D itty Bag the June 2015 Volume 47 – Number 6 Lake Canyon Yacht Club, Canyon Lake, Texas Commodore’s Report B www. lcyc.net Welcome NewMembers Bob Wickman e care what you wish for! As I write this, the heavens have opened and we are receiving a month’s worth of rain in a weekend. The lake is rising very fast (maybe too fast), but thankfully, our predecessors designed our club to handle most any eventuality. And let's take a look at all of the good things happening around us at LCYC. The pool has been resurfaced and looks great. Our hard-working maintenance crew under the leadership of Property Manager Josef Scherm and Docks and Grounds bosses Bruce Dunn and Joe O’Brien have the grounds and marina looking sharp. The Corps of Engineers inspector from Fort Worth was duly impressed. We have a newly installed electronic surveillance and security program and better wireless internet coverage. Our very active junior sailing program, under the leadership of Sylvie Mathis, has new equipment and a new coachboat, and is set for a rigorous summer teaching and racing season. Our highly-touted women’s Learn to Sail program SAIL CANYON LAKE under Lynn Simpson is underway and will culminate with the 25th anniversary of our SEW-MAD Women’s Regatta (which by the way is named for founders Ruth Madorsky and Sandra Walker). Lynn, by the way, was chosen by the U.S. Naval Academy from about 350 applicants nationwide to teach Academy faculty how to teach sailing to the Middies last summer, and then was asked to return this summer to do so again!! Our recently named Rear Commodore for Sail, Randle Moore, is doing a super job of reorganizing and reinvigorating our racing program, with special thanks to those members who are joining in to act as Principal Race Officers (PROs) and Chase Boat operators. Meanwhile, Bill McVey and his assistants are once again organizing our skippers and crews to make sailing orientations available to Wounded Warriors and handicapped civilians and their families. Meanwhile, off the water, our very active social programs under the leadership of our Port Captain, Kathleen Hixon, and Social Paul & Amy MazeikaSan Antonio, TX Roger Gunderman Pipe Creek, TX Sailors Chair, Pat Ketchum, are in full swing, with a variety of parties, festivals, wine tastings, music, etc. Into this mix we add special events like our upcoming Dr. Branch Leukemia Cup Regatta over the 4th of July weekend. Have you registered a team? Have you donated? See the Leubners, Kathy and Ray. Last year our club raised over $33,000. This year our goal is $40,000! Lastly, I’ll note that we have had superb Commodore’s Breakfasts, and as I recall, we need hosts for July. The club pays for the food. You get to organize the menu and prepare and serve. Talk to Kathleen Hixon about this at 830-935-2014. I hope you got the message here. We are a vibrant club of doers having a great time. Get involved, stay involved, and help us continue to make LCYC one of the premier small yacht clubs in all of the United States! Photo by Lisa Begley Docks & Grounds Lake Canyon Yacht Club Bruce Dunn D&G had a very busy, as well as productive, month. Our annual marina electrical inspection was performed and all was well.A broken water pipe in the sprinkler system posed a challenge but the crew was able to bypass the problem and it turned out well. The electric switch on the tiki taxi for the windlass was moved to a more convenient location. Josef purchased a new roto rooter and cleaned out the sewer pipes. No one's favorite job! The ceiling under the club house by the pool was painted and looks great and fresh. I hope the birds no longer nest there. The rain gutters on the club house and the deck were also cleaned out. The drinking water tanks were cleaned, and the brush pile was burned. Many thanks to Keith Zars for the great job on our pool. It is beautiful and the new turtle is great. Tell him thanks the next time you see him. Now that we are at full crew, I expect the progress to continue. As the summer season begins please be extra careful when fueling your boats as no one wants to spoil our beautiful lake. If you set your fuel can on the dock, please protect it with towels or cardboard so it doesn't drip in the lake. The rising water has broken two cables that are going to be fixed as soon as MDI can get a crew here. T 2015 - 2016 Rick Cioppa Bruce Dunn Richard Reyes Stacy Wilson Audit Committee Ed Miller he turnout for Longneck was rather light this year, probably because of all the thunderstorms that were predicted. Mother Nature was kind to us multihull sailors though and gave us a near perfect Saturday for racing. Our PRO, Rodger Poe, and his able assistants Betty Reeh and Kathleen Acquart set up the course in warm, dry weather with 14 to 18 mile an hour winds. Four races were run back to back without delay until I managed to throw a monkey wrench into this fine display of race management. Unbeknownst to me, my port hull had cracked and was slowly filling with water all day. This culminated in a textbook downwind pitch pole right on the finish line at the end of the fourth race. The chase boat crews of