visited Canyonlands Field Institute in April 2012
near Moab, Utah. They spent six days in a desert
field camp exploring biology, anthropology,
environmental science and social justice.
Students hiked mesas, star gazed, conducted river
experiments, wrote poetry, debated local politics,
identified desert flora and fauna, and river rafted.

leading a La Salle trip to New York City every
other year since the early 1980s. The trip is a
theatre tour packed with Broadway shows. The
group also visits museums and historic landmarks
including the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the
Empire State Building and St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

As educators, we pay attention to all of
this information and design a relevant
and rigorous curriculum to prepare
our students for success in college and
in life; for a satisfying and impactful
future. However, this is not our primary
mission.
In this magazine, you will witness the
broad impact of our intended goal - to
form the young people entrusted to our
care. The formation of our students is
much more than inspirational phrases
at the school’s entrance. It is not
accomplished by simply reviewing the
dress code, nor accomplished with four
years of religious studies. These practices
all have their place in creating our
community, but they do not address the
heart of the matter.
Catholic education emphasizes the
specific understanding of what it means
to be human . . . the reality of our
spiritual center and connectedness . .
. our faith as foundational to all that
we do. Our teachers and staff are asked
to accompany our students along this
incredible journey. It is not enough that
teachers deliver an excellent quality
curriculum or boast of their students’
eventual collegiate successes.
Our dedicated educators are asked to
impart the reality of the Holy Presence of
God . . . to offer a conduit in recognition
of the “holiness” in our students’
lives . . . to provide an immersion in
the opportunity to be aware of such
transformation.

La Salle Takes Plunge for Special Olympics
Historic Gift Supports Student Scholars
Thirty-three La Salle Prep students, teachers and family
members ran into the icy Columbia River on February 11,
2012, to raise $4,434 for Special Olympics Oregon. The
team wore red-feathered masks, red body paint and shirts
that read “Put a Bird on It” in honor of the La Salle Falcon
mascot.
Oregon philanthropists Mark and Pam Donegan made
a $2.5 million investment to provide pathways for young
people to realize their full potential at La Salle Catholic
College Preparatory. By supporting the school’s mission to
provide access to excellent education to those who desire
it, regardless of the student’s financial means, the Donegan
family is assuring access for many students in the future.
“I am very proud of the La Salle community with the way
they embraced the challenge to increase awareness about
being accepting of those who have disabilities through how
we act and what we say,” said La Salle’s director of service
Stephanie Blumenson.
The philanthropic investment, representing the single largest
gift in school history, established the Donegan Family
Scholarship Fund, a legacy that will honor the Donegans’
commitment to many young people at La Salle.
The team earned second place for the amount of money
raised in the K-12 school division and first place for the
most participants in a school group. Sophomore Joslynn
Bigelow raised an impressive $1,000 and freshman Jack Kain
raised more than $6,500 for Special Olympics. As a Super
Plunger, Kain ran in and out of the Columbia River every
hour for 24 hours. He was supported by his parents, Patty
and Tommy, brother Ryan, and sister Maren.
“Mark and Pam have demonstrated their commitment to
providing opportunities to students with limitless potential,
who come from modest financial means, through their
partnership with La Salle Prep over the past decade. I am
constantly amazed at their generosity and modesty. It has
always been about the kids for them. This is philanthropy
in its most beautiful form,” explained President Denise L.
Jones.
Students Respond to Childhood Poverty
Class of 2010 College Data Released
As part of the annual school-wide theme, La Salle students
are studying the issue of how they can break the cycle of
childhood poverty. Through student activities, curriculum
and programs, the community is responding to those in
need.
The Oregon University System (OUS) recently released
college data profiling La Salle’s 2010 graduates who entered
an Oregon public university as freshmen. The reports,
available for all Oregon high schools at www.ous.edu,
indicate the promising results of La Salle’s rigorous college
preparatory curriculum.
For example, at Lot Whitcomb, a public elementary school
near La Salle with nearly 90% of students at or below the
federal poverty line, La Salle participates in the Backpack
Buddies program to provide weekend food for fifty children.
Also, beyond sponsoring families during the holidays, La
Salle partners with Lot Whitcomb to provide its students
with mentors for an hour each week throughout the year.
In an open letter, student leaders wrote, “La Salle has
responded to the local community and is working to end the
cycle of childhood poverty here in Milwaukie.” To read the

La Salle’s Vice Principal for Academics Andy Kuffner shared
his interpretation of the results. “Upon entering college as
freshmen, high school grade point averages (GPAs) of La
Salle graduates were about .2 points lower than the average
GPA for all incoming OUS college freshmen. However,
comparing the college GPAs of these same students after
their first year, La Salle graduates earned an average GPA
which is .2 higher than the average for all college freshmen.
This means that the college preparatory rigor reflected in
La Salle’s GPA translated into better success in college-level
work,” he explained.

