We are proud to provide this vital work in our communities. Northeast Ohioans living in uncertain times can feel more secure about their future through the programs and services provided only by the American Red Cross. These services aim to help community members learn how to prevent and respond to every-day emergencies, resulting in improved quality of life, health and well-being for individuals and families alike. During our 2013 fiscal year, the Northeast Ohio Region of the American Red Cross responded to 980 local disasters, assisted 1,625 military families and trained over 1 million people in lifesaving skills. We continue to provide 24-hour support to members of the military, veterans and their families. In addition, the Red Cross collects and distributes about 98 percent of the region’s blood supply. We also prepare for disasters with our emergency response partners by participating in drills throughout the region. In October of 2012, our response to Superstorm Sandy involved nearly 140 volunteers, from 10 chapters, managing five shelters throughout Cuyahoga and Lorain Counties. All that we do is made possible through the generous support of our individual, corporate, federated and foundation donors who contribute financial gifts that empower the American Red Cross to provide crucial, lifesaving services quickly and compassionately. Donors can be confident that an average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. Through targeted financial contributions, we are able to satisfy some of the unique mission related needs of our local communities. For example, • Twice monthly, our Summit & Portage Counties Chapter offers community dinners to individuals in need. • Both our Stark and Summit & Portage Counties Chapters offer transportation services to life-sustaining doctor visits for those who are unable to drive themselves. • We continue to provide Nurse Assistant Training programs in Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Lorain, Mahoning, Summit and Trumbull counties. In FY13 we trained over 500 nurse assistants! • Our Greater Cleveland Chapter offers the Operation Save-a-Life program which installs smoke detectors in homes to mitigate fire related deaths. Deaths from fires remains at a historic low. • The Firelands Chapter installs stove top safety equipment in public housing facilities for seniors to mitigate fires. • The Stark County Chapter operates the county’s Rape Crisis Services. Over 90% of the Red Cross work force is comprised of volunteers. Our volunteers work tirelessly to provide vital support to the American Red Cross throughout Northeast Ohio. Over the past year, Northeast Ohio volunteers have traveled throughout the region to participate in preparedness drills, respond to disasters and assist members of the community. We also have dedicated volunteers who work in our offices, at our events and act as ambassadors in the communities we serve. In addition, executives from the top companies in Northeast Ohio volunteer their time and expertise to support our mission by serving as board members. We would be unable to fulfill our mission without you! We are truly a community supported organization dedicated to the people we serve throughout Northeast Ohio. But, as you can see, we cannot do it alone. We appreciate each and every donor, volunteer and staff member for making it possible to provide another year of vital support throughout our region and ask that you continue to support us as we move to the future. Mary-Alice Frank Chief Executive Officer Northeast Ohio Region 1 You Make It Possible The American Red Cross of Northeast Ohio provides vital services 365 days a year—from responding to home fires in local neighborhoods to teaching First Aid and CPR to community groups. We’re able to provide these services thanks to a corps of 1,255 dedicated volunteers and the generosity of our donors. These donations are put to good use—we are proud to tell donors that we invest an average of 91 cents of every dollar in humanitarian services and programs, well above the industry standard. How do we do it? By practicing what we preach: preparedness. We train our staff and volunteers. We plan ahead for the types of disasters that strike our community. And we train individuals, businesses and community groups so that they too can be prepared. The American Red Cross of Northeast Ohio serves 22 counties and their 4.5 million residents. In this report, which covers fiscal year 2013 (July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013), you’ll learn how, through the generosity of donors, we were able to help people down the street, across the country and around the world. 