Station #7 News
Congratulations Graduates
Station 7 would like to congratulate the graduating class of 2006. In
particular we would like to congratulate our members John Baker, Jordan
Stahl, and Aaron Strain who upon graduation became our newest full
(non-junior) members.
Summer is Here!
Summer is here and we will all be spending more time outside with our
families. While the sun is a welcome change from cold, dark wintry
weather, it can also be dangerous. Try to stay out of the sun during the
hottest hours of the day, properly protect your skin with sunscreen, and
drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid too much physical activity, spending too much time in the sun, or staying too long in an
overheated place as these can cause heat-related illnesses.
Fire Safety
The 4th of July is just around the corner and we encourage you to attend
the Annual Fairfield Fireworks Display. If you do plan to use fireworks
at home then the following safety tips will help.
• Observe any burn bans if in place
• Light fireworks in a wide open area away from anything that could
catch fire
• Read instructions on the fireworks before using them
• Don’t allow children to light fireworks
• Keep a bucket of water or garden hose handy
• Keep pets inside
• Don’t try to relight dud fireworks
• Keep fireworks away from open flame (in closed box)
• Burns need water for 10 minutes

Here’s some safety things you may not know or hear about that could
help your child this summer:
 Having long hair that’s not tied back can be
dangerous. A swimmer tries to get a breath
of air and only gets a breath of hair.
 Boys swim suits that are long with a lot
of material can be a real drag in the water.
Even though they may be in style, if your son is
a beginner, or even if they are on swim team, you should consider
getting them the tight-fitting type of swim suit. It’s much easier
for them to swim and learn the strokes correctly when they aren’t
fighting all that drag.
 Sunscreen only works if it has time to soak in. Putting it on right
before they get into the water only makes them slippery. When
you know they are going swimming, put the sunscreen on at least
30 minutes before going into the water.
 No one should swim within 24 hours of having diarrhea. Even
chlorine can’t kill some of those bugs!
 The worst message a parent can send their non-swimming
youngster is that it’s OK for them to go anywhere in the pool
without someone next to them in a flotation device. ANY NONSWIMMER SHOULD BE WITHIN AN ARM’S LENGTH OF
A RESPONSIBLE ADULT AT ALL TIMES WHEN IN AND
AROUND THE WATER. Those that are dependant on flotation
devices have a much harder time learning to swim properly as their
body has been trained to be vertical in the water. They are also
more likely to think they can jump in anywhere and just “hang”
and they will pop up to the surface. Only use flotation sparingly,
and not the first or the last thing the child does in the water.
 Never swim with gum or candy in your mouth. When you swim,
you breathe in through your mouth and it’s possible to choke.
 Swim shoes aren’t meant for swimming. They create drag and
make the legs heavier. For children that get their feet rubbed raw
from the bottom, encourage them to keep their feet up more and
swim/float more.
 Any time you have a back yard pool party, it’s best to hire a lifeguard. Call one of the area pool companies to find one.
The Texas Terrapins Swim Team is a year round USS swim team in it’s
second year. We have a two week trial for anyone that would like to
try out and see if our team is right for you. Visit our website at www.

