Is That Good News?
Since the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) issued its stop PSA
testing recommendations there has been a measurable drop in the number of PSA screens
performed annually with some estimates as high as 40-50% fewer.
Why did the USPSTF come out against this seemingly useful measurement? They said
the risks were too high: testing led to overtreatment, resulting in serious side effects and
morbidity in all current prostate cancer treatment modalities.
Seems like a good move? Yes, unless you are one of the unlucky guys that has aggressive
prostate cancer. Not catching the cancer early could be painful and deadly. And if you are an
otherwise healthy man older than 75 with the aggressive variety – that may be particularly
unlucky as the PSA test is no longer recommended after 75, even though your expected
life span has been extended to 84.

“Knowledge is the antidote to fear,” is an Emerson quote
David Most,Ph.D.,executivedirectorofthenonprofitHealth
Information Research Inc., is fond of noting. He knows only
too well – as a prostate cancer survivor, a frequent speaker at
Prostate Support Groups throughout the region, and counsel
to men seeking solutions to their health dilemma, he’s been in
the trenches for nearly two decades helping men understand
their diagnoses and treatment options.
While today’s physicians have less time to educate their
patients, being an informed patient is more important than
ever due to the many options available and the speed at which
technology and practices change. That’s why Dr. Most also
produces the annual W. B. Ingalls Memorial Prostate Health
and Cancer Seminar. An independent event that features the
nation’s leading prostate health physicians and researchers,
the Ingalls seminar is designed to explore the most pressing
issuesinthefield.Thisyear’sfocus:The Prostate Cancer
Dilemma: Tiger or Pussycat?
On March 8, seven highly acclaimed medical doctors hailing
from prestigious institutions from California to Massachusetts to
Washington, DC/Maryland to Florida will offer their cutting-edge
solutions and research to the complex problems surrounding
testing and tumor aggressiveness. The seminar, which typically
attracts over 200 participants, is held at the Scripps Research
Institute in Jupiter, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Physicians who attend will
be eligible for four continuing medical education credits as the
program has been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
The principal sponsor of the Seventh Annual W.B. Ingalls
Memorial Prostate Health and Cancer Seminar is the W.
Bradford Ingalls Foundation; co-sponsor is ICARE, the
International Cancer Alliance for Research and Education.
The seminar will begin with registration and continental
breakfast at 8 a.m. followed by presentations at 9 a.m. and
wrap-up at 2:30 p.m. Tuition is $50 per person/$75 per couple
and includes a coffee break and box lunch. Participants can visit
staffed information booths during breakfast and break times.

How Can I Get A Cottage

Home?
Q. I am renovating my
home in the Stuart area and need suggestions for colors of
the sea to bring into my home and would like it to follow
the theme up my staircase. I like dark blues and sandy
beiges. I need the fabrics to be low maintenance. We’ll have

Jennifer K., Sewells Point
A. Start by creating a charming backdrop. Off-white
wainscoting with traditional bead board can be purchased
by the panel and is easy to install. You can use a simple
chair rail to top it off, and if you have pictures you would
like to display, think about choosing a chair rail with a width
of at least 2-inches so you can lean a series of pictures on
the rail of seascapes and shells in a dedicated area of the

How Do I Start My Design

Q. I am going to be

start?
Mary T., Palm City
A. Moving into a new
home is very exciting and
for those who are not sure
what they want, it is best to
hire a professional who can
“hold your hand” so that
you are not making costly
mistakes. Most start with
paint selections and unless

Window Treatments ... Should I, Shouldn’t I ?
Q. We have ugly vertical blinds in our home and I am
not sure how to replace for an updated look?
Frank and Jackie T., Hobe Sound
A. Vertical blinds have come a long way, and they
do serve a purpose as well as being cost effective – There
are many different options, however, to get privacy and
room darkening. We offer soft window treatments (fabric),
sliding panels, plantation shutters and shades… We would
be happy to have you come in for a consultation to see what
your options are.