2 House Fires to Hurricanes We’re ready to respond to disasters 7 days a week, 365 days a year in our community, providing shelter, food, clothing and emotional support at no cost to those in need. Our Region is part of a nationwide network of Red Cross regions that work together to respond to large-scale relief efforts. Last year, the Northeast Ohio Region responded to disaster incidents including home and apartment fires. One September evening in 2013, Yolanda Gray returned from work to find her home smoldering. A fire, set by two children who also lived in the apartment complex, had left her with very little but the clothes she had worn to work that day. The only thing that survived the fire was $31 of birthday money she had stashed in her ceramic bank. “The Red Cross was already on the scene when I got home,” said Yolanda. “The volunteer I worked with was very loving and understanding. She was ready to provide help when I needed it.” Yolanda is a perfect example of the benefit of taking control of her own recovery. Through the Red Cross and its community partnerships, Yolanda was able to make a deposit on a new apartment and pick out a few pieces of furniture to replace what she had lost. “I’m going to bounce back,” Yolanda said. Home fires are the most common disaster to which the Red Cross responds. On average, we respond to at least two home fires every night. Although these fires don’t typically make the news as hurricanes or other large-scale events do, they are devastating for those who have suddenly lost their homes, possessions and sense of security. In fiscal year 2013, our Region assisted 3,903 community members/families affected by fires and other local disasters. Our Region also teaches families, organizations and corporations how to be prepared for emergencies through free educational presentations. Last year we reached 70,418 people with community disaster education and preparedness programs. Northeast Ohio is not immune to severe weather, as evidenced by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. There were several power outages in Cuyahoga and Lorain Counties that lasted five days. 140 volunteers from throughout the Region worked in Red Cross shelters providing food, comfort and warmth to those in need. In addition, 37 local volunteers deployed to help those affected on the East Coast (see page 7 for our response to Supertorm Sandy). Preparing for the Unexpected Every year our chapters teach people the lifesaving skills they need to protect themselves and their families, including First Aid, CPR and water safety. We offer these trainings in multiple ways: online training, traditional classroom settings and full-service courses where we bring the training to your workplace or organization. Last year 63,125 individuals learned critical skills through Red Cross courses such as: • First Aid, CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) • Aquatics • Babysitting We are fortunate to work with corporate partners such as Dominion East Ohio, who sponsored our Preparedness Day on April 13, 2013. Volunteers from both organizations set up locations in shopping centers throughout the region and taught shoppers how to “Be Red Cross Ready,” in the event of a disaster. Participants took pre- and post-tests to determine their safety knowledge. They also received a free safety backpack sponsored by Dominion. The backpacks contained safety supplies such as: flashlights, glow sticks, first aid kits, emergency drinking water, face masks, gloves, and other useful items and information. This event helped us to educate over 6,000 people in Northeast Ohio. American Red Cross Northeast Ohio Region 3 Serving the Military, Their Families and Veterans The Red Cross gives support to active-duty military members, National Guard and Reserve members, veterans and their families. We provide predeployment briefings, called “Get to Know Us Before You Need Us,” and connect families with needed resources when their loved ones are deployed. In FY13 our Region briefed over 3,750 military families throughout Northeast Ohio. Deployed service members also count on us to deliver emergency messages, such as notification of an illness or death in the family. Twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year, the Red Cross relays urgent messages containing accurate, factual, complete and verified descriptions of the emergency to service members stationed anywhere in the world, including on ships at sea and at embassies and remote locations. Even if the service member receives an email or phone call from home, Red Cross-verified information assists the member and his or her commanding officers with making a decision regarding emergency leave. Military families rely on these verified communications. In Northeast Ohio, the Red Cross K9 Action Team provides “comfort therapy” to those who are returning home. We also provide support for the sick and wounded at military and veterans hospitals, such as the Louis Stokes VA Medical Center in Cleveland, and assistance in obtaining emergency financial support. Serving through Volunteerism Before meeting her husband, Ingrid Normington worked as a marine biologist helping to develop a sustainable plan for the 7,100 islands and islets in her native Philippines. In the early days of their relationship, John, retired military, and Ingrid were pen pals. Once they decided to marry, Ingrid and her daughter Maya returned with John to his home in Stark County. Then came September 11, 2001. John re-enlisted in the National Guard. Ingrid immersed herself into being a military wife. She volunteered with a military family readiness group where she met Melissa Seibert, the Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces Manager for the Northeast Ohio Region. “Melissa empowered me and continues to empower me,” says Ingrid, who now volunteers with military families through the Stark County Chapter. Ingrid understands the power of having someone there who understands the situation many military families are go through. John recently returned from active duty in Afghanistan. 