CO2 Laser Marker
World’s first 3-Axis control CO2 laser marker
Introducing an evolution from 2-axis marking to 3-axis marking… the KEYENCE ML-Z9500 Series
The ML-Z’s revolutionary design produces marks in the X, Y, and Z axis, bringing unmatched
quality and precision to products of any shape and size.

Z-axis scanner
3-Axis
The newly developed 3-axis
simultaneous laser control system
enables not only traditional X-axis
and Y-axis laser controls but also
Z-axis control. The ML-Z not only
creates precise marking and
reduced deformation on targets
with varying surface shape and
height, but also improves the
accuracy of marks on large flat
surfaces as well. This dramatic
improvement in marking quality
puts the ML-Z years ahead of the
competition.

3-Axis control dramatically improves
the accuracy of marking on flat surfaces
A uniform focal point over the 42 mm range keeps the character size constant

The XYZ 3-Axis simultaneous laser
control system locates the ideal marking
distance and spot diameter, ensuring
character integrity will never be
compromised.

Spot diameter is kept
uniform over the entire area
Conventional model
ML-Z
Conventionally, the spot size at the centre and the
edge of the marking area were different due to the
artificial plane created by the fθ lens. ML-Z has
solved this problem with 3-Axis laser control.
High accuracy marking on a flat surface is
guaranteed because of the uniform spot size.

Uniform character size and

position
Unlike conventional beam spot defocusing
techniques, the ML-Z9500 Series can mark thin,
thick, shallow or deep characters without changing
coordinates or character sizes. This means that the
ML-Z can mark uniform defocused characters at
any point within the marking area.

The ML-Z9500 Series locates the focal length

no need to design a complex mechanism to
adjust the height of the marker during product

A perfect balance
of precision and
wide area marking
Typical wide area marking applications
require either a multiple marker
installation, or an X/Y stage to index the
target. The ML-Z’s 300 mm marking
area reduces installation costs by
eliminating the need for multiple
marking heads and mechanical index
devices. The variable focal range and
spot size also helps to keep marking
precision equal throughout the entire
marking field.

Precise 3-Axis marking
The 3-axis control of the ML-Z Series enables sharp
marking on surfaces that typically cause problems for
conventional laser markers. Crisp, clear characters can
be printed on stepped surfaces, inclines, cylinders, cones
and more. Three axis marking makes distorted, chipped,
or blurred characters a thing of the past!

Outstanding accuracy for cutting,
boring and peeling
3-Axis laser processing minimizes deformation and displacement.
Fine cuts can be made over a
wide area with high accuracy
The ML-Z9500 Series keeps the spot shape constant with
3-Axis laser control. With the spot size held uniform, cuts
and peels can be made without deformation or
displacement of the pattern.
ML-Z
Conventional
model
The size and shape vary between
the centre and the edge of the area.
Size and shape variations between the centre
and the edge of the area have been minimized.
Lean laser processing
The ML-Z9500 Series employs a highly focused laser beam
to ensure stable energy density throughout the cut. Deep or
rounded cuts are difficult for conventional systems,
however the ML-Z’s large focal range (±21 mm)
guarantees a clean cut on thick targets.
ML-Z
Conventional
model
The energy density decreased at the edges.
The uniform energy density enables lean laser
processing.
Warm-up function
Most marking systems will experience some character
variation directly after powering the laser. The ML-Z9500
Series uses a warm up function to ensure the laser has
reached it’s stable operating power, eliminating marking
variations after startup.

Fast moving production lines
High-speed 30 W marking capabilities
30 W
Superior marking control on
moving targets
The ML-Z9500 Series precisely marks characters on rapidly
moving flat or curved surfaces. The deep focal range of the
ML-Z means that there’s no need for adjustment for varying
product sizes, reducing overall tact time. This allows the
maximum performance of the marking head to be utilised in a
wide range of applications.
Contribution to improved
productivity
The synergy between the high power of 30 W and the newly
developed ultra-high-speed scanner improves productivity.
These two features guarantee the ML-Z is ready to meet current
and future application requirements without complications.

Thin laser beam
No displaced or
worn characters
Best for electronic components
The thin laser beam is best for marking in narrow
spaces such as on electronic components. The
3-Axis laser control corrects distortion and
displacement that may be caused by a slight
misalignment that occurred during installation.
The thin laser beam enables uniform and
precisely positioned marking not only at the
centre but also at the edges of the marking area.

Mounting Position Correction
Distortion problems associated with the
properties of the Fθ lens of conventional
systems have been eliminated, so
characters stay clear and crisp over the
entire marking area.

The wavelength of the laser beam has been
shortened from 10.6 to 9.3 µm in order to match the

Characters to be marked or the marking area can be
viewed by scanning the two red laser beams at high

■ Real-time adjustment of the Z-axis position ■ Terminal block monitor and simulation
There are three methods for inputting a real-time
adjustment value into the ML-Z:
ON/OFF status of I/O signals to the controller can be
verified with the terminal block monitor.
1. Selection
■ Communication history display
Manually enter the Z-axis data by focusing the guide
laser on the target surface.
2. Analogue
Receive data from an analogue device that measures the
distance to a target surface.
3. Strobe
Adjust to a preset fixed position based on a discrete
input from an external device.
■ Intersection elimination function
The intersection elimination function specifies the
width necessary to skip over areas that may be
marked twice on characters or logos.
■ Individual workpiece offset (Pallet marking)
When marking many pieces over a wide area, the
position, marking status, and angle of the targets can
be set individually.
The history of commands sent to and from the
RS-232C port can be quickly inspected
■ Input time adjustment
The time necessary for receipt of a trigger input can
be manually adjusted to avoid problems with noise or
chattering
■ Error history management
The error history management records the history of
errors.
■ Batch transmission of configuration files
Files created on a personal computer can be
transmitted to the controller collectively.

Laser irradiation
check
Upon receiving the analogue output form the
LK-G, the ML-Z Series detects the change in
distance to a workpiece in real time and matches
the focal point to the changing distance. This
makes the combination LK-G and ML-Z Series
a good match for roller or feeder applications.
The BL Series compares the barcode
information read with the barcode information
registered in the main system. The detected
barcode can be automatically fed into the
ML-Z and then marked in real time.
The FT Series measures the light intensity of
infra-red radiation and detects whether laser
irradiation is present. The ambient light
resistant FT Series measures the radiation
from a remote location.
