We Salute Our Veterans
The City of Downey will be holding a special Veterans
Day Ceremony on Friday, November 11, 2011, honoring
all who have served our country. The ceremony will take
place at the Downey Theatre Courtyard area, located at
8435 Firestone Blvd, beginning at 10:00am. City officials
will be present to take part in this special event. The public
is invited to attend the ceremony to pay tribute to those
who are serving, and have served our nation in times of
war. For more information on the Veterans Day Ceremony,

Volunteer to Keep Downey Clean and Beautiful
City of Downey’s 26th Annual
Holiday Toy Collection Program
All cleanups are from 9:00-10:00am.
No need to register; just show up by 8:45am.
Get in the holiday spirit and donate NEW, UNWRAPPED
TOYS to needy children through the Downey Council
PTA H.E.L.P.S. “Christmas Basket Program,” the Fire
Department’s “Operation Santa,” and other local children’s
programs. The toy collection will run from November 28
through December 16.
Designated toy drop-off points are: Downey City Hall,
Downey City Library, Barbara J. Riley Community and
Senior Center, all Downey Fire Stations, all Downey public
schools, and many local businesses displaying a City toy
collection box.
For more information on how you or your organization
can get involved in the Holiday Toy Collection Program,

Extra Leaf Collection During November
During the month November, CalMet Services will
provide FREE pickup of extra yard waste from residential
customers. Call CalMet Services at 562.259.1239, ext. 244
at least one business day prior to residents’ collection day
to schedule service. There is a limit of FIVE bags, trashcans
or bundles of yard waste per pick-up.
Christmas Tree Recycling
CalMet Services will pick up Christmas trees from
residential customers on their regular trash day from
December 26 through January 13. Commercial accounts
(businesses and apartments) must call CalMet at
562.259.1239, ext. 7 for FREE pick-up of Christmas trees.
Trees must be set out at the curb, not by trash bins.

System
The City of Downey’s
public
transit
system,
DowneyLINK,
operates
Monday through Friday
from 6:30am to 6:30pm
with
four
circulating
routes. All routes begin and
end at the Downey Depot
Transportation Center located at 8150 Nance Street (one
block south of Firestone Blvd. off Downey Avenue).
The fare is 50¢ a ride with free transfers to the other
DowneyLINK routes when transfers are sequential. Riders
may transfer from one DowneyLINK route to another – ask
the Driver for a transfer. (Note: MTA transfers or passes
are not accepted on DowneyLINK and DowneyLINK
transfers are not valid for use on MTA vehicles.)

30-Use Bus Tickets
$15/book
Starting on Monday, August 1, 2011, riders may purchase
a 30-use bus ticket book available for $15 per ticket book.
The 30-use bus ticket books are non-refundable, nonreplaceable, non-transferable. We are not responsible for
lost, damaged or stolen ticket books; please keep in safe
place because lost, stolen or stolen ticket books will not
be replaced. The 30-use bus tickets will allow riders to
use tickets on each boarding in lieu of cash and can be
deposited in the fare box. Transfers between routes are
still free. For your convenience, 30-use bus ticket books
are available for purchase Monday through Friday. Cash
or check only, made out to the City of Downey. Ticket
book locations and hours are:

Green Line Access
The Southeast route of DowneyLINK will embark and
disembark passengers at a stop south of the Lakewood
Green Line Station on Gardendale east of Lakewood Blvd.

Downey Dial-A-Ride
Dial-A-Ride serves senior citizens (65 years or older)
and the disabled community. To apply for this
valuable program, please call the Dial-A-Ride office at
562.904.7215.
This service is a “shared ride,” curb-to-curb service
for individuals who cannot use DowneyLINK. Trip
reservations for medical appointments may be made one
week in advance. Reservations for all other trips may be
made one day in advance
starting at 8:00am on a
“space available” basis. Six
Dial-A-Ride buses operate
Monday through Friday,
three buses operate on
Saturday, and two buses
on Sunday. The fare is 25¢
a ride.