“Meet Your Local Cupid” Month!
By Kelly Leary , M.S.,
Co-Founder of
Precision Dating
Did you know Cupid
was a woman? Many of
our happy couples know
this fact well. This month
for Valentine’s Day, I have
to say how delighted I am
to be part of a club that is
devoted to helping others
findLOVEandfriendship.
As the Beatles sang, Love is All You Need. I feel blessed
to share some valuable truths about dating that will kick
off your month with hope. Whether you meet through our
private one on one set ups or at one of our events, I wish
you everlasting love and romance this coming month and
year!! The world is your oyster!
1. No matter what your age, there are incredible
individuals who are seeking someone just like you.
Whether, he or she is single, divorced or widowed (like half
the adult population), know this: “All of the good ones are
not taken ... look in the mirror ... you are available, right?”
2. Dating is NOT just a numbers game. There are other
powerfulforcesthatinfluenceourdatingsuccessorfailure.
In other words, TIMING IS EVERYTHING. If the timing
is not right, it will never work. Have you heard the saying:
“Right man! Wrong Time!” For example, a person who has
losttheirjobandisinthethrowsoffinancialstressisjust
not ready for love. That being said, do you have any idea
how many people are online dating or in the bars looking
forfinancialgains?Moreandmoremenandwomencome
tometoprotectwhatthey have(financially).Welivein
an age of economic stress, and the effect this has had on
datingisthatmoreandmorepeoplesufferingfinancially
are looking for someone to “save” them. This makes “the
singles scene” so much more complex. Once upon a time,
peoplelookingforloveonlyhadtoworryaboutfinding
love with an insincere “player.” Today, we also have to
worry about someone wanting us for our money? Sad but
true. This affects women just as much as men these days.
Someone looking for love with a HIDDEN AGENDA of
financialgainsisNOTagoodprospect!
3. Position yourself to meet others who have their
“act” together (home life, work life, retired life, etc.), but
are missing only one thing (their special someone).Your
potential romantic partner should have NO ulterior motive
to be with you ... other then true relationship intimacy.
Enrolling someone who is “relationship ready” is my
highest goal for each new member. At the end of the
confidentialinterview,myhopeistolikethisnewcandidate
so much that I would introduce them to my own sister,
brother, Aunt or Uncle. I am looking for someone that has
a happy life generally...for someone who I can feel good
about representing. People come to me because they are
sick of the bars, too busy to look, or want nothing to do with
the online dating trap. Our clients are too smart to waste
and risk time, money, headache and most of all SAFETY.
I admire the intelligence of the people that come to me to
upgradetheoddsoffindingalastingrelationship.It’sjust
math and science mixed with some common sense.
This month, love the world a little more then last month.
Be smart with who you love. Log off those dating sites. Put
down that drink and do something different in the name of
LOVE. As long as you have pure and honest intentions you
will get what you desire. Have no fear. Fear is the opposite
of love.
Forget trying to find love through self improvement,
charity clubs, or on your own ... you don’t have to do this
alone. He or she is not going to come knocking on your door.
Let cupid shoot her arrow at you! The perfect moment you
seek is the HERE AND NOW! If you follow this Win-Win
plan, it will be the last year you go it alone. The future you
of 2015 will be glad you started in 2014!
Hoping to see many of you at our February/Lucky
in Love Event details to be announced privately. Please
call today for details, as space is limited.
Happy Valentine’s Day to you and yours!!

The following photos were taken at Precision Dating’s

Divorced, widowed, and single guests came to this epic
event from the Treasure Coast, Palm Beaches, and South

late 20s-80s, arrived at staggered times. All guests were
pre-screened by Precision Dating Pros. Many couples who
met that night left in tandem. The energy and good will in
the room truly knocked our socks off, as you can see from

Caring Children Clothing Children is a nonprofit
organization based in Martin County. The mission of the
agency is to collect and distribute gently used clothing, as
well as new items, shoes, socks and underwear, at no cost,
to children in need in our community. In addition literacy
services are provided at preschools who visit the 4Cs
store in Stuart, as well as to at-risk readers in five local
elementary schools.
Over 5,000 children needed basic clothing last year in
Martin County. Funds are being raised by local chefs to
help meet the ever-increasing need. The money raised will
supplement the cost of new items that the 4Cs purchase:

Nearly $3,000 In Cash
For Salvation Army Of
Martin County
On Friday, Dec. 13, Lieutenants Scott and Andrea Hoover
of The Salvation Army of Martin County were greeted with a
mountain of children’s gifts and donations. Through the Piper’s
Landing Yacht & Country Club’s annual Holiday Giving Night,
members collected 186 toys, eight bikes, and nearly $3,000 in
donations for The Salvation Army’s local Angel Tree program.
“This is the 10th year that our members have been involved
with the Salvation Army toy drive and participation was higher
than ever before,” said Piper’s Landing member Jeanne Lambdin,
who coordinated the holiday giving drive. “Watching the gifts
pile up under our tree was heartwarming and knowing how much
joy these presents bring to children makes it so special.”
Booked For Lunch To Feature
Author Scott Eyman
Booklovers have a great afternoon to look forward to in
March at the always-popular “Booked for Lunch” author
event to be held on Thursday, March 6 from 11:30 a.m. to
2 p.m., at Piper’s Landing Yacht & Country Club in Palm
City. Past years have seen sold-out attendance so don’t delay
in purchasing your tickets. Space is limited for this event.
This is the 11th year that the Friends of the Martin County
Library System are sponsoring the event. Proceeds from
the luncheon will be used to support library programs for
children and adults.
Scott Eyman, former literary and art critic for The Palm
Beach Post and author of 11 books, will be the featured
speaker. Scott will be talking about his latest book, You Must
Remember This, which is being released in March. The novel
promises to delve into movie star life behind the scenes,
which should make for an interesting conversation.
A reviewer on www.goodreads.com commented,” With
a career spanning more than five decades, few actors are
more qualified to recount the glamorous Hollywood era
of the late 1940s and early 1950s than Robert Wagner. You