Inaugural La Salle Prep Career Day
Dozens of La Salle alumni, parents and supporters flocked
to campus for the inaugural career day on February 29,
2012. Alumni Board Service Chair Kelsey Powell ’02, the
visionary behind the event, planned an inspiring morning
for students to learn from the career paths of dozens of
speakers, including firefighter Jason VanderZanden ’99
(above).

Keynote speaker Steve Feltz ’73 shared his story at the
opening assembly, then students heard from alumni and
parents about their career experiences. Speakers included
engineers, attorneys, professors and financial advisors

Falcons Win First State Championships in Football and Chess
La Salle Prep won its first football title in school history with a 45-40 win over
Siuslaw at Hillsboro Stadium on December 3, 2011 (above). The Falcons’ win
capped a 14-0 perfect season! La Salle’s chess club (above right/right) swelled
to include more than 60 participants and the varsity team increased to more
than 30 players. The team tied for first place at the state championships.
Winter 2012 Sports and Activities Update
Falcons’ winter sports teams and clubs had excellent seasons. After the great
fall season we were the top 4A school for boys and boys/girls combined based
on our athletic performance. Throughout the winter sport season, all teams
performed well at the conference and state level.
Our boys’ ski team had one student qualify for the state championships in
the Giant Slalom. Our boys’ freestyle ski team finished third in league and
Nash Lisac ’14 won the conference championship as an individual. La Salle’s
snowboard team (right) also had a great season. Five athletes represented La
Salle at the snowboard state championships and the team finished in 4th place
overall for the Banked Slalom. La Salle’s girls’ ski team finished in third place at
the state championships (lower right).
The girls’ basketball team had a great year. In the playoffs, Tillamook defeated
the girls’ team in a contest that was decided in the last minutes of the game.
The boys’ team defeated Tillamook in a home play-in game. In a sold-out
game, Roosevelt defeated the boys’ team in a game filled with a great playoff
atmosphere as both teams played well.
Falcon cheerleaders received recognition for their team GPA of 3.3. Our
boys’ and girls’ swimming teams each finished in 2nd place at the district
championships. Those teams qualified swimmers for the state championships.
Our racquetball team had a successful season highlighted by freshman Lexi
York winning a state and national championship as an individual.
The speech and debate team (right) ended its inaugural season with
Christopher Dowhaniuk ’14 attending the National Qualifiers tournament
sponsored by the National Forensics League to present his Original Oratory
speech on the value of sports. Sean Caster ’13, Aaron Granato ’14, Christopher
Dowhaniuk ’14, Moira Eaton ’15 and Christopher Harding ’15 attended the
OSAA Speech and Debate Championships at Western Oregon University in
April 2012.

In the Game at STEM Showcase
La Salle Students Earn CCC Skills Honors
La Salle Prep hosted its 2nd annual Science Technology
Engineering Math (STEM) Academy Showcase focused on
the dynamic field of video games on Thursday, February 2,
2012. The event featured three interactive hands-on sessions
led by Anton Kimball Design Owner Anton Kimball;
Supergenius Animation Director Bryan Provencher and
Funnelbox Production Studios Junior Creative Director
Jesse Salsberry.
La Salle’s German program won first and second prizes
at the Clackamas Community College (CCC) Regional
Skills Competition. In German 2, Andrea Vu ’14 won first
and Rebecca Smith ’14 earned second place. In German
3, Rachael Beyer ’13 won first place; in German 4, Allison
Mathews ’12 won first place. Also, the Goethe-Institut
of the United States and Canada awarded our German
students a certificate of participation in the 2011/2012
Award of Excellence Competition.
The well-attended event welcomed keynote speaker Tom
Sperry, CEO of Exit Games, who illustrated the real
world value of a STEM education and explored the future
of global technologies on a panel with Provencher and
Salsberry (pictured above with Charlie Summers ’13).