appointment. Office hours are Monday through Friday
from 8:00am until 4:30pm and Saturday from 8:00am until
3:30pm. Closed for all City holidays.
MTA Bus Passes
One- or two-week MTA bus passes may be purchased
anytime during City Hall’s regular business hours. In
addition, if you have a TAP card, the MTA fare payment
system, you can now have your TAP card electronically
loaded with passes at the Downey City Hall which is
located at 11111 Brookshire Avenue, Downey, CA 90241.
The Cashier’s window is located on the ground floor
directly across the lobby from the front doors.
Senior citizens, disabled persons, students, and
vocational passes may be obtained during City Hall’s
business hours, Monday through Friday, 7:30am5:00pm. City Hall is closed for the following holidays:

National Literacy Month
Guest speaker: John Zickefoose, Literacy
Advocate. He learned to read at 35, now he is
on the Corona/Norco School Board.
John Zickefoose had a secret: he didn’t know how to read.
He began his literacy journey when he was 35. He now

Practice PSAT Exam and Score Session
Free
Kaplan Test Prep will be proctoring a practice PSAT exam
for 9th and 10th graders. The actual PSAT is typically
offered by high schools to 10th graders in mid-October.
Scores will be returned Tuesday, August 30; both students
and parents are welcome to attend. Students will also
receive information and tips on taking the PSAT. Please
bring #2 pencils and a calculator. Students must be

Practice SAT Exam and Score Session
Free
Kaplan Test Prep will be proctoring a full-length practice
SAT to show students what to expect in a test-like
environment. Scores will be returned on Wednesday,
September 28; both students and parents are welcome to
attend. Students will receive a comprehensive analysis of
their performance on the test, detailing individual strengths
and weaknesses at the score session. This practice exam is
open to 11th and 12th graders. Please bring #2 pencils

All registration fees must be paid at
the Downey Community Services
Department, 11111 Brookshire Avenue, (562) 904-7238,
Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 5:30 pm, or the
Barbara J. Riley Community & Senior Center, 7810
Quill Drive, Downey, California, 90242, (562) 904-7223,
Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, Saturday,
10 am to 2:00 pm. Registration can be taken by phone, in
person or unless otherwise noted.
CASH, CHECK, VISA, DISCOVER, AND MASTERCARD
will be accepted as a form of payment for all activities offered
by the Department. This will include: facility reservations,
class and sports leagues registrations, excursions, special
events, special services, and any other fee activity unless
otherwise specified.
Each class start dates are listed. For example: Yoga, Tue/
Thu, Sep 6, Oct 4, Nov 1, Dec 6 (each of these represents
session start dates).
Class registration will begin Thursday, August 25, 2011
for ALL class dates listed in Community Services Guide
(UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED) on a first-come, firstserved basis, until the classes are filled. Class/program
registrations will not be accepted without the fees.

registering and/or attending City
recreation classes and events, you are

Sign-up early for classes. Avoid the cancellation of classes
due to low enrollment before the first day of class to ensure
that the teacher meets their minimum. Registration must
be completed by the second class meeting, no prorating of
class fees.
Fall holidays have resulted in classes cancelled on the
days landing on City-observed holidays. The classes have
been extended to accommodate the schedule, and no class
sessions will be shortened.
REGISTRATION WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED BY THE
INSTRUCTORS. Outdoor class starting dates are subject
to change due to weather conditions. All Community
Services programs and class fees are subject to change.

Combo Dance for Tots

movements, arm and foot positions for ballet, and creative,

Due to popularity and demand, a random selection
process for class registration will be utilized
and held at the Barbara J. Riley Community &
Senior Center (enter through front lobby for
instructions). ONLY one ticket per child’s name.
A PARENT/GUARDIAN MAY REGISTER NO MORE
THAN ONE CHILD FOR THE PROGRAM, UNLESS
TWINS. Birth certificates and immunization records are
required at registration even if these documents have been
required for other classes. Child must be potty trained;
no pull-ups. Parent participation is required at least once
a month on a pre-determined date; parents will not be
allowed to attend otherwise.

