City of Temecula
The City of Temecula Community Services Department proudly
presents the Winter/Spring 2016 Guide to Leisure Activities. Our
signature Temecula Chilled events return, beginning with Holiday
Magic on Main Street, the annual Christmas Tree Lightings, Santa’s
Electric Light Parade, Pennypickle’s Winter Wonderland, and the
New Year’s Eve Grape Drop, just to name a few! Old Town will be
decked out with thousands of twinkling lights, the popular Temecula
on Ice skating rink returns to Town Square Park and the Old Town
Temecula Community Theater has an impressive line up of holiday
performances. The season will be filled with opportunities for you
and your family to share in the magic of Winterfest!
As spring blooms in Temecula, take advantage of the annual Easter
Egg Hunts, Temecula Rod Run, Special Games and the new Mardi
Gras Family Festival. Kids will enjoy a wide array of Spring Break
Enrichment Camp opportunities and classes that are available for
youth and teens. Spring is also a great time to get your children
ready for summer with the start of our Aquatics programs and
swim lessons. Stop by the community garden at the Mary Phillips
Senior Center to see about donating your time planting, harvesting
and weeding the garden. Perhaps you and your co-workers
would like some friendly competition by joining the new Corporate
Softball League. Whatever your interest, the Community Services
Department has something for you!
From our Board of Directors and Commissioners to our dedicated
Community Services team, we are committed to providing the
citizens of Temecula with quality community service experiences for
all to enjoy.
Respectfully,
Tracy Masters

Staff Spotlight
My name is Julie Pelletier, and it has been my
pleasure to serve the residents of Temecula
for the past 24 years. Serving in the capacity of
the Recreation Superintendent since 1996. I
have been afforded the opportunity of working
during the early years of incorporation when
Temecula residents numbered approximately
30,000, to today, where the population now
exceeds 109,000. As one can imagine, the
opportunity to experience such tremendous
growth while maintaining a priority to serve
others and making a positive difference in
their lives has been extremely rewarding!
JULIE PELLETIER
The term “quality of life” for Temecula
Recreation Superintendent
residents has always been at the heart of
what we do and can been seen throughout the City at numerous parks, facilities
and programs, as well as, through special events, individual development and
plenty of FUN!
It is with a heartfelt goodbye that I will be retiring in December and as I reflect over
the years, I am reminded that serving in Temecula has been an experience that I
will forever cherish. It has not been just a job, but rather an experience that I liken
to a relationship with an extended family. I know that I leave behind an amazing
team of professionals that have served, and will continue to serve this community
exceptionally well. It is I, who is actually humbled and blessed to have been a part
of this amazing journey.
It may take me awhile to adjust to not “always” having Temecula on my mind,
but one thing I know for sure is that the City of Temecula is a special place that I
will sincerely miss a great deal. As I “sign-off” at this, my final contribution to the
Guide to Leisure Activities since 1992, I leave you with the words so often spoken
in this profession…Creating Community Through People Parks and Programs…
THAT’S WHAT WE DO!
We’re Here for You!
Hello fellow Temecula residents! Let
me tell you how blessed I am to work
in such a great community and serve
all of you! As I do not have to tell you
how wonderful the City of Temecula
is, let me tell you a little about
myself...I graduated from California
State University of Long Beach with
a BA in Recreation and I pursued
my career with the City of Temecula.
James willcox
I have been employed with the City
Recreation Supervisor
since 1997 and have enjoyed every
day that I have been here. Currently serving as a Recreation Supervisor in the
Community Services Department, overseeing sports and seeing the city grow
has been a great adventure. My job duties include overseeing all city fields for
youth and adults, field rentals, field allocation, tournaments and the Park Ranger
program. Besides the obvious of being a sports enthusiast, I like the outdoors,
camping and spending time with my family and friends. Working for the city has
been a great opportunity to give back to the community. Take your passion and
make it happen on the field and I will look forward to seeing you out there!