Fred Day and Marvin Arnold in chase two, along with Sasha Acquart, Mike Butler and Ziggy Riedel in chase one, were all needed to get my water logged boat right side up for the long tow back to LCYC. Since I was occupying the starting area for quite some time the F18’s were the only ones to get off a fifth race - sorry guys. Dinner went smoothly, probably since I was not involved, with Terry Tomko, Joe O’brien, Penny Monosmith and Brigitta Hill serving up a delicious meal of fajitas, and rice and beans followed by all sorts of desserts provided by the Multihull Fleet members. The World Famous Longneck Raffle rounded out the night with a huge number of raffle items and giveaways. No one goes away empty handed from our raffle. Unfortunately, Sunday dawned with more thunder storms and we had to call the races and move on to trophies. Steve Piche and Juke Ball took first in the F18 class, followed by Mike Rohrer with his daughter Nicole in second. Colin Casey and Joshua took third. The Portsmouth Fleet was lead by Mike and Janet Hardy on their Hobie 16 followed by Kirk McMullen with his son Davis in second. Winner in the Hobie 17 Fleet was Drew Riddle, second was Stephen Acquart followed by his brother Michael Acquart in third. Joe Monosmith, that would be me, came in fourth. The Trimaran Fleet finished with Charlie Mayer and Craig in first and Larry Sowle sailing with John in second. The rain is filling up the lake and bringing all of you out for great sailing and food! The keel boat and board boat sailors ate well with help from Jake Mathis. Jake and I had perfect teamwork. I bought the food, and he served it! Great job Jake! Call me if you want to host an event. It’s easy and fun to work together. Jean Junker and his gang did a fabulous job with the Mother’s Day Commodore’s Breakfast! They served 60 members his famous “Cowgirl Quiche”. Jean wants to thank his “Galley Crew” - Commodore Bob, Donna Rice, Glenn Miller, Ron Popp, and Rick Mela. Again, I helped with his food purchase/decorations, and they put it all together and served a wonderful breakfast! That’s great crew coordination! Terry Tomko’s gang utilized the galley for the Longneck Multihull Regatta sailors. Great fun! Sylvie Mathis also served great food for the Youth Sailing School classes. Sylvie thanks her crew for helping serve tasty meals to our next generation of LCYC sailors here at our clubhouse. The “Carl Hawkins Annual Fish Fry” has been postponed until Saturday 5/30. Serving time: 1 PM. Hope all of you can still make it! All the food is bought, so come and get it! On another note, I saw an article in “The Commissioner’s Correspondence” from Jen Crownover in which she stated that in 2014 Comal County recycled close to $130,000 worth of consumables. WOW! You may wonder where I’m going with this information. As for our family, we do our part here at home. I hope you do too! So please be mindful and wash out all plastic, metal or glass containers/cups after use and place these items in our “Red Recycle Bins”. Joseph’s crew keeps one right outside our clubhouse door. This will also help our trash pickup fees for LCYC. So let’s start in the galley! Thx! The RSVP has been working great too. Thanks to all the gals and guys for your help in the kitchen too. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for the annual Jimmy Buffet Party, and the Father’s Day Commodore’s Breakfast… The planning stages are looking great, so stay tuned! Enjoy the lake! Kathleen Hixon Copyright 2007-2015 Lake Canyon Yacht Club Dr.Branch LeukemiaCup Regatta W e are just six weeks away from the 2015 Dr. Branch Leukemia Cup Regatta and are already one quarter of the way towards this year’s goal of $40,000. While we were all inspired by Gary Jobson’s personal account of his battle with lymphoma, we have many similar stories within the LCYC family. Team MABL is named after Michael Allen Banks Lindsey, a lymphoma survivor since 2008. The Team Edlund page relates the story of Stephanie Edlund, who contracted leukemia at age four; she is now a vibrant thirteen year old seventh grader. Not to be overlooked are those families who have lost loved ones to blood cancer. Team Stevie Boy is raising funds in memory of Stephen Michael Crane, who passed away in 1975 at age five. Please consider making a donation today to one of twelve LCYC teams. Help us help others in the fight against blood cancers. The Fundraising Committee is working hard to attract business sponsors for this year’s event. We are delighted to welcome back Cadence Bank, CEMEX, McCracken & Carroll Wealth Management Group and Roeschmann Design. Our newest addition for 2015 is Gotta Ride Bikes of San Antonio. Last year’s Silent Auction raised almost $3500 and we are counting on a repeat performance this year. Contact Kathy Leubner if you have an item, service, event, etc. to donate. All proceeds go directly to LLS. Following the race on July 4th the club will serve barbecue chicken. Members are asked to Ray & Kathy Leubner provide sides, salads and desserts. And don’t forget live music courtesy of Jazz, Blues and Diamonds! Trophy presentations will be made Sunday