MORE FUN FOR PACK 533
We had our spring campout on April 29th and 30th at Lake Somerville
Birch Creek. We had beautiful weather and a great time!
First, the scouts learned how to throw a frisbee, how to catch it and then
how to play ultimate golf. There were six boys that got “holes in one”.
Congratulations! All scouts that participated received the Ultimate Sports
Belt Loop and Pin. And yes, even the adults got into it. We were able to spy
on some of them as they too made it across the ultimate golf course.
Secondly, some dens used some of the afternoon for den activities - some
held den meetings, some did conservation projects (picking up trash - and
there was quite a bit too), some did some fishing and bird watching and
some just hung out! All in all, lots of fun!
Third: on Saturday evening we had April Pack Meeting. We recognized
Gabriel Roberts as being our top Scout Fair Ticket Salesman, as well as
Robert Smead, Michael Shirley, Matthew and Michael Owen. We also
recognized 37 of our scouts with their respective ranks - had 14 Tigers,
12 Wolfs and 11 Bears achieve their rank. GREAT JOB BOYS!!!
Our next event is Graduation and Cross-over to be held on May 18th at
New Kentucky Park. We will be awarding ranks for the remainder of the
scouts in our Pack and having them all cross over into the next rank.
In June, some of our scouts will attend Cub Scout Day Camp. They’ll
participate in lots of fun activities while working on rank achievements
and electives. We would like to thank these parents for volunteering and
making it possible for our scouts to attend: Jim and Michelle Cartwright,
Robert Noyes, Denise Semrick, Lissette Smead and Annette Thomas.
As for our summer, we have lots of fun events planned!
June: Pool Party
July: 4th of July Parade, Picnic
August: Roller skating
Please look at our website, www.pack533.com for more details.
As you can tell, we have quite a bit of fun which is what Cub Scouting
is intended to be. Any boy from 1st to 5th grade can join Cub Scouts!
If you would like to join or have questions, please feel free to contact
our Cubmaster, Brian Roberts at [email protected]. We look
forward to hearing from you!
CUB SCOUT PACK #1533 WRAPS UP THE SCHOOL
YEAR WITH LOTS OF EXCITEMENT
The last months of the school year have been filled with lots of fun and excitement for the Cub Scouts of Pack #1533.
Our Webelos Dens participated in “Webelos Do Your Best” sponsored by the
Sam Houston Area Council. Webelos I and II Scouts enjoyed camping and
participating in various sessions. Some sessions included specific Activity
Badge work in a “show-and-do format”, while others introduced the Webelos
Scouts to skills useful in the Boy Scout program. All the boys that participated
had a great time.
On April 22, 2006, Pack #1533 participated in the Sam Houston Area Council’s
Scout Fair—”RACE TO SCOUTING”. Held at Reliant Arena, the Fair drew
thousands of Scouts and their families who enjoyed the opportunity to mingle
with other Scouts, participate in hands-on activities, taste gourmet camp-fare
foods, and take home great memories. The boys worked very hard selling Scout
Fair tickets. This year Pack #1533 sold a total of 312 tickets earning over $1200
for use by the Pack.
Pack #1533 is pleased to announce the TOP SCOUT FAIR SALESMEN:
1st Place –30 tickets
Edwin DeCora (Den 3)
Wesley Foster (Den 4)
Brandon Lord (Den 4)
2nd Place –20 tickets
Peyton Huber (Den 4)
3rd Place –15 tickets
Andrew Lane (Den 7)
Ethan Schultz (Den 5)
Way to go boys!! Thanks for your hard work!!!
The Annual Spring Family Campout was held the weekend of April 28th-30th
at Jellystone Park in Waller. In addition to camping through some rough weather
(a severe thunderstorm blew through the camp in the early morning hours of the
29th) the boys enjoyed all the really great recreational activities offered at the
campground, including an awesome water park. The Scouts also participated
activities to earn various beltloops and electives, including Badminton, first aid
and building a simple machine. Of course the highlight of the weekend was the
Pack meeting held around the campfire.
The excitement doesn’t stop here, though. The Cub Scout’s of Pack #1533 have
big plans for the summer, too.
Upcoming events include:

“Crossing Over”/ Rank Advancement
Pack Meeting, Ault Elementary
May 27, 2006

Cub Scout Pack #1533 is all about. It’s not too late to be a part of it all. Every
boy is welcome; regardless of what school he attends. If you know of a boy

an action packed ball game.
We will have group seating in the area adjacent to the Astros bullpen.

Dental Tips:
Is Overwhitening a Concern?
Many folks that are teeth whitening are aiming for an unnaturally white
shade by overusing the products. Excessive use of bleaching products
can damage tooth structure and gums. Some overly enthusiastic
patients experience tooth sensitivity, blisters and discoloration on
teeth and gums.
Custom-fitted trays are used to hold the gel, reducing risk of hydrogen
peroxide leakage. With over-the-counter products, the trays are usually
not form-fitting. But even under ideal conditions, studies show that
often less than 50% of the whitener is still in the trays one hour after
application, indicating a lot of leakage.
Caution should be taken against buying tooth whitening products over
the counter. The ingredients may be correct, but the balance of the
ingredients may be improper, resulting in a low pH, thus damaging
the enamel of the teeth.
Make sure whatever whitening product you get has an ADA (American
Dental Association) seal of acceptance. Most over the counter products
do not have that seal, thus may cause an unknown harm.
If you have any further questions, please ask your Dentist and they
should get you the latest information.