As a parent, I know how important it is to know
who is teaching your child; therefore, I would like
to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My
name is Brooke Groepper a.k.a. Miss Brooke. I
feel incredibly honored to have been an instructor
with the City of Temecula since 2011. When I was
a little girl, it was my dream to become an early
childhood educator and I am beyond proud to be
the instructor of Bear Cub University, Temecula
Glitz Cheer and the Girls Night In series! Activities for children are my passion.
I do what I love-and love what I do! I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal
Studies (Elementary Education) from San Diego State University. From there,
I completed the Credentials Program at Cal State University, San Marcos.
When creating Bear Cub University-the goal was to implement an enrichment
program that focuses on both social and educational development in a fun
and structured environment. My family, husband Sean and our 3 daughters:
Sydnie (10), Mackenzie (8) and Scarlett (2 months), love living in Temecula
and being a part of this great community. In my “spare time,” I enjoy sipping
Starbucks, visiting Disneyland and watching New England Patriot Football.

youth enrichment Classes
Welcome to Bright Start for Kids, where
children will discover that learning is fun!
We provide hands-on learning with exciting
theme-based curriculum. Each day it’s a
bright start with our activity centers (art,

sensory, science, books, games and puzzles)
and rotation stations for small group learning.
Our large group circle time is the highlight of
the day with calendar, letter sounds, colors,

weekly theme to life! Our successful Zoo-phonics early reading program is a child
favorite. Your child will develop social skills, cooperative play and independence
while also making new friends! We love to celebrate birthdays, holidays and
special events that go along with the theme. Our Little Tots program is designed
for children who will not attend kindergarten in August 2016 and our Pre-Kinder

Instructor spotlight
Hi, I’m Jill Foster and I love being an instructor
for the City of Temecula. I am lucky to teach not
only the Bright Start for Kids program, but the
Sweet Art Decorating classes too. Since 2006,
I have enjoyed meeting hundreds of families
in our community that benefit from programs
offered by the city. As a children’s director/
teacher for over 27 years, it is a thrill to show
children that learning is fun. I get excited about
all the discoveries and friendships made in our classroom. As a professional
decorator, my passion is teaching how simple it is to create beautiful cakes,
cookies and cupcakes. My “Sweet Art Made Simple” YouTube channel has
over 4.5 million views with the focus on showing the quick and easy way to
bake and decorate. I love teaching hands-on classes to adults and kids. It is
amazing to see what they create!
I am a single mom to two boys, Nick and Tim. When not teaching, I love
to watercolor paint, take weekend getaways, and find sushi bars and quaint
coffee shops to meet friends. I look forward to having you or your child in one
of my classes!

Rocket Readers
These small-group classes offer easy to
understand reading instruction presented in
a way that makes reading fun. Children will
improve their skills while reading riddles and
jokes and playing games. Typically, students
who are already reading will accelerate
quickly to reach their full potential. For
those struggling, Rocket Readers takes the
mystery out of reading and gives children
confidence in themselves. Reading finally
becomes enjoyable and exciting! These
standards-based classes are designed to supplement any curriculum used at
school or home. Instructor is an experienced, credentialed teacher. Children
are assessed and instruction is modified accordingly.

Wonders! Speed Math
Ages: 4-14 Years
All of math is so much easier when
students have their basic math concepts
solidly locked in. If a student is missing
just a few, it can significantly handicap
progress in more complex math. 5th
-8th graders can labor excessively
because they have a few unaddressed
deficiencies or because their calculating
speed is slow. Students will be tested
and deficiencies identified. Effective
techniques will then be used to help easily master facts with speed. If your child
has mental blocks with certain problems, these will be addressed. Save your
child and yourself from hours of frustration and lay a solid foundation for great
success in math.

