The wide variety in food retail is what makes this sector a true challenge for
intralogistics. Keeping an integrated perspective with a view to the entire supply chain will make it possible to significantly increase economic efficiency.
An ever-expanding range of articles as
well as packaging and article displays that
are constantly changing present a major
challenge for the food retail distribution
network. Along with large deliveries to the
stores, new business segments are becoming
increasingly important, leading to changes in
order structures, lower item quantities and
tighter delivery windows. These new segments
include a range of different fields such as
delivery to small branch stores, petrol stations
and shops at train stations as well as home
delivery for e-commerce, m-commerce and
drive-through concepts. With these special
requirements, flexibility in order processing
and article handling is a crucial factor for
success.

range of services in reusables management.
KNAPP's philosophy of making complexity
simple is the basis for all of our system
solutions, to help reduce complexity in daily
warehouse operation and to allow you to
concentrate on what is essential.
The Food Retail portfolio provides a
universal all-in-one solution for picking a variety
of article classes in a profitable, ecological and
ergonomic manner as well as an innovative
solution for handling an entire range of
different standard containers in fully-automatic
operation. KNAPP also offers tailored system
solutions for the fast-growing online food retail
segment and multi-channel applications. Highperformance picking of single items is one of
KNAPP's particular strengths: we have unique
know-how and business expertise in this
field and build on the vast experience from
numerous successful logistics systems.
In addition, KNAPP looks at returns
logistics from an integrated perspective and
has created a system solution specifically
tailored to the demands of reusables
management. The great benefit of this system
approach is a substantial increase in efficiency
due to central sorting processes, and the endto-end, automatic crediting system in real time
guarantees transparent empties tracking and
accurate deposit booking.

Flexibility as the main ingredient
of our recipe for success
The dynamics of the market are developing at a rapid pace. KNAPP brings fresh ideas to
intralogistics with its customized solutions and supplies its customers with the recipe for
success in addressing the ever more sophisticated requirements of the end consumer. Our food
retail experts, Heimo Robosch, Siegfried Zwing, Christian Slanina, Christian Brauneis and Jürgen
Lischka discuss how intralogistics is the decisive factor for both current and future situations
in the food sector.
What does the food retail sector mean to KNAPP?
Heimo Robosch, Executive Vice President: We view
the food sector as an area with enormous
potential for growth for KNAPP. On the one
hand this results from the fact that there are
currently many manually operated distribution
centres and on the other hand there is an
ever increasing number of articles. Supporting
the requirements of the most various sales
channels as well as meeting regulations for
ergonomics means that these completely
manual operations make less sense as they
become less and less competitive.
The tremendous importance that KNAPP
attaches to food retail is shown by the fact
that we have made this sector a separate
organizational unit in the form of a business
unit. This organizational unit includes
KNAPP specialists who have many years of
experience in the sector. We can therefore
provide our customers with the optimal support
in consulting, conceptual design and project
execution.
The KNAPP solution portfolio addresses
the special requirements of food retail. This
includes variety in article shapes, pack units
and article weights, as well as groups of goods
that are diverse in regard to temperature
range and packaging types. Additionally, one
is confronted with a constantly growing article
range and various order structures because
of omni-channel strategies. We fulfil these
market demands in a way that provides our
customers with the greatest possible flexibility
and investment security.

In all of our approaches we follow our
philosophy of low complexity. This means, for
example, in highly automated environments,
using our shuttle technology, that has been
proven a thousand times over, we can cover
all important areas with one system in highlyefficient processes. With future-oriented
technologies such as optically guided picking
using KiSoft Vision, we follow the zero-defect
approach in the warehouse and support
manual processes optimally.
»
A zero defect warehouse
with the trendsetting
KiSoft Vision technology
Which trends are currently keeping the Food Retail
Business Unit busy at KNAPP?
Siegfried Zwing, Director Food Retail Solutions: In
general, we see an enormous trend towards
processing small quantities. This is based on,
for example, the growing e-commerce sector
with all of its variations in click and collect
services, drive-through concepts or direct

