STORY
S
By Jay Bobbin
Pictured: John Corbett
Over its seven-season run, “Rescue Me” became one of
FX’s signature shows. Can Denis Leary do it again for the
network?
He’s ready to try. The ever-frank actor-comedian
moves far away from the earlier series’ firefighter
theme to play a literal rock star in the seriocomic
“Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll,” premiering Thursday, July 16.
His alter ego Johnny Rock is a hard-living burnout of the
music business, his group the Heathens having been
dismembered 25 years ago over personal conflicts ... very
specifically, the discovery of Johnny’s intimate encounter
with the wife of lead guitarist Flash (John Corbett).
The daughter (Elizabeth Gillies, “Victorious”) Johnny
didn’t know he had is an aspiring singer who wants
to reunite the band, but Johnny would have to take a
backseat since she’d be fronting the band. New conflicts
threaten to open old wounds, with the other regathered
Heathens played by John Ales, Bobby Kelly and Elaine
Hendrix. Adding authenticity, Foo Fighters frontman Dave
Grohl appears in the first episode.
Also the writer and director and an executive producer of
the new show, as well as a composer for it, Leary admits
he’s “not really a singer. I can belt. I can scream, you
know. So I knew I could handle what I had to handle, but
the character of the daughter was going to have to really
sing some songs with a lot of real emotion, rock ‘n’ roll,
kick-ass songs and some balance. And I wanted to have
everything available, right? So that means I had to have a
girl who could really sing and would be willing to sing live
on set, because I wanted the vocals to be recorded live.”
Enter co-star Gillies, who has partnered tunefully with
Ariana Grande several times and has a YouTube account
on which she performs cover versions of known songs.
She’s not the only cast member with actual music
experience, since “Sex and the City” and “Northern
Exposure” alum Corbett also has it.
“I kind of have a country-rock band,” he says, “put a
couple records out. We’ve gone around the country for
10 years now and play 500-, 600-seaters. Some people
were trying to get me on that show ‘Nashville’ a couple
years ago, and I just said, ‘No, thanks. I’m not interested
in it.’ This just happens to be ... I mean, we could be
astronauts. It just happens to be in the rock-and-roll
world, which is a world I love.”
While going for humor that’s true to the characters, Leary
also has aimed to make “Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll” realistic
about the ups and downs faced by those in the music
world.
“I think there’s a couple of things in the show,” he reflects,
“the funny parts especially, that will resonate in terms of
making fun of what it’s like to be a working, struggling
musician and come up with a bad song idea. Everybody
thinks when you write a song, you think it’s the greatest f–
-ing thing in the world, you know. You should usually wait
a couple of days and play it for a few people. Sometimes,
if your ego is big enough, you think the biggest piece of
s–- is the greatest thing ever written. So I hope we pull
that off.”

What do you have to say about
CW chief Mark Pedowitz’s
support of “Beauty and the
Beast,” to the extent that the
show received a Season 4
renewal before the current
Season 3 premiered?
He’s really stood behind it,
regardless of what’s been going
on with ratings or numbers or
whatever. He’s seen that there’s
a really strong fan base for it, and
that’s pretty wonderful.
Are you enjoying having
Nicole Gale Anderson on
board full-time this season
as Heather, the sister of
your Catherine Chandler?
She is such a great actress
... funny, great range,
easy access to a lot of her
emotions. I really love working
with her, and she’s wonderful
to have around. She’s a bright,
bright light.
Heather has a wonderful arc
this season. She knows now
(about Catherine and Vincent’s
relationship) and doesn’t know
quite how to keep it quiet,
and it results in a lot of humor
because she’s trying to be a
part of the gang.

How do you find
your following from
“Smallville,” and from
your tenure as Lana Lang,
in responding to the other
work you’ve been doing
since?
Well, they’re different
experiences for me. I’m
mostly recognized for
“Smallville” if I’m on the
street or just hanging out;
that’s normally what people
approach me for.
The fans who have stuck
with me from before
“Smallville,” and also
those who have come on
board during “Beauty and

themselves to be very
engaged and dynamic. I
find them to be intelligent
and respectful, which is
awesome. There’s that