Rail could save commuters hundreds of dollars, advocate says …
Chamber hosts informative luncheon on school finance, tax issues …
HOUSTON (April 28, 2006) – As gasoline prices escalate, so does the potential savings that a commuter rail system would provide those traveling to and from work,
according to the chairman of a nonprofit group that is developing a commuter rail
line that will run along the U.S. 90A corridor between the Texas Medical Center and
Houston’s southwest suburbs.
HOUSTON (April 25, 2006) – As the 79th Texas Legislature was nearing the midway
mark in its third special session to pass new school finance legislation, the Cy-Fair
Houston Chamber of Commerce held a special luncheon to educate taxpayers about
the issues at hand. The event, held today at the Crowne Plaza-Brookhollow Hotel,
featured remarks by David Anderson of HillCo Partners LLC, an Austin lobbying
and consulting firm.
Dalton Smith, chairman of Southwest Commuter Rail Corp. of Texas, was the guest
speaker at the April 27 meeting of the 290 Passenger Rail Coalition, an initiative
launched by the Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce to advocate rail service
from College Station to Houston.
Although cost savings is only one of a long list of benefits of commuter rail systems, it
may be near the top of almost every commuter’s list as gas prices hover near or above
the $3-per-gallon mark. According to Smith, the average commuter rail rider saves
$400 to $1,500 annually in transportation costs – and those numbers are probably low
because they do not take into effect the recent spike in gasoline prices, he said.
In addition to saving consumers money, riding the rail saves them time. Texas drivers
spend an average of 50 hours a year in traffic delays, and many employees must leave
early to ensure they aren’t late for work, Smith said. Commuter rail along the 90A
corridor will give Texas Medical Center employees the certainty of knowing exactly
how many minutes it will take to get to work, he said.
Other potential benefits of commuter rail include reduction in air pollution and the
economic development that is often fueled by such rail lines, he said. Commuter rail
lines in both the U.S. 290 and 90A corridors are part of METRO’S Solutions plan,
but the commuter rail service could be decades away without advocacy groups such
as the 290 PRC to build a consensus and help move plans forward. The 90A line was
thought to be 20 years away from being built, but could now be operational within
four years, Smith said. “The most important thing you can be doing is the gathering
of absolute support for the project,” he said. “I think getting the resolutions in support
of commuter rail in the 290 corridor is important.”
The 290 PRC has taken a number of steps in building a consensus, Cy-Fair Houston
Chamber President Darcy Mingoia noted. Thus far, the 290 PRC has signed resolutions from City of Jersey Village, City of Navasota, Commissioners Court of Waller
County, Copperfield Community Association, Cypress Creek Flood Control Coalition, Greater Houston Partnership, Waller Area Chamber of Commerce and Waller
Economic Development Corporation.
Pubic-private partnerships are also vital, Smith said. 90A Commuter Rail Partners
include Fluor Enterprises, Inc., which will provide Project Management and Construction Management services; Bombardier, which will provide passenger rail cars
and be responsible for the control and signaling systems, and will support METRO
in maintenance of this equipment; and Public Project Management LLC, which will
provide financing expertise and project oversight.
METRO’s light-rail system, as well as bus lines, provides important infrastructure to
help make a commuter-rail system viable, Smith said. “To have a viable commuter
rail project, you need to have a very detailed and connecting system in and around the
city, you need to have a very detailed and connecting system in and around the city, so
that those coming in on commuter rail can get around to other locations,” he said.
With the Legislature down to its third and final strike as it seeks to pass a new school
funding tax bill and facing a June 1 deadline imposed by the Texas Supreme Court in
which to do so, Anderson found a metaphor for the issue in a sign posted near some
steps in the state Capitol building.
“There’s a sign that reads, ‘Watch your step – historical steps, uneven,’ “ Anderson
said. “Of course, they’re talking about stairs. But I thought that this is true about
legislation as well. Historical steps in the Texas Legislature are usually uneven, and
that’s where we are right now in terms of our circumstances with school finance and
changes in the tax policy, which is a byproduct of this.”
Anderson believes Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and the state Legislature
have all taken seriously the June 1 deadline, which mandates that the Legislature either
reach a new school funding agreement or risk a cutoff of state funds to public schools.
On April 24, the House passed a sweeping new business tax that is the key component
of Perry’s proposal to cut school property taxes.
The new tax would expand the franchise tax, paid now by only a relative handful of
businesses, to all corporations and limited liability partnerships with annual revenues
in excess of $300,000.
But the most important task facing legislators is providing a system for school boards
across the state to have meaningful discretion when they set local property tax rates,
Anderson said. Currently, there is a $1.50 per $100 assessed value maintenance and
operations tax cap, and with most districts at or near the cap, they have little or no
opportunity to raise additional revenue.
“When you boil it down, that’s what the Texas Supreme Court ruling is all about, and
that’s what the special session is all about,” he said. “At the end of the session, the
question will be whether meaningful discretion has been established. If the answer is
yes, we’ll all feel better about it.”
Anderson observed that in an election year, citizen frustration with the Legislature,
which failed in its regular session and two previous special sessions to agree on a
new school funding and tax plan, is running high. Now, Perry and leaders in the
House and Senate are cooperating better than they have since Perry took office in
2001, he said.
The burden of funding public schools has gradually shifted to local taxpayers as the
state provides funding for less and less of districts’ budgets, Anderson noted. In CyFair ISD, only 27 percent of district funds come from the state, Superintendent David
Anthony told those gathered.
“All we ask of our residents is that they stay informed about the issues,” Anthony
said.
As an example, Smith noted, one of the planned station stops on the 90A line is Westbury, where a new METRO signature bus line will take passengers to the Galleria
area. As helpful as commuter rail would be in saving commuters time and money
and reducing pollution, Smith underscored that it is not a money-making venture.
“The economics of building and operating a commuter rail system are well known:
They do not make money,” he said. Smith said he expects a shortfall of about $10
million on the 90A line, some of which could be made up by METRO. However, he
added that it’s possible that tax revenue generated by new development spurred by
the rail line could offset all or part of the funding gap. For more information about
the 290 Passenger Rail Coalition, visit www.290prc.com or call the Cy-Fair Houston
Chamber at 281-955-1100.