its incomparable style and how it was displayed, and to
its legendary stars. Wagner revisits the houses, restaurants
and other haunts of Hollywood’s elite, offering an intimate
view of their lives on and off screen. He fondly recounts

Tip Of The Tail
Heart Murmurs In Our Pets
What Does It Mean?
A heart murmur is an
abnormal heart sound
caused by turbulent blood
flow within the heart itself
or in one of the two large
arteries leaving the heart. Your veterinarian probably uses
a grading system 1-6 to describe how loud or intense the
murmur is: e.g., grade 1 is very soft and difficult to hear
while a grade 6 is very loud and easy to hear. The grade of
your pet’s heart murmur does not always directly relate to
the severity of the heart disease.
Heart murmurs can develop at any stage of your pet’s
life. Some murmurs are benign or “innocent” meaning there
is no apparent heart disease and may be caused by other
factors such as anemia or excitement. Congenital murmurs
are present at birth and are usually associated with a heart
defect. Acquired murmurs develop during our pet’s lives.
Some canine breeds are more predisposed to heart murmurs
and heart disease such as Dobermans, Boxers, Cavalier King
Charles spaniel. These breeds should be closely monitored
throughout their lives.
What do we do if our pet has a heart murmur?
First, do not panic. A heart murmur is a clinical sign not
a diagnosis of heart disease. Listen to your veterinarian and
fully discuss your pet’s condition to determine if additional
diagnostics such as blood tests, chest radiographs, ECG, or
cardiac ultrasound are indicated at this time to determine the
cause and severity of the murmur. This will give you the best
idea of what to expect in the future and if any medications
are currently indicated to extend your pets life. Visit your
veterinarian regularly as directed to monitor the progression
of the heart murmur.
Catswithamurmurcanbemoredifficulttojudgebecause
a benign murmur may sound identical to a cat with severe
heart disease. Therefore your veterinarian may elect to
perform blood tests, chest radiographs and cardiac ultrasound
or refer your pet to a specialist for these procedures when

What are the signs of heart disease?
In dogs a few signs to watch for are coughing, fatigue,
weakness, exercise intolerance, increased respiratory effort
and rate, loss of appetite, bluish appearing tongue, distended
abdomen.
In cats a few signs to watch for are lethargy, coughing,
weakness,difficultybreathing,lossofappetite,weightloss
and distended abdomen.
If you notice your pet having any of these signs, your pet
should be examined by your veterinarian.

Understanding text

when readers expect

the text with a plan for

Fiction is usually easy
to understand because most
readers are familiar with the
story elements of narrative

have less experience with expository text structure which
may cause them to struggle when reading nonfiction.
Readers may also experience confusion when reading

“Reading Accelerates Success.” That was the theme of
Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! (CLW), a program of the
Just Read, Florida! initiative, which was held Jan. 13-17. The
theme encouraged students to connect literacy with different
kinds of careers in science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics (STEM).
On Dec. 10 and 17, Just Read, Florida! sent its portable
planetarium to Indiantown Middle School and Pinewood
Elementary School in the Martin County School District to
promote Celebrate Literacy Week. The students “sat under
the stars” and learned how reading relates to science and
space technology.
During Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!, all the Martin
County School District’s elementary, middle and high schools
participated in numerous events, including the “Million
Minute Marathon,” author visits, book swaps, guest “readalouds,” characters coming alive through teacher/student
costumes, literacy poster contests, “Reading Rocks, So Wear
Cool Socks!” days, and the wearing of paper hearts featuring
favorite book titles. Pinewood Elementary even gave students
a winter recess activity connected to a favorite book to gear
up for January’s events. Following are some additional events
unique to individual school sites that were held:
Jensen Beach Elementary and Felix A. Williams
Elementary hosted a “Starbooks” Café” in which the
genres of poetry, nonfiction, realistic fiction, biography/