4 Father and Son, Antonio Ciraldo and PFC Joseph Ciraldo When his mother passed away in February, 2013, Antonio Ciraldo knew he needed to find a way to get his son, PFC Joseph Ciraldo, home for the funeral. As a child, Joseph had spent time after school and every Sunday with his grandparents. He and his grandmother, in particular, were very close. At his son’s suggestion, Antonio contacted the American Red Cross. Within 30 minutes Joseph’s leave was being processed. “We, as a community, are blessed with such a program,” Antonio said. “With a single phone call my son was able to be present for the funeral of his grandmother and stand as a source of strength for his grandfather.” Ingrid Normington stands with her husband, John. Local Efforts, National Reach Our workforce is made up of a half million volunteers and 30,000 paid staff members. In FY13 over 100 regional volunteers deployed to distasters across the country. These volunteers left the safety and comfort of their own homes to respond to the needs of others in natural disasters such as floods, wildfires, tornados and hurricanes. As needed, we are able to mobilize our vehicles and resources to respond across the state as well as across the country. Gary with his daughter Christy and wife, Pam. Gary Burris was stuck in traffic when his daughter became unresponsive. Ahead, he saw a Red Cross vehicle and ran for assistance. Tim Reichel, Red Cross volunteer, was driving a Red Cross vehicle back to Canton, OH from an event. Upon seeing his panic, Tim ran to Gary’s daughter, Christy. With no cell reception, attempts to call ‘911’ failed. A truck driver used his radio to call for help. Tim, certified in CPR and First Aid, could see she was breathing and propped her legs up to prevent shock. He retrieved gauze from his vehicle to wet and place on her forehead. A Greater Cleveland volunteer assists in loading a truck for deployment. Once the EMS arrived, they took Christy to a local hospital. It was determined that Christy had a seizure. She is now in good health. “As I’ve shared this story, people can’t believe how lucky we were. I was paralyzed with fear but feel so blessed that the Red Cross was there,” said Gary. Tim began volunteering for the Red Cross after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. In response to this situation Tim asks that everyone get CPR and First Aid certification. American Red Cross Northeast Ohio Region Hundreds of volunteers from across the United States receive a briefing on the Colorado Wildfires. 5 Meeting Local Needs, Regionally Community Dinners Twice a month the Summit and Portage Counties Chapter provides area residents with the opportunity to have a hot meal, fresh fruit and a bag of groceries. Those attending the Community Dinners range from single adults to families with small children. In addition to Red Cross volunteers, many organizations and businesses assist in staffing the dinners. Over the last year representatives from Macy’s, Summa Health System, FirstEnergy, AT&T and FedEx have all participated in the program. In FY13 we served 3,821 meals. The fresh fruit program increased during FY13. Thanks to grant funding, the program has been able to provide fresh fruit at each meal. Prior to the funding, fresh fruit was only available at the last dinner of the month. Medical Transportation Between Summit and Stark County programs, over 329,300 miles were driven in FY13 on behalf of those who have a medical necessity. The medical transportation program provides rides to those who are undergoing life-sustaining treatments such as dialysis or cancer treatments at area health providers. The fleet consists of 23 cars which have been donated or purchased through grant funding. Each car is equipped with a child’s car seat or booster seat. Each driver has a clean driving record and has CPR and First Aid Training. Nurse Assistant Training The Preparedness Health & Safety Services (PHSS) Nurse Assistant Training program celebrated its 24th year of operation helping economically and educationally disadvantaged individuals gain valuable skills equipping them to become State Tested Nurse Assistants (STNAs). The program prepares individuals with the skills and experience needed to provide quality care for residents in long-term care facilities and hospitals. In FY13, we trained 532 individuals in Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Lorain, Mahoning, Stark, Summit and Trumbull Counties. Rape Crisis Program In 1975, the Stark County Chapter opened the doors of its Rape Crisis Center. For more than 38 years they have continued to provide compassion and care to those affected by rape and sexual assault. In FY13, the dedicated workers began offering age-appropriate education, “Talking about Touching”, to 7 area school districts. Operation Save-a-Life The Greater Cleveland Chapter, in