by offering a variety of life-enhancing services.
Families of hundreds of school-aged children in the Cypress/

Harvest Bible Church
Did You Know?
The modern-day church is fulfilling a 2,000-year old prophecy about her today. The Apostle Paul warned: For the time will come when they will not endure
sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate
for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away
their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths (2 Timothy 4:3-4). Aside
from the fact that today’s church has abandoned the Bible in favor of flowery
speeches that last less than 20 minutes with little to no biblical reference, and
aside from the fact that the most popular books among self-proclaimed Christians
are the Purpose Driven Life and Your Best Life Now, now the church is being
duped with another myth: The Da Vinci Code.
The Bible says that a time will come when people will not endure sound
doctrine. Of course this has been fulfilled over and over but especially in our
day. People don’t want to hear about God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
They want to hear about themselves! They want to know what God can do for
them, and preachers today not only know this, they accommodate it. How?
Through short speeches devoid of doctrine that promise you an intimate marriage, a healthy and wealthy lifestyle, and a god who just wants you to be happy
no matter what you do. In today’s church it’s all about YOU! But in the Bible
it’s all about GOD. This is what doctrine is. But people don’t want doctrine.
They’d rather be relaxed, relevant, and real, and churches are eating this up by
accommodating this trend. Be reminded, however, that although these churches
are big and rich (and have huge music programs!), most of them are anything
but godly.
The Bible says that people will not only abandon sound doctrine, they will
also find teachers that tell them what they want to hear – not what they need
to hear. They want to have their ears tickled – a figure of speech that denotes
people who want to hear positives, funnies, and light-hearted religion. Of course
in today’s pragmatic church (churches that do “whatever works!”) pastors are
all-too-willing to give the folks what they want. After all, it works! Tell folks that
God is all about them finding their purpose in life, and off they go completely
focused on themselves. Or, tell someone that God wants you to have your best
life now, and off they go naming and claiming – something Jesus, Paul, Peter
and the rest never taught and never did.
The prophecy that people would turn away from truth and turn aside to myths
is exactly what’s going on today. The Da Vinci Code is just another pitfall for
folks to stumble into. Though it’s labeled as fiction, the author (Dan Brown)
says it is fact! Yet the irony is that while it accuses the early church fathers of
creating a cover-up about Jesus, it’s the novel that’s filled with lies. The whole
thing can be debunked, however, in about 15 minutes. But it’s entertaining!
Another prophecy the Bible gives is found in 2 Timothy 3:1-6, and it describes these people: “But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will
come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money… arrogant… unholy…
unloving… lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of
godliness, although they have denied its power. Avoid such men as these.” Yes,
today’s church has a form of godliness, but it is devoid of any real power. So,
“avoid such men as these.” Don’t be duped. Evaluate a church based on what
they believe about God’s Word. Then see if they really preach it. If they don’t,
then they don’t really believe it.
Harvest Bible Church is a non-denominational, non-charismatic church
where God’s Word is upheld in our worship. Worship is at 10:30 each Sunday
morning at Ault Elementary. We have a full children’s and youth program and
adult Sunday School which begins at 9:30. Consult our website for more info.:

