MESSAGE FROM
THE GROUP
MANAGING
DIRECTOR
With the first quarter of 2009 behind us,
we now have the opportunity to better
judge the impact of the global recession on
the Jebsen Group.
As we are very diversified in our product
mix, the effects of the market slowdown
have not been identical throughout the
Group. This in itself is the strength of our
unique business model, and our four core
business units Consumer, Industrial, Beverage
and Luxury therefore remain the very
foundation of our Group.
Looking at some of our key business
activities specifically: Camera sales have not
been spared from the recession, but the
unique position of Hong Kong as a significant
destination for Mainland tourists has
tempered the effects. To our advantage, watch sales have been a beneficiary
of the same phenomenon.
Blue Girl Beer continues to grow strongly in Hong Kong and we maintain
our growth strategy for this brand in Taiwan and China. Meanwhile,
wine sales have seen a more pronounced impact as there have been
less western visitors to Hong Kong and China.
Our motor business has been substantially affected by both the economic
slowdown and consumption tax increase in China, but we are hopeful that
the strong brand and unique products of Porsche will allow us to make up
lost ground over the coming months.

and more...
The industrial business is experiencing a slowdown for new projects.
However, the large stimulus package of the Chinese Government should
allow renewed growth by the end of the year.
World events continue to cast a shadow over the business environment.
Drawing on our first quarter performance, it seems unlikely that we will
enjoy a fast and substantial recovery in our markets and things may actually
get worse before they get better. Our emphasis must therefore be on
cost control and risk management.
Nonetheless, as this is not the first recession the Group has had to deal
with, nor indeed will it be the last, we know we have the ability to weather
the storm as long as members of our Group continue in their respective
efforts in this regard.

To address the global warming and pollution
issue, collective actions are being taken to

highly encouraged to replace fossil fuel.
Examples of such applications are:

• Solar PV panel system for power

• Wind turbine system for power

SISTER COMPANY VISITS SPONSORED SCHOOLS
FOR PLANTATION CHILDREN
The children sang some songs and performed
a flower dance for the visitors.
Eager eyes peered through the classroom door as the group of
visitors walked in.
In unison, the children, in perfect English, greeted sister group Jebsen
& Jessen (SEA) Chairman Heinrich Jessen and General Manager for
Operations Jakob Helms of member company JJ-Lurgi Engineering.
Neatly dressed in yellow and green uniforms, these children looked
like ordinary students. They are in fact the most fortunate ones
among thousands of plantation children, being given the opportunity
to attend a school established by Humana/Borneo Child Aid Society,
a non-profit organisation based in Sabah, Malaysia.
JJ-Lurgi Engineering has been supporting two schools at Nam Hing
Estate and Madai, near Tawau since 2006 with a yearly contribution
of RM36,000.

During the two-day visit from Feb 24-25, Mr Jessen and Mr Helms
also went for a graduation ceremony in Madai, a short visit to a
school in Balung Eco Plantation and a boat trip from Semporna to
Bumbum Island to witness a new school under construction and
learn more about the people and children in the island.
To date, there are 105 schools with some of the schools located
deep inside the oil palm plantations, providing basic education to
about 8,000 students comprising local children without legal
documents and stateless children of Indonesian and Philippine origins.
"Without such efforts, they would have had nothing but poverty in
sight and I personally feel pleased and proud that we can be part
of such efforts," said Mr Helms.
