Bank of America Offers
Student Leadership Program

SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG)
- Starting Nov. 2nd, Bank of
America will be accepting
applications for their Student
Leaders Program, part of the
bank’s ongoing commitment to
preparing young people for a
brighter future.
Today, teens often struggle to find the opportunity to
gain learning experiences that
equip them for future education and employment. Early
job opportunities are critical
in preparing young people for
today’s competitive workforce
which is why Bank of America
is invested in initiatives that
connect young people to the
workforce and education
opportunities that they need to
build stronger financial lives.
Every year, through the
Student Leaders program,
Bank of America helps connect community-minded high
school juniors and seniors to
employment, skills development, and service. The students
are awarded paid internships
with local nonprofits, including the SF AIDS Foundation,
Boys and Girls Club, and
Habitat for Humanity. In
addition to the paid summer
internships, Student Leaders
will participate in the 2016
Student Leadership Summit
in Washington D.C. from July
10th through the 15th.
Student Leaders not only
learn valuable workforce skills,
they also gain an in-depth
understanding of some of the
issues impacting our local
community and our country.
If you are interested in learning more about the Student
Leaders program take a look
at Bank of America’s website, and listen to first-hand
accounts from young leaders
who have participated in the
program in the past.
Bank of America is accepting applications from Nov.
2nd, 2015 through Jan. 29th,
2016.

Commemoration
Planned at Earl J.
Koobs Nature Area
- A
CaRmiChael, Ca. (mPg)
memorial service will be held in
the Earl J. Koobs Nature Area
located in Carmichael, between
San Juan Central (previously
Garfield Elementary) and the
La Sierra Community Center on
5325 Engle Road. Gates to the
area will be open from 10:00
a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Color
Guard Ceremony will be at 11:00
a.m. The Color Guard will be by
local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts
and Venture Crew.
The Earl J. Koobs Nature
Area started with a teacher’s
off-hand suggestion in 1971
and local high school students’
perservance in purchasing 4-1/2
acres in Carmichael as a nature
and environmental studies area.
Even then-Governor Reagan
and President Nixon donated to
the students’ cause. A California
ecology grant helped pay the balance. The area was later named
for Mr. Koobs, now called
“Ranger Jack”, the biology
teacher who planted the idea.
The Vietnam Memorial is
especially intriguing. In 1973,
while many were still in disbelief of America’s losses, the
nature area’s symbol became a
memorial to 14 students from La

in November that brought together hundreds of packers and other participants from
Sacramento and South Placer counties, fill
CARE packages with a taste of home for men
and women serving in combat overseas.
The 400 Christmas CARE packages prepared at the Roseville Veterans Memorial
Hall included essential personal hygiene
items along with little added “hugs” like a
warm scarf, a good book, and popular snacks
and candies. Each box also included a greeting from the Sacramento Blue Star Moms
and a personal message written by grateful
men, women, and children here at home.
The day was a family affair. Children
and parents waited together in line to fill

And speaking of fun, try reading stories to small children. Whether at a pediatric unit of a hospital or at a public
library in your community, it is guaranteed that you’ll love it!
Commentary
by C. P. McCauley
Everyone seems to be rushing,
so many things to do. Will it all
be ready in time?
After having experienced
many Christmas seasons, I
sometimes wonder if we have
lost the true spirit of the season with the seemingly constant
shuffle of shopping, cooking, gift wrapping, and on and
on. Friends, neighbors, family
members, and complete strangers are making an effort to be
nice. That is a good thing, of
course, but shouldn’t we try to
be nice all year long?
Perhaps if we keep busy, it
will make it easier not to think
of “the stuff” that requires
real effort and for a longer
time. Here come some suggestions that could apply to all of
us. And, yes, I am including
myself.
Forget about dieting. Instead,
take food to a homeless shelter.
Want to go shopping? OK.
The Salvation Army could use
some new clothes, like the ones
you are about to discard.
On your way to the beauty
salon for your stylish haircut,
get some toiletries and simple beauty supplies for the
abused Women’s Center in your
community.
Going to lunch with a friend?
Include someone from the skill
senior facility near you. Or, better yet, bring treats to the center
and share them with some of
the senior residents who seldom
have company from the outside.
How about a visit to a hospital? Oh, that might be
depressing, you tell yourself.
Try it once. You could be giving
someone a nice break.
Let our veterans know you
appreciate their sacrifice and listen to their war stories. We owe
them so much. Plus, it could be
fun!
And speaking of fun, try reading stories to small children.
Whether at a pediatric unit of
a hospital or at a public library
in your community, it is guaranteed that you’ll love it!
If you qualify, have you
looked into being a foster parent, or a big sister or brother to a
not-so-small kid?
Take the time to listen to
someone. Really listen. It is a
wonder that the most joyous
season of the year is also the
time when most suicides take
place, especially among young
adults. It is also the time when
depression tends to increase.
Just thinking of all the loved
ones that are no longer with us
will make us nostalgic. Talking
with someone may make it
easier.
So, if you are looking to make
some New Year’s resolutions
and be nice all year long, read
this again. And, Season greetings, happy holidays and merry
Christmas! H

