…… There were 170 priests from across the country attending the Association of Priests meeting last week. The average age was around 60,
with many being retired. So this was not a bunch of rebel-rousers at all.
The focus of the meeting was Keeping Alive the Vision of Vatican II. In
October we will be acknowledge the Opening Session of the Council.
Many people in our parishes know little of the Vatican Council, let alone
understand what it might mean to the Church of our time. Much of what
you hear from me in the coming year will be an attempt to ‘open up the
vision’ of the Council.
Issues we are concerned with have to do with the New Roman
Missal and how it is received by the People of God. A large number of
priests are not satisfied with the translation, mainly because it is difficult
to pray with the assembly.
We also looked at how we might support the LCWD, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. This is something I will spend
more time on in the near future.
We are also concerned with a new Rite of Infant Baptism that is
based upon the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. This would entail
adopting the custom of the early church of confirming infants at the time
of Baptism. We also called upon an exploration of the possibility of a revision of the current formal annulment process.
Finally, and perhaps the most important topic was building a
bridge between lay involvements. Vatican Council II’s document on Lumen Gentium as well as Gaudium et Spes describes a new relationship
between clergy and laity.
And so, back or maybe the first time, an understanding of documents of the Council.

General Directions: Families whose names begin with Letters A – P are to make one homemade pie or one pan of bars. Families whose names begin with letters Q – Z are to bring one
cake for the cakewalk. Each family is asked to bring 5 small items for the fish pond. It is very
important that everyone makes a pie/cake/bars and also prizes for the fish pond. The first person listed on each committee is the chairperson. Each chairperson will be sent instructions for
their committee's duties in the mail. Persons unable to work are to find their own replacements.
Some suggestions for substitutes are listed at the end of the assignment sheet, but there are
many other members of the parish who have not been assigned a job that you could also call.

t the request of Bishop Amos, the Faith Formation Office
is sponsoring a diocesan celebration for all couples who
are celebrating fifty years of marriage this year. This celebration is also for couples who were unable to attend last
year’s celebration.
A Mass and informal reception will be held at St. John
Vianney’s Catholic Church in Bettendorf on Sunday, October
14, 2012 at 2 p.m.
If you are celebrating your 50th Anniversary this year, or if you celebrated that
anniversary last year and were unable to attend, please notify St. Mary Tipton

BREAKING OPEN THE WORD:
J
esus said to the crowds:
"This is how it is with the kingdom of God;
it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the
land
and would sleep and rise night and day
and through it all the seed would sprout and
grow,
he knows not how.
Of its own accord the land yields fruit,
first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in
the ear.
And when the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle
at once,
for the harvest has come."
He said,
"To what shall we compare the kingdom of God,
or what parable can we use for it?
It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in
the ground,
is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth.
But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants
and puts forth large branches,
so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade."
With many such parables
he spoke the word to them as they were able to understand it.
Without parables he did not speak to them,
but to his own disciples he explained everything in private.
