T he Northwoods start here
Centrally located in Wisconsin, the greater Mosinee area
is the Gateway to the Northwoods. Nestled along the
beautiful Wisconsin River, the Mosinee area rests between
Wausau, Stevens Point, Wisconsin Rapids and Marshfield.
Interstate 39/Hwy 51 is the main highway, and provides
instant and easy access to Mosinee and the surrounding
areas, traversing the center of the state from north to south.
State Highway 29 runs east and west just north of Mosinee,
allowing quick access to other nearby communities. In
addition, the regional Central Wisconsin Airport (CWA)
resides on the east side of Mosinee, offering daily flight

Mosinee History
Mosinee and the surrounding communities have a long
and rich history that includes French fur trappers, loggers
and more.
The City of Mosinee was originally known as Little Bull
Falls—named for the “roaring” falls and rocky, river
passage on which it was situated. The landscape was
that of a huge virgin forest with white pine so large in girth
it took several men putting their arms together to circle a
single tree.
In 1839, John L. Moore was the first to utilize the power
of the river at Little Bull Falls. He built a sawmill on the
westside of the river and commenced sawing the logs that
were floated down the river to him. Hard-working men
and women followed Moore into the area to make their
fortunes. A tannery, a gristmill and a blacksmith shop were
soon added to Mosinee’s early industries.
Upon arriving at Little Bull Falls in 1844, a man named
Joseph Dessert went to work at Moore’s sawmill and in his
logging camp. By 1849, Dessert found himself a partner in
the sawmill and in 1856, Dessert and partners succeeded
in building a series of bridges that gave passage over the
river at Little Bull Falls. A village was platted on the west
side of the river and lots were put up for sale and the town
began to flourish.
As early as 1790, a French trapper named
John Lewis DuBay wintered in what is now
Knowlton, just south of Mosinee. In 1834, his son
John Baptiste DuBay established a fur trading
post there along the Wisconsin River. The trading
post is now covered by water with the creation
of Lake DuBay in 1942.

Dessert was successful in moving a post office to the new
village and on July 22, 1857 the post office and village were
renamed to Mosinee—after Chief Mosinee of the Wisconsin
River Band of Chippewa that camped at Little Bull Falls
as they moved from summer to winter grounds. In the
late 1790’s, Chief Mosinee had saved the lives of several
trappers.
All who have come to the greater Mosinee area have worked
diligently to keep the area strong. Our commitment to home,
community and area businesses brought us the great
communities we live in and work in today.
The paper mill was finished along the river in 1911 and
housed two distinct industries—pulp making and paper
making. With a successful industry in place, the Mosinee
business district flourished. They had a strong industry to
employ and support the families of Mosinee and a strong
business district to provide them their necessities and a few
of the finer things in life. The Mosinee Paper Mill (Wausau
Paper) celebrated 100 years in 2011 and is currently owned
by Expera Specialty Solutions.

Whether you like to fish, hunt, camp, ski, hike, bike, run, snowmobile,
enjoy a relaxing boat ride or a picnic under a shade tree, the greater
Mosinee area and surrounding communities won’t disappoint.
Our scenic waterways are filled with a wide variety of fresh water
fish including bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, northern pike, muskie,
walleye, yellow perch and sunfish. If you are a trout fisherman, visit
one of our many streams.
There are over 16 boat landings between Knowlton and Wausau
with access to: Lake DuBay, Big Eau Pleine Reservoir, Mosinee
Flowage, Half Moon Lake, Lake Wausau, Wisconsin River, Rib River
and Eau Claire River.
Out for an hour, the day, weekend or year-round recreation, there’s
an endless variety of exciting activities for you and your family
throughout the area.