Bell Ringers
The ancient art of
bell-ringing was part of
Christmas celebrations at
Carmichael Presbyterian
Church. Carol Honnold
(rear) rang a chime over
fellow musicians Jan
Sullivan, Jimmi Mishler,
and Linda Hatch. The
ladies are part of a
14-piece ensemble called
Mission Bells. The church’s
“Christmas Joy” service
presented two bell-ringing
teams, youth and adult
choirs and instrumental
solos.

Pastor Mike and the Gospel of Jazz
Musician Leads Sacramento Calvary Flock
Story and photos
by Susan Maxwell Skinner
SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG)
- A gift for music comforted Mike
Butera’s hazardous childhood: when
his musical career turned dangerous,
the gift of faith was his salvation.
Butera is a household name in
Californian jazz. Barely out of his
teens, the saxophonist toured with
Harry James and was featured in
recordings with superstars. He is
now an ordained pastor at Calvary
Chapel in East Sacramento. His
flock ranges from professionals to
paupers. For many of them, the road
to Calvary has been rugged. No less
so for gravel-voiced Pastor Mike.
“Don’t call me reverend,” says
the 62-year-old. “I don’t need to be
revered; I’m just a sinner who was
saved by grace.” One of few ministering “jazzers” of his acquaintance,
Butera still plays professionally. “I
know an upright bass player who’s a
pastor,” he considers. “There aren’t
too many of us.
“To me, jazz is a perfect vehicle for my faith. It’s like jazz
God’s vastness. It’s universal and
it encompasses all kinds of music.
No one will ever get to the end of
it. You have infinite expression but
there are principles. Like walking
with God, once you apply rules, you
have freedom and fun.” Butero’s
Dec. 20th service will illustrate
his theory. The pastor will present original jazz interpretations of
Biblical Psalms during pre-Christmas worship.
The virtuoso’s youth was discordant. “I had a rough, rebellious
childhood; my solace was being
gifted at music,” he said. “I turned
pro at 15. I joined a rock band that
was heavily into drugs and alcohol.”
Still at McClatchy High School,
he embraced the music culture at
its most destructive. “Most days
began with a bottle of wine and pills
before classes,” he said. “It was the
only way I could talk to girls.”
At college, with a music scholarship, he gigged at jazz bars. His
Butera’s big band in concert at River City Calvary Chapel. Vocalist is Sacramento jazz diva Vivien Lee.
first pro-recording was with Dave
Kahne (now producer for Paul
McCartney and Tony Bennett).
Butera toured with the likes of John
Denver, Donna Summer, and Lou
Rawls. “The culture included alcohol and pot smoking,” he recalled.
“Every night, it was back to some
guy’s room to drink and get high.
I nearly died one night: I found
myself on the floor with a drug frenzied guy’s gun to my neck. After
that, I began to search for wholeness. I believed there was a ‘God’
but I didn’t know who he was.”
Big band legend Harry James
discovered the prodigal prodigy.
At 22, Butera became the youngest
player in James’ stellar ensemble.
“After a few years touring as a hot
shot in the best band (with associated booze and excess) my life
seemed empty,” he said. “I was
married and raising my wife Julie’s
two children as my own but we
were fighting like cats and dogs.
Success didn’t fill what was missing in me. I wondered if God would
tell me what to do.
“I took a Gideon Bible from
a New York hotel and sneaked
looks on the tour bus. I was skeptical. For five months, I searched
its pages. I found more than 300
prophecies that were fulfilled by the
birth, life, death and resurrection
of Jesus. That was enough to show
me the words were from God.”
Hal Lindsey’s bestseller “The late,
Great Planet Earth” sealed Butera’s
faith.
“I learned God loved me right
where I was at,” he explained.
“With all my faults and failures,
heaven was given to me. I got on
my knees and received Jesus. I
woke up next day and felt different. I guess I was born again. I left
Harry James and came home. I quit
drinking. My wife and I began to
learn what marriage was all about.”
Butera joined Sacramento’s
Moon recording studio as producer/arranger. “One day I hired a
Christian background singer who
told me to go to church,” he said.
“But my experiences of church
seemed so phony; what I felt was
so real. She introduced me to
Calvary Chapel in Oak Park. I was
embraced the door by a tattooed
guy, just out of prison. There were
25 people in the funky little church.
They gave us blankets for the cold.
The Pastor, John Cowan, was in
Levis. He read from the Bible and
explained it, simply. I knew I was
home. My wife and children loved
it.”
Though the church hosted a
band, Butera stayed in the pews.
“I needed to learn,” he explained.
“Worship is not a performance, its
participation. The audience is God.
I served by setting up the PA and
cleaning restrooms. On gigs I kept
my Bible on my music stand. One
night at the top of the Holiday Inn,
a guy talked to me. He knew I was
expressing love of God through
music. He asked if he could receive
Jesus. Later I learned he’d intended
to commit suicide that night. I was
experiencing ministry.”
Muso buddies dubbed him: “The
Preacher.”
“I have a big burden for musicians,” he confided. “They are
family and to me, some are lost.
Many artists can’t accept traditional
belief. Some feel Christians are stupid automatons. I have to live with
that. It’s taken years of consistency
to show I’m for real.”
At a 1980 concert in Land Park,
“The Preacher” met Pastor Leo
Govinetti. “He was on boogie woogie piano, singing Christian lyrics,”
said Butera. “I sat in with my horn
and we smoked. We began 23
years of musical evangelism, calling ourselves The Agape [God’s
love] Brothers. We were on T.V. We
played all over USA. We worked
for free or for whatever anyone
could pay.”
Govinetti was pastor at Gridley’s
Calvary Chapel. At the time Calvary
Chapels—which began as 1970s
ministries for hippies and surfers—
were a new Christian movement.
There are now 2000 congregations in the world. Govinetti beheld
believers meeting for Bible study at
Butera’s house and decreed: “Mike,
you were meant to be a pastor.”
Novice Butera studied five years
under Calvary founder Pastor
Chuck Smith. Ordained in 1990,
the new pastor gathered his flock
in a Land Park bowling alley. Now
almost 200 strong, they occupy
Folsom Boulevard digs. Church
outreach includes Ugandan and
Rwandan orphanages; water purification for Columbian natives; and
aid for the local homeless. “I’ve followed the road of hard knocks,”
their leader summarized. “You
learn by experience, and from just
lovin’ on people.” Jazz is never far
from his altar. The church hosted
monthly big band concerts in 2015
and will continue with 2016 jazz
events.
“I feel an inward energy when I
pick up the horn,” explains Pastor
Mike. “I am worshipping with all
my heart; trying to express every
phrase perfectly because God is
hearing. I’m giving back what I
have received: love.”