This summer, ten La Salle Prep students will participate
in the GAPP (German-American Partnership Program)
exchange with Heiligenhaus, Germany (photo from past
trip above). Our German partner students will arrive in late
September and will spend two weeks at La Salle.
Ms. Bromley Returns to Campus
La Salle Prep math teacher Loreva Bromley returned to the
school campus, filled with grateful students and colleagues, on
April 9, 2012, after a two-month leave for cancer treatment.
She started with two geometry classes, then increased to four
classes with plans to return to her full-time schedule in May.
“I have been keenly aware of how everyone circled around
me and helped me get through this. Thank you! This is more
than just a place to work; it’s a community, it’s a family,” said
Bromley.
Student Writer Honored
Congratulations to junior Kayla Roysdon for receiving an
honorable mention from the high school essay contest by
the Garaventa Center for Catholic Intellectual Life and
American Culture at the University of Portland. Roysdon’s
essay focused on the 2012 theme of The Geography of
Hope. Next year’s essay contest will focus on the quote from
the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, “Behold, I am doing a new
thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?”

Noah Banks Helps Educators End Bullying
Senior Noah Banks, Chairperson for the Happy Valley Youth Council and
Volunteer with the Oregon Partnership Youth Crisis Line, presented to a group
of educators at Barnes & Noble in Clackamas in January 2012 (right). He shared
information on how educators can stop bullying in schools.
“Noah is an asset to our store’s team in more ways than I had ever imagined.
Because of Noah’s experiences and skills, combined with his willingness to share
and ability to articulate well, the educators at our event could not ask enough
questions of him. He was the perfect person to inspire, motivate and educate those
who wish to further their efforts to stop bullying in our schools and communities,”
explained Page Jordan, Barnes & Noble community relations training manager.
Published Author Ashley Malin
Senior Ashley Malin’s debut novel, Shattered Peace, is a young adult fantasy novel
that took three years to write (right). She recently spoke to students at Christ
the King School and encouraged them to write as a way to express themselves.
“Writing is more of a lifestyle for me. It’s more about expressing myself than
writing to be published,” explained Malin. You can order Shattered Peace on

Aerial Artist Josie Oleson
Kudos to senior Josie Oleson, who has been training with Pendulum Aerial Arts
since 1999, has been in every youth performance and became the youngest artist
ever to be taken as apprentice.

Jason Zwick ’96, owner of Jason Zwick State Farm
Insurance Agency in NE Portland, recently celebrated
his 5th anniversary with State Farm. He lives in Tigard
with his wife, Kisa Holden, and their daughter, Avery
(6). Jason and Kisa celebrated their 10th wedding
anniversary in April 2012.

Ted Pfeifer ’88 joined the La Salle Prep staff as the
Associate Director of Public Relations. He and his wife
Missy Quiray Pfeifer ’88 have two children: Mason,
who attends La Salle as a sophomore and Madison, a 7th
grader at Christ the King.

Matthew Call ’94 married Wendy Wimer (above)
January 7, 2012, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church
in Portland. Wendy is a math teacher at La Salle while
Matthew is a real estate appraiser in Portland. They met
while coaching cross country at La Salle, and the school’s
activities bus transported the wedding party from the
ceremony to the reception. Garrett Call ’94, Andrew
Call ’99, Laura Call ’05 and Patrick Tandingan ’94 were
in the wedding party. The newlyweds currently live in SE
Portland.

In Memoriam
Geoffrey Hills ’03 graduated with a BS in Finance
from Seattle University in 2008. After graduation, he
worked for Epic Systems, the nation’s largest electronic
medical record company as a project manager. He is
currently a first year MBA candidate at the University
of Wisconsin - Madison’s Center for Corporate Finance
and Investment Banking. This summer he will intern
at Ernst & Young in its transfer pricing practice. In his
free time, he volunteers with the Big Brother Big Sister
program and enjoys a good Oregon Pinot Noir.
Charleton “Chuck” Trumpower ’03 (below) married
Adrienne Ashby on August 21, 2011, at St. George
Orthodox Church in Portland. He is in his second
year teaching at St. John
of Keonstadt School in
Yakima, WA. The couple,
expecting their first child
