The John McNicholas Foundation Hosts
Ricobene's Night
May is Brain Tumor Awareness Month
On Wednesday May 18, 2016 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. the John McNicholas Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation will host Ricobene's Night at 252 West 26th Street,
312-225-5555.
John was just a sophomore at St. Rita, looking forward to the start of the baseball
season when a malignant inoperable brain tumor was diagnosed in April of 2010.
Though he fought a courageous battle, he died the following January 2011. Through
their grief his parents started this foundation in his memory to raise money to fund
research to a grossly underfunded segment of pediatric cancers. Please visit
www.livelikejohn.org to learn more.
Today, children diagnosed with brain cancer are treated with the same drugs and
therapies that existed 30 years ago; there have been no new advancements. With the
“Bench to Bedside” program, the John McNicholas Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation is setting out to change that.
In 2015, the foundation provided $500,000 to fund a research team of the best &
brightest minds in the field. To date the foundation has raised over $700,000.00.
Every dollar goes to research!!!!
This dream team of doctors and researchers is committed to studying high-grade
gliomas - the deadliest and most common form of brain tumor. With a multi-disciplinary approach, these doctors cover the entire range of the research process - from
extracting tissue samples and developing new therapies, to exploring novel delivery
techniques that are safer and more effective for children. These doctors are leading
the charge on new therapies and treatment options, and will bring their best findings
to our children's bedsides through life-changing clinical trials.
In order to maintain this aggressive approach, the John McNicholas Pediatric Brain
Tumor Foundation must raise another $500,000 in 2016. This is just one of a host of
fundraisers that is helping the “Bench to Bedside” initiative. Please visit www.live
likejohn.org to learn more.
All we need is your Ricobene’s receipt. When ordering say this is for the John
McNicholas Brain Tumor Foundation fundraiser. Take the evening off from cooking
and come have dinner at Ricobene’s. A percentage of all proceeds/receipts collected
will go to the John McNicholas Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. If you are unable
to come out, you can also place an order for delivery or pick up, just mention the
Foundation and we will get the credit.
Eat great food and help make a difference!! As always thank you for your continued support for a very worthwhile cause.
Local Program Assists International
Nurses to Attain Licensure in the U.S.
Internationally educated nurses (IEN's) here in the United States face many challenges including a lack of English proficiency, unclear information about the licensing system, difficulties in obtaining credentials from their home countries, a test
format that is often very different from the format used in home countries, testing
deadlines requiring passing the NCLEX within 3 years of application, and financial
constraints. The licensure process could take several years for many IENs given the
barriers.
To assist IENs in addressing these challenges, the Chicago Bilingual Nurse Consortium, (CBNC), a 501(c)(3) was founded in 2002. CBNC's mission is to increase
the number of internationally educated nurses for practice as bilingual bicultural
nurses in metropolitan Chicago and surrounding communities through advocacy,
education and supportive services. The focus is to prepare IENs to achieve licensure in Illinois.
CBNC is totally grant and donation funded. The organization will be holding an
Evening of Celebration at the Polo Café Eagle Room, 3322 South Morgan St. on
May 12th from 5:30-8:30PM with the sounds of Cuardes Classicas and DJ Sam
Samboa to benefit the mission of the group. Five of the IEN's will be honored at the
event and will also include many silent auction and raffle prizes. Please call 312-5672065 for further information.
• Wear a hat, protective clothing and sunscreens to reduce sunlight exposure,
particularly between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
• Use a sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays, is water proof and has
at least a sun protection factor (SPF) rating of 30 or higher. Also apply the
sunscreen at least 20 minutes before you leave the house.
• Start with at least enough sunscreen to fill a shot glass and be sure to re-apply
every two hours, especially after swimming perspiring, or showering.
• A tanning booth is NOT a safe alternative to sun exposure.
• While fairer-skinned people are more vulnerable to the damaging effects of sunlight, darker-skinned people are by no means immune from them.
• Do periodic self-checks for changes in your skin including new or changing
moles or lesions that are not healing.
Ping Tom Park Cleanup
Over 20 students and residents came out to clean up Ping Tom Park the morning of Saturday, April 23. The park was littered with beer cans, bottles, food
containers, diapers, and even a car bumper on the far north side of the field
house! This park and other parks across Chicagoland hosted clean ups in celebration of Earth Day. This park advisory council will host another clean up for
Chicago River Day on May 14, specifically focused on cleaning up the litter accumulation along the riverfront. Register early at http://bit.ly/1y4bDID for a
free t-shirt.
St. George Award Recipients
On April 24th Recipients of the St. George Award attended a Benefit to support
the Catholic Committee on Scouting in the Chicagoland area. The St. George award
is presented to scout leaders who are religious emblems counselors or facilitators for
Catholic faith based programs that allows Cub Scout and Boy Scout age boys to
earn religious medals. The event also served as an annual benefit to raise funds to
send two Boy Scouts to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico to participate in
the week long St. George Trek.