Staging Your Home With
Harriet Aronson, ASID,
Interior Designer
Harriet Aronson has
helped many homeowners
from all over the country,
design, decorate and stage
their homes. If you’re
planning to stay or have just
moved in, Harriet can help
show you how to get the
maximum beauty, comfort
and function out of your
home. Harriet works within
her clients’ budgets and
captures your likes and dislikes, translating them into
beautiful design.
Take the guesswork out of staging your home by calling
Harriet today for her expert advice. You’ll be much more
likely to sell your home faster. Harriet’s professional staging
will also help you get the best price you can. Harriet is
licensed to help you stage your commercial property as well.
Helping people to envision themselves in the home is
the key. Harriet Aronson has shared some reminders with
ustohelpgetyouonyourwaytoaquicker,moreprofitable
sale.
First, Harriet strongly suggests removing all of your
personal effects. Clear out all sentimental items and
photos that you have collected over the years and put them
away until after the sale. Take off all of the magnets and
paraphernalia you have on your refrigerator. Your goal is to
make your home look like one of the models you see when
viewing a new development.
Next, since your goal is always to make the house
appear larger, remove any excess furniture you have that
limits the space in the room. You want the room to feel
airy and open.
Allclosetsshouldbeorganizedandclearedofclutter.
An overstuffed closet will leave the buyer feeling as though
they wouldn’t have enough room for all their things. This
holds true for the garage as well. Clear out any clutter and

of the way.
Harriet has designed and decorated homes and
businesses from New York and Chicago to right here in
Florida. She works with everyone from clients who are
looking for ideas in the building process to homeowners
that are simply trying to freshen their space.
Harriet Aronson, is a member of the ASID (American
Society of Interior Designers) and maintains the education
and licensing requirements to be a state licensed interior
designer. This includes being educated in building codes
and being well versed as to what the Americans with
Disabilities Act requires of a business and public space.
To see more of Harriet’s work, visit www.
HarrietAronson.com, or call her to get an idea of how she
can help you at (772) 283-8405. Harriet Aronson Interior
Design is insured as well as licensed by the state of Florida
as a professional interior designer. She has long held and
maintains her ASID accreditation. Call Harriet today to get
the most out of your home sale, or simply to help you fall in
love with your home all over again.

The company is diligently working to provide expert guidance

The law change designated by the U.S. Environmental

FEBRUARY 2014
A Message From The President
Have you started to think
outside the box yet? I have ideas
for my own life, my business, and
this chamber. Do you?
As much as you sell yourself
have you ever stood back and
listened to the person you are
selling to…what is their business,
could you help them as much as
they can help you? Believe in yourself, love what you do,
make someone else believe in what you are selling. Don’t
expect support if you don’t give it yourself, remember this
most of all. How do you expect people to buy if you don’t
even know what they’re selling? Everyone has something
to sell. This month, I challenge each of you as members and
non-members to be good listeners and hear someone else’s
sales pitch besides your own. What can you give today?
Is it your skills, like our Palm City Chamber volunteers;
or without Bonnie’s tech skills we would be lost on social
media. Do you know how to twitter, tweet or twit? Listen to
your community…maybe it isn’t your money they need, but
your passion for what you are great at. I fall back on doing
what I love, my passion, believing in myself even in dark
times, reaching out to those who believe in me for strength
and guidance.
A Healthy community means a healthy business. What
about the political climate? Are you thinking why would that
matter to me, my voice, one voice means nothing?... You are
wrong. You want to promote your community, speak your
mind; the Palm City community is yours to grow, shape and
support your lifestyle in spite of the political weather. All
Palm City Residents and/or Business Owners stay tuned for
the location, date and time for Town Hall meetings hosted
by the Palm City Chamber of Commerce. The Town Hall
meetings will be intended to inform the community about
Mapp Road improvements, local resident concerns, events
for the future and where you can make a difference. We
invite the Palm City community, County Commissioners,
Community Redevelopment Agency, County engineers,
local business owners to attend and be ready to ask or answer
questions. All members and Non-members are welcome.
Hope to see you at a Town Hall Meeting.

Skinny Palm City
I am proud to join the Palm City Chamber of Commerce.
As a business owner in Palm City for eight years, I believe
in the power of local businesses and the positive economic
effects.
After dieting and exercising four to six times a week
at local gym I hit a plateau. A friend shared a great-tasting
tea, which I drank daily and saw body measurements and
numbers on the scale dropping with minimal change to daily
routine. “I’ve burned 16 pounds of fat since I started drinking
the NuvoGene Tea, the only non-drug, fat-burning tea, which
gave me energy, controlled my appetite and taste good. As a
result I hosted a party to share excitement with friends and
found they saw a valued benefit in purchasing the Boresha
Coffee & Tea, so I decided to market the Boresha Products.
The Boresha products I offer, that boost your body’s
fat-burning potential are B-Skinny Coffee, Nuvo-Gene Tea,
B-Skinny Latte, B-Sweet and B-Creamy, which switch your
body from fat-storing to fat-burning. B-Skinny Coffee is the
ONLY Fat-Burning Coffee in the world uniquely infrared
roasted. The exclusive collection of products is designed
to rejuvenate, enhance performance, promote wellness, are
uniquely engineered as low-glycemic and manufactured to