Walk In the New Year With The Sticks
SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG)
- The Sacramento Walking Sticks
will be hosting newly designed
walks on New Year’s Eve and
New Year’s Day for everyone to
join in on. Both walks will start
from the Pioneer Congregational
Church Social Hall, 2700 L Street,
Sacramento (directly across from
Sutter’s Fort). Registration for the
New Year’s Eve walk, Dec. 31st,
is between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
and the New Year’s Day walk, Jan.
1st, is between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00
noon. There will be a different 5K
(3.1 miles) and 10K (6.2 miles)
route available on both days. All
the walks are on city streets around
the downtown Sacramento area.
Flashlights are recommended on
the New Year’s Eve walk. Dogs are
welcome on all the walks but they
are not allowed inside the Pioneer
Congregational Church; strollers,
and wheelchairs will be able to traverse all routes. Rain will not stop
these events from taking place.
Volkswalking is a family sport
and parents and grandparents are
encouraged to bring their children
and grandchildren out and get them
walking. These events are a wonderful way to see the old year out
and see the new one in. This makes
for a great New Year’s resolution;
to get fit, meet new people and see
sights in your home town and surrounding areas that you’ve never
seen before.
The New Year’s Eve route will
take people thru lively midtown
Sacramento to the wonderful holiday light displays in the Fab 40s.
The walks are non-competitive
and not timed so people can stop
along the way to enjoy the sights
and sounds—so long as they return
for check-in by 9:00 p.m. at the
Pioneer Congregational Church.
The New Year’s Day route will
go through classical Sacramento
residential neighborhoods, including Boulevard Park and Mansion
Flats. You’ll pass by two of the
notorious Dorothea Puente’s houses
on both the 4 and 10K walks. The
10K will wind through other historic neighborhoods, chosen for
their architectural and historic
interest. Everyone must be checked
in by 3:00 pm. Each participant
will receive a set of written directions with a map for the route they
will be walking and typically the
route will also be marked. The New
Year’s Day route will have an extra
sheet of Historical and Interesting
Facts sheet that will give the reader’s an historical/architectural tour
of the neighborhoods they’ll be
walking in.
The walks are open and available to everyone. They are free
and there is also an incentive program provided that allows people
the opportunity to track their mileage. This incentive program can
be started by purchasing a New
Walker Packet for $5.00. There is
also a limited edition commemorative patch available for $4.00 each.
Volkssporting (translation means
sport of the people) originated
in Germany in the 1970s. Many
U.S. military families stationed
there enjoyed the sport and eventually brought it to America; there
are currently just less than 300
clubs nationwide. The Sacramento
Walking Sticks Club continues
to be the largest club in the entire
U.S.A. with close to 600 members and it offers everyone a wide
array of walking and bicycling
adventures for people of all ages,
including their dogs.
People love to go exploring in
their hometown as well as in their
state but they tend to be more
receptive to doing it with others.
Volkssporting is a great connector
of town festivals and activities with
people who would never have ventured there on their own. There’s
safety in numbers whether by day
or night and meeting new friends
along the way is another side benefit. After the walks we like to dine
at local eateries wherever we’re at
so there’s also another social layer
to volkswalking.
The Sacramento Walking Sticks
Club offer group walks on Tuesday
and Thursday mornings (5 and 10K
routes to choose from) as well as
Wednesday night group walks that
are always 5K. There are also group
bike rides of 25K offered every
other Thursday morning throughout
the year. Check out our website’s
(www.SacramentoWalkingSticks.
org) Calendar of Events link for
all the details or you can sign up
to receive weekly walk alerts by
e-mail.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19)
Although taking advice isn’t
always easy for the headstrong
Sheep, you might want to
consider what someone you
respect says about an upcoming decision.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20)
A new offer is tempting, but
don’t be bullied into a quick
decision. Rely on your keen
Bovine business sense to alert
you to anything that might be
questionable.
GEMINI (May 21 to June
20) Your Gemini Twin nature
rallies to help you deal with
this week’s hectic schedules,
both in your personal and
professional lives. One caution:
Watch your diet.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22)
Avoid rushing to make up for
time lost on a stalled workplace
operation. Best to set up a
schedule and pace yourself.
Welcome the help of colleagues.
LEO (July 23 to August 22)
Despite those glittering holiday
distractions you love so well,
be sure to keep your feline
senses set on high to alert you
to anything that might require
fast action.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Making an effort to
restore fraying relationships
proves to be more successful than you dared hope. The
holidays also bring new friends
into your life.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Private and professional
matters compete for your attention. Be honest in your assessment of which should get more
of it, and for how long.
SCORPIO (October 23 to
November 21) A seemingly
endless list of must-do tasks is
best handled by tackling them
one by one, and taking energyrestoring timeouts between
each job.
SAGITTARIUS (November
22 to December 21) A vexing
relationship seems destined
to deteriorate no matter what
each side tries to do. A third
party’s advice just might prove
helpful.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to
January 19) Reach out to ease
any tensions caused by home
or workplace pressures before
they threaten the relationshipbuilding progress you’ve made.

