Welcome!
Fernandes & Sons Brings Great People
and a Wide Range of Experience to Layton
In May, Layton announced the acquisition of the assets of Fernandes & Sons General Contractors
of Campbell, California. The new company now operates under the name Layton Fernandes. We
asked our new California employees to tell us something about themselves. Those who responded
are featured on the following pages.
Celebrity Encounter
I met the baseball player Benito Santiago,
the catcher from the San Francisco Giants, in
McDonald’s.

Riding, Camping in Style
I have quite a few hobbies, but I guess my favorite
would be “glamping” and wakeboarding. My
husband and I have a 35’ 5th
wheel with (3) slides, which
makes the trailer the size of a
tiny apartment. Of course, this
doesn’t really qualify as camping. Hence the term
“glamping”. I also love wakeboarding! I am
turning 56 this summer and being able to get up
and “shred the lake” is quite the accomplishment.

A Different Kind of Construction
I enjoy building theatre sets for local theatre groups. Most recently, I designed and created sets for
Cinderella – next stop Peter Pan. We had fun with this show. My wife did costumes, and that’s my
daughter Sarah as Cinderella.
Pearse Brennan
Superintendent
Born to Travel
Among art, reading and hiking, I love
traveling most of all and getting to
experience different cultures first-hand.

Both Sides of the Nickle(s)
I met my husband Randy on the job 29 years ago and worked
with him most of those years, but I just left him. Hey, it’s not what
you think! After 40 years of working and the past 18 years with
Fernandes & Sons, now Layton Fernandes, I retired on July 17th.
Since I’m “the older woman,” Randy will continue with Layton
Fernandes as project manager for a few more years until it’s
time for him to retire. I retired on my mom’s 95th birthday. We
had a big party for her and then went on our annual two-week
vacation to Lake Tahoe. So I’ve been busy! I’m fortunate since
mom is still healthy (doesn’t even need glasses!), drives and is
totally independent. I look forward to spending more time with
her. I’ll also be spending more time with our dog, Truckee.
We’ve been having WNBBQ at our house for 19+ years now.
That’s Wednesday Night Bar B Que, EVERY Wednesday for
over 19 years. With vacations and holidays we have at least
45 WNBBQ’s a year. We average about 15 guests a week. It’s
been a great tradition; we eat well on Wednesday nights!
Lynn Nickles
Project Accountant
I have been referred to for years as Golfhon ever since my wife
got me a personal license plate “GOLFHON” and it’s on my
company vehicle! Yes, I do like to play golf.

Project Manager

Singing in a Saloon
I’m a native Californian who for a brief time
lived in Texas. During
one of my exploratory
adventures in Fort Worth
one Sunday afternoon, I
was pulled up on stage in
a small saloon by a cowboy in a 10-gallon
white hat to help him sing Wasted Away
Again in Margaritaville. I didn’t know much of
the lyrics, but it was good fun! Parrot Head?

Married to the Tool Man
My family is my world and consists of Tim the
Tool Man Allen (he’s really
a CPA), daughters Meagan
and Addison, and of course
my mom and dad. I was
born and raised here in
San Jose in my favorite hospital to work in –
Good Samaritan (SHHH don’t tell anyone).
Kimberly Allen
Project Manager
Mountain Man
I joined the Layton Fernandes team from the Layton
side. In my spare time I like to be outdoors either hiking,
fishing, mountain bike riding and hanging out with my
family. My wife, Rebecca, and I have two children, James
who is six and Amelia who is 1 ½ . The picture of my
son and myself is from a hike to the top of Moro Rock in
the Sequoia National Forest. My son will tell you it was a
great day because he beat me to the top.

“Semi” Retirement Beckons Larry and Teri Fernandes
My wife and I have enjoyed the proprietorship of Fernandes & Sons General Contractors which we created
more than four decades ago. Together with very dedicated employees we have enjoyed an excellent
reputation in the medical construction field. I am proud to pass our company on to a like-minded,
excellent company such as Layton Construction.
I’m not sure we’ll ever fully retire as our plate is full, but we are enjoying more discretionary time and
quality time with each other. As an airline transport pilot and helicopter flight instructor, my passion for
aviation has helped in business and pleasure. I see pursuing that even more in SEMI retirement.
Teri enjoys photography, sewing and art and is looking forward to pursuing those interests. She has wanted
to remodel our home which I have resisted – we should have time for that as well. Top on our lists is
spending more time with family, traveling with friends, motorcycle riding, bicycles, hiking . . . the list goes
on.
I’m positive Layton Fernandes will be taken to new heights under the watchful eye of Layton and continue
to be very successful in the San Francisco Bay Area. It’s been a pleasure….”

COVER STORY: Q&A
New Employees Bring Hearts to Work for Clients, Community
What has impressed you about the San Jose Team?
What has impressed you about the San Jose Team?
At Layton Fernandes, our employees make an impact on
their community – the largest, fastest growing community
in the United States. They realize, for a nurse or doctor
with 10-20 years’ experience, delivering healthcare is
routine. But for a patient that experience is anything
but. They feel a great sense of pride knowing their
contributions will
make a difference
to the people they
serve. The employees
here realize that most
peoples’ lives begin
and end in hospitals.
The doors are open
24 hours a day, seven
days a week. It takes
true dedication and
commitment to doing
whatever it takes, to get the job done, that’s the definition
of our team here in San Jose.
I am impressed by the client-oriented culture that has
existed within the Fernandes organization for years.
It aligns very well with Layton’s culture of creating
lasting relationships
and understanding and
exceeding customer
expectations. The owners
and facilities they have
serviced over the years
consider them an extension
of their staff and have
a high level of trust in
them. Most of their work
is negotiated without going
through a competitive bid
process. They have earned that trust and it has been a
hallmark of their success.
What are you looking forward to down the road?
In business, growth doesn’t just happen – it must be
planned and cultivated in order to achieve a successful
result. Therefore, I am most excited about growing a
strong, steady, stable business, while serving the needs
and challenges of a community we call home. The Bay
Area represents one of the two most highly educated
workforces in the nation, with a high percentage of
residents with graduate and professional degrees. We
are interested in growing our presence with talent but
we are mainly interested in growing our footprint here in
San Jose with a team of folks who give their hearts and
minds to the industry. I’ve started to share a motto here
recently, “Bring your heart to work.” We can educate and
mentor but we can’t teach “heart.” As a mentor once
said, “ I believe we must be brave and forthright with
our internal and external business partners; stay true to
our own values and to our commitments, yet act with
consideration for others interests, needs and feelings.”
What are you looking forward to down the road?
Layton has worked in the Bay Area for years, but with
the acquisition of Fernandes & Sons, we now have a
solid base to build from. With the addition of a local
office with experienced builders and a deeply-rooted
knowledge of the local market, our future is bright and
it’s exciting to think of the opportunities we have to more
fully integrate and expand together in one of the fastest
growing markets in the country.