afternoon following the day's races. In addition to racing trophies there will be awards for the teams and individuals that raise the most in donations for LLS. The Regatta Fundraising & Sponsors This two day regatta will consist of a one day long distance race on July 4th and traditional buoys racingon Sunday, July 5th. Trophies will be awarded by class for racing, with another set of trophies for those who raise the most money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. NOR and Registration Forms will be posted to the Leukemia Cup Regatta page of the LCYC website. Create a fundraising team, complete with your own web page, in order to raise funds for blood cancer research. Don't have a boat? Not planning to race? Create a Virtual Team with a group of friends. Erica Badu at LLS in Austin ([email protected]) will set up any new LCYC team pages this year. Once signed up, you'll receive a personalized fundraising website and lots of fundraising resources. You can also earn prizes and incentives for all your hard fundraising work. Contact either Ray Leubner or Jake Mathis with questions pertaining to racing. We invite local businesses who are passionate about raising funds for blood cancer cures to participate as a sponsor in this year's event. A link to Sponsor Packets is posted on the Leukemia Cup page of the LCYC website. Leukemia Cup Regatta T-Shirts Silent Auction We will once again sell Leukemia Cup Regatta t-shirts this year. Please pre-order before June 20th as only a limited quantity will be available for sale at the event. Last year we quickly ran out of all small, medium and large sizes. The price per shirt is $20. You may charge this amount to your club account. Contact Kathy Leubner or order online using the link on the Leukemia Cup Regatta page of the LCYC website. A Silent Auction will be held during the festivities on Saturday, July 4th. We are already off to a great start. Among the items donated are a paella dinner for ten, a fitness/mountain bike, an Idaho Bear Hunt, 4 tickets to Brasil Guitar Duo, a two-night stay at Mountain Shadows (Marfa) and original works of art. If you can contribute an item, service, tickets to an event, etc. please contact Kathy Leubner. 4 D itty Bag June 2015 the A list of donated items as well as a Silent Auction Donor Form can be found on the Leukemia Cup page of the LCYC website. Copyright 2007-2015 Lake Canyon Yacht Club AdaptiveSailingEvents2015 Bill McVey W e had a wonderful day on May 3d hosting wounded warriors and some of their family members for our first Adaptive Sailing outing of the year. Our guests included Janis Roznowski who founded Operation Comfort some 12 years ago, after having served on many flights bringing our wounded warriors home from combat and determining that she wanted to do something to help in their recovery. And has she ever! We had 9 boats and crews lined up for an anticipated 25 guests but just 15 were able to attend so we put them on six boats by families. We had one other honored guest with us for this outing! Jan and Jon Lockhart had volunteered to help using their boat and had invited her father to join them. He is a WWII vet and has had a wonderful career of flying both in the service and in commercial aviation. So Jan, Jon, and her dad sailed on their boat. The weather was perfect with a very nice 5-8 mph wind. Everyone had a chance to helm the boats and trim the sails! Our guests had a great time and were very appreciative of the opportunity to learn about sailing and to enjoy the lunch and afternoon on the water. Prior to the sail we provided lunch for all guests and volunteers. Many thanks to Carolyn Harris, Judy Ritchie, Mary Lindsey, Janet and Les Robertson, Joe Thanks very much to everyone who helped in any way to help make this outing a such a nice one for our guests. Our next outing is scheduled for June 6. Our guests will be coming via the Door-inthe-wall Texas organization in Bandera. Pete Macler will be hosting this one for LCYC. Please contact him if you would like to volunteer to help. Pete's email is [email protected]. The schedule for each session is: 11AM Orientation to club & sailboats 11:30 Lunch provided by LCYC * Sandwiches - Chips - Cookies - Drinks O'Brien, and Jim Ernst for producing this great meal. Big plans are underway for this event. Stay Tuned! SEE YOU ON THE WATER! SAIL CANYON LAKE Women's Learn to Sail Lynn Simpson T he class was held on May 14 & 15 and was attended by two very enthusiastic women: Heather Davila and Elsa Graham, who were ready to learn sailing basics. Day one began with introductions and an overview of the class. With formalities out of the way it was time to head the docks for some hands on learning. We covered boat parts, parts of a sail, how a sail works and wind awareness. The next step, was to partially rig the boat, to be ready for our afternoon sail. With the rigging almost complete it was time for a much needed lunch break! The weather held up perfectly with winds in the 8 - 10 mph range, no threat of thunderstorms or rain! Before setting sail we went over the steps for tacking, It was now time to leave the