February, A Month To
Celebrate Romance
I Like To Say ‘Romance Is The
Essence Of Life, And Wine Is What
Kindles The Romance’
By Glenn Sudnick,
Certified Sommelier
So naturally, I celebrate
with the love of my life.
This month, I will make one
of her favorite meals. I am
formally setting the dining
room table with red-andwhite roses, lit pink candles
andsomesoftsmoothjazz
in the background to
set the ambiance. We
are starting with mixed
greens, candy coated
pecans, dried cherries,
delicately topped with
dark cherry balsamic
vinaigrette served
with a warm French
baguette. Of course,
the salad plates and
forks will be chilled. Valentine champagne
The main course will
consist of my baked bourbon wild salmon, sprinkled with
slightly toasted sesame seeds. The side dish will be Israeli
couscous with Porcini and Shitake mushrooms.
At this point you might be saying to yourself, he forgot
the wine? There is something very special planned. I will
be presenting the 2010 Schramsberg Brut Rosé in our 14”
tallchampagneflute glasses.
This bubbly is a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay blend
that has luxurious aromas of fresh picked strawberries
and cinnamon bun. The mousse is fine and silky with
Valentine candy
tremendous flavors of raspberries, strawberries, brioche
and sweet vanilla bean. There is a wealth of tiny bubbles
that seemingly go on forever.
For dessert I am making hot fudge sundaes covered with
sweetheart candy hearts, plenty of fresh whipped cream,
capped with a merry maraschino cherry.
Ifyou’rethinkingofflowers,chocolates,dinnerorjust
celebrating the joy of being together, Cupid (the god of love)
will be looking for you to make the day an exciting one.

Are Vote-By-Mail Ballots The
Wave Of The Future?
By Vicki Davis, Martin County Supervisor of Elections
Lately, everywhere I go, voters have been telling me
how much they liked the city of Stuart’s recent all-mail
ballot election. Almost rhetorically, they ask, “Why don’t
we conduct all elections by mail?” Well, the good news is,
you can vote by mail in 2014. Just ask.
On Nov. 5, the office of the Supervisor of Elections
conducted an all-mail ballot referendum for those voters who
live within the incorporated boundaries of the city of Stuart
asking voters if the city should lease or convey properties for
commercial or governmental use. With roughly 20 percent of
the city’s 10,000 registered voters participating, the answer
was a resounding, “Yes, for approval.” That is, 1,404 (72.3
percent) ballots were cast in favor of allowing the lease or
conveyance, and 538 (27.7 percent) ballots were cast against.
A 20 percent voter turnout may not sound like a lot,
but considering the average voter turnout in city of Stuart
elections is only about 10 percent, I would say it is a big step
in the right direction. The vote-by-mail ballots contributed
immensely to the increased voter turnout.
So, “Why don’t we vote by mail in all our elections?” Well,
Florida law prohibits mail-only elections when candidates

are on the ballot. However, voters are permitted to request a
vote-by-mail ballot, during any election, for any reason.
That’s right, you do not have to be “absent” to request
to vote-by-mail. You can simply request the supervisor of
elections send a ballot to the address of your choosing. It
really is that simple.
Recent trends indicate more and more Floridians are
choosing to vote by nontraditional means. For instance, in
2012, only 27 percent of Martin County voters voted at their
precincts on Election Day, while 73 percent voted early or
voted by mail. In fact, vote-by-mail ballots accounted for 40
percent of all votes cast in Martin County in 2012.
Asmanyofourseasonalcitizenshavelongbeenaware,
vote-by-mail ballots are a convenient way to ensure your
voice is heard and your vote is counted. So, the word is out on
the convenience factor, as more voters are opting to exercise
their civic duty from the comfort of their own homes. Such
is the way of the 21st century.
As we prepare for the 2014 elections, the Martin County

Mediation And Divorce

Q: I want to join a

right gym for me?
A: These are the most
important things to consider
before you join a gym:
1. Location: You know
the old saying, “Location,
location, location!” Find
a gym close to your home
or work. If it is more than a seven-minute drive, statistics
show that you will not use the club very often.
2. Hours:Dotheclub’shoursfityourschedule?Many

out with a mediator and by the end of the day you are hopefully

your divorce. You will probably be exhausted, but you will
finallybeabletocloseoutthatchapterofyourlife.
I have often heard mediators say that “If both parties
leave the mediation a little unhappy, it was a good day and a
fair agreement.” The reason both parties are a little unhappy
is because the only way that mediation is successful is if
both parties compromise. Compromising means you are
not getting exactly what you want.
I find that most people in divorce have two things in
common: 1. Fear of the unknown and 2. Uncertainty about
the future. But here is the secret of mediation: No matter what
the result or what ends up on the piece of paper (please consult
yourattorneyforthatpart),thereisfinality,thereisknowing
and an enormous part of the fear is instantly removed. Now
you don’t have to wait to see what the judge will do, how
much the attorneys will charge or who gets the house. Now
you know. And now you can at least begin to move forward.
Happy Valentine’s Day wishes to you all.

