A concept that redefines the Audi A3 Sportback. Equipped with the
genes of the original quattro. Enhanced by innovative technology.
A vehicle that also gives visual expression to its performance, e.g.
with its Audi Singleframe with a matt aluminium-look frame and highgloss anthracite grille with diamond styling. This sporty impression is
highlighted by extended front wheel arches made from carbon
fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP), by newly-designed bumpers with large
air intakes at the front and a distinctive diffuser insert at the rear. The
roof edge spoiler, which provides more downforce at the rear, rounds off
the appearance of the RS 3.

A big impression.
The athletic appearance is also continued on the inside. With clear, functional
lines: puristic in black. High-quality materials such as the standard Fine Nappa
leather upholstery and trim are processed with great precision. Sporty elements provide a functional interface between the vehicle and the driver: e.g.
the grippy RS 3 leather-covered multifunction sports steering wheel with shift
paddles, the sports seats or the RS 3 bucket seats for outstanding lateral support, the high-quality pedals in aluminium look and the instrument cluster
with additional RS 3 menu. Here, every detail serves one purpose: to provide a

Audi has a long tradition with five-cylinder engines. Augmented by innovative technologies such as turbocharging with FSI® direct petrol injection, an award-winning
engine was developed from the classic basic principle. Honoured with the “International Engine of the Year Award 2011”*, the 2.5 litre TFSI engine combines scintillating performance, enormous torque and a robust sound. If that’s not enough, you
can press the sports button on the centre console: then the engine responds even
more spontaneously to the accelerator and the exhaust system sounds even more
striking.

S tronic plus
shift paddles.
Pure acceleration.
S tronic means: gearshifting almost without interruption in propulsive power. Fast,
dynamic, efficient. The RS 3 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds. Nevertheless, the 7-speed dual clutch transmission helps reduce fuel consumption with its
high degree of effectiveness and wide ratio spread. Whether in automatic mode, in
manual mode using the shift paddles on the steering wheel or by using the selector
lever: you won’t be short of enthusiasm. Extremely authentic, extremely sporty and
yet extraordinarily efficient.

In order to get the enormous power of the 5-cylinder engine onto the road, we equip the RS 3 as
standard with one of the best all-wheel drive systems in the world: quattro®. The permanent
all-wheel drive ensures a high degree of directional stability, excellent traction and effortless acceleration. Driving force is transferred to the tarmac almost without loss.
In other words: uncompromising dynamism, breathtaking propulsion – on almost every road.

Sports suspension plus

Within its class, the Audi RS 3 is pushing into new dimensions of driving dynamism.
Amongst other things, this is due to the RS 3 sports suspension with special springdamper tuning. It steers precisely and offers phenomenal handling. The necessary grip is
provided by powerful 19-inch aluminium wheels with performance-optimised tyres. The
high performance of the RS 3 is not only due to its engine, but also to its 18-inch brake
system. With 4-piston fixed callipers on the front axle, the brakes bite powerfully.

In just a few seconds you will understand why.
The 2.5 litre TFSI engine in the Audi RS 3 is a
genuine high-performance engine. It generates
250 kW of power from 2,480 cc of displacement
and provides a full 450 Nm of torque in the
1,600–5,300 rpm range. On the one hand, this
ensures effortless power delivery right from the
bottom of the rev range, and on the other, gives
it enormous sprinting capacity up to its rev limit
of 6,800 rpm.
The unusual 5-cylinder design gives the Audi RS 3
an unmistakable sound signature due to its firing
order. It also offers the advantages of compact
measurements and a low weight, which
accommodates the vehicle layout well and
positively influences the axle load distribution.
Naturally, all components of this engine are developed and designed to meet the high standards
required for use in the Audi RS 3. The two Audi
core technologies of turbocharging and direct
petrol injection also ensure that this engine provides high power output, impressive torque and
efficiency. Pneumatically controlled valves set the
air flowing into the cylinder in a rotating motion.
The fuel is injected in exact doses at up to 120 bar
of pressure into this so-called “tumble”. This generates an intensive turbulence, which leads to the
cylinder walls being cooled internally. It is therefore possible to increase the compression ratio of
the engine and in this way improve its efficiency.

circuit with its own water pump. It compresses
the air to a relative boost pressure of up to 1.2
bar. An intercooler is also provided to optimise
effectiveness.
So much for the theory. In practice you can
accelerate in the Audi RS 3 from 0–100 km/h in
just 4.6 seconds – right up to an electronically
regulated top speed of 250 km/h.

