, 2010, continuing a proud tradition of building warships in Alabama. The USS TOKEN (AM-126) was the first of many minesweepers constructed by Gulf Shipbuilding. The ship earned four battle stars for her service during World War II and was the second surface vessel to enter Tokyo Bay ahead of the USS MISSOURI (BB-63) for the signing of the surrender document by the Japanese. The TOKEN and the REVENGE (AM-110) swept the harbor for mines before the MISSOURI could proceed. 31 ARRIVALS/SAILINGS APM TERMINALS MOBILE SERVICE LINES HMM ATS MAERSK TransAtlantic TA2 Eastbound MAERSK TransAtlantic TA2 Westbound MSC Gulf Feeder Service APL ATS Eastbound APL ATS Westbound China Shipping AAE2 CMA CGM PEX 3 Service MSC South Atlantic ZIM LINES MXX Mexico Express For more details visit asdd.com/arrivalssailings.html Trade Lanes DESTINATION LINE FREQUENCY AGENT Nordana Nordana Oran Inducement Inducement Inducement Biehl & Company Biehl & Company ISS RioMar ARGENTINA PUERTO MADRYN CAMPANA Gearbulk Gearbulk Bi-Monthly Bi-Monthly Inchcape Inchcape ARUBA ORANJESTAD C.I.C.