The St. George Trek is a biennial, high adventure, backpacking retreat program
for Catholic Scouts and Venturers administered by the National Catholic Council
on Scouting. Dinner was followed by a silent auction and fellowship.

Applications NOW OPEN for Chicago
High School Teens Seeking Paid Summer
Apprenticeship and Internship Programs
with After School Matters®
10,000 Program Opportunities Available to Chicago Teens this Summer
After School Matters® is now accepting teen applications for its summer 2016 program session. Nearly 600 programs in the arts, communications, science, sports and technology will be offered at locations throughout Chicago including at Chicago Public
Schools, Chicago Park District and Chicago Public Library locations, community organizations, local businesses and downtown in Millennium Park and at the Gallery 37 Center
for the Arts. Advanced programs will begin the week of June 27, and all others will begin
the week of July 5. Teens can search and apply for summer programs online at
afterschoolmatters.org.
In total, 10,000 paid apprenticeship and internship opportunities will be available to
Chicago high school teens this summer through After School Matters. Summer programs
will meet approximately four-to-five days a week for three-to-four hours per day over the
course of six-to-seven weeks. Participating teens are eligible to earn a stipend based on
the skill level of the program. Teens can earn up to $725 for an advanced apprenticeship
program, up to $420 for an apprenticeship program, and up to $336 for a pre-apprenticeship program. Teen interns will earn $10.50 per hour.
“This summer, After School Matters is providing more opportunities in a single program session than ever before,” said Mary Ellen Caron, chief executive officer. “Growth is crucial, because more than 20,000 teens applied for our programs last summer alone. Chicago's youth deserve a safe, productive and inspiring summer program
experience that will prepare them for college, careers and beyond. When we invest in
young people, we tell them that they matter.”
After School Matters® unique programs offer teens an opportunity to explore and
develop their talents, while gaining critical skills for their futures. Data has shown that
teens who participate in After School Matters programs have higher Freshmen On-Track
rates, improved school-day attendance and higher high school graduation rates than their
peers.
A few of the exciting programs offered throughout the city this summer include:
The Business of Music - Arts
Location: Chicago West Community Music Center, East Garfield Park. The Business
of Music gives teens insight and hands-on experience with the music industry by using
recording equipment, developing scripts, writing songs and training in voiceovers.
Additionally, this program teaches teens essential business skills to prepare for college
and careers after high school.
Creative Writing, Downtown - Communications
Location: Gallery 37 Center for the Arts, Loop. Teens hone their writing skills and
explore several different narrative forms in this advanced program. Creative Writing
gives teens an environment to express themselves and produce stories of publishable
quality. Teens will have the chance to read their work at various locations throughout
Chicago.
Digital Imagination - Tech
Location: Ray and Joan Kroc Salvation Army Center, West Pullman. This program
allows teens to explore various digital media technologies including music recording,
website creation, graphic design and photo/video/audio editing. Through their exploration, teens will learn digital presentation, team leadership and project management
skills as they work together to create a group video project.
Girls in the Game - Sports
Location: Union Park, Near West Side. Girls in the Game brings a diverse group of
young women together to learn the fundamentals of sports, fitness, nutrition and coaching to empower the teens to be leaders in their community and mentors for younger girls.
The teen counselors then work with adult staff to lead clinics on more than 30 different
sports, fitness, health and leadership topics for youth.
Leaps and Bounds - Science
Location: Gary Comer Youth Center, Greater Grand Crossing. The Leaps and Bounds
program prepares teens to make the leap into post-secondary life by building the skills
and confidence necessary to have a successful transition into their first year of college.
This program focuses on ensuring academic success, developing leadership skills and
enhancing computer literacy. The program will hold several career awareness workshops
for teens over the summer.
Urban Teen Growers: Chicago Botanic Garden - Science
Location: Gallery 37 Center for the Arts, Loop. Teens looking to dig into something
new will enjoy the hands-on activities and field trips to gardens around Chicago with
Urban Teen Growers. During the program, teens will grow fruits and vegetables on the
Gallery 37 Center for the Arts rooftop and inside the Urban Garden Lab, while learning
about urban food growing, cooking delicious meals and practicing environmental sustainability.
“You Got Served” Culinary Program - Arts
Location: NEBC Employment Resource Services, Austin. “You Got Served” is a culinary program for young men who are looking to gain skills in gourmet food prep, presentation and service. Teens will learn the fundamentals of food styling, plating and creating recipes while working in a professional-level kitchen.
To learn more about programs in a particular community area, please reach out to After
School Matters® Communications Department.
Teens can search and apply for Summer 2016 programs at afterschoolmatters.org.
Current Chicago public high school students who are Chicago residents, including rising
freshmen and just-graduated seniors, are eligible. Some spots are available to non-CPS
high school students. As part of the application process, teens will interview with program instructors to discuss and present their skills and interests. Chicago teens are
encouraged to apply early, as program opportunities fill up quickly. For questions about
programs and applications, call 312-742-4182 or email applications@afterschoolmatters