marina and begin our afternoon 6 D itty Bag June 2015 the of sailing. Elsa was first on the tiller and, did a fine job of sailing us up to the dam where we switched out drivers and, Heather had her time on the tiller. Between the two students they certainly got in their fair share of tacking, with each completed tack they became more comfortable and confident! We saw that clouds were starting to build and the winds were becoming stronger. It was time to head back to the dock. Within minutes of docking the winds whipped up to about 18 mph, out on the lake white caps were rolling. We de-rigged and secured the boat for the evening, all set for the following day. Heavy rains, gusty winds and the threat of thunder-storms cancelled our sailing plans for day two. We did get in a couple of hours of classroom time and covered: rules of the road, jibing, points of sail, sail trim, and knots. Since our sailing time was cut short, a couple of make-up sail dates were arranged, they will take place over the next two weekends! The class went really well and, was really liked by both Heather and Elsa. The weekday class will definitely be on the calendar for next year’s program! Copyright 2007-2015 Lake Canyon Yacht Club JUNIORSailingProgram Sylvie Mathis _/) Summer is here! May 31st is the first day of the “It’s “School” To Sail” Junior Sailing Program, but we have more to offer this year. This year’s school began on Saturday, May 16th and at the time of writing this article has one weekend under its belt. Mother Nature threatened to tighten the belt, but with a little luck, both days gave us a reprieve just at the right time for the youth to experience the joys of sailing, many for the first time! The team of LCYC instructors included myself, Sylvie Mathis, Duane McBride, Lynn Simpson, Harold Simmons and Rick Mella. 7 D itty Bag June 2015 the Basic Racing August 4, 5 and 6 August 9 - Club Series Racing Chris Besch Extra assistance was provided by Bill McVey and Andy Zinn. Together, we introduced sailing topics and theory to a group of about two dozen students. All that learning can really work up an appetite, so extra thanks go out to Maureen Simmons for coordinating all the meals to feed those hungry sailors and volunteers. This year’s group of youth sailors are fortunate to have some past “graduates” of the sailing school assisting as youth volunteers. Special thanks to Eli, Shaun, Britt, Katrina, Zach, Teagan and Donovan for setting a great example of how much fun sailing can be. Hopefully some future LCYC instructors in the making! The learning possibilities don’t end when the sailing school completes. There are plenty of other opportunities throughout the summer for the youth to get involved in sailing at LCYC. So if anyone has or knows of any youth that may be interested, please don’t hesitate to introduce them to the Junior Sailing page of the LCYC website. Copyright 2007-2015 Lake Canyon Yacht Club 2015RACE Program MoonShineRegatta Bruce Dunn & Randle Moore W hat a beautiful night! The wind was just right and the moon shone brightly. Charlie Mayer was the first of the two trimarans on Brioso. Within the spinnaker fleet, Fred Lindsey came in first on TLT, followed by Phillip Davis on Tejano, and Chris Powers single handed Clarabelle for third. In the non-spin fleet, Jim Kizziar was first on Alibi III, second was Jim Ritchie on Agapetos Duo, and third was Robin Engel on her Catalina 22, Havin' Fun. Bruce Dunn reports all racers had a great time and were happy with the fleeting. Charlie Mayer’s lighted buoys worked quite well. A great deal of thanks go to the race committee consisting of Dave Sanford, Bruce Dunn, and Mark Goodner (2014). SAIL CANYON LAKE! KeelBoatRaces–May 9thRandle Moore W hen you have twelve boats registered and only four boats show up for the start, you know something is amiss. I think it is safe to say, there were no winners, just survivors. Twenty-two mph of sustained winds can be quite intimidating. I know, I’ve gone out in my Flying Scot in winds like that. That’s the kind of crazy some crazy people do when it’s race day. I’ve also found that’s the sort of wind that breaks things on a boat. On that particular Saturday, I found the Tiki Taxi to be much more to my liking. The finishes were a little odd in this race. The J/22 fleet managed to have a perfect tie among all boats for the day. All came in 7th out of a fleet of six. The hardy souls who ventured out on the course made up an odd fleet; Charlie Mayer on his trimaran, Brioso, Buddy Byington on StellaRay, Pete Macler on Somewhere, amd Jack Mogab on Pura Vida. When the day was done, Charlie took first in the multihull fleet. The non-spin fleet finished out with Buddy Byington first, Pete Macler second and Jack Mogab third. All racers seemed to have a good time and should have their boats repaired in time for the next races. A big set of thanks goes to the folks that made the race happen and prepared snacks afterword – Kathleen Hixon and Jake Mathis in the clubhouse, and on race committee: Jean Junker, Arnie Wilenken (HCYC), Joe McDonough, and Fred Scantling (HCYC and LCYC applicant).
