August/September Newsletter 2014
Blue Notes Bi-Monthly Newsletter from the CROSSROADS OF RUSTBELT BLUES P.O. Box 470204, Broadview Heights, OH 44147 www.clevelandblues.org June / July • 2014 • Issue 3 The 2014 CBS OFFICERS AND Board members President • Rosalie Daley [email protected] Vice President • Teri Pealer [email protected] Secretary • Elaine DeStephano [email protected] Treasurer • Bob DeVries [email protected] Board Member • Bill Koteles [email protected] Board Member • Mike Kormos [email protected] Board Member • John Pawlicki [email protected] Board Member • Ken Porter [email protected] Board Member • Frances Whitney [email protected] Mission Statement The Cleveland Blues Society is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote awareness and appreciation for the blues. Through our alliance, we endeavor to provide more opportunities for fans to see quality local and national blues artists. Additionally, we will provide educational workshops and preserve the history of the blues in our area. Featured Article So, it’s summertime! As I am writing this, we are launching the summer with Hessler Street fair, with many of our members either playing or strolling. Welcome Summer! Our Meeting at Grillers was attended by many despite the summer storms. Thanks go out to Grillers, Wayne Bell and the Superstars, and the CBS Board for steppin’ up while Ken and I were unable to attend! Thank you all for supporting! This completes our 5th Jam of the year. We are very excited to be able to continue working to reach out to all of our fans and bring the blues to you. The newsletter is really helping to reach out to all of our members and friends. We have been receiving numerous requests from touring bands, for places to play! We want to encourage our local clubs to keep booking bands both local and regional to bring the blues to you. We would also like to hear from our membership about how best to keep the blues alive in our area. Many talk about festivals and national acts; what events and programs do you like or would you like? As we grow, we want to plan for both of these types of events. However, we need to know which kind of events will be supported. These events require financial support from both a sponsorship and ticket revenue standpoint. Please remember the artists need more than applause to keep playing for us. Buy their CD’s; patronize the venues they play at! That being said, we know that every event we plan or support gives an opportunity for all of us to participate and enjoy! We are blessed in Cleveland and our surrounding areas to have many high quality musical venues. It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to the Winchester Music Hall. Although Jim and Rebecca are choosing to spend their energy in other pursuits, we in the music community, owe them a huge thank you for the time and energy they spent supporting live music and artists here in Cleveland. As the doors close at the Winchester, the doors are opening at the casino’s, Jilly’s in Akron, Euclid City Limits and many others. Area clubs such as the Parkview, Wilbert’s, The Savannah, Griller’s, The Canal House, The House of Swing, Cebar’s, the Blue Rock Café, Main Street Medina, Stampers, Fairview Tavern, the Beachland Ballroom, and so many others which I haven’t had the pleasure of visiting yet; all continue to bring live music to our area. ... continued on page 2 Cleveland Blues Society • Blue Notes • June / July 2014 • Issue 3 Page 1 Featured Article ...continued from page 1 Please continue to support them so they can, in turn, continue to support live and local music. The outdoor music season is upon us. Tickets are on sale for Cain Park, Lock 3, along with many festivals throughout the area. CBS will be participating in many events this year. We started the season off at the Louie Run, and will be participating in this season’s Medina Main Street Café’s RALLY in the Alley June 20, with Colin Dussault and August 1st with Charlie Christopherson. CBS will be the Non-profit organization volunteering and receiving a cash donation. The Rally is a great fundraiser for us which helps offset the costs of putting on the Memphis Challenge. It is a great night of music, and a nice ride! CBS is also supporting the Larchmere PORCHFEST June 21st. Thank you John Woodson and Gary Martin for spearheading this and helping to get us involved. CBS members Steev Inglish, Blues Chronicles’ Reese Black and Al Moses, along