home deliveries of food, and especially on the
growing number of small branch stores, such
as petrol stations and shops at train stations.
In some assortments, we are experiencing
another approach: there is an effort to move
towards standard containers, not only to
enhance the cost benefits across the entire
supply chain but also in the sense of carrying
out business in a sustainable manner.
We view the shipment of optimized
and shop-friendly load carriers with the
simultaneous demand of reducing the costs as
a very basic requirement, which we can affect
significantly with our solutions and which we
already fulfil in an excellent manner.
From an overall perspective, food retail
logistics today stands before the huge
challenge of handling an unprecedented
level of variety in an extremely dynamic
environment. Only if we look at the big picture
along the entire supply chain, we will be able to
achieve a crucial competitive advantage in the
medium and long term.
What is KNAPP’s main emphasis?
Siegfried Zwing: With our unique portfolio of
system solutions we push the boundaries of
intralogistics and are in the position to improve
the entire cycle of the value chain in the long
run. Optimizing warehouse logistics is not the
only thing at the forefront: minimizing work
at the point of sale, seamlessly integrating
reusabels logistics, and making the process
chain more efficient and more effective all the
way back to the producer are also important
aspects.
How will KNAPP react to the strong growth in the
online market for food retail?
Christian Slanina, Business Area Manager: KNAPP
is well prepared for this trend. Our many
years of experience but, more importantly, our
market leadership in single item picking are
the best prerequisites for becoming optimally
established in the e-commerce area of the food
sector. The impressive warehouse system in
the Avon distribution centre in São Paulo,
where five million single items are picked every
day, especially underlines our competence in
online business.
We are particularly proud that we already
have as customers e-commerce companies
from the most various sectors. Our OSR
ShuttleTM technologies and the goods-toperson work stations of the Pick-it-Easy family
of products have been the convincing factors.
How are the requirements of e-commerce different
from those of brick and mortar retailing?
Christian Slanina: The shorter the order lead time

the more interested the customer becomes. A
special focus is placed on cross docking fresh
articles, which usually have no stock and must
be picked at a later time than the shelf-stable
goods.
In most cases, a large part of the traditional
food assortment is offered online and the
order lines are very small; in this case, the
goods are picked right into the shopping
bag. This combination is precisely the reason
why our e-Commerce projects amortize so
quickly, because picking small quantities
from a large assortment in a traditional
manner is very expensive due to long labourintensive picking routes that result in lower
picking performances. We offer an optimal
combination of proven technologies such as
our shuttle technologies and goods-to-person
work stations. The combination of manual and

automated processes in our solutions offers an
excellent cost-benefit ratio.
The ideal degree of
automation is crucial
Cost optimization in picking is important
in e-commerce, because compensation must
be made for high transport costs. Stacking the
customer containers in a delivery sequence
is naturally our standard because it reduces
processing time at the customer.
Industry Buzz
How is KNAPP contributing to sustainability in the food
sector?
Christian Brauneis, Business Development: Our
orientation towards sustainability is made clear
in our portfolio. Our solutions for reusables
can handle all the different types of reusable
containers and keep them circulating in the
food sector through. Multiple use of system
containers, beverage bottles and cases
strengthens the idea of reusables. Our
solutions contribute to waste prevention as
well as volume savings during the return
transport. This reduces the number of trucks
needed, which minimizes the emission of CO2.
In designing our systems, we place
great value on the ergonomic design of the
work stations, which helps make the work
environment more attractive at our customers’
facilities. With energy recuperation, start-ondemand and a control system that depends on
the workload, our systems are very efficient.
The required floor space is very low, with no
sacrifice in flexibility. Being able to adjust to
future changes is still essential in today’s
market dynamic.
What solutions does KNAPP offer for reusables
management?
Christian Brauneis: For reusables management,
both sorting and deposit calculation pose a
challenge to a system. Because of the many
different articles, our solutions must be able
to recognize and sort over 1,000 different
beverage cases and 200 different types of
bottles. Additionally, the local stores must
receive their corresponding deposit value. Our
portfolio extends from fully automated high
performance sorting of standard containers
to deposit and container management for
beverage cases to fully automated single
bottle sorting. Image recognition is an essential
component in this area, which we see as one
of the technologies on the cutting edge.
12 | KNAPP AG
On what innovative products for the food sector is
KNAPP currently working?
Jürgen Lischka, Regional Sales Director: We are
working intensely on the next generation of
paperless picking. Right now we are in
the middle of realizing new solutions that
use augmented reality technology. Packing
algorithms are combined with image
recognition pursuant to our zero defect
approach. After years of intense development,
with this innovation we can now demonstrate
alternative possibilities and set new standards
in the sector.