cooperation with local fire departments, installs smoke alarms and batteries in the homes of economically disadvantaged and at-risk individuals and families. Since 1991, more than 145,000 smoke alarms have been installed in more than 48,000 homes. This program also distributes fire safety literature throughout the community and reached over 70,000 residents in FY13. Carrie Hodges-Gay, a 2013 graduate of the Red Cross Nurse Assistant Training program Raising nine children on her own, Carrie worked many jobs to support her children’s educational goals. Once her children where grown and working, it was Carrie’s turn. The journey for Red Cross Nurse Assistant Training (NAT) students starts with CPR and First Aid training. The next step involves learning life skills, resume building and practice interviews. Finally NAT students participate in clinicals in a long-term care facility. “Students in our program tend to need financial assistance,” said Melissa Beadle, Director of Medical Education, American Red Cross. “Donor support supplements the cost of the training making education a reality for people like Carrie.” “When I heard about the NAT program, I jumped at the chance to fulfill my dream!” says Carrie. Carrie graduated from the program in 2013 and works at the Ashtabula County Nursing Rehabilitation Center. “I’ve always wanted to help people and my success is measured by the people that I touch,” says Carrie. “Thank you Red Cross, not just for me but for all who you’ve lifted up with this program!” 6 Across the Country Answering Crisis With Action The remnants of Superstorm Sandy hit the Northeast Ohio Region on Monday, October 29, 2012. The hardest hit areas were Cuyahoga and Lorain Counties. Due to widespread power outages and storm damage, the Red Cross opened and managed, at its peak, five separate shelter locations and several warming centers. Additionally, the Red Cross supported individual municipalities with their own warming centers and shelters by providing food, water, coffee, cots and blankets. Ohio Governor John Kasich visited the shelter in Lakewood and was given a tour by Firelands Chapter volunteer and shelter manager Dennis Pell and Greater Cleveland Chapter Disaster Action Team coordinator John Muni. The Emergency Services Department provided services for six straight days in multiple municipalities and counties due to the training and dedication of disaster volunteers throughout the Region. Nearly 140 volunteers, from 10 chapters, assisted with the disaster relief operations. Disaster volunteers were also deployed to assist in the relief operations along the East Coast. In total, 37 Northeast Ohio volunteers traveled to New York, New Jersey, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Connecticut and Rhode Island to provide assistance. We received many local donations to assist with the Sandy relief efforts on the East Coast. For a complete list of Sandy Donors, go to page 27. Ohio Governor John Kasich visits a Red Cross shelter in Lakewood during Superstorm Sandy. Firelands volunteer, Eilene Guy , deployed to the East Coast during Superstorm Sandy. American Red Cross Northeast Ohio Region 7 Across the Region Our Region proudly dedicated the new Northeast Ohio Readiness Center during an Open House on January 16, 2013. Red Cross volunteers and staff from the Region hosted the event, promoting this important new investment for the safety, security and well-being of the residents of Northeast Ohio. The Readiness Center is located at the Richland County American Red Cross Chapter in Mansfield, Ohio and functions as a storage and distribution facility for basic Red Cross response and relief materials such as cots, blankets, vehicles, equipment and more. Because of its central location and easy access to Ohio’s interstate transportation network, the facility allows the Red Cross to quickly and easily transport critical supplies to support large-scale relief operations at any point in Northeast Ohio - and beyond. The events during the Open House included a tour of the facility along with a special dedication ceremony. Volunteers and staff members concluded the event with a Red Cross Roundtable, “Lessons for Community Readiness.” Executing Exercises, Preparing a Regional Response With a footprint that includes three nuclear power plants and three major airports, disaster teams throughout the Northeast Ohio Region prepare for large-scale emergencies with careful planning and practice. By executing semi-annual exercises, Red Cross workers learn how to provide a consistent and comprehensive response to any event or disaster. Each of the chapters participates in local emergency planning drills. The entire Region collaborates for large-scale emergencies like those involving Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, Akron-Canton Airport or Perry Nuclear Power Plant. In fiscal year 2013, over 300 Northeast Ohio volunteers and staff participated in 35 drills. Scenarios ranged from nuclear events, plant explosions, airport emergencies, active shooters to various other hazmat emergencies. The main objectives vary by scenario. Some seek to practice sheltering and feeding for large numbers, some to practice the operations of a joint information center. The response remains consistent while the disaster itself tests and strengthens the Region’s ability to cope with different kinds of dilemmas. 