“Sicario” (R) - The drug wars
along the U.S.-Mexico border
are a hazy, morally ambiguous
nightmare where doing The
Right Thing is never what it
appears. Emily Blunt stars
as FBI Agent Kate Marcy, an
upright investigator who sees
first-hand some of the worst
carnage wrought by the ruthless
drug cartels. She’s called into
a secretive assignment by a
swaggering operative from
another agency (Josh Brolin),
and tossed into the heart of
darkness along with a shady
“adviser” claiming to be a
former Colombian prosecutor
(Benicio Del Toro).
It’s memorable and unsettling,
which is good. Director Dennis
Villanueve packs such tension
into every frame, all of it tied to
the twisting maze the audience
follows
through
Blunt’s
performance. It’s thrilling and
intense, but not exactly a joy
ride of go-get-’em cops vs.
crooks.
“The Walk” (PG) - Back in the
‘70s, when many New Yorkers
were still bemoaning how the
two “giant file cabinets” of the
Twin Towers were ruining the
distinctive skyline, a mercurial
Frenchman saw the WTC and
dreamed a big dream. Philippe
Petit (Joseph Gordon-Levitt)
had a circus-y background in
Europe, but put on his biggest
show in New York when he
walked a tight-rope between
the iconic skyscrapers. The
movie quickly covers Petit’s
background, before getting to
the planning and execution of
the walk.
At first, you may think, “Guy