people prefer to workout early mornings, late at night and
on weekends and holidays when they have more time. Will
your gym be open then?
3. Ask for a Free Trial Membership: Many clubs will
allow you to workout once or twice for free. Ask for a free
week trial. Use the club during peak periods and be sure to
use it during the time of day when you will visit most often. Is
it crowded? Is it clean? Do you have to wait to use equipment?
4. Atmosphere: The club atmosphere is very
important. If the atmosphere is macho or intimidating, you
may not be comfortable there. Find a club with a friendly,
helpful atmosphere where you will get plenty of help and
feel comfortable asking questions.
5. Price: “How much does it cost?” This is the most
common question, but not necessarily the most important
one. Memberships are generally about $1 a day, less than
you probably spend each day for a soda or a cup of coffee
and a lot less than an office visit to your doctor. Still, in
today’s economy many people are looking for the cheapest
clubtheycanfind,butconsiderthisbeforeyoubuy.A$10
or $15 club needs a lot of members. This often means that
the club is crowded, members must wait to use equipment
and the staff may have trouble keeping the place clean.
If a pleasant atmosphere, cleanliness and no waiting are
important to you, you may not be happy at a discount club.
6. Commit! Once you have completed your trial
membership, you will know which club is right for you.
Now, make a commitment to your long-term health and
fitness.Don’tjoinforamonthortwo.That’slikeannouncing
that you are not committed to getting healthy or making a
lifestyle change. If you commit to a year, you are much
more likely to reach your fitness goals and develop the
lifelong habit of exercise!
Q: I know I need to start exercising. I’m overweight
and my doctor keeps pushing me to join a gym, but I work
long hours and my time is limited. How much time do I
really need to spend exercising to get healthier?
A: A good initial goal for you would be 30 minutes,
three times a week. Commit to sticking with it for three
months. This is enough for you to get all the heart-healthy
benefitsofexercise,establishthehabitofregularexercise
and increase your energy level. Once you begin to feel
better and you have more energy, you will naturally want
to increase your exercise. A good long-term goal would be
30-60minutes, fivetimesaweek.

Use ‘Tax Diversification’ To
Help Manage Retirement
Income
By Jamie Chapogas, AAMS
You need to save and
invest as much as possible
to pay for the retirement
lifestyle you’ve envisioned.
But
your
retirement
income also depends, to
a certain degree, on how
your retirement funds are
taxed. And that’s why you
may be interested in tax
diversification.
Tounderstandtheconceptoftaxdiversification,you’ll
need to be familiar with how two of the most important
retirement-savings vehicles – an IRA and a 401(k) – are
taxed.Essentially,theseaccountscanbeclassifiedaseither
“traditional” or “Roth.”
When you invest in a traditional IRA or 401(k), your
contributions may be tax-deductible and your earnings
can grow tax-deferred. With a Roth IRA or 401(k), your
contributions are not deductible, but your distributions can
potentially be tax-free, provided you meet certain conditions.
(Keep in mind, though, that to contribute to a Roth IRA,
you can’t exceed designated income limits. Also, not all
employers offer the Roth option for 401(k) plans.)
Of course, “tax-free” sounds better than “tax-deferred,”

Real Estate
Update
By Jim Weix
There has been a lot of talk
about the movie The Wolf of
Wall Street, starring Leonardo
DiCaprio, but what about the
“Wolves of Real Estate?”
These predators abound
inFlorida.Youwillfindthem
on various Web sites that post
real estate that is for sale or
rent by owner.You will find
their homemade signs out in
front of homes and littering the highway, with either a home
for sale, or offering to buy your home for $$$ quickly.
Just recently, one of these creatures was arrested,
with his girlfriend, for selling and leasing homes that they
didn’t own. They amassed 35 homes, from Miami to Stuart,
by filing bogus deeds. They then collected $240,000 in
payments, either as down payments on a purchase or as
rent. Several dozen people fell victim to this scam and
some, who made improvements to their newly “purchased”
home, lost as much as $60,000. These homes were all “For
Sale by Owner” or part of a “Rent-to-Own” scheme.
Obviously not every “For Sale by Owner” home is a
scam. I have sold numerous homes without using a Realtor.
However, when a property is “For Sale by Owner,”
a buyer needs to be wary. The first question that a buyer
needs to ask themselves is “Why is it for sale by owner?”
Isittosavepaying aRealtor?Thatdoesn’tmakefinancial
sense, since the average home sold in 2012 by a Realtor,
sold for 19 percent more than by a For Sale by Owner.
The buyer should also be aware that, unlike a home
listed with a Realtor, it is unlikely that there is going to
be any type of a seller’s property disclosure, or inspection.
That means the buyer is completely on their own.
The most common hidden problems are unpermitted
work done, or work where the permit was never closed out.
Sometimes the seller isn’t even aware that a permit was
needed,orthatapermitwasneverclosedout.Ifindthisallthe
time,becauseIalwayscheckwhenIfirstlistahome.Themost
common is roof repairs done after the hurricanes in 2004.
The foreclosure crisis has created an environment that
is ripe for fraud. When you see a “For Sale by Owner” sign,
remember “Buyer Beware.”