8 Time Magazine called the Hurricane app one of “8 apps for keeping tabs on the ‘storm of the century’”— which users seem to agree with. Here are just two of the positive reviews the Hurricane app has received: “We tried unsuccessfully to find flashlights and batteries at numerous stores [before Superstorm Sandy]. Not only does this app have a flashlight, it also has strobe lights and alarms. The information it provides is better than the news because it can be focused on your location specifically. Love it!” “This app is so amazing, not only does the toolkit allow the phone to be a flashlight and strobe light, it also gives us timely alerts/warnings...It also sets up a predetermined contact list to notify after the storm, as well as an option to contact social media after the storm has passed. It gives shelter info and weather radar too. Best of the best! So happy I heard about it prior to this megastorm [Superstorm Sandy].” American Red Cross Northeast Ohio Region Help is in your Hand with American Red Cross Mobile Apps Throughout 2012 and 2013 the Red Cross rolled out a suite of apps that place a span of Red Cross disaster information into the hands of smart phone users. Literally. According to a survey the Red Cross conducted in 2012, mobile apps are currently tied in fourth place with social media as the most popular way to get information during an emergency. As a result, the Wildfire, Earthquake, Tornado and Hurricane apps all allow users to tie in to their social media accounts and send out a quick “I’m safe” message directly from the app. These apps share many features including audible alerts when danger is present, a toolkit that uses the phone’s camera flash as a flashlight or strobe light and preloaded preparedness content that gives instant access to all information, even without a mobile connection. The suite currently includes the following apps: • Tornado • Hurricane • Wildfire • Earthquake • First Aid • Pet First Aid • Shelter Finder • Volunteer The apps are available in English or Spanish (based on user settings). They can be downloaded directly from the iTunes or Google Play app stores. 9 Regional Statistics Disaster Services Disaster Incidents..................................................................................980 Families served...................................................................................1,286 Individuals served...............................................................................3,903 Individuals reached w/community disaster education............70,418 Participation in drills....................................300 volunteers in 35 drills Operation Save-a-Life Smoke alarms installed.....................................................................3,513 Transportation Services Number of trips Summit/Portage.................................................15,373 Clients served.........................................................................................768 Number of Trips Stark.......................................................................8,908 Clients served.....................................................................................1,007 Service to the Armed Forces Total SAF Cases....................................................................................936 Community Dinners Total Meals Served in Summit/Portage........................................3,821 Rape Crisis Cases........................................................................................................423 Counseling hours..................................................................................589 Hotline calls.............................................................................................371 Age appropriate school education................................61 classrooms in 7 school districts Preparedness and Health and Safety Services Digital Reach - Accessing Information....................................616,627 Digital Reach - App Downloads...................................................17,209 Digital Reach - Social...................................................................417,209 First Aid, CPR, AED Enrollees.....................................................22,365 Aquatics Enrollees.............................................................................9,094 Caregiving Enrollees.............................................................................885 Preparedness Participants.............................................................30,781 Nurse Assistant Training.................................................................... 532 Total Course Enrollees...................................................................63,125 Total PHSS Reach.....................................................................1,177,824 International Services Total Restoring Family Links Cases.....................................................21 Total Restoring Family Links Activities................................................31 Intl.