Pick-it-Easy
The perfect blend of
ergonomics and performance
The picking work station, as the place of fulfilment for customer orders, is the central
interface where all of the processes between human and machine come together. A
modern work place is defined by such important factors as flexibility, performance
and ergonomic design. The Pick-it-Easy stations offer a unique work station concept
that integrates exactly these factors.
Refreshing design
Modern work station design has a name:
KiDesign. KNAPP developed KiDesign for the
Pick-it-Easy work station series based on the
most current occupational health information
in cooperation with TÜV Rheinland and
the Occupational Health Centre Graz. The
declared goal was to reduce the work load,
increase efficiency as well as optimize noise
control, user friendliness and design.
»
Reduced workloads

The work stations are the main hubs for
various warehouse processes and facilitate
optimal processing for the entire assortment.
The system guides users through order
processing; the user interfaces feature straightforward design and intuitive handling. This
enables easy human-machine communication,
improved quality and short training periods.

Fully-automatic
palletization
A stack-full of efficiency and gentle handling
Various types of packing units demand a high level of flexibility and care in handling
articles. Here automation often reaches its limits – not every article can be automated
due to its specific characteristics and packaging. Whether articles will remain stable
on a load carrier or not, is a matter of physics. KNAPP combines all ingredients to
make sure that nothing is left to chance – for gentle article handling with any level
of automation.
High-performance preparation
Fully-automatic depalletization and picking
have become increasingly important in food
retail intralogistics.
During goods-in KNAPP distinguishes
between layer and stack-oriented depalletizing.
Efficient forklift devices or robot systems are
used to create compact and stable order pallets
and roll containers based on the mix of articles
and containers, resulting in an extremely costefficient and, at the same time, gentle packing
process. KNAPP is committed to a reasonable
level of automation and to reducing complexity,
for optimal flexibility and economic efficiency
in daily operation. This gives our customers a
competitive edge.

Step by step to a high-quality menu
One step at a time with the specialized KiSoft
Packmaster software. In order to transport the
valuable goods to the stores in a space-saving,
gentle handling process with minimum work
effort in the stores, the system uses a packing
algorithm to calculate the ideal sequence for
the various types of containers. The software
considers stability, store-based grouping and
packing density on the load carrier. According
to these features, the stackers are supplied
with adequately sequenced containers and
then create order-based pallets. Configurable
palletizing criteria give you various options for
weighting factors and guarantee a consistently
high quality and error-free delivery.

KiSoft Vision & Open Shuttle
Innovation with a special flavour
KNAPP has set new standards in paperless picking with KiSoft Vision, and is
taking the next evolutionary step for automated guided vehicle systems with its
new development, the Open Shuttle system. This means every picker can achieve
maximum flexibility with consistently high quality. The combination of these two
technologies offers new solutions for the food retail sector.
Packing made easy
KiSoft Visual Case Picking displays visual
information for the pickers; the integrated
camera detects and verifies any barcodes in
the warehouse. In addition, the system takes
over navigation within the facility and guides
the picker to the pick location accurately and
efficiently. This makes picking a very intuitive
process and is practically error-free.
KiSoft Vision in combination with KiSoft
Packmaster creates a pre-calculated load
carrier considering criteria such as article
categories, stability and stacking properties.
The system indicates the exact location for
the item on the target load carrier, the operator
sets down the item and confirms the action.
Making headway
Open Shuttles are free-moving robots used
for transport throughout the warehouse as well
as for supplying work stations. These robots
24 | KNAPP AG
are different from conventional automated
guided vehicle systems as they perform a
detailed analysis of the surroundings and
manoeuvre through the warehouse without
optical or physical aids.
The Open Shuttles react dynamically to
various obstacles and autonomously plan their
routes and alternative routes.
KNAPP offers a fleet management
system to centrally manage and monitor
the Open Shuttles: it optimizes transport
routes, coordinates vehicles and guides
the manoeuvring activities. Open Shuttles
are designed for transporting containers
as well as pallets. They also facilitate the
automatic transport of target load carriers,
accompanying the pickers throughout the
warehouse during their picking activities. This
means that climbing on and off of the vehicle
is no longer necessary and there are no
unproductive transport runs.