Canoe Portage Park located off of River Road on the east side of
the river, has a canoe portage, a small boat landing and excellent
access to the river and the 1,377-acre Mosinee Flowage.
The Wisconsin River Woods Trail in Mosinee has a wide multiuse asphalt trail located along the west side of the Wisconsin River
in the downtown area. Pedestrians and bicyclists can travel the trail
from Chuck’s Boat landing north to Main St., Mosinee.
Mosinee Recreation Center and Park offers unsurpassed
facilities, athletic sites and play areas. Its large enclosed arena is
used for skating, expos, shows and Mosinee Hockey Association
hockey games. The Badger State Games and other hockey and
figure skating competitions are hosted at the Mosinee Recreation
Center’s ice rink facilities. The park also hosts the Mosinee Softball
Field, home to the Mosinee Alumni Softball Tournament.
The Wisconsin Valley Improvement Company
River Park in Mosinee offers two boat landings, fishing pier,
playground and picnic facilities. This 27-acre community park offers
two VFW shelters, gazebo and information for rent. Pack up the
kids and treats to enjoy the day under one of the many shade trees.

Chuck’s Boat Landing in Mosinee provides two boat landing
areas along the Wisconsin River, just below the Mosinee Dam, a
public access point to that section of the river.

woodlands on the north shore of the Big Eau Pleine Reservoir.
Camping is available May1-Oct 31 and amenities include a
public swimming beach, thee boat landings, hiking, biking
and skiing trails, nature trails, picnic tables and shelters, tent
and camper sites, outhouses, playground and disc golf area.

Wausau Curling Center is located at 1920 Curling Way, Wausau.
It’s the largest curling facility in our United States with eight sheets
of ice. The club hosts league play and several annual bonspiels,
including the Men’s Invitational and Highlander Women’s bonspiels,
and the Badger State Games. The Wausau Curling Club also annually
hosts the Tiegte High School Bonspiel, named after longtime Wausau
West curling coach Dennis Tietge and considered to be the largest
and longest running high school bonspiel in the United States. The
club’s season usually runs from late October through March. Learn to

Marathon County Sports Complex is located at 602 E. Kent St.,
Wausau. It houses 15 irrigated fields of varying sizes including a lit
championship field, parking, concession building, playground and
restrooms. The Complex is primed for youth and adult competitive
and recreation soccer as well as lacrosse and other field sports and
special events.

In and around Mosinee and the surrounding area you’ll find
restaurants, cafes, pubs and local bars that serve tempting
dishes to appease every appetite — from family-owned
eateries to major chains with down-home-style meals to fine
cuisine.
The Mosinee area restaurants include The Pinewood
Supper Club located at 1208 Halfmoon Lake Dr., Mosinee.
Head out to Hammer Down Bar for a famous hammer
burger or pizza on County Road B. On Main St. in Mosinee
is Sit ‘N Kabitz, a coffee and sandwich shop. Enjoy hand
cut steaks and seafood at Two’s Company Restaurant &
Lounge, S & S Cafe or The Stage Stop Restaurant can
fill any breakfast desire. Not much time to spare, drive thru
Subway or McDonald’s of Mosinee.
Travel south on I-39/Hwy. 51 and stop in at Mullins Cheese
off of County Rd. DB at 598 Seagull Dr., in Knowlton for local
cheese and dairy products. Mullins Cheese Retail Shop has
expanded to a fully stocked gift and food service retail store

Educating Our Community
Education is a major factor that has not only drawn
people back to this area, but also has kept families
here for generations. Our outstanding, quality education

KIDSTOWN U.S.A. has been running a licensed Before and
After School program located in the Mosinee Elementary
School since 1993. A fun and safe environment for your
child with after school activities that include helping with
homework, use of the computers, gym, outside playground
and swimming. Daily activities include but are not limited to:
art, games, building blocks and cooperative learning. For

The E.J. Creske Community Center, located between the
middle and high schools, contains a modern auditorium,

was remodeled and received a large addition in 2008.