whole movie?” Well, the whole
thing was quite illegal and
required heist-style planning
and infiltration to accomplish,
complete with a ragtag band
of specialists and amateurs.
The movie really does pick up
right around the central stunt,
as Robert Zemeckis knows how
to stretch and get every ounce
of wonder out of a pivotal
moment.
“Scout’s Guide to the Zombie
Apocalypse” (R) - Three
teenage boys are unprepared
when they have to come of
age and save their skins due
to a zombie outbreak hitting
their small California town.
While on a camping trip, Ben
and Carter (Tye Sheridan
and Logan Miller) decide to
finally ditch the Scouts -- and
their dorky friend Augie (Joey
Morgan) -- so they can go to a
party and try to be like the other
teens. Too bad everybody’s
turned into zombies when they
get back to town, and they have
to horror-comedy their way to
safety with help from a waitress
from the local strip club (Sarah
Dumont). It doesn’t do much to
revitalize the overdone zombiecomedy field, but it tries.
“Infinitely Polar Bear” (R)
- Cameron (Mark Ruffalo)
has the bursts of irrepressible
optimism and energy that make
him an amazing friend and
father. What usually follows,
however, is a terrible crash
of depression and confusion.
Writer-director Maya Forbes
made the film with pieces of
her own childhood, growing
up with a father who dealt
with bipolar disorder. After
a serious breakdown puts
Cameron in a mental hospital,
his wife Maggie (Zoe Saldana)
struggles to raise their two
daughters on her own. When
Maggie makes the decision to
go to grad school so she can
provide a better life, Cameron
has to step up as a full-time
father and pillar of stability
for his girls. It’s a complicated
and compassionate look at how
mental illness, love and family
interact.

ESTATE NO. 34-2015-00184955
To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, and
contingent creditors of and persons who
may be otherwise interested in the will or

A petition has been filed by Lisa Lopez in the
Superior Court of California, County of Sacramento,
requesting that Lisa Lopez be appointed as
administrator to administer the estate of the decedent.
The petition requests the decedent’s will and codicils,
if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils
are available for examination in the file kept by the court.
The petition requests authority to administer the estate
under the Independent Administration of Estates Act.
(This authority will allow the executor to take many
actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking
certain very important actions, however, the executor
will be required to give notice to interested persons
unless they have waived notice or have consented to
the proposed action.) The independent administration
authority will be granted unless an interested person
files an objection to the petition and shows good
cause why the court should not grant the authority.

should appear at the hearing and state your objections
or file written objections with the court before the hearing.
Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney.
IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor
of the deceased, you must file your claim with the
court and mail a copy to the personal representative
appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four

from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of
a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate
Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may
affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult
with an attorney knowledgeable in California law.
YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you
are interested in the estate, you may file with the court
a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing
of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of
any petition or account as provided in Probate Code
section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is

Blue Star Moms are proud
mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, foster mothers, and female
legal guardians living in South

county who have children serving
in the military, guard, or reserves
or have children who are veterans.
Members and friends also volunteer at VA hospitals and help out
at other veteran outreach programs including Stand Down,
Wounded Warriors, and Homes
for our Troops. They also work
with veteran organizations such as
Veterans of Foreign Wars and the
American Legion.
Throughout the year, Blue Star
Moms collect items and fundraise to pay for postage to mail the
CARE packages. Postage is about
$13.80 for each box.
Packing parties in 2016 are
scheduled for Feb. 27th, June 18th,
and Nov. 19th at the Roseville
Veterans Memorial Hall at 110

The Sacramento Blue Star
Moms depend solely on donations to complete their mission.
There are no paid positions; participants are all volunteers. You
can help them support our military by donating items for CARE
packages, making a tax-deductible
financial donation, attending their