Flexible Case Picking
The all-around recipe for your
entire range of articles
To meet the growing demands in terms of order structure flexibility, packaging and
store-friendly delivery, KNAPP is happy to introduce the newest generation of food
retail picking systems, with the optimal degree of automation as a major factor for
success.
Move those fast-movers
Pick-it-Easy Move (image left) is designed
mainly to process fast-movers in the entire
article range of the food retail sector.
Warehouse staff picks the incoming goods
directly from the goods-in pallet to the target
load carrier. Depalletizing, destacking and
storage are no longer necessary, saving time,
space and resources. This ensures that large
quantities are supplied efficiently in store-based
arrangements. Source pallets are supplied
manually from the high-bay racking area
over conventional pallet conveyor systems
or the automated vehicles Open Shuttles.
In this semi-automatic system, KNAPP only
automates those process steps for which
automation really makes sense. The picking
process itself remains entirely flexible for all
of the different types of articles and packaging
due to the manual handling activities.
The picking performance is doubled
compared to conventional methods: the system
can process up to 550 packing units per hour.
30 | KNAPP AG
All you can pick
Depending on the requirements, the Pickit-Easy Tray system handles fast, medium and
slow-moving articles. The system provides the
articles to the work station in trays and a picker
packs the goods onto target load carriers.
The ergonomic design of the work station
significantly reduces any lifting activities. As in
all Pick-it-Easy work stations, there is a special
focus on reducing the physical strain, on userfriendly operation and high flexibility.
KiSoft Packmaster, the pack formation
software guides the staff through order
processing and calculates the ideal load
structure for the load carrier. Different criteria
such as a store-based palletizing arrangement,
stability and division by article groups can be
freely configured according to the customer's
individual requirements.
The station achieves a performance of
more than 600 packing units per hour. The
work station is suited for various load carriers
and is available in different design types.

FAST Picking
The high-quality recipe for fast foods
Fully Automated Standard Tray (FAST) Picking is a modular system concept for
picking standard containers in a fully-automatic and high-performance process.
The OSR ShuttleTM and special palletizing/depalletizing machines are the central hub
of this KNAPP solution.
Easy handling
Especially in the fresh foods segment,
such as fruits, vegetables, sausages, cheese,
milk, baked goods, or meat, the market offers
numerous standard crates and containers
perfectly suited for automation. And it makes
no difference whether these containers are part
of an in-house container pool or are supplied
by reusable container pool providers (such as
IFCO, Europool or Container Centralen). This
segment mainly operates with heavy picking
units. Continuous manual handling of these
units would cause a high level of physical strain
for the workers in the warehouse. In addition,
the system also provides spatial benefits by
significantly reducing the space requirements
compared to manual picking processes on
floor pallet locations.
Efficient preparation
In a special procedure, target pack units
are created directly from the incoming original
pallets and delivered to the branch stores. Any
remaining articles, left over from the procedure
as well as other containers, crates and cartons,
are automatically depalletized and buffered in
32 | KNAPP AG
a fast buffer system – the OSR Shuttle™. The
use of separate trays and the newly developed
washing system makes for a very clean
operation and practically dirt-free handling.
The different types of cartons and containers
are supplied to the high-performance stacking
machines in optimal sequence. The machines
then create store- and order-based roll
containers or pallets. A variety of configurable
palletizing criteria ensure consistent quality
and 100% error-free delivery. Based on shop
orders in planned routes, the automated guided
vehicle system KiSoft Automove supplies the
completed roll containers or pallets to the
dispatch preparation area for loading on the
dispatch vehicles.
Proven ingredients
With its position as market leader in
Shuttle systems, KNAPP offers the ideal
technological solution for demands such
as short-term buffering and fast supply of
items. Our experience from numerous empty
goods projects with automatic detection,
destacking and stacking completes the
circle of our solution expertise in this area.