What Does the De Vinci Code Really Mean?
Neighbors, truth seekers, and concerned Christians, you are invited to a

Grande Games, and Cactus Crafts and Missions. The 2006 Operation Kidto-Kid missions program will warm kids’ hearts and minds and allow them
to share the joy of God’s love. Kids will learn what it means to help others
as they create a special blanket that says “Jesus loves me” in both English
and Spanish. Plus, everyone will personalize a Spanish Bible Book to send
along with the blanket to a child in Mexico. Allow your child to be part of the
world’s largest focus mobilizing kids in serving others around the world. This
VBS promises to be the most exciting and innovative VBS ever. This is an
evening VBS from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Come join the Fiesta to celebrate Jesus,
beginning Monday, July 24th and running through Friday, July 28th. Look
for posters with all the details in neighborhood stores. Summer is coming
quickly. Mark your calendars for the week of July 24th – July 28th and call
now to make your reservations. Don’t let your kids miss this adventure of
a life-time!!
Come Grow With Us!
Our Sunday morning service starts at 10:45 a.m. We enter into God’s
presence through a powerful time of praise and worship. The message is a
Word for due season.
We offer a separate children’s church for elementary aged children, Toddlers church for ages 2 – 5 and a nursery for the wee ones under 2 years of
age. Come join us and learn how the Holy Spirit equips Christians to live
victoriously in today’s challenging world. We are located just 1.5 miles off
Hwy 290 at 15010 Mueschke Rd. For more details, please contact us at (281)