What is the benefit of two clutches?
A double saving: time and energy.
The 7-speed dual clutch transmission enables
quick shifts with practically no break in propulsive power; it is also particularly efficient.
The 7-speed S tronic comprises two multi-plate
clutches and two gearboxes. Both parts of the
transmission are permanently active, although
there is only ever one actually connected to the
engine. For example, when the driver
accelerates in third gear, the second part of the
transmission is already set in fourth gear. The
gear change works by switching the clutches –
one opens and the other closes. The gear change
takes place in a few hundredths of a second. So
quickly and fluently that you will hardly notice it.
It does not matter whether the driver chooses
the fully automatic mode with programmes
D (Drive) or S (Sport) or changes gear manually
with the shift paddles on the steering wheel or
by using the selector lever – the gear change
feels precise and extremely sporty. But even with
all this dynamic performance, the S tronic still
remains extremely efficient. High efficiency
reduces both fuel consumption and emissions.
Furthermore, the 7th gear is designed as an overdrive with a longer transmission.

With quattro®, we have invented one of the best
all-wheel drive systems in the world.
Try it for yourself: in the Audi RS 3.
Those who know Audi know quattro®. And anybody who has driven with the permanent allwheel drive system from Audi never wants to
drive any other way. Why? Because this drive system transfers the engine’s power to the road in
such an impressive way. That’s why the RS 3 is
equipped with quattro as standard.
RS 3, this is achieved using the newest generation of electronically-controlled and hydraulically-operated Haldex multi-plate clutch, which
allows any distribution of drive torque between
the front and rear axles. The rapid response and
very fast reaction times of this generation of
quattro are particularly convincing.
If the wheels on one axle are at risk of spinning,
the power is transferred to the other axle. In the

18-inch high-performance brake system
The brake discs on the front axle have a
diameter of 370 mm. The brake callipers
are painted in high-gloss black.
With regard to the suspension, the RS 3 benefits
from the excellent qualities exhibited by the basic
Audi S3 design. The front wheel mount is a
McPherson design with lower wishbones. The
subframe, swivel bearings and the suspension
arms are all made from aluminium. The subframe
is bolted to the chassis at six points to increase
rigidity. The electromechanical rack and pinion
steering works with variable power assistance. The
dynamic character of the RS 3 is highlighted by its
modified characteristic curves. The 4-link rear
axle can brace longitudinal and transverse forces
separately, thanks to its elaborate design. The
trailing arms absorb the driving and braking
forces. The relatively soft configuration of their
bearings improves ride comfort, whereas the
three suspension arms of each wheel are firmly
secured to the axle support, thereby improving
driving dynamics. The separately positioned coil
springs and the newly developed dampers absorb
the vertical forces. The characteristic curves of
the spring-damper combinations as well as the
adapted elastokinematics have been specially
designed and extensively tested for the RS 3.
The standard 18-inch high-performance brake
system bites firmly on the front axle with its
4-piston fixed callipers. The front brake discs
consist of a cast friction ring that is connected to
the aluminium brake disc chamber with steel
pins. This so-called floating bearing ensures
that the friction ring remains largely tension
free, which improves stability at extreme temperatures. The axial perforation of the discs and a
cooling channel for interior ventilation increase
the performance of the brake discs even further.
The use of aluminium not only reduces the weight
of the brake discs but also improves the weight
balance of the unsprung masses.