Saving the planet has never been so
easy.
The Paris climate talks concluded in
a rousing round of self-congratulation
over an agreement that, we are told,
is the first step toward keeping Earth
habitable. If generating headlines
and press releases about making
history were the metric for anything,
Paris might be as consequential -- if
misbegotten -- as advertised.
The fact is that Paris is very meta.
The agreement is about the agreement,
never mind what’s in it or what its true
legal force is -- namely, nil. Paris is a
legally binding agreement not to have
legally binding limits on emissions. It
might be the most worthless piece of
paper since the Kellogg-Briand Pact
outlawed war -- about a decade prior
to the outbreak of World War II.
The Paris summit operated on the
principle
of
CBDRILONCWRC,
President Barack Obama praised 180
countries for coming to Paris “with
serious climate targets in hand.” This
was ridiculous climate grade inflation.
As Oren Cass of the Manhattan
Institute points out, Pakistan produced
a one-page document promising to
“reduce its emissions after reaching
peak levels to the extent possible.” For
this we needed a headline-grabbing
global confab?
No one will mistake Pakistan for
an industrial juggernaut. How about
China, the world’s largest carbon
emitter? It promises to reach peak
emissions around 2030, when one
U.S. government study estimates that
it would hit peak admissions anyway,
Cass notes. The more China promises
to confront climate change, the more it
stays the same.
The agreement’s celebrants believe
that by making countries report their
progress on cutting carbon emissions
and by sending a stern signal against
fossil fuels, Paris will catalyze painful
cuts in carbon emissions somewhere
off in the future. It speaks to a naive
belief in the power of global shame
over the sheer economic interest of
developing countries in getting rich
(and lifting countless millions out of
poverty) through exploiting cheap
energy -- you know, the way Western
countries have done for a couple of
centuries.
If this is the best hope of the climate
alarmists, their global campaign
will be a welcome fizzle. All things
considered, it probably is best that
they occupy themselves with grand
meetings and with the exertions
attendant to believing their own PR.
Otherwise they could do real damage.

Review.

it is, and we will pretend to take it

and Earth is saved from looming

India’s assurance that it will make a
roughly 30 percent improvement in
carbon intensity is, according to Cass,
also about where it was projected to
be headed anyway. India still wants
to double its output of coal by 2020.
As The Guardian put it, India “says
coal provides the cheapest energy for
rapid industrialization that would lift
millions out of poverty.” India would
be correct.

means that the house training is effective, but you may be
waiting much too long to take
him out. When he has to go, he
will go. That includes soiling his
crate, which is an absolute last
resort for a dog.
Follow this guideline, published
by the American Kennel Club,
called the “month-plus-one”
rule: Take your puppy’s age
in months, and add one. That
gives you a rough estimate of
the maximum number of hours
Jake should wait before going
outside to pee or poop.
For example, if Jake is four
months old, add one to that
number. The total, five, means
he should be taken outside every five hours. Every puppy is
different, so Jake may need to
go out a little sooner. And yes,
that means he may need to go
out in the middle of the night, or
on a pee pad.
He should always be taken out
just before bedtime and first
thing in the morning, regardless
of his age.

Mabel Adams was sitting in
the day room at the Rest of Your
Life retirement home when the
children came in. She smiled and
so did all the others in the room
except for two who didn’t know
what was going on.
The old-timers in the home
knew the kids were coming
and had put up Christmas decorations in the day room and
on the doors of their own small
apartments and on themselves.
Mabel had been reminded several times by that staff that
morning that the kids were coming over, this being necessary as
Mabel’s memory isn’t what it
used to be. And she put a sprig
of imitation holly in her hair and
tied a red ribbon on the other
side.
The little girl smiled and
walked over to Mabel.
“Are you a grandma?” she
asked.
“Why, yes dear, I am.”
“I brought you a present,
Grandma,” she said, handing a
box to Mabel. Mabel opened it
and was delighted at the sandalwood-scented hankies inside.
“Why thank you so much,
Honey!” she said. “And what is
your name?”
“I’m Candice. I’m four.”