with Dan “Mudfoot” Hubbs and the Blues Messengers will be performing at Woodson’s Blues Party. Down the street, The Vernon Jones’ Blues Cartel sponsored by The Cleveland Blues Society will be performing. Stop out and enjoy the day. www.larchmereporchfest.org Congratulations to Jarred Goldweber, one of the youngest members of CBS, who recently celebrated his 18th birthday and graduated from Benedictine High school. He received a 2014 Generation Blues Scholarship to the Harmonica Collective Spring Gathering from the Blues Foundation. Good luck in your endeavors. Our 2nd Annual Blues Cruise on July 14th promises to be a stellar evening, while the Cruise sails, land lovers can attend our July Jam at The Sunset Grille on Whiskey Island with The Elm Street Blues Band. We thank all of the artists who will be entertaining us and are grateful for your support for the cruise and our jams. The cruise is not only a wonderful evening, but is also helping us build a solid foundation on which to develop educational programs and events. In addition to the RALLY in the Alley, August will again see us at the Cuyahoga County Fair from the 4th-10th, with an expanded program of entertainment. This year CBS will provide a day of Blues programming in the Old Barn Pavilion. We will be offering educational spots and historical presentations along with the music. Also in August Jeff Hurd and the Nightwalkers will be our hosts at the Red Hawk Grille for the CBS jam on the 11th. This issue of our Blue Notes introduces our guest writer spot. We invite those interested in writing a review of their musical experiences for the “Share Your Blues Story ” column. We know many of you travel to different events and follow different bands. Please share your experiences with us. Thanks to Martha Gunn Andrus for kickin’ this off. I hear there are many others with ideas and stories to share. When you see our “Volunteer Spotlight” photographers, Deb Eberly, Lloyd Braun, and Martha Gunn Andrus, please thank them; let them know how much you enjoy their pictures and videos. They are capturing moments in time that can never be repeated! Thank you so much for your generous gifts. Enjoy! With this issue, we announce the “Call for Bands” for the 2014 Cleveland Blues Society IBC Memphis Challenge. The Date is October 12. All Ohio area blues bands are encouraged to apply as a band, solo/duo or Best Self Produced CD category. Youth bands are also encouraged to submit an application. As we continue to grow and evolve, we on the CBS board wish to keep the membership at the forefront of activities. In the effort to make sure everyone has the chance to share in the experiences, we are planning an annual membership meeting in September. The date and location to be announced at a later date. CBS is a membership based volunteer organization. The board encourages members to volunteer how and when they can, and to continue to share opportunities and their ideas for ways CBS can execute its mission. Thank you to my fellow board members, CBS volunteers and you for your support in keeping Live and Local Blues alive in Cleveland. – Ro Daley ccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc Cleveland Blues Society • Blue Notes • June / July 2014 • Issue 3 Page 2 UPCOMING EVENTS IN THE AREA JUNE JULY ...continued 6/06 The Mavericks at the Kent Stage 6/07 R&B-Gospel-Soul-Blues Sensation with Crazy Marvin, The Hesitations, & Rare JuELLE at Wilbert’s Food & Music 6/07 Kelly Richey at the Beachland Ballroom, Cleveland 6/08 Cincy Blues Challenge Band, Germaninia Park, Cincinnati 6/09 Cleveland Blues Society Monthly Jam at the Beachland Tavern with the Patrick McLaughlin Band 6/11 Carolyn Wonderland at The Canal House, Tuscarawas 6/12 Bill Kirtchen & Too Much Fun at the Beachland Ballroom, Cleveland 6/13 Johnny Winter at the Beachland Ballroom 6/14 Carolina Chocolate Drops at Cain Park Evans Amphitheater 6/13 – 6/15 Chicago Blues Festival FREE IS GOOD 6/19 Widespread Panic at Jacobs Nautica Pavilion 6/20 Colin Dussault at Main Street Cafe’s Rally in the Alley with Cleveland Blues Society the Non profit Beneficiary. 