Northland Lutheran High School Northland Lutheran
High School was established in 1979 in Merrill, Wisconsin.
In 1987 the school moved to a temporary home in Wausau

Transportation
Central Wisconsin Airport
The Central Wisconsin Airport (CWA), jointly owned by
Marathon and Portage Counties, was first conceived of in
the mid-1960s by a group of prominent community leaders,
businessmen, and area legislators. By 1969, it began
offering commercial air service in an era that transitioned
from aircraft such as the piston-powered Douglas DC-3 to
jet powered aircraft requiring longer and wider runways and
taxiways than the aircraft required that they were replacing.
These early leaders understood the need to own, develop,
and maintain an airport that would meet the economic
development needs of the central Wisconsin region.
Throughout its history the airport has enjoyed a state of
steady growth, in terms of facility and capital improvement
expansion, and in terms of numbers of outbound passengers
using the airport, referred to as enplanements. While the
recession of 2008 and associated high fuel costs have
reduced commercial air service options, the industry has
rebounded resulting in an improvement in the airport’s air
service market performance.
Facility and capital improvement development is central
to the CWA mission. Over the years: runways were built,
lengthened and reconstructed; snow removal and ice
control equipment, and Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting
equipment were purchased; the Central Wisconsin Air
Traffic Control Tower was erected and put into operation;
and the airport terminal was remodeled-several times. All
these improvements were performed to ultimately serve the
customer, to provide services and amenities, and to provide
for safe and efficient air travel.

In the nearly 47 years of airport operation the airport has
accumulated $84.9 million in capital assets, and contributes
$71.5 million in economic impact annually to the central
Wisconsin region per the 2012 Economic Impact Statement
performed by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation,
Bureau of Aeronautics. What’s amazing is that since its
inception, the airport has been an economically viable
regional enterprise that contributes 564 full-time equivalent
jobs to the state’s economy and being self-sufficient at the
same time.
Self-sufficiency is the cornerstone of the airport’s foundation.
Except for a little over $2.0 million investment in 1967, no
property tax levy dollars have been used in the operation,
maintenance or capital development of the Central
Wisconsin Airport. That is an enviable position.
The airport has been renovating and updating the terminal
area of the airport including: an expansion of the facility to the
east and to the west. Those two phases of the project are
now completed. The central portion of the terminal is now
being remodeled to match the new east and west wings.
Substantial completion is due by the end of July 2015.
By mid-May, the original parking lot will be reconstructed
to improve storm drainage, and surface conditions. By
the end of construction season, the parking lot and the
entrance drive will have been completed, with new lighting,
landscaping, and wayfinding signage. This will be the last
project of the terminal area renovation, which started in 2010
with the building of the Rent-A-Car facility.
The airport is planning a grand reopening of the facility for
the spring of 2016.

The City’s progressive economic development
initiatives are being acknowledged on both a
statewide and national level. In 2012, the City
of Mosinee was presented with the National
Outstanding Small Town Planning Award from the
American Planning Association for the Mosinee
Downtown Improvement Plan. The plan identifies

The City of Mosinee’s Mayor-Council form of government
consists of a part-time Mayor and six alderpersons that are
elected for two-year terms. A professional City Administrator
is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of the
City on behalf of the Mayor and City Council. The City of
Mosinee provides a full range of progressive and effective
governmental services that are truly unique for a community
of our size.
The entire City organization is committed to creating
new business and employment opportunities within our
community. The City’s beautiful historic downtown commercial
district offers a relaxing atmosphere to our residents and is
certain to become a regional travel destination for visitors.
To ensure that the downtown commercial area continues to
grow while maintaining its special historic character, the City
has created a Downtown Development Plan and a related
Tax Incremental District (TID) for the purpose of properly
planning and promoting commercial development within the
downtown area.

The City of Mosinee Police Department’s full-time officers are
highly visible and active throughout the community, especially
within our local school system.
The Mosinee Fire District (which consists of the Townships
of Bergen, Mosinee, Knowlton, and the City of Mosinee) is
located on Rangeline Road in Mosinee. This regional fire
department provides us with the unique ability to provide
highly trained personnel that have access to the latest firefighting technology and advanced emergency medical
equipment to promote the continued safety of our community.
Incorporated as a Village in 2002, the Village of Kronenwetter
is the largest Village by size in the State of Wisconsin at
53 square miles. The Village President presides over the
seven-member Board of Trustees and votes as an ex-officio
trustee. Village trustees and the President are elected for twoyear terms in spring non-partisan elections. The urbanized,
residential neighborhoods of Kronenwetter’s northwest slowly
transform into the rural beauty of the Village’s forests and
agricultural land. Kronenwetter is bordered on the west by
the Wisconsin River, split north and south by Interstate 39/
