53½lb
A nine-acre Yateley club water has
thrown up a new lake record in the
shape of one of the biggest fish in
the area. The mirror, known as
Taffs, became the new personal
best of Richard le Gros from Flint,
Hampshire, when it tipped the
scales at 53½lb (above), coming
just 13 hours after the 23-year-old
had also beaten his PB common
with The Small Tail Common at
37lb 6oz (inset).
Richard told Carp-Talk: “I’ve
fished the lake on and off for the
past few years, catching mainly
twenties and the odd thirty, but
hadn’t caught any of the big girls,
until now. The first night was quiet,
apart from the noise of a fish
crashing out near the island. I chose
to move swims and started casting
to the island, offering boilie
hookbaits on helicopter rigs and
baiting with around 100 free
offerings per rod. At four o’clock that
afternoon, the indicator pulled up to
the top as the fish kited left. After
arcing into it, the fish plodded
around slowly for a good 15 minutes
before finally giving up the ghost
and succumbing to the net, when I
realised it was The Small Tail
Common. At 37lb 6oz, I was well
pleased to have caught a new
personal best common.
“With the rod back on the spot, I
topped up the swim with another
100 boilies and waited to see if
anything else was in the vicinity.
Throughout the night, I had a
number of line bites, before
eventually, at five o’clock the next
morning, the indicator hit the blank
of the rod and I was away again.
The fish also kited left in a slow,
ponderous fashion, picking up some
weed on its way. Again, it took a
good 15 minutes to coax the fish
within reach of the landing net, but
eventually, with one scoop, what
looked like a huge mirror was mine.
With the day still yet to dawn, I
couldn’t quite tell what fish it was,
but I was in no doubt when I peered
inside the net – it was Taffs.
“The fish generally drops a lot of
weight after spawning, but has been
Barry Oconnor makes yet another final
The Team Carp-Talk captain is through to yet another final after a
dominant display in his Broadlands Carp Cup qualifier. Barry Oconnor, the
2012 British Carp Angling Champion with son, Ben, recorded almost a
wire-to-wire victory thanks to his winning weight of 90½lb, beating Danny
Grassick in second on 67lb 6oz, Clifford Glover in third on 47lb 10oz and
Ryan ‘Trigger’ Green in fourth on 46lb 1oz.
The anglers had to endure torrential rains and strong winds during the
29-hour event, but once Barry took the lead on Friday lunchtime, there
was no catching him. Barry and Danny will go through to the 12-angler
final on the weekend of 7-9th March 2014, in which they will contest a top
prize expected to be £2000.
There are still places available in some of the qualifiers, which can be
booked by contacting Ricky Moody on 07763 990888.

putting on weight steadily since
the summer. I knew it had come
out at 47lb-plus the other month,
so realised it could possibly go
fifty, and the feeling when it tipped
the scales at 53½lb was just
mental. Thankfully, one of the lads
on the lake was on hand to help
with the weighing and photos
before it was time to slip her back.
The rest of the session passed by
with little incident, but I couldn’t
grumble in the slightest.
“I’m starting a new job this
week, so I won’t have much
chance to get out for a little while,
but there are still a few more fish I
want to target when I do get back
on the lake.”
Richard’s helicopter setups
incorporated Amnesia hooklinks
and size 4 Korda Choddy hooks,
baited with unnamed boilie
hookbaits.
Late news...
Down in Surrey, the Chertsey
biggie has been out to long-time
carper, John Beecher, at 54¼lb,
while over in Oxfordshire, Jon
Caul bagged a 43¼lb common
from Linch Hill’s Christchurch
Lake. Photos and full stories
next week.