LizzyCaplan
of ‘Masters of Sex’ on Showtime
It’s been said that as they
aged, the real William Masters
mellowed and became nicer
while Virginia Johnson
became less so. Had you
heard that?
Yes, and that’s one of the things
that I hope we have enough
episodes in which that switch
gets to happen because I find
that completely exciting as an
actress, to see these two people
switch roles. Yes, as Bill gets
older he gets softer and kinder,
and as Virginia, existing in this
world for longer, she becomes
more and more paranoid that
she doesn’t have a college
degree. Everybody assumes
she’s a doctor but she has no
college degree whatsoever and
that starts to wear on her and
she becomes more paranoid
and suspicious and harder as a
result of it. You see little bits of
it in this season. You definitely
see Bill trying to be kinder to
Virginia, which is so strange.
So does your Virginia start to
go the other way this season?
She’s definitely still Virginia
Johnson ... and she’s never
been a woman without opinions
but she has been a woman who
had not been allowed to voice
these opinions. That is no longer
the case and so Bill and Virginia
go at each other quite a bit and
she disagrees with him often
and she doesn’t have to swallow
her voice so much anymore,
which is great.

of ‘Geeks Who Drink’ on Syfy
You’re so known for acting, how did you
come to be both the host and an executive
producer as Syfy launches the competition
series “Geeks Who Drink” Thursday, July
16?
What I try to do is just be open to the things
that are being thrown at me, and try to
decipher if it’s something it’s the right time
for, or if I need to pass on it. I’ve been aware
of pub trivia for a long time, and “Geeks Who
Drink” is the biggest circuit for that in the
United States. It’s in 500 bars or so.
Originally, there was talk of my hosting it and
I said, “I don’t really want to do that.” It was a
journey getting there, because I already had
so many plates spinning, I didn’t know that I
could take on that gig. We ended up producing
a great presentation, but the host didn’t quite
work out, so (the other producers) came back
and said they thought I was still the guy to host
it. It was my baby and my brand, so I said, “OK,
let’s go do it.” And I’m glad I did.
You do have a lot of irons in the fire right
now, given “Geeks Who Drink” plus the
upcoming “Heroes Reborn” and “Tangled”
series and your other production-company
efforts. How are you handling it all?
Fortunately, they’re all very different. It’s many
hats, but I also have a lot of great people
around me, helping me to tackle each one of
them. I have my producing partners at Middle
Man and my development deal with NBC
Universal, and there are various other projects
that are spinning in the air that we’ll hopefully
birth into the world ... and we’ll see how people
like those babies. I hope they love them.

Symon hits personal favorites for ‘Burgers, Brews & ‘Que’
Michael Symon has a cadre of haunts he hits in whatever city he happens to be in and he
shares some of them in the new Food Network series “Burgers, Brews & ‘Que.”
As the title suggests, the half-hour series, which premieres Friday, July 17, is all about
hamburgers, craft beers and barbecued meat, or what Symon calls “my three favorite food
groups,” as he hits joints, full-service restaurants and even upscale eateries in New York City,
Nashville, Tenn., and his hometown of Cleveland.
“It’s really kind of like the joints and places that I’ve discovered over 30 years of cooking
professionally,” he says, “that you could sneak out to and have a really ice cold beer and some
delicious, simple food.”
In the opening episode, Symon heads to Nashville and Hattie B’s to try its traditional hot
chicken.
“It’s a style of chicken that started in Nashville about 60-70 years ago,” Symon explains. “...
Essentially after they fry the chicken they take a little bit of the fat from the fryer and mix it
with a bunch of chillies and different kinds of powders and hot sauces. And when the chicken
comes out of the fryer, they toss it again in that superhot oil. ... Usually when you go, you can
get just plain fried chicken, a little spicy, spicy, spicier and then insanely spicy. ... . The place we
went, the superhot one they called ‘Shut the Cluck Up.’ ”
The temperature then comes down a few degrees in New York, where Symon hits Might Quinn’s to sample the
brontosaurus beef ribs, where the meat is tasty and tender but not falling off the bone.
“Proper barbecue should never completely come off the bone,” he says. “When you bite into it, it should have a little bit
of resistance, where you would actually see your teeth marks in the meat. So it’s smoked for a long time. I think that one
was done like 15 or 16 hours, so it had a really deep smoked flavor and a great smoke ring and wonderful bark.”
Then there is the brunch burger at Cleveland’s Flying Fig, which has a very unusual topping.
“The brunch burger was at an old friend of mine’s restaurant, Karen Small,” Symon says. “She does an insane brunch
at her restaurant, and one of the things she does at brunch is a burger with locally sourced beef, locally sourced bacon,
homemade bun, a fried egg on top. Just really delicious.”
What book are you currently reading?
“My son just got it for me yesterday. It’s called ‘Historic
Shops & Restaurants of New York.’ It’s a book about the
history of New York and essentially restaurants, butcher
shops and regular shops that have been there more than
60 years.”
very light sauce, nice and charred on the crust with some
fresh basil.”
What is your next project?
“We’re opening up a barbecue restaurant in Cleveland
called Mabel’s.”
What did you have for dinner last night?
When was the last vacation you took, where and why?
“I’m actually finishing it off right now. I had pizza (laughs).
New York-style pie, fresh mozzarella, very light cheese,
“The last vacation I took was last summer, it was in the
Hamptons and it was because my son lives there.”

