NEWSLETTER Fall 2015 “I saw a child who couldn't walk, sit on a horse, laugh and talk... I saw a child born into strife, Take up and hold the reins of life” -John Anthony Davies REINS Therapeutic Horsemanship Program, PO Box 1283, Bonsall, CA 92003 Non-Profit Corporation 501 c (3) 33-0035455 Message FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Over the last 20 years I have had the distinct pleasure and honor to be the Executive Director at REINS. During that time I have written on many topics including my incredible staff, my volunteers, my board of directors and all of our events that we have had the pleasure of hosting here. But I’ve never spoken about what makes all this happen, and that’s our horses. OUR MISSION Our mission is to provide physical and emotional therapy to a wide range of disabled children and adults through the use of carefully supervised horseback riding. The benefits of this therapy are both mental and physical and include normalization of muscle tone, increased balance and coordination, developments of speech and language, and improvements in body awareness and self-esteem. OUR VISION REINS will be a leading Therapeutic Riding Center in the United States for our high quality of therapy, continuing education and exploration of new therapy techniques. As many of you may or may not know without the horse, which is our tool, we could not do what we do here at REINS. The movement of the horse helps to strengthen the core of our students and helps to build their self-esteem. I would like to share with you how our REINS horses have given of themselves in our program. There have been extensive studies as to how stressful it is to be a therapeutic riding horse. We have students that do not have any core strength and are constantly moving all over the horse, sometimes tweaking the horses back or flailing their arms. Yet these animals know and are so instinctive that they submit and tolerate these outbursts because they can sense that the autistic child, paraplegic veteran, or cerebral palsy adult are in need of their help. We pride ourselves at REINS that we are able to provide a home for these older horses who are professors in their own right. They have given their talents in the show ring, on the racetrack, in parades, or on the trail. In my 20 years at REINS, I have had the pleasure to see over 75 horses carry our students to success. The improvements and events wouldn’t have been possible without the help of our amazing community members that help keep REINS thriving. In particular, we have been so fortunate to have the support of our local Eagle Scouts, who have completed countless projects for us over the years. We would like to highlight some of the recent projects because we have been so impressed. Many of you have probably noticed the striking new bench around the peppertree in front of the office. Mr. Luke Gillcrist and his troop #731 worked hard to bring our “Giving Tree” vision to life, as we hope to eventually highlight past and present donors around the tree. He even went as far as engraving the REINS emblem into the corners of the benches. If you haven’t checked out his extraordinary workmanship yet, please do! Debbie thanks Eagle Scout, Luke Gillcrist, for his hard work. Additionally, Gregory Weisz with troop 707 and John Gambrell from troop 789 have GREATLY improved our feed room by adding feed storage bins, large cabinets, and a sturdy countertop. The room is now clean, organized, and manageable so that our horses are sure to receive the best care possible! We have had multiple other projects taking place around the property just this year such as the area around the bridge and entrance, sensory stations on trail, shelving units for volunteers, and more! We are so thankful for the amount of hard work and dedication that these young men have put into their projects. We’ve said it so many times, but REINS is only prospering like it is, because of the support of our community. So THANK YOU Eagle Scouts for adding to our success! -Maggie Schuur, Volunteer Coordinator Thank you to our 2015 Student Sponsors Fallbrook Vintage Car Club San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary Welcome New Students “If you climb into the saddle, be ready for the ride!” Austin Bright Matthan Camacho Colleen Keaveny Elyse Holsinger Cynthia Hall Miles Brothers Phyllis Nikula New Student Alexis Grant is all smiles during her lesson. This year’s hoedown was proudly sponsored for the fourth year in a row by The Donegan-Burns Foundation. Highlights from the evening included two riding demonstrations and videos on the giant Jumbotron. Doug Miller impressed attendees with his riding exhibition set to Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire”. Maria Marler, 5, and Isabella Villafana, 4, rode with My Little Pony pride in a Pas de Deux of “Friendship Forever”. More than $70,000 Raised to Support Our Program Services Just before the dinner bell rang all the students and children at the Hoedown marched onto the main stage to “Raise the Barn”. Young and old came together to dance with blow-up banjos, hammers and bandanas to rally attendees and raise money for the new barn. This year’s hoedown was the unveiling of the new barn structure to the general public. Clay Colton was the emcee for the evening and provided live music entertainment for all to enjoy. Guests also enjoyed a bbq dinner buffet catered by Famous Dave’s. The silent auction overflowed with amazing baskets, art, memorabilia and vacations that brought in over $20,000 in proceeds for the evening. The event was a smashing success and we would like to thank all of our sponsors and donors. For more info www.reinsprogram.org Raise the Barn After a hard day’s work out on the dusty ranch, the REINS horses get all tucked into their new comfy dry stalls for the night. Like us when we leave work, and put our feet up on the couch to relax for the night, our horses now have the comfort of a new barn structure to shelter them from the blaring sun of the summer, and the chilly rain of the winter. Las Patronas graciously funded the first $20,000 dollars to kick off our “Raise the Barn” Campaign to cover the $75,000 total cost of this project. REINS is still working to cover this new and MUCH improved addition to the property, so buy a “My Little Pony” from us to pitch in! Several of our supporters including: Betz Concrete Inc., A&R Excavating, Grangetto’s, K&M Contracting Inc., M H Enterprises, Modern Builders, and Perrault Family Corporation, assisted REINS in completing the new stall structures in just over a month!!! They worked tirelessly on this project to make sure they had it completed in our tight timeline. Our wonderful horses got to spend their fun and carefree summer break turned out in various pastures on the property where they had no stress or worries all summer long! Without the amazing support of our community, our REINS facility would not be where it is today. We appreciate all that each and every person in our REINS family donates to keep this ranch going. Our fantastic horses give so much of themselves to our special riders, they truly deserve the best that we have to offer them. Thank you from the bottom of our little pointed hearts for all that you have done to help us build this dream facility, that we call home! -Kaitlyn Siewert, Program Manager REINS Board Vice President, Jim Betz, hard at work to “Raise the Barn”!
