he MHSFCA finished its December Recruiting Nights with the
“Night” at Walled Lake Western on Thursday, 10 December. WLW
was the last of nine Recruiting Nights held across Michigan during
the first two weeks of December. The 2015 round of Recruiting
Nights kicked off in Grayling on December first. The Association’s first
“Recruiting Fairs” were held in December of 2011 and drew coaches from
28 colleges and 65 high schools to seven events. This Fall, nine high school
locations saw 127 high school coaches visit 34 colleges. While we didn’t keep
track of prospects attendance in 2011, the number of prospects that attended
the events was just a handful. This year’s Recruiting Nights saw over 530
prospects (and many of their parents) attend the nine events.
The Recruiting Nights are designed to bring high school coaches together
with college coaches in a relaxed, out-of-school atmosphere. In the first part
of the evening, high school coaches seat themselves at cafeteria or library

December Recruiting Night Events
tables and college coaches come to them to get information
on potential prospects and to “network”. Even in years
when a high school may not have a viable prospect for a
particular college, the visit helps to establish a relationship between the coaches, something that’s difficult to do
during the school day. In the second part of the evening,
prospects - freshmen through seniors - and their parents
enter the facility and move between the colleges’ displays,
meeting the college coaches or representatives and filling
out information sheets for those colleges in which they
have an interest. Prospects and parents learn about the
football programs, but also find out about admissions
procedures, costs and financial aid.
The Association thanks the coaches of the nine high
schools who hosted this year’s Recruiting Nights (most
of whom have hosted since the beginning): Tim Sanchez,
Graying; David Janicki, Hartford; David Howes, Escanaba;
Noel Dean, Lowell; Gary Griffith, Troy; Jerry Parker,
Carman Ainsworth; Scott Farley, Jackson; Mark Tyler,
Edsel Ford; Mike Zdebski, Walled Lake Western.
While we still have a lot of high school coaches who
haven’t taken advantage of the Recruiting Nights (for
some the distances are too great or the schedule just
doesn’t work), more and more MHSFCA member coaches
are finding the Recruiting Night experience rewarding
for themselves and especially for their athletes and their
athletes’ parents. We hope this will continue next fall.

Yes, Kids Should Play Football!
Brad Bush, Chelsea High School
eadlines about concussions in football have
the game under attack. The truth is the
game has never been safer. Rules changes,
equipment improvements, and practice and
game rules have made high school football and athletics a great option for young people to play.
Playing high school sports teaches young people
life lessons. Our commitment to keeping youth,
middle school and high school football safe is real.
Many of the things you see in the media are related to
issues that occurred in the NFL in past years. The commitment of the MHSAA and National Federation of
State High School Associations (NFHS) has made high
school football a safe and fun game for young people.
As a football dad, I cannot imagine the high school
experience of my son without the game of football.
If you have concerns about your son or daughter
participating in the game of football, please review the
information included in the links below. If you ever
have questions about football or athletics in general,
please contact your local youth, middle school or high
school coach or the Michigan High School Football
Coaches Association at MHSFCA.com.

What was old is new again in 2016!
MHSFCA will be playing an East vs West All Star Game
June 25th 2016 at Saginaw Valley State University.
fter establishing All Star dominance over Ohio
the past two seasons the MHSFCA will be going
back to the East vs. West format for 2016. As we
move forward in planning for the game, you as
coaches should be aware of your responsibilities that will
go a long way to making this year’s game a tremendous
experience for the players, coaches, and football fans from
across the state.
First, and probably most importantly, please check
your emails for the electronic nomination forms that were
sent out the week of December 7th. This year we are not
requiring each All Star team to have a certain number of
players from the classes A, B, C, and D but, instead are
requiring each team to have at least one representative
from each MHSFCA region across the state. The West
team will be made-up players from, Regions 1-9 plus an
8-man player. The East will have players from Regions
10-17 with an 8-man representative as well. The rest of
the 40 man roster will be filled with “at-large” selections
with no more than one player from an individual high
school.
With these new roster requirements it is more important than ever that we get at least one nomination from
each coach across the state. Nominations will be due no
later than January 15th with the final rosters being selected
early in February.
The All Star committee is very excited about the future
of our game and the East-West format. We will be giving
80 deserving players a great experience and at the same
time showcasing everything that is great about high school
football in our state.

Quick Lane Bowl
Central Michigan vs. Minnesota
December 28th - 5 pm. on ESPN2
he 2015 Quick Lane Bowl will be played on
Monday, December 28 at 5 PM ET at Ford Field
and televised by ESPN2.
Tickets start at $29 and are available for purchase at www.fordfield.com. Additionally, Detroit
Lions pocket schedules have a Quick Lane Bowl ticket
promotional code.
The Quick Lane Bowl will feature teams from the
Big Ten and ACC. At the end of the college football
season, officials from both conferences will meet with
bowl officials to determine the best possible matchup
and choose their team representatives.
In the inaugural game (2014), the Rutgers University
Scarlet Knights defeated the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, 40-21. Detroit Lions rookie FB Michael
Burton played a prominent role in the victory, helping
courtesy of the Detroit Lions
to pave the way for 340 team rushing yards for Rutgers.
2015 will be the second year of a multiyear agreement
for Ford’s Quick Lane Tire and Auto Center as the title
sponsor of an annual college football bowl game at Ford
Field.
The Detroit Lions are the only NFL team to own,
host and operate a college football bowl game. The team’s
entertainment division, DLI Entertainment, has promoted
multiple large-scale shows and events at Ford Field, including seven consecutive sold-out Kenny Chesney concerts,
Taylor Swift, the 2003 Basketbowl, 2008 NCAA Men’s
Basketball Regionals, 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final
Four and the 2010 NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Frozen Four.

Coach-To-Coach
Mentoring Program
ver had a question about how to do your job as a coach and not know where to turn for an answer? Need the name of
an experienced coach who you could talk to in confidence about answering that question - or solving that problem? The
MHSFCA has initiated a new “mentoring” program that you can turn to for this kind of help. Called Coach-To-Coach,
that is exactly what it is. Experienced coaches who have a long standing relationship with the MHSFCA (Past Presidents,
Regional Directors, Committee Members, etc.) have agreed to have their names and contact information listed at MHSFCA.
com as volunteer mentors. If you have something you need help with, look over the list, contact one (or more) of the Coach-ToCoach volunteers. Each of the volunteers has several years of coaching experience. Get their advice. It’s free and confidential.
Find the list of Coach-To-Coach volunteers at

things to list. We at Muskegon Orchard View have been
truly blessed to have a man such as Denny give some
much to our community.
Doug Morgan

For the past 20 years seasons, Doug has done all of Linden
High Schools scouting for opponents, film breakdown
and has attended all of our football coaches meetings.

for the Linden High School football program and this has
been a big blessing to the Head Football Coach Dennis
Hopkins. Doug is a Vietnam Veteran and a recipient of
the Purple Heart.
David Phillips

Football games for the past 44 years. David began working the chains at Ida high school in the fall of 1971 when
he returned from his time in the service for his country.
Prior to that date, Dave and his father worked the chains
15 years. Dave’s son and grandson have joined him on the
crew and to date Mr. Phillips and his family have volunteered this service to the school and have never received
compensation nor have they ever asked for compensation
Instead they have dedication hard work and loyalty to
the Ida Community.
