C HAPTER 1 Yo-Yo Afghans Y O -Y O A FGHANS S ECTION 1 Yo-Yo Afghans General Instructions Yo-yo's are one round of double crochet that can be crocheted together in a hexagon based pattern to make lots of different items, including afghans. They're great for using up yarn scraps, but you can also make hexagon-graphed, join-asyou-go patterns ! I think you'll be surprised at how many different looks can be achieved using this method. Basic Yo-Yo Pattern With a size I hook & worsted weight yarn, each yo-yo uses about 62" of yarn and is about 1 3/4" across. Ch 4, join with a sl st to the first ch to form a ring. Y O -Y O A FGHANS Crochet Along's September-October 2000 Project Round 1: Ch 3 to count as the first dc, work 11 more dc in the ring. Fasten off. Joining Methods These joining methods are hexagon-based. Every yo-yo (except those on the ends and sides of the afghan) will be joined to six other yo-yo's at two points each. Work over yarn ends whenever possible. Flat Braid Joining (This method produces a textured, tighter joining.) Net Stitch Joining (This method produces a looser, lacier joining.) 2 Hexagon Joining (Use either the flat braid or net stitch joining to make hexagon motifs or a hexagon afghan.) Graphed Yo-Yo Afghans A design can be worked into a yo-yo afghan, if desired. Happy Crocheting! 3 Y O -Y O A FGHANS S ECTION 2 Flat Braid Yo-Yo Joining First yo-yo: Join main color with a sc in any dc, ch 3, (sc in the next dc, ch 3) 11 times; join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off. Second yo-yo: Join main color with a sc in any dc, (ch 3, sc in the next dc) 9 times; ch 2, drop stitch from hook, insert hook through the to of any ch-3 sp on the first yo-yo... 4 Continuing second yo-yo: Pick up dropped stitch and pull through the loop, ch 1... Continuing second yo-yo: Ch 2, drop stitch from hook, insert hook from the top into the next ch-3 sp on the first yoyo... Continuing second yo-yo: Sc in the next dc on the second yo-yo... Continuing second yo-yo: Pick up dropped stitch and pull through the loop, ch 1... 5 Continuing second yo-yo: Sc in the next dc on the second yo-yo, ch 3; join with a sl st to the first sc on the second yo-yo. Fasten off. Continue joining yo-yo's until you have the width desired. The second row of yo-yo's will begin being joined in loops 1-4. (When joining a yo-yo in four places, work 7 ch-3 loops on the yo-yo, then join to each of the 4 indicated loops.) Third yo-yo: Join in loops 1 and 2 as done with the second yo-yo. 6 Join the second yo-yo of the second row in loops 1-6. (When joining a yo-yo in six places, work 5 ch-3 loops on the yo-yo, then join to each of the 6 indicated loops.) Join the third yo-yo of the second row in loops 1-6. 7 Continue joining yo-yo's until you have one less than the first row. The third row of yo- yo's will begin being joined in loops 1-2. Join the second yo-yo of the third row in loops 1-6. 8 Continue adding yo-yo's to the third row as you did for the second row. Join the first yo- yo of row 4 to loops 1-4. Continue in this pattern until the afghan is the desired length. Happy Crocheting! 9 Y O -Y O A FGHANS S ECTION 3 Hexagon Yo-Yo Joining Use either the flat braid joining method or the net stitch joining method to join these hexagons. Step 1: Center yo-yo Step 2: Join second yo-yo to center yo-yo in two places. The numbers indicate where the next yo-yo will be joined. 10 Step 5: Numbers indicate joining of the next yo-yo. Step 3: Numbers indicate joining of the next yo-yo. Step 4: Numbers indicate joining of the next yo-yo. Step 6: Numbers indicate joining of the last yo-yo on the first round. 11 Step 7: This is the completed "flower" for the Flower Power afghan. Numbers indicate joining of first yo-yo on the 2nd round for the Yo-Yo Hexagon Baby afghan. Step 9: Numbers indicate joining of the next yo-yo. Continue joining in this manner until size desired. Happy Crocheting! Step 8: Numbers indicate joining of the next yo-yo. 12 Y O -Y O A FGHANS S ECTION 4 Net Stitch Yo-Yo Joining First yo-yo: Join main color with a sc in any dc, ch 3, (sc in the next dc, ch 3) 11 times; join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off. Second yo-yo: Join main color with a sc in any dc, (ch 3, sc in the next dc) 9 times; ch 1, sc (inserting hook from the bottom) in any ch-3 sp on the first yo-yo... 13 Continuing second yo-yo: Ch 1, sc in the next dc on the second yo-yo... Continuing second yo-yo: Ch 1, sc in the next dc on the second yo-yo, ch 3; join with a sl st to the first sc on the second yo-yo. Fasten off. Continuing second yo-yo: Ch 1, sc in the next ch-3 sp on the first yo-yo... 14 Third yo-yo: Join in loops 1 and 2 as done with the second yo-yo. Join the second yo-yo of the second row in loops 1-6. (When joining a yo-yo in six places, work 5 ch-3 loops on the yo-yo, then join to each of the 6 indicated loops.) Continue joining yo-yo's until you have the width desired. The second row of yo-yo's will begin being joined in loops 1-4. (When joining a yo-yo in four places, work 7 ch-3 loops on the yo-yo, then join to each of the 4 indicated loops.) 15 Continue joining yo-yo's until you have one less than the first row. The third row of yo- yo's will begin being joined in loops 1-2 Join the second yo-yo of the third row in loops 1-6. 16 Continue adding yo-yo's to the third row as you did for the second row. Join the first yo- yo of row 4 to loops 1-4. Continue in this pattern until the afghan is the desired length. The scrap yarn "flowers" are joined individually in a coordinating color first, then the "flowers" are joined with a main color yo-yo. Materials: Yarn: Worsted weight acrylic Joining yarn: About 32-40 ounces black, white or off white worsted weight acrylic Hook: Size I Finished size: As graphed, about 50" wide and 72" long, but is easily adjustable by adjusting number of "flower" rows. Joining method: Make 53 hexagon "flowers" using the net stitch joining method and a coordinating color yarn (not the main color) for joining. Then join the flowers as in the graph with yo-yo's crocheted in the main color, then edged and joined with the main color using the net stitch method. 18 Edging: Using size J hook and main color, work 2 sc in each unjoined ch-3 sp around the outside of the afghan. The yo-yo's are not made in advance. After crocheting each yo-yo, do not finish off...instead, continue using the same yarn to edge and join each yo-yo, working according to the graph. Materials: Worsted weight acrylic (I'm not real sure about the amounts yet, as this afghan is in progress. I'm guesstimating about 32 - 40 ounces of a buff color, 24 ounces of dark green, 16 ounces of burgundy and 4 ounces of brown for the afghan.) Hook: Size I Finished size: As graphed, afghan - about 50" wide x 75" long; tree skirt - about 48" diameter at widest points Number of yo-yo's used: (Do not make yo-yo's in advance) Afghan - 718 (442 buff, 160 green, 100 burgundy, 16 brown) P RIMITIVE P INES Y O -Y O A FGHAN & C HRISTMAS T REE S KIRT Designed by Priscilla Hewitt Copyright © 2000 Priscilla’s Crochet Tree skirt - 390 (210 buff, 60 green, 114 burgundy, 6 brown.)