Good Shepherd United Methodist Church
Rick Ivey’s Ordination Celebration
We are proud to announce a celebration in honor of our Associate Pastor,
Rick Ivey’s ordination. We will host a covered dish event on Sunday, June
4 at 12:30 pm following our late service. The United Methodist Men have
graciously offered to provide meat so we are asking each family to bring
a dish or two to share. Those who have names beginning with the letters
A—L should bring a casserole or vegetable dish and letters M—Z should
bring salad, bread, or fruit. Dessert, drinks, and paper products will be
provided.
Saturday Nights in June
Is the Bible really from God if it was written by man? Do Christians
believe in reincarnation? What does the church do with my money? If you
have questions like these we want you to come to Good Shepherd United
Methodist Church Saturday Nights in June for F.A.Q’s, a series of nights
that answers your questions on God, the Bible, church, and Jesus. You can
submit you own questions by visiting the Common Grounds section of www.
goodchurch.us.
Women’s Summer Bible Study
Who are you...on the inside? Are you growing into the image of Christ?
Or are you far from being all you want to be in the Lord? If you’ve ever
wondered how you can truly change, now there’s hope. Jesus invites you to
stop trying to develop godliness through your own efforts and to start relying on the indwelling Holy Spirit. Join us on Tuesday evenings beginning
June 13th at 7:00 pm in Room 211 as we take a look at Kay Arthur’s “Lord,
Only You Can Change Me”. This 9 -week study will guide us through the
Beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount so we can begin living a truly
transformed life. For more info, contact Cynthia Blackshear at 281.304.0869
or [email protected] .
Women Wanted! – Mark your calendar for Friday, June 23rd for a
Spiritual Sleepover at Good Shepherd! This will be a great time of fellowship and FUN! We will have several activities going on all night and will
conclude with breakfast on Saturday morning. We plan to start with praise
and worship in the Sanctuary at 7 pm followed by an icebreaker, then supper
of pizza, hot dogs, popcorn. After dinner we will enjoy games, movies, crafts,
scrapbooking, karaoke and of course, talking and giggling far into the night.
We will even have fun with a scavenger hunt! Midnight ice cream sundaes
along with lots of junk food snacks all night long will complete the night of
leisure. Bring your cot or air mattress and comfy PJ’s. Cost will be $10 per
person. For more info please contact Aynne Daugherty at 281.373.1822.
Stephen Ministry Milestone – Two Years of Service
The Stephen Ministry of GSUMC celebrates a milestone this month. Our
first class of trained lay ministers was commissioned in June of 2004 and
our second in June of 2005. Stephen Ministry is comprised of trained lay
people from within our membership to provide one-to-one Christian care and
spiritual support to hurting people in and around our congregation. In addition to 50 hours of initial training, our lay ministers participate in 18 hours
of continuing education each year to remain equipped to provide Spiritual
support to those in need. If you or someone you know could benefit from
the care of a Stephen Minister, please contact Noreen Kennedy in the church
office. All inquiries and care will be confidential.

A Walk a Day
The popularity of walking as a fitness activity is growing by leaps and bounds. Low
risk and easy to start, walking has proved its
health benefits in numerous studies.
An eight-year study of 13,000 people found
that those who walked 30 minutes a day had
a significantly lower risk of premature death
than those who rarely exercised.
A regular walking program can help:
· Reduce blood cholesterol
· Lower blood pressure
· Increase cardiovascular endurance
· Boost bone strength
· Burn calories and keep weight down
Get ready
A walking program is simple to start. All
you need are comfortable clothes and shoes.
Layer loose clothing, keeping in mind that
exercise elevates the body’s temperature.
Shoes specifically designed for walking are
best.
Every workout should begin with a brief
warm-up and a few simple stretches. Walk
around the house or in place for a few minutes to get the blood flowing to the muscles
before you attempt to stretch them. Although
walking primarily works the major muscles
of the legs, don’t forget to stretch your back,
shoulders and arms. This will help to loosen
up any tension you may be carrying and make
your walk more enjoyable as well as more
effective.
Get moving
Beginning walkers can make their workouts less strenuous by limiting how fast and
far they walk. Keep in mind the following:
· Walk short distances”
Begin with a five-minute stroll and
gradually increase your distance.
· Forget about speed”
Walk at a comfortable pace. Focus on
good posture, keeping your head lifted
and shoulders relaxed.
· Swing your arms naturally”
Breathe deeply. If you can’t catch your
breath, slow down or avoid hills.
· Be sure you can talk while walking”
If you can’t converse, you are walking
too fast.
CATERING &
DELIVERY
AVAILABLE!
Get fit!
Walking is one fitness activity that allows you numerous options. Once you have
reached a point where you can walk a few
miles with relative ease, you can start to vary
the intensity.
Walking hills, in addition to increasing
your cardiovascular endurance, is a great way
to tone the legs. Concentrate on lengthening
your stride or increasing your speed. And
don’t forget to reward yourself after each
workout with a few minutes of relaxing
stretches to help prevent sore muscles.
Listening to lively music while you walk
is also a great way to energize your workout.
But if you wear headphones, keep the volume
down and watch out for traffic that you may
not hear.
Keep track of your progress. Many experts
recommend that you walk a minimum of 20
minutes a day. But there are no hard and fast
rules. Fit walking into your schedule whenever you can. That may mean two 10-minute
walks each day, or even hour-long walks two
to three times a week. The best schedule is
one that keeps you walking and keeps you
fit!