Good manners are very important, and not
only do etiquette classes teach children
good conduct, but they also help to establish
core values and principles. Manners
are a significant part of communication

on how to be respectful and you will see a

Bonjour! My name is Celine Cossou and I have
been offering hands-on cooking classes for kids
and adults for the City of Temecula since 2009. I
am also a Wellness & Nutrition coach, cookbook
author, recipe developer, personal chef and food
blogger. I offer a wide array of classes including
the popular Date Night Cooking Series, French
Dessert Series and From Market to Table, where
participants tour the Temecula Farmers Market
for the freshest ingredients and make a Wine
Country feast. During school breaks, I offer fun
and delicious baking and cooking camps for kids and teens.
My way of cooking is simple and easy to follow even if you have never cooked
before. Recipes use natural, organic, local, and seasonal ingredients and are
geared for the home cook to recreate for family and friends. Classes also
include some nutrition and an introduction to ethnicity and culture. The best
part? You eat what you make during the classes - so, grab your friends and
family and join me as you share a fun experience with good company and
delicious food!

Instructor spotlight
“Konnichiwa” Hello! My name is Julio Miranda.
First of all I would like to say, I am grateful
for the opportunity to be the Karate Instructor
for the City. I have been teaching Okinawan
Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan, Karate for the City of
Temecula for over six years and been honored
to have witnessed several students grow in
many positive ways. I had been making the
commute to Temecula for the same amount of
time until recently and now very proudly reside
in the City. I bring to Temecula over ten years of martial arts experience
and continue to travel to Okinawa, Japan in order to continue my growth
in karate. My prior military and law enforcement experience, as well as
my current vocation with a non-profit, enables me to share a vast range of
experience and knowledge with my students. My goal is to have them focus
on their daily routine, behavior, and strengths in order to align them with
their highest potential. It is just a nominal fee to join, but you will continue
to reap the benefits of this positive, life-changing experience, for years to
come! See you in class!

Instructor spotlight
Yvonne Gaudet has been an artist
since she was very young, which led
her to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts
degree from the prestigious Art Center
College of Design in Pasadena, CA.
After graduating, she co-owned a
graphic design studio in Los Angeles
for 12 years. When she relocated to
Temecula, she started a mural and faux finishing business, which she ran in
Riverside, San Diego, and Orange counties for 11 years before developing
her Yes, You Can Draw enrichment program. She has been teaching
drawing and painting for The City of Temecula and in the Temecula Unified
School District for ten years. Additionally, Yvonne is a fine art painter and is
represented by the eminent Xanadu Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ. Her current
collection of paintings can be viewed at xanadugallery.com.
Yvonne takes tremendous pride in and receives countless rewards from
sharing her passion for creativity with her students. Her approach to teaching
art is not about mastering a specific skill; rather, she emphasizes learning to
see the whole picture when creating art. She helps her students to understand
how all the components in artwork are equally important and fit together to
make the whole finished piece. This approach to learning in general, she
believes, is extremely beneficial throughout life.

miss the Professor’s VERY special party.
NYEAN...Still Celebrating
Thursday, December 31, 1-2:30pm
Fee: $4/person (ages 2+)
The party’s over..not really! The Workshop may be a mess of confetti from New
Year’s Eve at Noon (and we may be doing a bit of sweeping!). That just adds to
the festive atmosphere, right? This session won’t be as elaborate as the earlier
celebration and won’t have any of the bells and whistles (figuratively speaking),
but if your littles missed the countdown at noon, they’ll be able to play anyway.

and the solar system tonight.
February
Fingerprint Foolishness
Friday, February 5, 5:30-7:30pm
Fee: $5/person
Beaker talked the Professor into messing around with ink and now the two of
them are obsessed with fingerprints. Or, in Beaker’s case...well, anyway, you
get it. We promise any ink involved will be the washable kind. Yikes.