“Well, Candice, merry
Christmas to you. Have you
been here before?”
“Well … no, I guess. Mom
said this is where the grandmas
are and we can have fun bringing
presents to the grandmas.”
“I see,” Mabel said. “Well,
Candice, come over here, dear

There!”
Sometimes, it isn’t the cost

just a child’s smile and a small

The Christmasfication of Our Home
Dr. James L. Snyder
Our home, like every other
home this time of year, bears
the decorations of the Christmas
season. This is all thanks to
the Gracious Mistress of the
Parsonage. My assigned role in
the whole Christmas affair was to
keep out of her way. And, out of
her way, I kept.
Consequently, our house is full
of the glitter and tinsel of the season with Christmas music playing
in the background. In the very center of all of this holiday collage,
sits our Christmas tree begging
for Christmas gifts. Every once in
a while I catch it casting a wishful
look in my direction. I pretend not
to notice. After all, I’m not Santa
Claus.
One afternoon I was in the
house by myself and had a strange
feeling something was missing.
Walking around and looking at all
the unique decorations I just could
not put my finger on it, but something was absent. I know what a
thorough job my wife does with
this sort of thing, and so I was not
about to approach her with my
query.
The more I pondered this, the
more perplexing it became. Then it
hit me. There definitely was something missing in our Christmas
ornamentation. The answer came
to me when I was rehearsing in
my mind the old poem, “’Twas the
Night Before Christmas.”
Somewhere in the beginning of
that poem are these words, “The
stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St.
Nicholas soon would be there;” I
quickly looked around and discovered no stockings were hung by the
chimney with care.
The first problem I faced was,
we had no chimney. I assure you,
this was not a major setback with
me in my quest. Once I set my
mind to something, I will not stop
until it is finished.
Not far from the Christmas
tree was a shelf upon which were
arranged various Christmas knickknacks and decorations. This, in
my opinion, would be a wonderful place to hang our Christmas
stockings.
One other problem I had; I could
not find any Christmas stockings.
This would not in any way hinder my progress. I love a challenge
and do my best when the odds are
stacked against me.
Looking for something to
improvise, which is something my
wife is quite famous for, I happened to notice I was wearing
socks. Voilà. Without a moments
hesitation I took off my shoes,
pulled off my socks and hung
them on the bookshelf with care in
hopes that the Gracious Mistress of
the Parsonage would notice them
there.
We may not have a glowing
fireplace in our living room, but
a warm, glowing feeling of satisfaction was stirring up inside me. I
love Christmas.
I almost forgot the situation
when a few hours later my wife
came home from her Christmas
shopping. I was in my easy chair
reading Charles Dickens’ “A
Christmas Carol.” I always read
this book this time of the year.
Sure, I enjoy the movie adaptations, but nothing is like getting
back to the real thing. A Christmas
without reading “A Christmas
Carol,” is no Christmas in my
thinking.
I was engaged with Ebenezer
Scrooges’ “Humbug,” when I
heard a cry of alarm coming from
our living room. “What in the
world stinks in here?”
This shows very plainly the difference between men and women.
Women are always finding things
that stink. My wife’s nose is
so delicate she can differentiate between a thousand different
smells and identify the source to
each and every one.
I think she has some kind of
smell-phobia, which has, as far as
I know, no cure. And believe me, I
have looked. Living with someone
allergic to stink is a real hardship.
“Did something in this house die
while I was away?”
I did fall asleep and was dead
to the world for about 25 minutes.
I rather doubt this was the cause
of the snoot full of stink she was
currently experiencing. Being the
dutiful husband I am, I immediately ran to her rescue.
“Something in this house stinks
awfully bad.”
I just looked at her not knowing what to do or say at the time.
Then her attention was drawn
to the stockings hung with care.
“What in the world are these?” she
demanded.
With a St. Francis of Assisi
smile on my face, I explained to
her what I had done while she was
away.
“Take those filthy socks outside
and burn them.” Then, much to
my consternation, and despite the
coolness of the outside weather,
all the windows and doors were
opened for three days to get what
she called “the stink,” out of our
house. Her fumigation was not
in complete harmony with what I
considered the holiday spirit.
Even my malodorous socks
cannot diminish what Christmas
is all about. After burning my
socks I turned to the promise in
the Old Testament, “Therefore
the Lord himself shall give you a
sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall
call his name Immanuel.” (Isaiah
7:14 KJV). All the way to the
New Testament and the fulfillment
of that promise. “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall
bring forth a son, and they shall
call his name Emmanuel, which
being interpreted is, God with us.”
(Matthew 1:23 KJV).
Jesus is the Christmasfication
of every home. Apart from him,
Christmas is just an empty holiday.