A Safe Place to Play
Free
Recreation Leaders conduct and supervise outdoor
programs planned for the elementary school-aged
youth. Youth can play games and complete their
homework. Note: All programs are closed on
inclement weather (rainy or cold days). Children
are encouraged to remain at the park, but are free to
come and go at any time. The staff is not responsible
for children who choose to leave the park. Dennis
the Menace Park closes at dusk. Take advantage of
this free program.

Looking to get a head start on work prior to your 16th
birthday? Trying to find a way to give back to your
community? Looking to receive volunteer hours required
for school? Volunteens is just right for you!
Volunteens is a structured program for middle and high
school youth to volunteer their time, learn work skills,
and gain leadership experience while making worthwhile
contributions to the community.
The opportunities are endless in the Community Services
Department. You could be working at a park site, within
City Hall, or placed within our city library, police and/or
fire department. Applications will be reviewed in March

Volunteens must attend a bi-monthly meeting and work

movements used in Egyptian dance will be described in

Community Folk Music Jam

At a folk music jam, the participants sit in a circle formation
with their acoustic instruments. The facilitator (Bea/Jim)
ensures that the “lead” participant has their opportunity
to lead the tune, pass, or request the group play a tune
with someone else leading the music. The facilitator also
ensures a continuum of activity throughout the jam.

This training program is designed to improve a person’s
balance and mobility and reduce the risk of falling. Special
exercises are included in the program that will help you
walk better, be able to get out of chairs easier, and be more
safe when moving about the community. Individuals
interested in participating need to pick up a packet and get
a doctor’s signature, which needs to be returned by August
31, 2011. A pre- and post-assessment will be administered
to identify individual needs and demonstrate progress.
The pre-assessment will be conducted the week of Sep 13,
2011. Individual appointments will be made.

Kaiser Permanente Fitness Center (50+)

The Kaiser Permanente Fitness Center at the Barbara J.
Riley Community & Senior Center is specifically designed
for adults ages 50 and over and features a selection of
cardiovascular and strength training equipment including
treadmills, lifecycles (stationary bicycles), recumbent
stepper, bench and leg press, as well as a variety of free
weights. Fitness training orientation: required before
using equipment. Orientations only done in English;
any other language you need to bring a translator. Once
participants complete a one-time orientation, they can
workout during Center operating hours. Closed-toed
shoes and towels required. No children and persons
under 50+ allowed in the Fitness Center. Call 562.904.7223

develops fundamental athletic skills, including throwing,

This development league provides girls with the
opportunity to participate in an environment where
sportsmanship and team spirit are emphasized.
Professional coach and college level interns coach the girls
8-13 years of age. Fee includes professional coaching and
training, game uniform, Sparks jersey, WNBA/NBA game
ticket, officials, and awards. Registration begins Aug 27.
Proof of age required at the time of registration. Teams
will be organized and practices will begin the week of

Men’s Open in Southern California, delivers in-depth

Facility Reservation Policy (fees apply)
Consider having your meeting, baby shower, birthday
or graduation party at the Barbara J. Riley Community
& Senior Center, an activity room, or picnic shelter at a
Downey park. Accommodations are available for 15 to 200
people. For groups of 50 or more, reservations are required
for picnic shelter and field play use.
Reservations for picnic shelters and activity rooms are
available to Downey Residents only. For more information,
call the Community Services Department Mon-Thurs from
7:30am-5:30pm at 562.904.7238.
Reservations for ball diamonds and fields on city parks
are available to Downey residents and non-residents. For
more information, call the McCaughan Gymnasium MonFri from 11:00am-5:30pm at 562.904.7128.
Banquet and meeting room reservations are available
to Downey residents and non-residents. For more
information, call the Barbara J. Riley Community & Senior
Center Mon-Fri from 8:00am-5:30pm at 562.904.7223.
Moonbounces/jumpers are allowed with picnic shelter
reservation and proof of insurance. No alcohol or amplified
music permitted. All reservations must be made at least 14
days and up to 6 months in advance.

Come and join us for a night under the stars at the Columbia
Memorial Space Center as we participate with people from
around the world in viewing the moon and stars through
high magnification telescopes.