Summer Activity for Kids
Chemical Garden
Use chunks of broken brick (about the size of a large egg), porous
rocks (not slick ones), any pieces of synthetic foam rubber, or cellulose sponge. Sponge is good because it can be cut in any shape.
(Christmas tree, etc.)
Wash pieces of brick in plain water until thoroughly wet. If you use
sponge, wet it and wring it out. Place in a shallow bowl (do NOT use
metal) and arrange the damp pieces to fit your fancy, placing some
on top of one another.
Into a glass jar, put 4 T water, 4 T bluing, and 4 T ammonia. Pour
this over wet rocks, being sure to dampen all of them.
Put a few drops of food coloring - one color or several, and a few
drops of bluing on one or two of the rocks. Now take 4 T salt and
sprinkle evenly over all. You may stick in a plastic flower or two, if
desired. This will look like an Oriental garden.
Within a few hours, “snowflakes” will begin to form. In less than
six hours, it is building beautifully. They grow even faster the second
day.
After 2 days, add 2 more tablespoons water and 2 T ammonia. Be
careful and do not pour this on the crystallites, but in the edge of the
bowl. This will make it start growing again; and when it gets to the
size you want, stop adding the extra fluid.

If it is dumped over, just put it back, add more original mixture and
start over. If it grows too fast, and grows over the side of the bowl,
get a damp tissue and wipe it off. This might damage furniture. It
will damage marble and any metal.
Coal may be used for garden. Use six T salt, 6 T bluing, 6 T water
and 1 T ammonia. Pour slowly over coal. Drop food color from
medicine dropper all over mixture. Use one or several colors. If some
places seem bare, sprinkle on a little ammonia water.

Creating a Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden
(NAPSA)-With just a little bit of planning, you can have beautiful
butterflies and hummingbirds flocking to your garden. That’s good news
for gardeners because not only are these winged creatures fun to watch,
they’re essential pollinators.
The key is to know what hummingbirds and butterflies look for, which
is flowers with nectar. So when you select nectar-rich plants for your
garden, look for varieties that are both prolific bloomers and have a long
bloom time. Prune your plants to prevent excessive woody growth and
encourage the growth of new flowers.
Try these tips from Monrovia, one of the leading growers of plants:
• Hummingbirds are attracted to bright orange, red and hot pink blossoms. Their long, narrow beaks can reach the nectar of long, tubular
flowers such as the Balboa Sunset Trumpet Vine with its large scarlet
blossoms, and the Goldflame Honeysuckle, which has vibrant yellow
and red flowers. Other good choices are the Super Red Flowering Maple
and the Navajo series of Salvia, available in many colors, including
bright red, rose and salmon red.
• Not all hummingbirds feed at the same height, so plant an array of
shrub sizes and climbing vines for food sources.
• Butterflies are attracted to yellow, orange and red. They too are seeking nectar, but their mouths, or proboscises, are much smaller, so they
prefer flatter flowers they can perch on while they feed. The no-fail plant
for butterflies is the Butterfly Bush, or Buddleja. However, since they
can get too large for some gardens, consider the Petite series of Dwarf
Butterfly Bushes. Petite Indigo has a profusion of lilac-blue flowers;
Petite Plum sports reddish-purple blooms and the Petite Snow has pure
50
Fairfield Community Gazette - June 2006
white blossoms.
• Lilacs are favorites of butterflies, but don’t typically flower well in
climates with warmer winters. The Blue Skies Lilac produces huge
clusters of light lavender-blue flowers that don’t require winter chilling.
Butterflies love Coneflowers, such as the bright pink Pixie Meadowbrite.
Asters are great because they bloom well into fall. The new Farmington
Aster has a profusion of lilac bloom clusters that butterflies flock to.
• Supply a source of water. Hummingbirds enjoy flying through a fine
mist, which cools them off. Butterflies like drinking from shallow
puddles. Position some large flat rocks in a sunny spot, on which butterflies can sun themselves to warm their wings.