6/20 – 6/22 Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival Gahanna, Ohio w/ Ray Fuller & The Blues Rockers, John Hammond, Sean Carney, others TBA 6/20 – 6/21 Canton Blues Festival – “Women in Blues” w/ Ana Popovic- Friday, Shemekia Copeland, Saturday FREE IS GOOD 6/21 Vernon Jones Blues Cartel at Larchmere PORCHFEST Sponsored by Cleveland Blues Society 6/21 Blues Chronicles and Dan “MUDFOOT” Hubbs and the Blues Messengers at Larchmere PORCHFEST sponsored by Woodson’s Blues Party 6/24 Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robert Randolph & Family Band at the Kent Stage 6/24 Poppa Chubby at Wilbert’s Food & Music, Cleveland 6/25 Nikki Hill at the Beachland Tavern, Cleveland 6/26 Big Bad Voodoo Daddy at Hard Rock Rocksino, Northfield Park 6/27 Trombone Shorty & John Scofield at The Palace Theatre, Cleveland 6/27 Chris O’Leary Band at Rhythm on the River, Riverside Amphitheatre, Pomeroy 6/28 Schwartz Brothers at the Beachland Tavern, Cleveland 6/28 Sean Carney’s Blues For A Cure at Sally Buffalo Park, Cadiz, Ohio FREE IS GOOD 7/11 Brigitte DeMeyer at Rhythm on the River, Riverside Amphitheatre, Pomeroy 7/14 Cleveland Blues Society 2nd Annual Blues Cruise on the Goodtime III 7/14 Cleveland Blues Society Monthly Jam at Whiskey Island’s Sunset Grille with The ELM STREET BLUES BAND 7/16 Trampled Under Foot at The Canal House, Tuscarawas 7/18 Big Al & the Heavyweights at Rhythm on the River, Riverside Amphitheatre, Pomeroy 7/18 Kent Blues Festival blues bands FREE all over town FREE IS GOOD 7/19 Kent Blues Festival 7/19 John Hammond & Rory Block at The Kent Stage 7/20 Michelob Blues Festival, Dayton 7/23 The Sean Chambers Band at The Canal House, Tuscarawas 7/25-7/26 Big Bend Bllues Bash, Pomeroy 7/26 Boz Scaggs at The Palace Theatre, Cleveland 7/26 War & Reluctantly Jammin Blues Band at Lock 3 in Akron 7/27 Dayton Blues Challenge, Gilly’s, Dayton 7/29 Tas Cru & his Tortured Souls at Wilbet’ts Food & Music, Cleveland (Blues Foundation 2013 KBA Winner!) 7/30 Wallace Coleman at Lock 4 in Akron 7/31 Rip Lee Pryor at Wilbert’s Food & Music, Cleveland JULY 7/02 George Thorogood & The Destroyers at Hard Rock Rocksino, Northfield Park 7/02 Albert Castiglia at The Canal House, Tuscarawas 7/04 Todd Wolfe band at Rhythm on the River, Riverside Amphitheatre, Pomeroy AUGUST 8/01 Charlie Christopherson at Main Street Cafe’s Rally in the Alley with Cleveland Blues Society the Non profit Beneficiary 8/01-8/02 Cincy Bluesfest 8/01-8/02 Canal Winchester Blues & Rib Fest, Canal Winchester 8/02 Johnny Rawls at Rhythm on the River, Riverside Amphitheatre, Pomeroy 8/03 Eric Johnson at the Kent Stage 8/04 – 8/10 CBS will be at the Cuyahoga County Fair – stop in and see us! 8/08-8/10 Heritage Blues Festival at Heritage Port, Wheeling, WV 8/11 Cleveland Blues Society Monthly Jam at the Redhawk Grille, Concord with The Nightwalkers 8/16 Taj Mahal at the Kent Stage 8/16 Buddy Guy at Hard Rock Rocksino, Northfield Park 8/23 Project Blues, LifeCare Alliance Center, Columbus projectblues.org SUPPORT LIVE AND LOCAL MUSIC IN OUR AREA! Cleveland Blues Society • Blue Notes • June / July 2014 • Issue 3 Page 3 CBS VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT by Teri Pealer Blues Lovin’, Shutter Buggin’ Trio Lloyd Braun, Debra Eberly, & Martha Gunn Andrus I chose this talented trio because they have shown their dedication and love for the blues time and time again by volunteering at numerous CBS events snapping literally thousands of photos. 1) How long have you been involved with CBS? What brought you to it? Lloyd: 3+ years. It was an easy decision. While already active in photographing and shooting videos at many different clubs and meeting members of CBS, I decided to become involved with the organization. Deb: Since 2009, 1st Blues Challenge. Ro Found me at Cebar’s (Alan’s Sunday Blues Jam) and recruited me! Martha: I’ve been involved with CBS for the last 4 years, and I am card carrying member #227. My friend Ro Daley introduced me to the Society when she saw how blue I was after some life-changing events. Well now… this was something I could relate to, and a creative outlet for my love of photography! 