meanders through plots of palm trees, leading to the entrance of
the bungalow, marked by a neem tree and hidden behind a stone
facade with window-slits and a skylight. Ascending the steps to
the entrance, a pair of sculptures stand poised in a bed of gravel,

The foyer leads on to a corridor, and to a spacious living room

Alibaug is a coastal town located on the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, first developed in the
1600s by King Shivaji’s naval chief. The headquarters of the Raigad district of the state, Alibaug
is about 35 kilometers south of Mumbai, and connected to the city by road as well as a regular
ferry and catamaran service. Thus, the town and its surrounding villages are a favoured getaway destination for trendy Mumbai residents. Amongst the weekend and holiday homes
that dot the beachfronts and hillsides, are several large sea and mountain-facing properties
owned by some of Mumbai’s most well known families. Mandwa, Kashid, Kihim, Akshi, Awas,
Rewas and Nagaon beaches are a short drive away from Alibaug. Other nearby attractions
include the Kulaba and Murud-Janjira forts, the Portuguese ruins and Buddhist caves in Chaul,
and the Bene Israeli synagogue.
The easiest way to reach the property is via ferry or speed boat from the Gateway of India to
the Mandwa jetty. There are regular air-conditioned ferry services to and from the Gateway
of India which take 45 minutes each way (a speed boat cuts the journey down to a mere 20
minutes). Once at the Mandwa jetty, one may arrive at the property either by private car, taxi