“Hell on Wheels” star Anson Mount describes his first acting moment as “like being struck by
lightning.”
Mount was in high school in his hometown of White Bluff, Tenn., and he had joined the drama
club because most of his friends were in it. His first role was as the guard in “12 Angry Men”
and though he considered the part thankless, he was nonetheless hooked.
“It was the lightning bolt they talk about when people fall in love,” says the 42-year-old actor.
“... And there was just no going back.”
Saturday, July 18, Mount begins his fifth and final season as Cullen Bohannon, the former
Confederate soldier working on the construction of the first Transcontinental Railroad across
the United States in the years following the Civil War. This season, Bohannon joins the Central
Pacific Railroad as it works its way west across the Sierra Nevadas, blasting through granite
mountainsides one inch at a time.
Mount was originally drawn to the role of Bohannon for a number of reasons.
“First of all, it was the best pilot script I’ve ever read,” he says. “... It was a really dark antihero
and it required a true Southerner to play the role, not just for the accent but the knowledge of
the culture and, I don’t know, I just felt I could get under his skin and I felt confident I could do
a good job with the role.”
Mount credits much of his skill as an actor to his undergraduate education at the University of
the South, where he majored in liberal arts.
“That served me better than any acting class I’ve ever taken,” he says. “It taught me to
communicate in a variety of ways, and more importantly as an actor, it taught me to think in
a variety of different ways. I didn’t just come out of school thinking like an actor. I knew how
to think abstractly but I also knew how to think anthropologically, mathematically, linguistically,
and I had a broad education. More than anything, when you learn how to write, it’s the first
step toward recognizing what good material is and what good material is not.”

The movie world has its iconic, enduring characters such as be a part of the future and get the sequel that goes

“Fred” is Fred Wolf, who co-wrote the first “Joe Dirt” with
Spade and has done the same for the sequel, which he
also directed. Christopher Walken, Brittany Daniel, Dennis
Miller and Adam Beach also reprise their original roles
– with Mark McGrath and Spade’s “Rules of Engagement”
co-star Patrick Warburton as new characters.
It’s taken 14 years, but David Spade’s mullet-sporting ne’erdo-well returns in “Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser,” which the
streaming service Crackle premieres Thursday, July 16.
Made by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions in
Louisiana, where the first “Dirt” largely was set, the new
tale transports Joe back to his past via a tornado and
challenges him to get back to his future.
“Sometimes, it’s a timing thing and getting everyone
together,” Spade says of the sequel. “I remember they did
a ‘Deuce Bigalow’ and ‘Deuce Bigalow 2’ – and then they
sort of relaxed on sequels for a little bit. And then we sort of
relaxed with them, but we had a script. We always wanted
to do it, we just didn’t know what to do about that. It was
either, ‘They’re going to come to us’ or ‘We’re going to go to
them.’ ”
Sony Pictures Television president Steve Mosko jumpstarted the project by proposing it for the Sony-owned
Crackle, according to Spade: “He thought it would be a

“I know we’re talking about ‘Joe Dirt,’ we’re not talking
‘Citizen Kane,’ ” Wolf reflects, “but we did want there to
be some emotional drive to it. And it took us a few years
to think about what could be as powerful a drive as the
first one had (which had Joe seeking the parents who
abandoned him at the Grand Canyon). In this one, one of
the things that kind of makes it exciting is the idea that he
wants to find out why he feels so unlovable.”
Conversely, Spade knows how much the original “Joe
Dirt” is loved by those who appreciate it. “I like it because
it’s sort of lived on,” he says, though he allows that “it
wasn’t really a huge moneymaker for me. It’s a nice
feeling to have this as the business I’m in. I’m in comedy,
and people remember certain things.”

