Catholic Education SA Directors Visit On Friday 24th August, we were privileged to have Paul and Vin visit our Centre. Paul is the Director of CESA, Catholic Education South Australia and Vin is the Deputy Director of CESA. Both Paul and Vin were excellent problem-solvers and made new discoveries. They were genuinely impressed with the variety of learning experiences we provide and the diverse projects we do to survive. Paul and Vin interacting with our sustainable fishing interactives, with Michael Honey, our Principal. National Recreational Fisheries Conference On Saturday 18th September and Sunday 19th John Agnew, our Honorary Senior Consultant, and Tim attended the National Conference and gave a presentation. We were honoured to have Patrick Hone, Executive Director of FRDC, as part of our audience. We met some excellent people, heard some terrific presentations and saw some amazing displays. John examines a trailer promoting sustainable fishing. Workshop with GBRMPA On Wednesday 15th - Friday 17th September, John and Tim did some consultancy work with GBRMPA, (Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority) Carolyn Luder and Andrew Denzin, and our colleagues from Ballina MDC, Mick O’Connor and Lynda Hourigan. It was an exceptional few days that allowed us to share curriculum initiatives, special projects and how we nurture our Volunteers. Reef HQ: http://www.reefhq.com.au/ has many fantastic displays and amazing aquaria – they even do live “Skype” interviews from their aquariums. Andrew waves to John whilst he’s immersed in one of the aquaria displays. Carolyn highlighting a catchment to coast poster. Mick, Lynda and John discussing curriculum development. Schools First NAB Awards We are absolutely elated to have been awarded a NAB Regional Impact Award and the State Award for our MDC. This was in recognition of the wonderful partnership that we have with CCS – City of Charles Sturt. We sincerely thank Rata Luckens and Garry Griffiths, NRM Officers, who’ve been outstanding in their service, advice with our Coastal Signs and our Dune Care work. We’ve also worked with Rata as part of the Coastal Reference Group which advises Council on coastal issues. Thanks also to our Ward Councillors Jim Fitzpatrick and Robert Randall, who’ve supported our End of Year Celebrations and actually initiated our annual support from CCS. Special thanks to our new Mayor, Kirsten Alexander, a wonderful supporter, who is also one of our MDC Ambassadors: http://www.marinediscoverycentre.com.au/Marine_Discovery/ambassadors/Ambassadors.html We are in the running for the National NAB Award which will be announced on November 7th. Rata showing our Dune Care Group which weeds we need to pull out. New MDC/SOS program We are really pleased with our new program which allows our Star of the Sea students a closer involvement with the MDC. Many of our Mums and Dads are helping classes, so that our Teachers can enjoy seeing their students discovering in the MDC. We thank Fiona for co-ordinating this very special project. Some of our Teachers have also made some brilliant poster displays of their classes discovering! Toby, one of our wonderful SOS Teachers, brought his young niece over to see our seahorses. Dune Care Group We have 11 great Volunteers! We’d love to have more. Please let us know if you’re interested in joining us. Rata is organising the plants that needs to be planted. It’s looking already much better. Some of the plants planted. Weeding is still an important part. We have just planted about 90 plants. City of Charles Sturt sponsor the MDC We are thrilled that our local Council have come onboard for a one year sponsorship of $25K. We have had a 20 year partnership with the City of Charles Sturt (CCS), which started with Damian Moroney, the first CCS Environment Officer. Damian came and taught the very first Marine Studies lesson at Star of the Sea School. Harold Anderson, our former Mayor, was also a passionate supporter of the MDC. We are very grateful for the outstanding work with Rata Luckens and Garry Griffiths, CCS NRM Officers. Thank you very much to Jim Fitzpatrick and Robert Randall, our dedicated Ward Councillors. The first thing that comes into your mind are probably fish or prawns. However, there is more to it than marine creatures. What about seaweed? Many foods contain seaweed. Seaweeds are an important ingredient that is used in many of the foods that we eat. Large amounts of seaweeds are harvested from the ocean or from the beach-washed material to extract food substances like alginates, carrageenan and beta carotene which are used in many foods, like ice cream, some bread, beers pudding, salad dressing and desserts. People from Japan to Hawaii eat seaweeds fresh, in soups or dried. Other common foods from the sea are fish, crustaceans - especially lobster, prawns, crabs - molluscs, such as abalone, mussels, oysters and scallops and their relatives the octopus, squid and cuttles. Many other types of animals, such as sea jellies, sea cucumbers and sea urchins are eaten in some parts of the world. Marine mammals such as seals, whales, sharks and dugongs are also killed as a major source of food. We were grateful to gain support for Science Week from the National Science Week (SA) Committee to deliver some exciting activities for visitors. Science Week was again, an outstanding success this year. The event was very well attended from schools, over 375 school students and 98 adults/community visitors. We were very grateful to receive the funding support granted. Science Week is a very important part of our yearly program.