Friday, February 19, 5:30-7:30pm
Fee: $5/person
The Protoprop. The Flutter Faller. The Flying Napkin. The Straw de Loop. Yep, the
Professor has played with all of these and now he’s offering them to you for your
experimentation pleasure. Should be interesting.
Digging Science
Friday, February 26, 5:30-7:30pm
Fee: $5/person
Join us tonight as we play amateur archeologists to see what we can dig up...you never
know what you’ll discover! (Gold? Rocks? Dino bones? You’ll have to be here to see.)
March
Friday, March 11, 5:30-7:30pm Fee: $15/children only; must be 5-10 yrs old
Professor Pennypickle’s love of disguises isn’t just a random interest...he is totally
enraptured with anything and everything “spy” related. (Maybe that’s why you never see
him? Or know what he looks like?) Tonight we’ll share some spyology secrets, like codes,
gadgets and training, to help you with your own top secret mission. (Remember - keep your
real identity a secret. Don’t worry, we’ll never tell.) This will be a lock-in event and children
will need to be pre-registered. You may send food and drinks for your child if you wish.
Touch whaaat???
Friday, March 18, 5:30-7:30pm
Fee: $5/person
Well, it’s not as bad as all that...we wouldn’t have you touch anything too icky. But we will
be putting your sense of touch to the test with experiments that challenge the messages
that tiny little nerve endings are sending to your brain.
The Workshop is open March 21st!
Friday, April 8, 5:30-7:30pm
Fee: $5/person
Step 1: Convert nuclear energy into straight electricity...Ha ha!! Trust us...if we could, we
would. That won’t stop us from playing with easier ways of defying gravity, though, which
we think you will enjoy. Maybe not as much as the Antigravity Pack that the Professor
successfully invented, but he won’t let us mess with that. Oh, well.
Adventurer’s Science
Friday, April 15, 5:30-7:30pm
Fee: $5/person
Did you know that a good way Scouts and other camping adventurers can start a fire (other
than with flint and steel) is to use steel wool and a battery? It’s stuff like that that makes
us love them! We won’t be starting fires tonight, but we’ll explore (get it? “explore”?...!!)
science that helps earn Scouts their stripes. Uhh...patches. Anyway, it’ll be cool and you
don’t even have to be a “boy” Scout. (Right, girls?)
Hooray for Planet Earth!
Friday, April 22, 5:30-7:30pm
Fee: $5/person
Tonight we’re all going to get into a rocket and view the third rock
from the sun from deep space to see how truly beautiful it is and
to appreciate how lucky we are to live on it. Well no, we’re not
really going to do that. Unfortunately. We’ll have to settle for
having an Earth Day party! And lots of fun experiments to keep
us “grounded”. Some of us don’t feel good when we leave the
Earth’s atmosphere, anyway. Isn’t that true, Beaker? Just saying.
Science Meets Art
KIDS ONLY CLUB: Spycraft
Monday Madness
Make Your Own Antigravity Machine
Fee: $5/person
Friday, April 29, 5:30-7:30pm
Fee: $5/person
Wait...what? There’s a science to art? Well, of course, my friend, and YOU can create
some science art tonight. Uhh...do you have a lab coat? There may or may not be paint.
Mom and Me Night
May
Friday, May 6, 5:30-7:30pm Fee: $5/child; mom or grandma is free!
Your mom loves you and we love her! Bet she’d love some special playtime with you and
we will treat her like a queen as you both discover science while playing in the Workshop.
KIDS ONLY CLUB: Crazy Experiments
Friday, May 13, 5:30-7:30pm Fee: $15/children only; must be 5-10 yrs old
Well, the Professor is at it again and we’re not sure what experiments he’s been working
on that may be demonstrated tonight...you’ll just have to see! We are biting our fingernails
with anticipation. And trepidation. This will be a lock-in event and children will need to be
pre-registered. You may send food and drinks for your child if you wish.
Liquid Magic
Egg-citing Dyeing

Seeking Temecula Valley Treasures
Do you have a Temecula Valley treasure collecting dust? What you think is
trash, just might be a treasure. The past 30 years of tremendous growth is
history. We want to make sure we document and preserve our rich history
for future generations. Old street signs, defunct business or population
signs, photographs, and more all make up the fabric of Temecula history. If
you have something you think would be representative of Temecula Valley
history and interesting to residents one hundred years from now, we want
to know about it! Please call the museum to discuss donation possibilities.
Temecula Valley History
Permanent exhibits represent life in the Temecula
Valley through time and different cultures. Key
stories include the Luiseno Indians, the Mission
San Luis Rey period, establishment of the
Ranchos, transportation influences, including
the stagecoach and railroads, and famous
author Erle Stanley Gardner, known for the
popular Perry Mason series.
Touch Temecula History
Wisdom begins with wonder! Let your children “Touch History” in our
education area, allowing children to experience history with their hands,
hearts and minds. Dress in 1800s fashions, play in our General Store, cook