E-Grocer
The recipe for your new gourmet kitchen
Online food retail is growing rapidly and the E-Grocer system concept was developed
specifically for this segment. KNAPP combines its industry expertise in picking small
quantities with the special demands of the e-commerce sector.
Automated preparation
A large range of goods in several different
temperature areas, single-item picking for
heavy articles, minimum order transit times,
perfect sequence while always observing food
hygiene requirements are only a few key words
that are especially important for e-commerce
in the food retail sector. Cost-optimized
order processing is practically impossible
with traditional picking procedures. The
ideal degree of automation brings maximum
efficiency.
It's all in the mix
The E-Grocer approach includes an
optimized combination of proven technologies.
Overstock is stored in a pallet overstock area.
The goods are put into storage with a forklift
truck or automatically with a stacker crane
system. Fast-moving articles in the warehouse
are picked directly from the pallet to the transport
containers in a manual process for example
using KiSoft Voice, KiSoft Pick-to-Light or the
innovative optical guidance system, KiSoft
Vision Manual picking. This guarantees efficient
storage for a large portion of the delivery volume
as well as reduced depalletizing effort and low
investment costs.
The medium and slow-moving articles in the
item range are stored in the OSR ShuttleTM and
34 | KNAPP AG
processed according to the goods-to-person
principle. At the work station for Pick-it-Easy
Shop (image left) orders are picked under
optimal ergonomic conditions. In addition,
the system supports automatic weight check
processes. Besides the check mechanisms
with light curtains, order picking is based on the
easyUse principle, which ensures that articles
are always placed into the correct shopping
bag of the transport container. Of course
the hygiene requirements are considered
throughout the process. These measures fit in
well in supporting our philosophy of the zero
defect warehouse.
The completed transport containers are
stored in a fully-automatic dispatch buffer:
the OSR ShuttleTM system. For dispatch,
the transport containers are supplied to
the automatic stacking area in the optimal
sequence. The system considers essential
factors such as route departure times and
reverse truck loading.
A maximum treat with minimal effort
E-Grocer reduces the picking times
dramatically. This results in minimal order
transit times and optimized dispatch volumes.
With the perfect combination of manual and
automated processes, this solution offers an
excellent cost-benefit ratio.

KiSoft RMS
For added value with reusables
KNAPP goes full circle for the food retail industry with its subsequent solution for
reusables management. A reusables system for bottles, containers and cases also
ensures that the succeeding processes in the point of sale are highly efficient and
result in minimal effort.
No empty promises
KiSoft RMS also offers an ideal sorting
solution for bottlers and breweries. Particularly
in the beverage industry, it is essential to
always have single-sort empties available for
the refilling process. Fully-automatic pallet
and case handling and the integration of
bottle-sorting robots are all standard system
components. This system can sort the bottles
of 4,000 beverage cases per hour.
Masterpiece
Money-back guarantee
Especially for container pool providers in
food retail, KNAPP offers a fully-automatic
solution for handling and sorting various
types of standard cases and containers. By
maximizing throughput, we achieve minimal
costs per items, dramatically reducing the effort
in process handling. The high-performance
system efficiently sorts up to 12,000 reusable
containers per hour. In combination with
a washing system, the step of cleaning
containers and cases can easily be integrated
in the sorting process.

Purity requirements
An empties sorting system must be able to
handle such basic factors as processing a large
variety of dirty empties under any number of
different ambient conditions and still guarantee
perfect operation. With KiSoft Resuables
Management Solutions (RMS), KNAPP offers
three system solutions tailored to the specific
requirements of empties management, which
each differ in their degree of automation.
Besides providing a prompt and accurate
crediting system for deposit values, KNAPP
ensures transparency throughout the empties
handling processes – from receiving empties
right through to handing them over to the
bottler. The option of selecting the individual
degree of automation for your warehouse
reduces the costs per item and ensures sorting
performance that is perfectly adapted to the
current container supply. Our range of services
spans across an entire spectrum of manual to
fully-automatic case handling.
