LOCAL HISTORY
& ARCHIVES
Since 1914, Hamilton Public Library has been collecting and preserving Hamilton’s history. The collection
continues to grow and covers a wide range of local history topics from sports events, places of worship and
people, to heritage buildings, landmarks, and much more.
Archives link the past, present and future by ensuring that the records of today are preserved for future
generations to understand the life, ideas and thoughts of their original creators.
Don’t miss Flashbacks – a collaboration between the Hamilton Public Library, The Hamilton Spectator
and Cable 14. Flashbacks is a half hour show that airs on Cable 14 and is hosted by Spectator reporter and
musician, Mark McNeil and HPL archivist, Margaret Houghton. You can link to Flashbacks from the library

ALL ABOUT SUMMER READING
When is Summer Reading
Club offered?
A Club for Everyone!
Online registration starts the week of June 6 and the
program runs from Monday, July 4 to Saturday,
August 28, 2016.
You are your child’s first and best teacher! Read together
over the summer and your family will be able to exchange
tabs for reading incentives, submit tabs for branch draws
and earn a free book.
How to sign up?
Visit any of our 22 library locations or 2 Bookmobiles
starting June 6 to pick up a Summer Reading Club badge
and register your child in the Wild! 2016 TD Summer
Reading Club is a joint initiative with Library and
Archives Canada.
How much does it cost?
Storybook Club - Ages birth to 5 years
Summer Readers - Ages 5 to 12 years
Kids who read over the summer can track their reading
online, enter branch draws and collect reading incentives
including a free book.
Reading Buddies - For kids who have finished
grade 1 and are up to 12 years of age
How does the club work?
Kids are paired with a volunteer Reading Buddy for
individual attention and help with reading. Reading
Buddies helps children learn that reading is a fun and
rewarding experience that can be shared with family and
friends. For more information about Reading Buddies
locations and to register in person at your closest branch,
see page 26.
Our Summer Reading Club is designed to be fun and
flexible and to fit your busy summer schedule.
Teen Readers - Ages 12 to 18 years
It’s FREE! Don’t have a library card? Kids and teens can
sign up for a FREE library card so they can take home
some great books.
ü Every child who participates in the club receives a badge. Stop by your local library branch to pick your
badge up.
ü Club members register their badges online at
kids.hpl.ca to set goals and track their reading
progress.
ü Track how many books you’ve read this summer with
our online program. Each time a Club member tracks
their reading, they earn badges that recognize their
reading achievements and are automatically entered
into draws for reading incentives.
ü Each badge has six detachable tabs. Participants
redeem the first tab for official TD Summer Reading
Club booklets and stickers. Of the remaining five tabs,
each of two tabs qualify participants to enter draws,
two tabs can be redeemed for small reading incentives
and one tab can be exchanged for a book.
ü The back of the badge lists different things for you
to do – read three books, attend a program, draw a
picture inspired by a story and more.
16
Are you between the ages of 12 and 18? Pick up a Teen
Summer Reading card, read over the summer, track your
reading online and earn up to three free books and enter
for a chance to win a reading incentive.

READING BUDDIES
Reading Buddies is a literacy program for children to practise their reading skills. The program
runs from Monday, July 4 through Saturday, August 27 (except August 1).
Who can join?
Children must have completed grade one and can be up to
12 years of age.
How does the program work?
Children are paired with a volunteer Reading Buddy for individual
attention and help with reading. The program is not designed to teach
children how to read. As children progress through the program, they
receive rewards to mark their success. Reading Buddies helps children
learn that reading is a fun and rewarding experience that can be
shared with family and friends. Contact your local branch to
register. You will be contacted by phone with the
dates and times your child will meet with
his/her buddy.
