From child prodigy to superstar
Child prodigy • World star • Abbé
The Liszt House Raiding is the historical birthplace of Franz Liszt.
He was born in this house on 22nd October 1811. His father Adam
Liszt administered the sheep farm of the family Esterházy which
has been in their possession since 1805. The house, built of stone
and wooden shingles, comprised six rooms, a kitchen, a storage
room and a wine press house. The birthplace of Franz Liszt was not
a simple cottage but a remaining building of a much larger complex
which was also described as a “fort”. This part of the early baroque
fort was certainly the most impressive house in the small village of
600 inhabitants.
Today the remaining building of the former estate functions as
a museum which offers an ideal setting to portray the roots and
career of Franz Liszt. Next to the idyllic birth house, a modern and
acoustically outstanding concert hall was established in 2006 which
is the home to the Liszt Festival Raiding.
The exhibition presents Franz Liszt on a very intimate level. Next
to his origins and his relationship to his birthplace Raiding, the
exhibition also focuses on his time of being a child prodigy in
Vienna and Paris. His teachers and patrons had a significant musical
and also general influence on his life and became lifelong role
models. The exhibition provides insights into his profound religious
beliefs during his adolescent years, into his romantic relationships
with Marie d’Agoult and Caryolne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein and into his
remaining years as Abbé Liszt.
Various exhibits exemplify his complex personality, including a
replica of the baptismal fond which was used for Liszt’s baptism, a
piano by Erard which was played by Liszt himself, the travel altar of
Franz Liszt, his soutane collar as well as a number of letters written
by his partner Carolyne where she reports on her weddings plans
with Liszt and on the following failure of their plans.
Blue Salon and concert hall
The Blue Salon was originally located in Schottenhof, Vienna
and functioned as Liszt’s lodging during his stays in Vienna.
Being reconstructed in the adjacent concert house, the room still
functions as a treasure chamber of souvenirs and cult objects and
offers the possibility to encounter Franz Liszt as a superstar and
business man. Specific areas such as marketing, merchandising and
star cult have already been part of the virtuosity in the 19th century.
The salon culture has been reinterpreted in the form of a Lisztlounge by designer Rainer Mutsch. The guided tours in the Liszt
House conclude with listening to a musical recording in the concert
hall of the Liszt festival Raiding (in case that the hall is accessible).

HAYDN HOUSE EISENSTADT
Joseph Haydn, his life, his music

exhibitio
The Haydn House Eisenstadt is the former residence of the
renowned composer. In his position as music director at the Esterházy court, Joseph Haydn acquired the baroque house in 1766 and
lived there for twelve years.
The private life and creative work of Joseph Haydn is so comprehensively portrayed in the exhibition like nowhere else. The rooms are
furnished with original furniture of Haydn’s time; the original wall
paintings were uncovered by professional restorers.
Haydn’s musical opus can be experienced by his piano music, his
string quartets and the great oratories ‚The creation‘ and ‘The seasons‘. Next to original portraits of Joseph Haydn, letters and scores,
the exhibition also displays a fortepiano built by Anton Walter in
1780 or a letter of his mistress to their presumably mutual son.
Guided tours (Permanent and special exhibition)
The tour guides slip into the role of Mrs. Haydn. For groups with
advance reservation.

The first unfulfilled love, the betrayed spouse, a secret mistress,
female soul mates, pianists and dilettantes, singers and society
ladies, princesses and patronesses - women of all origins, ranks
and professions played a significant role in Haydn’s life. The
exhibition portrays 12 women who crossed Haydn’s path, who were
emotionally significant to him and who promoted his social rank.
The presentation ranges from two daughters of a wig maker named
Therese and Maria Anna Keller to Empress Maria Theresia. About 150
exhibits by national and international lenders support the design of
the exhibition. Free audio guides offer additional information.

Bürgerspitalgasse (Osterwiese, hinter der Bank Burgenland), 7000 Eisenstadt
When Joseph Haydn and his wife Maria Anna moved to Eisenstadt
and purchased a house, they also acquired a kitchen garden.
Nowadays this garden offers a treasure of wisdoms and baroque
recipes which are waiting for to be rediscovered. Beginning in spring
and lasting until late autumn the place offers a lush garden oasis in
the centre of the town. It provides a wide range of almost forgotten
vegetables, unfamiliar herbs and eatable flowers. Lilies, irises and
roses have been used in the production of fragrant carpets and
perfumes. Marigold salve and rose powder still nourish the skin in
present times. From May to September the garden offers an ideal
place for plant lovers to explore its baroque treasures.