so you might think that a Roth option is always going to be
preferable. But that’s not necessarily the case. If you think
your tax bracket will be lower in retirement than when you
were working, a traditional IRA or 401(k) might be a better
choice, due to the cumulative tax deductions you took at
a higher tax rate. But if your tax bracket will be the same,
or higher, during retirement, then the value of tax-free
distributions from a Roth IRA or 401(k) may outweigh the
benefitsofthetaxdeductionsyou’dgetfromatraditional
IRA or 401(k).
So, making the choice between “traditional” and
“Roth” could be tricky. But here’s the good news: You
don’t necessarily have to choose, at least not with your
IRA. That’s because you may be able to contribute to both
a traditional IRA and a Roth IRA, assuming you meet
the Roth’s income guidelines. This allows you to benefit
from both the tax deductions of the traditional IRA and the
potential tax-free distributions of the Roth IRA.
Andonceyouretire,this“taxdiversification”canbe
especially valuable. Why? Because when you have money
indifferenttypesofaccounts,yougainflexibilityinhow
you structure your withdrawals – and this flexibility can
help you potentially increase the amount of your after-tax
disposable income. If you have a variety of accounts, with
differenttaxtreatments,youcoulddecidetofirstmakeyour
required withdrawals (from a traditional IRA and 401(k)
or other employer-sponsored plan), followed, in order, by
withdrawals from your taxable investment accounts, your
tax-deferredaccountsand,finally,yourtax-freeaccounts.
Keep in mind, though, that you may need to vary your actual
sequence of withdrawals from year to year, depending on
your tax situation. For example, it might make sense to
change the order of withdrawals, or take withdrawals from
multiple accounts, to help reduce taxes and avoid moving
into a different tax bracket.
Clearly,taxdiversificationcanbebeneficial.Soafter
consulting with your tax and financial advisors, consider
ways of allocating your retirement plan contributions to
providetheflexibilityyouneedtomaximizeyourincome
during your retirement years.

Benefits Of Private Duty
In The Hospital
By Jan Robson
Many elderly individuals
think of hospitalization as a
one-way trip. In other words,
theyfightgoingtothehospital
for fear of dying there. If you,
or a loved one, are faced with
inevitable
hospitalization,
perhaps you should plan on
having someone stay with
you at the hospital. It is easier to face a fearful situation
when you do not have to do it alone.
An excellent consolation is to have a bedside
companion at the hospital. Private duty help, either an
aide or a nurse, can provide emotional support to the
patient while staying close by. The private duty attendant
can give one-on-one attention that is not always available
from the hospital staff. The bedside aide/nurse can provide
continuous companionship for the patient and round-theclockcoverage,ifnecessary.Thisisabigbenefitbecause
some hospitals limit visitation. Private duty assistants
are allowed to stay with the patient at all times, without
“visiting hours” restrictions. A good plan that gives peace
of mind to both the patient and the family is to schedule the
private duty help overnight and, of course, if the family is
unable to cover the daytime hours, the private duty person
can cover that as well.
Another benefit of having the help at the hospital is
that those same caregivers can follow the patient home
and continue care there. This eases a patient’s fear of how
he or she will cope with their convalescence at home. The
caregiver can help pack up and transport the patient home.
The first few weeks back home are usually very busy so
the extra help is very important. Some of the things the
caregiver can do is: assist with activities of daily living
with personal care, pick up medications and pharmacy
supplies, make meals and help with shopping, set up the
patient’s room for comfort and recovery, help schedule
follow-up doctor’s appointments, and accompany them to
the appointment, to name a few.