What becomes an acting legend most? A legendary role,
and Angela Lansbury has made another one her own.
The stage, film and television icon teamed with another
entertainment titan – James Earl Jones – for a 2013
Australian tour of “Driving Miss Daisy,” Alfred Uhry’s
seriocomic, Pulitzer Prize-winning play about a stubborn
Southern widow and the folksy chauffeur hired for her by
her son (Boyd Gaines, a multiple Tony Award winner like
his co-stars). Shown briefly in U.S. movie theaters last
summer, a production recorded at Melbourne’s Comedy
Theatre airs on PBS’ “Great Performances” Friday, July
17 (check local listings).
“It affords one tremendous opportunities, quite frankly,
to bring forth the qualities that you sense are inherent
in the script,” Lansbury reflects of spanning 25 years
(1948-73) in the life of no-nonsense Daisy Werthan. “I
just really believed every word I was saying, and I really
understood her attitude. Then, there’s the way the story
unfolds, how her friendship (with driver Hoke Colburn)
becomes so touching and so warm.
“It was a great experience doing this, especially being a
British woman,” adds Lansbury, who considers Jessica
Tandy’s Oscar-winning 1989 portrayal of Daisy “simply
marvelous, to be British and to play a Southern woman
of that age in that period in history. I consider myself
more American than anything, but I have those English
instincts that I have to push aside when I’m playing this
role. They don’t fit.”
Jones and Gaines also played their “Daisy” parts
opposite Vanessa Redgrave in the play’s 2010-11
Broadway premiere (it originated Off-Broadway in the
late 1980s), and in London later in 2011. Lansbury
deems them “the best. Boyd’s a lovely actor, and (with
Jones,) it was a fairly immediate rapport between two
actors who knew exactly what they were going to do. It
was thrilling to bring it off the page and into the reality
which is theater.”
Lansbury also has returned to the stage in “Blithe Spirit”
(which brought her the most recent of her five Tonys,
plus England’s Olivier Award) and “The Best Man” over
the past several years. She has received other major
accolades lately, including an honorary Oscar, an
American Film Institute doctorate, and appointment as a
Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
“It seems that if you remain alive long enough, these are
the things that come drifting your way,” she muses. “I’m
very proud and humbled to have received, and to have
been given, so much recognition. What can I say? It’s
terrific.”
Ever-popular with young fans for her work in the Disney
classics “Bedknobs and Broomsticks” and (in voice only)
“Beauty and the Beast,” Lansbury also remains beloved
globally for her 12-season run on “Murder, She Wrote.”
While she appreciates the fans the series’ repeats have,
she wouldn’t consider reviving mystery novelist Jessica
Fletcher now.
“I think it would be a downer,” she reasons. “In some way,
we’d have to show her as a much older woman, and I
think it’s better to maintain that picture we have in our
mind’s eye of her as a vigorous person. I’m still pretty
vigorous, especially in the garden ... but if I wanted to
transform myself back into the woman I looked like then,
it would be ridiculous. And I can’t do that.”

It is said that for true growth to occur, one must step out of
one’s own comfort zone.
“It’s amazing what we can do when we are hungry,” he
adds.
And that is the overriding theme of NBC’s “Running Wild
With Bear Grylls,” the second-year unscripted series in
which the British adventurer takes celebrities on a 48-hour
trek through rugged and often often unforgiving terrain. In
Season 1, celebrities such as Zac Efron, Ben Stiller and
Tom Arnold parachuted into wilderness, rappelled off cliffs
and killed potentially lethal creatures for dinner. Some
faced down paralyzing fears and others learned new skills.
In the end, all felt energized by the experience.
Others proved their resiliency, such as Rodriguez,
whose adventure was almost cut short at the outset.
In Season 2, which kicks off Monday, July 13, a new batch
of celebs takes on Grylls’ outdoor gauntlet – actors Ed
Helms, Kate Winslet, Michelle Rodriguez, Kate Hudson,
James Marsden, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Michael B.
Jordan and Super Bowl MVP quarterback Drew Brees
– all of whom, indicates Grylls, were newbies to the
survivalist experience.
“She almost had a really bad parachuting accident
when we jumped into the Nevada desert together,”
Grylls says. “She crashed into the side of a cliff and
was left dangling. By the grace of God, she got away
with some cuts and grazes and she just shrugged it off
and was keen to get going. An amazingly tough girl but
vulnerable and honest as well. A very powerful combo.”
And still others faced down mortal fears, such as
Marsden with his fear of heights.
“I so admired his courage to keep going even when
at his very limits of his fears,” Grylls says. “He was an
inspiring man all round.”
“But they all had a palpable determination to push
themselves to their limits,” he says. “The amazing part for
me is seeing how they grow and change as the journey
progresses. By the end there were some real wilderness
warriors emerging.”
In the end, all wound up with a few cuts and scrapes
– “It is signature DNA of the show, a memory of
their adventure,” Grylls says – and all came away
empowered. Some may even have been converted to
bonafide outdoorsmen and women.
One proved to be Brees, who leapt onto the back of a
crocodile while he and Grylls were trying to catch dinner.
Grylls was impressed by his “speed, intensity and courage
in a few big moments.”
“It is when we get really pushed that we really grow,”
Grylls says. “This season took some of the biggest stars
in the world to their very edge and it is powerful to see.”