2) What do you like best about being involved with CBS? Lloyd: The active role in helping to promote live music and various venues in support of Blues and other types of music! Deb: Best music & musicians in town! Best people I have ever met follow the Blues! Life long friendships formed! My hobby is taking pictures and the CBS provides me with the best of the best! Martha: The music, most of all, but also the people. I love working with a team of Blues-minded people and helping to promote the Blues in our area. It warms my heart to watch an idea flourish into an event through the hard work and dedication of the CBS Board and volunteers. What a great group of people to work with. 3) Blues influences? Lloyd: Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker, Mckinley Morganfield, Chester Burnett, Johnny Winter, Albert King, Albert Collins, Big Bill Broonzy, Jimi Hendrix, Willie Dixon, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughan, the list continues. Deb: Sean Carney! (LOL) Muddy, Buddy, Stevie, Eric, BB, Robert Lockwood Jr.,…met Stress & Ray DeForest in ’86 & I was hooked! When I found out Alan had a Blues jam ever Sunday, right at the end of my street, you couldn’t keep me away! Been there taking pics for about 12 or 13 years. Kim Hess talked me into starting the Alan Greene Band face book page in 2009, with Alan’s blessing, …”As long as you spell my name right!” As of now, 943 people to entertain with my pics and videos! ;) ... continued on page 5 Cleveland Blues Society • Blue Notes • June / July 2014 • Issue 3 Page 4 CBS VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT ...continued from page 4 Martha: I was raised on Rock and Roll by my brother and drummer, Wally Gunn, at a young age, but now I realize how much of that music is influenced by the Blues. My earliest introduction to the Blues-influenced rock artists were Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Eric Clapton and the Allman Brothers. I am just now starting to enjoy some of the earlier Blues artists and have had the privilege to see B.B. King and Buddy Guy live in concert. The Tedeschi Trucks Band, Tab Benoit, and Tommy Castro have been added to my list of favs, as well as the talented local Blues artists, The Alan Greene Band, Armstrong Bearcats, Austin Walkin’ Cane, “Neon” Don Buchanan, Michael Bay, Mary Bridget Davies, Becky Boyd, Tracy Marie, and many, many more. I would take up this whole page if I listed them all. 4) Favorite Blues quote? Lloyd: A) “See you in the next world, don’t be late.” Jimi Hendrix B) “Be careful with a fool.” Johnny Winter Deb: I don’t know if it’s a quote but, Jim & Tammy got me a t-shirt that reads “Blues Me or Lose Me”! Martha: “…there’s not one blue note among all these black and white keys. The real Blues, the soul of the sound, comes from the spaces in-between.” –David Mutti Clark. Something else you should know about these three – Lloyd has dedicated countless hours of his time recording an unprecedented amount of video. Martha also volunteers and contributes her Graphic designs for CBS logos, Memphis Challenge t-shirts, programs, as well as the CBS Blue Notes Newsletter set-up and most CBS events. Debbie handles our printing needs for CBS events and her employer Keener Printing is also a big CBS supporter. Any of you local bands, musicians out there looking for PR shots, look these talented shooters up. Lloyd, Deb and Martha are responsible for preserving and documenting Cleveland Blues history in the making and have taken it upon themselves to continue to do so whether called upon or not. Many stellar Kodak music moments have been captured by these shut ter bugs. They have done their part to keep the Blues alive in Cleveland and The Cleveland Blues Society thanks them for their support and next time you see them out at a jam – you should thank them too, and oh, don’t forget to say “cheese!” TRIBUTE MUST BE PAID ***YOUR AD HERE*** for advertising info email [email protected] Cleveland Blues Society • Blue Notes • June / July 2014 • Issue 3 Page 5 blues Membership news Is your CBS membership current? Financials Bob DeVries and John Pawlicki 6th al International Blues Challenge Annu 6th al International Blues Challenge Annu One of the biggest and most important events we put on each year is our Cleveland Blues Challenge. Bands and Solo/Duo’s compete to represent CBS in Memphis for the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee. Even though we have many volunteers, by the time we rent the hall, hire security, obtain a liquor license, buy insurance, bring in food and drinks, get a back line and sound equipment, bring in and put up out-of town judges, print tickets and flyers and advertise we spend over $4,500. This does not include the $1700 in prize money we give to the winners to partially support their costs in Memphis. We use our general revenue from your membership dues along with ticket sales at the door (last year ~ $1500), food and drink sales (~$1500), new memberships and merchandise sales (~$1000) and member donations ($500) to break even. The two fund raisers