A
rirang is a popular form of Korean folk song. For a long time, the Korean people expressed their joy and sorrow in the simple tune of
Arirang. They sang Arirang to alleviate the tiredness of their daily lives or to share their happiness with others. During the 35 years of the Japanese
Occupation Period(1910-1945), a time of great hardship and pain, ordinary Koreans and Korean Independence Armies overseas sang Arirang in a
hope for independence. Arirang is now ubiquitous because it is sung not only by the 70 million South and North Koreans on the peninsula, but also
by 7 million Korean nationals abroad. We have a new dream for Arirang in the 21st century. Our dream is to someday sing Arirang with the 7 billion
people of the world.
There are different variations of Arirang from region to region. Around 40 versions and 4,000 variations of Arirang are estimated to exist. In recognition
of its value as a marker of the Korean national identity, UNESCO registered Arirang on the Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2012.
Popular versions of Arirang

Seoul Arirang 서울 아리랑
Seoul Arirang has been passed down in the Seoul and Gyeonggi-do region. It is the most widely spread version of Arirang today. It became popular
after its use in the famous Korean movie Arirang (1926), directed by Na Woon-Gyu.

Jeongseon Arirang 정선 아리랑
Jeongseon Arirang has been passed down in the Jeongseon region of Gangwon-do. It is known to be the oldest version of Arirang. There are
700~800 variations, which contain lyrics of various motifs, such as love, break-ups and satire.

Miryang Arirang 밀양 아리랑
Miryang Arirang is the most known version in the Gyeongsangnam-do region. A story says that this song was created to honor a beautiful
woman named Arang, who was killed by her admirer.

Jindo Arirang 진도 아리랑
Jindo Arirang is a popular version in the Jindo region of Jeollanam-do. It was mostly sung by a group of women, and it
is often characterized as direct, straightforward and with no refrain from cursing, swearing or cracking jokes.
