50th YEAR REUNION -
SVHS CLASS OF
1937
A Different World, But in Many Ways the Best of Times
(Author Unknown)
School reunions can be a competitive sport. At early reunions,
classmates compete with each other about jobs and incomes; at the
25th, it's spouses and children. After that, they brag about their
grandchildren and vacation homes while regarding, with envy or glee,
classmates' waistlines, hairlines, wrinklelines.
It is said there are Three Ages of Women: youth, middle-age, and
haven't changed." But change is the name of the game. Consider:
Graduates of the Class of '37 were before the pill and the population
explosion which, inexplicably, went hand in hand—so to speak.
We were before television. Before penicillin, polio shots,
antibiotics and frisbees. Before frozen foods, nylon, dacron, Xerox,
Kinsey. We were before radar, fluorescent lights, credit cards and
ballpoint pens. For us,
time-sharing meant togetherness, not
computers; a chip meant a piece of wood; hardware meant hardware and
software wasn't a
word.
Female students were
forbidden
to wear slacks.
We were before
pantyhose and drip-dry clothes. Before ice makers and dishwashers,
clothes dryers, freezers and electric blankets. Before Hawaii and
Alaska became states. Before men wore long hair and earrings and women
wore
tuxedos.
We were before Leonard Bernstein, yogurt, Ann Landers, plastics,
hair dryers, the 40-hour week and the minimum wage. We got married
first and then lived together. How quaint can you be?
In our time,
closets were for clothes, not for coming out of,
and a
book about two young women living together in Europe could be called,
"Our Hearts Were Young and Gay." In those days bunnies were small
rabbits and rabbits were not Volkswagens. We were before Grandma Moses
and Frank Sinatra and cup-sizing for bras. We wore Peter Pan collars
and thought a deep cleavage was something butchers did.
We were before Batman, Grapes of Wrath, Rudolph the Red-nosed
Reindeer, Stuart Little and Snoopy, Before DDT and vitamin pills,
vodka (in the U.S.), and the white wine craze, disposable diapers,
Jeeps, the Jefferson Memorial and the Jefferson nickel.
When we were in school, pizzas, Cheerios, frozen orange juice,
instant coffee and McDonald's were unheard of. We thought fast food
was what you ate during Lent.
We were before Curious George, Citizen Kane and Chiquita Banana.
Before FM radio, tape recorders, electric typewriters, word
processors, Muzak, electronic music, disco dancing—and that's not all
bad.
In our day cigarette smoking was fashionable, grass was mowed, Coke
was something you drank and pot was something you cooked in. We were
before day-care centers, house-husbands, babysitters and computer
dating.
In 1937 American schools were not desegregated; blacks were not
allowed to play in the major leagues; and the D.A.R. (Daughters of the
American Revolution) would not allow Marian Anderson to sing in
Constitution Hall. In 1937 "Made in Japan" meant junk; and the term
"making out" referred to how you did on an exam.
In our time there were 5 and 10 cent stores where you could buy
things for 5 and 10 cents. For one nickel you could make a phone call,
or buy a Coke, or buy enough stamps to mail one letter and two
postcards. You could buy a new Chevy coupe for $650, but who could
afford that in in 1937? Nobody. A pity, too, because gas was less than
30 cents a gallon.
If anyone in those days had asked us to explain CIA, Ms, NATO, UFO,
NFL, SATs, JFK, BMW, ERA or lUD we would have said alphabet soup. We
were not before the difference between the sexes was discovered, but
we were before sex change. We just made do with what we had. And we
were the last generation that was so dumb as to think you needed a
husband to have a baby.

Fifty years - Where have they gone?
The first 25 years were spent raising our family and working to make
a living.
In 1961 Blaine'8 horseman's talent took us on many adventurous
trips. We raced Thoroughbred horses on major race tracks in the East
and Mideast. We learned how the very rich lived and saw how the very
poor struggled to exist.
In 1974 Blaine had a heart attack and retired from racing. We came
back to our beautiful Rocky Mountains—our family and friends—and the
green, green grass and peace and quiet of Star Valley.
Since 1974 we spend our winters in Phoenix, Ariz, and our summers at
home in Thayne, Wyo.
My birthday twin is Marjorie Burton Evans. We were born on March 25,
1919.
Count your garden by the flowers.
Never by leaves that fall.
Count your days by golden hours.
Don't remember clouds at all.
Count your nights by stars,
Not
shadows.
Count your live by smiles,
Not
tears.
And with joy on every birthday
Count your age by friends.
Not years.
12
IN SUMMING UP THE LAST FIFTY YEARS
HAVE YOU NOTICED?
Everything is farther away now than it used to be. It is twice as
far to the corner, and they've added a hill.
I've given up running for the bus; it leaves faster than it used
to. It seems to me they are making steps steeper than in the old
days.
Have you noticed the smaller print they use in the newspaper?
There is no sense asking anyone to read aloud; everyone speaks in
such a low voice that I can hardly hear them. The material in
clothes is getting so skimpy, especially around the waist and hips.
Even people are changing. They are so much younger than they used
to be when I was their age. On the other hand, people my own age are so
much older than I am. I ran into an old friend the other day and she had
aged so much she didn't recognize me!
I got to thinking about the poor
thing while I was combing my hair this morning, and in so doing, I glanced
at my reflection and, confound it, they don't even make good mirrors like
they used to.

SHORT RESUME OF "PERK'S" LIFE AS WRITTEN BY HIS WIDOW, CLEO
Perk and I met in Granger, Wyoming where we were both working for
Little America. We were married in Randolph, Utah. We soon moved from
Little America to Long Beach, California, where we lived until Perk
went into the Navy during the war. Two of our children were born in
Long Beach. After the war we moved to St. Anthony, Idaho and Perk
worked in the parts department for Frome Motor Co. Paul, our third
child, was born in St. Anthony. Our next move was to Molalla, where he
managed a parts store. Our fourth child was born here. We moved to
Anchorage, Alaska, where we spent a year and then went back to
Molalla. For the last 12 to 14 years of his life Perk worked in
Portland as a foreman for a big shipbuilding company.
Perk was very active in church affairs. He had been Branch
President, Elders Quorum president, and was High Priest group leader
when he
died.
Our two boys live close to me here in Molalla. One is on the police
force in Portland, and the other works as a lineman for Portland
General Electric Co. Both of our girls are married and live in
Washington near Seattle.
We have 12 grandchildren.

The note was as follows:
Dear Lee:

and was most rewarding to her.
(The above information was provided by Elaine's sister, Myrna. She
also submitted her favorite poem, as follows):
ELAINE WEBER BLAKELY
I don't know how to say it, but somehow it seems to me.
That maybe I am stationed where God wanted me to be.
That the little place I'm filling, is the reason for my birth.
And just to do the work I do. He sent me down on earth.
If God had wanted otherwise, I reckon He'd have made me
Just a little different, of a worse or better grade.
And since God knows and understands all things of land or sea,
I fancy that He placed me here, just where He wanted me.
Sometimes I get to thinking, as my labors I review.
That I should like a higher place with greater tasks to do.
But I come to the conclusion when the envying is stilled.
That the post to which God sent me, is the post he wanted filled.
So I plod along and struggle in the hope when day is through.
That I'm really necessary to the things God wants me to do.
And there isn't any service I can give which I should scorn,
For it may be just the reason God allowed me to be born.

graduated from high school in 1937.
He volunteered for
the service

He married Gertrude Merrell June 5, 1942. Their first home was in