following the challenge and our 50/50 raffles help raise the prize money. Last year was a very good year for the challenge; however we don’t always break even and that is where your $20 annual membership dues and support help provide a buffer for the bad years and front money for example to rent the hall. The membership dues also allow us to invest in and advertise other activities such as the jams, web site, mailings, county fair, and the blues cruise. Board members are not paid and volunteer their time and travel to plan and manage these activities. Your support is vital to the success of the Cleveland Blues Society. Getting Around by Martha Gunn Andrus Sometimes people say to me “Wow, you sure do get around!” and I have to laugh because while it’s true, it’s not in the way you may think. My favorite destinations are anywhere live music is playing, especially the Blues. Sure I have my favorite spots and favorite bands and jams, but unlike others that only follow one or two bands, or hang out at the same establishment time and time again, I like to check out, listen and take pictures at all of them. Ultimately, this leads to a lot of time on the road, so what better way to use the time than to listen to recorded music in my car. I love to slip in a new CD from a local artist and play it over and over again to really take it in. I love to get into the mind of the artist, hear their voice and every instrument and savor how each track is composed. Most recently, I’ve been listening to Austin Walkin’ Cane’s newest CD “One Heart Walkin’ ”, and what a joy to my ears and imagination it has been. Each track is unique, with a different sound and vibe, which conjures up images of other places and times. Rarely do I like every song on a CD, but this one is different. I truly like them all, but one of my favorites is track 3, “One Heart Walkin’ ”, and this is the reason: I was driving one evening and approaching a red traffic light in a rougher part of town. There was an elderly gentleman walking next to me on the sidewalk and as I slowed for the light, track 3 was playing in my car. To me, it looked as though he was walking to the beat of the song. It was rather cool that evening but I rolled down my passenger window, and cranked up the volume. As the music poured out of my window the man’s steady gait suddenly had a little swagger and hop in it. He turned his head to look at me and we shared a huge smile. As he proceeded to turn the corner, I thought to myself “there’s one heart walkin’ away.” It was a very touching and poignant moment for me, and I hope it was for him as well, that two strangers from two different walks of life would share a musical Blues moment. If you haven’t heard this CD yet, I highly recommend it. It’s sure to put a smile on your face and a hop in your step or at the very least, it will make your drive to the next live music venue much more enjoyable! www.walkincane.com Cleveland Blues Society • Blue Notes • June / July 2014 • Issue 3 Page 8 Call for Bands Calling all Ohio area Blues Bands and Artists to apply for the Cleveland Blues Society’s 6th Annual IBC Memphis Challenge Deadlline for entry is September 12, 2014 Cash prizes for Band, and Solo Duo winners, along with representing CBS in Memphis at the IBC Memphis Challenge January 20-24, 2015. Last year was a great success thanks to the many musicians supporting CBS and Cleveland music by performing in our booth area. The theme again this year will be to make more people aware of local musicians, their music and history. We have a number of returning musicians and would like to see some new faces. We are primarily looking for solo/duo musicians or a representative from your band to perform. Last year we were able to accommodate a full band and had as many as 8 musicians performing. Needless to say it was FUN!! The Cleveland Blues Society is presenting this opportunity for you to showcase your music to a potential audience of more than 200,000 people throughout the week. In return, we are asking for musicians, music vendors, etc. to volunteer some time in our booth to play, discuss your band and music style. Please bring any promotional materials, CD’s or merchandise when you arrive or earlier in the week. CBS also will sell and promote merchandise you leave with us. Our booth is at the same location on the corner of East and North Midway. The majority of traffic flow passes by our building when entering and leaving the fair.