While at press time, the final voting
count for MLB’s 86th All-Star Game
had yet to be tallied, barring an
injury, Cincinnati Reds third baseman
Todd Frazier again should be on
the National League roster. Fox is
carrying the Midsummer Classic
Tuesday, July 14, from Frazier’s home
stadium, Great American Ball Park in
Cincinnati.
If that’s not enough, the Reds’ top
offensive producer this season could
potentially participate in ESPN’s
Home Run Derby on Monday. Later
in the week, the Reds will host their
cross-state rivals, the Cleveland
Indians, on Saturday, July 18, on Fox
Sports 1.
Frazier is having a heck of year, yet
trailed the St. Louis Cardinals’ Matt
Carpenter in All-Star voting at third.
Toward the end of June, Frazier
led or was among the leaders for
third baseman in many categories,
including home runs, RBIs, runs
scored and on-base percentage.
The Reds began the season as
potential contenders in the NL Central
but due to injuries and some turnover
on their pitching staff, have fallen off.
Frazier has been one of their shining
stars and offensive leaders.

Frazier
Now in his fifth season with the
Reds, Frazier is emerging as one of
baseball’s best at the hot corner. He’s
accustomed to winning, going all the
way back to a Little League World
Series title in 1998. That same year
in a “Google It” moment, he appeared
at Yankee Stadium standing next
to Derek Jeter during the National
Anthem.

“Jurassic World”
Dinosaurs go dining again
Welcome back to Jurassic Park ... only now, it’s Jurassic World.
Two sequels and more than 20 years after the original cinematic trip to the
turf created by novelist Michael Crichton and brought to life by director Steven
Spielberg, the modern attraction where DNA-spawned dinosaurs roam is getting
an upgrade. And anyone who knows anything about the franchise knows to
anticipate more of the things mankind shouldn’t mess with.
With Spielberg still on board as an executive producer, “Jurassic World” supplies
pretty much what anyone would expect in comparison to the original – louder
mayhem and better special effects – but ultimately, it’s less filling. For all that can
be done technically now, it’s tough to create the complete Spielberg brand of
movie magic unless Spielberg actually is calling all the shots, and so it is here.
That said, if all you’re seeking is another thrill ride through a modern land of
cloned dinos, “Jurassic World” is that. Bryce Dallas Howard plays a deputy of the
park’s current owner, who wants something new to keep the public interested
in coming to the place (also named Isla Nublar, which the “Jurassic” faithful will
know). Enter B.D. Wong, back in his “Jurassic Park” role as a scientist who now
comes up with the new hybrid Indominus Rex.
Anybody want to place a bet on how long it will take before that creation gets to
run rampant, imperiling anyone and everyone within arm’s, tail’s or jaw’s reach?
Put it this way: After the typically tranquil build-up, “Jurassic World” gets down
to the business moviegoers came to see, and the effects team does another
seamless job providing the visual excitement.
One of the biggest beneficiaries of that is Chris Pratt, adding his nowtrademarked left-of-center humor as a “dinosaur whisperer” of sorts, able to
exude a certain amount of control over the otherwise fearsome remnants of the
prehistoric past. “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” alum Vincent D’Onofrio also is
notable among the new stars as a would-be commander of dinos-as-soldiers, as
if such an army would ever happen.
Have we been here before? Well, of course we have, but it’s been a sufficient
amount of time that what “Jurassic World” puts forth seems relatively fresh again.
Director Colin Trevorrow and the writers know not to stray too far from the proven
recipe, and 3D also helps in keeping the jolts meaningful.
That’s really what you want from “Jurassic World” ... and since it delivers those
effectively, that park is still a good place to visit, though you most surely wouldn’t
want to live there.