Places of interest
Veteran’s Memorial
The City of Temecula “Letters Home” Veteran’s
Memorial displays a life-sized bronze sculpture
of a soldier reflecting as he writes a letter home.
The beautiful setting also includes a sheltering
tree that symbolizes the protection provided
by those who selflessly serve our country. The
wall surrounding the sculpture proudly displays
actual “Letters Home” from those who have
served throughout our nation’s history. A final
element to the memorial is the “Path of Honor”,
engraved pavers leading to the sculpture that
were purchased to honor loved ones who have
served our country. For more information, call
(951) 694-6480.
Japanese Friendship Garden
Upon entering the gate and strolling
along the pathway to the right, one will
see the beautiful Japanese Garden.
This serene area of the park represents
Temecula’s long-standing friendship
with our Sister City - Daisen, Japan. In
2004, a small area of the park, which
incorporates traditional elements of a
Japanese garden, was dedicated in
honor of the 10th anniversary of our
Sister Cities relationship. Recently, to
celebrate the 20th anniversary of our
friendship with Daisen, the City added some new features to the garden, including
a Torii gate, garden fox statues, traditional Japanese lanterns, a Japanese-style
footbridge, and beautiful cherry trees that blossom in the Spring.
“Singing in the Rain” & Dutch Tulips
A familiar sight at the Pond is the “Singing in the Rain” statue that was a gift
from our Sister City - LeidschendamVoorburg, Netherlands, following the
attacks of September 11, 2001. As a
symbol of peace and unity between
our two cities, the “mother and child
on a bicycle” statue was created by
Voorburg resident and artist Franz
Kokshoorn and presented to the City
of Temecula in 2002. Eleven years
later, in 2013, another Dutch artist,
Jeroen Stok, fashioned the two large stainless steel tulips you see flanking the
bicycle statue. With the addition of these monuments of peace, your time at the
Duck Pond reveals a tribute to our friends across the globe.
Parks Make Life Better!
park information & locations
The City of Temecula’s park system currently consists of 39 beautiful parks that are available for
public and recreational use. See adjacent park directory for locations and park amenities. Since
incorporation, the City’s park system has experienced extraordinary growth and the number of
citizens and their guests using the park system continues to increase. Therefore, as a community
outreach, the Community Services Department utilizes two Park Rangers and a Park Monitor to
directly assist citizens in understanding and maintaining the safety rules and ordinances within the
park system. Park Rangers also monitor park reservations and events in City parks. The following

Lake Parks
The City of Temecula offers two beautiful lake park settings. Both parks
offer a wonderful display of nature including birds, fish and of course,
the many ducks that call these lakes their home. The City of Temecula
has recently undertaken an educational campaign to enlighten the public
concerning the feeding of ducks and other water fowl. Feeding ducks
“people food” is detrimental to their livelihood and leads to overpopulation,
dietary and nutritional problems, and aggressive behavior. It also
contributes to a decline in water quality, degradation of landscape, along
with significant cleanup and revegetation costs. Pamphlets are available
at the park sites which provide more detailed information. Please join us in keeping our parks and
wildlife protected.
Harveston Lake Park, 29005 Lake House Road
Harveston Lake Park is a 3-acre lake located in the Harveston Community and offers scenic
walking and biking trails, a children’s play structure, and picnic areas.
Temecula Duck Pond, 28250 Ynez Road
The Temecula Duck Pond is located in the heart of the city and offers something for everyone.
The Duck Pond is home to our Veteran’s Memorial and the newly renovated Japanese Garden.
Please enjoy your
parks responsibly!