Care, a nurse registry, covering Martin and North Palm
Beach counties. For assistance and advice, please feel free

‘The Woman Of The Nile’
By Carrie Lavargna
Since February is the
month of love, I often write
about how having your
estate documents ready
is a gift of love to your
family.Whenthatdifficult
time arises, your family
knows your wishes and can
make decisions based upon
the roadmap you have left
them.
The importance of this roadmap became very clear to me
over 25 years ago when I was at my aunt’s bedside through
her last days and had to handle her legal affairs after her
death.
It’s such a hard time, but one that can be surprisingly
inspirational and joyous.
Here is a remembrance I wrote several years ago about
my aunt’s last days, called “The Women of The Nile.”
The nursing facility caring for my great Aunt Helen
called me on a Friday afternoon because she had fallen
into a bad state of dementia. Aunt Helen was in her late
70sandfightingherfinalbattleagainstadvancedlupusand
its complications. I arrived at the facility that night and for
thefirsttimeshedidnotrecognizeme.Itwasverydifficult
seeing this independent, proud woman tied to her bed so
that she wouldn’t hurt herself.
Sadly, I called my mom and dad, who lived two hours
distance, and asked them to help me the next day with the
visit. My mom and dad arrived early the following morning
and we went together to the hospital. As my dad was parking
the car, my mom and I walked into Aunt Helen’s room and
greeted her tentatively but joyously.
She looked directly at us and called us by name saying
how happy she was to see us. Then talking directly to my
mom, she said, “I’ve been on the most incredible journey.
They came and took me to see Him.”
“Who,” my mother asked “did you see?”
“Why, God of course,” she replied almost indignantly.
Then being the exacting, bookkeeper-type that she was,
Helen described the contraption they sent to transport her
to heaven as a most sophisticated structure with intricate
wiring.
Helen, who for decades had fervently abandoned her
love for God, was reunited with Him only days before her
death.
Helen was one of three daughters raised in the
Pennsylvania hills. Her father was a Baptist minister and
her mother was quite strict. She didn’t talk much of her
childhood but it was clear that she loved her father greatly
whilehavinghadadifficulttimewithhermother.
I learned more of my aunt’s early life from her sister
when I was handling her estate affairs.
A strikingly beautiful woman, Helen excelled in music
and mathematics. During the Depression she lived at home
and worked as a primary school teacher. One evening,
without her parents’ knowledge, she went to hear a dance
band and fell in love with the saxophone player, my great
Uncle Bud. Bud was charmingly handsome with an easy
smile and a fun electric personality. He was a smoker,
drinker and big band carouser, too!
Her parents strongly disapproved.
Helen’s job as a teacher required that she remain
unmarried. I was told that only a single woman could serve
as teacher in this time because it was deemed inappropriate
for school children to see a pregnant woman.
In the midst of the Depression, Bud worked sporadically,
and they needed to keep her job, so Helen moved out of
her parent’s home, got an apartment and she and Bud lived
together for several years before they married.
Imagine the shock this had on her family – in the 1930s!
Helen’s parents, especially her mother, broke all ties
with her. Helen then lost her faith in God to bitterness.
As it turned out, Helen and Bud never had children but
were very close with my dad’s family.
After my dad and mom married, Aunt Helen and my
mom became very close. They shared being married to
incredibly fun men while each woman had to be the strong,
steady ones throughout their marriages.
Aunt Helen was in her 50s when I was born and as a
child I remember her always as loving but reserved. Uncle
Bud was absolutely fun and warm. I was in my mid-20s
when Uncle Bud died and over the next several years had
the pleasure of getting to know my aunt well.
She moved into a retirement community and had lots
of friends and actively enjoyed the music, reading and art
groups. Her friends had dinner together each evening in the
dining hall and their table motto was: “No Organ Recitals.”
That meant, dinner was to be enjoyable and no one was
allowed to talk of their physical ailments.
Privately though, she anguished for her friends who were
failing and suffering physically.
On the Saturday morning of our hospital visit she spoke
of her journey to heaven, of seeing her father waiting for
her with open arms, and seemed at peace with the close
and inevitable end of her life. She lapsed into silence for
a while, then said to my mother “that she would be one of
them too.”
“One of what?” my mom asked. Helen explained that
God told her of the chosen women that He would take
special care of notwithstanding their difficulties and
suffering on earth.
He called them the “Women of the Nile.”

have never been to the store. You need to come by the new
store and see all the wonderful foods that I have. We have
great desserts from Brooklyn, Italian rum cake, napoleons,
tiramisu, cheesecake and chocolate and regular cannoli,
which are prepared fresh to order.
My Refill and Save Program is one-of-a-kind and
makes a great gift. We met a family who has owned farms
in Greece and Italy for over 400 years. We receive 100
percent extra virgin olive oil and 12-year-old balsamic
vinegar, in bulk, directly from their farms in Greece and
Italy. My customers tell me they are putting both on just
about everything and they love bringing the bottles back to
