Harris Kim Brown ~ A Local Success Story Kim Brown, Holdenville, com- mother which both passed pleted the Licensed Practical Nursing away during her first year (LPN) career major at Wes Watkins Technology Center (WWTC) on Jan. 30. Brown first entered the career and technology education center in 2010 and enrolled in the Multi-Skilled Nursing Assistant major. After completing this program, she entered the LPN career major. Over the years, she encountered several difficulties but due to her determination and her nursing training at WWTC, she is now ready to follow her goal with a successful career working in the health care industry. During her schooling, Brown had to overcome many obstacles. Her son, who had a heart transplant when he was one year old, began her desire to become a nurse. Brown was always a natural caretaker and took care of an ill uncle who had a stroke and her grand- of school. She also gave birth to surgery, helped her father tated and later passed away, and she another child, had appendicitis who had both legs ampu- assisted her very ill sister who was accepted in the nursing program with her, but was unable to start due to illness. Her sister had a baby in January 2013 and experienced complications afterwards. Brown’s nursing training and newly learned skills were becoming very useful. Brown would go to clinicals which was part of her nursing training, later stop and check on her children and her sister’s children, then travel to the hospital in Oklahoma City and sit with her father until visiting hours were over. Then it was back home to do homework late into the evening hours and then get up very early for clinicals the next morning. On her days off, she would take her father to dialysis. Downton Abbey Paul Anka A special thanks to my friend Virginia Schauer for the following ... Ramblings of a Retired Mind I was thinking about how a status symbol of today is those cell phones that everyone has clipped onto their belt or purse. I can’t afford one. So, I’m wearing my garage door opener. I also made a cover for my hearing aid and now I have what they call blue teeth, I think. You know, I spent a fortune on deodorant before I realized that people didn’t like me anyway. I was thinking that women should put pictures of missing husbands on beer cans! I was thinking about old age and decided that old age is ‘when you still have something on the ball, but you are just too tired to bounce it.’ I thought about making a fitness movie for folks my age, and call it ‘Pumping Rust’. I’ve gotten that dreaded furniture disease. That’s when your chest is falling into your drawers! When people see a cat’s litter box, they always say, ‘Oh, have you got a cat?’ Just once I want to say, ‘No, it’s for company!’ Employment application blanks always ask who is to be notified in case of an emergency. I think you should write, ‘A Good Doctor’! I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older. Then, it dawned on me. They were cramming for their finals. As for me, I’m just hoping God grades on the curve. —CC— Awhile back, my wife wrote an article about her typing class in high school. It brought back memories for several of our readers. It was with great interest that I read an article this week about the “comeback” of typewriters . . .and some of the antique typewriters are worth a fortune! Anna Russell writes that today’s computers and tablets can do almost anything. But they were never used to type out the manuscript of “No County for Old Men.” “The six-figure price that Cormac McCarthy’s Olivetti typewriter fetched a few years back shows the glamour that can get attached to typewriters—even those not owned by a famous author. On May 25, Auction Team Breker, a Cologne, Germany, auction house that specializes in office antiques, will offer some 100 rare vintage typewriters in its biannual office antiques sale. Among the close to 700 items are an 1895 Ford typewriter with a filigree copper grill (estimate $13,000 to $20,000) and an 1879 Crandall with mother-of-pearl inlays, with an estimate of $7,000 to $10,000. An 1894 Edison Mimeograph Typewriter No. 1 starts at $10,000. Interest in antique typewriters has grown in recent years, says Uwe Breker, who has run the auction for more than 25 years. Mr. Breker has collected them himself for 40 years; he has 700. “The typewriter is the grandfather of the computer,” he says. “That is how it all started.” For collector Martin Howard, part of the pleasure is restoring typewriters of the 1880s and 1890s, which he calls “three-dimensional puzzles.” Over 25 years, he has amassed 85 of them and brought them all back to full functionality. “There’s a real retro-chic in using a manual typewriter. It’s cool, it’s got a good sound,” he says. He keeps them in a display case in his Toronto home and continues to buy and sell the machines from all over the world. Still, he doesn’t use them to write: “I love my Mac,” he says. The first typewriter that would become commercially successful appeared on the market in 1874. The next two decades were marked by intense experimentation with hundreds of devices. For example, the 1894 Crown, offered in Breker’s sale ($11,000 to $15,000), has no keys at all—the user slides an index pointer lever along a rail to choose a raised letter on a type wheel. By the early 1900s, typewriters settled into a more standardized design. The Breker auction includes no celebrity names so far, but they can make a big difference in pricing. Christie’s had set a $20,000 high estimate for Mr. McCarthy’s Olivetti Lettera 32, on which he had typed all his work for a half century; it sold for $254,500. In 2005, Heritage Auctions sold an Underwood Portable typewriter owned by Tennessee Williams (he used it to work on “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”) for $4,481. Los Angeles real-estate investor Steve Soboroff says his collection includes machines once owned by John Lennon, Ernest Hemingway and the Unabomber. A few computers (and pre-computers) often turn up at typewriter auctions as well. Breker wants $50,000 to $100,000 for the Enigma, a 1938 cipher machine that could program up to 22 billion types of codes. The auction house is asking $250,000 to $400,000 for a 1976 Apple 1, one of only six surviving functional models, with a signature by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Sometimes typewriters get a new life in a different color. Manhattan’s Kasbah Mod Typewriters gives them bright paint jobs—from turquoise and pink shades to chrome and 24 karat goldplated models. “We turn it into a design object, the same way an iPad is cool to play with,” says founder and chief creative director Chase S. Gilbert. Among the buyers are people in their 20s and 30s. On typewriters “your words count a little bit more,” says Eric Bradley, typewriter collector and public relations associate at Heritage. He’s seen young enthusiasts “carrying a 10-pound [typewriter] to a coffee shop to bang out the next great American novel.” — Wall Street Journal —CC— And, finally, a great story from the “good old days.” Recently a teenager could not find her cordless telephone. After several minutes of searching, she said to her mom, ”You know what they should invent? A phone that stays connected to its base so it never gets lost.” Jerry Lewis Downton Abbey Sunday March 3 7PM Paul Anka Live 8:30PM Downton Abbey, Season Three Sunday March 10 7PM Andrea Bocelli: Live in Central Park Monday March 11 7PM Rick Steves’ Hidden Europe 9PM Barbra Streisand: One Night Only Monday March 4 7PM The Best of 50s Pop Tuesday March 5 7PM Daniel O’Donnell Wednesday March 6 7PM Chris Mann in Concert 8:30PM Celtic Woman: Believe Thursday March 7 7PM Celtic Thunder Mythology 9PM Doc Martin Tuesday March 12 8:30PM Divinas: Live Wednesday March 13 7PM Oscar Hammerstein II 8:30PM The Best of 50s Pop Thursday March 14 9PM Doc Martin Friday March 8 8PM The Heart of Perfect Health w/Brenda Watson Friday March 15 8PM Joe Bonamassa: An Acoustic Evening Saturday March 9 9PM An Evening w/Jerry Lewis: Live from Las Vegas Saturday March 16 7PM The Fabulous 50s Full schedules Full schedules available available at www.oeta.tv at www.oeta.tv Kim Brown Success Story This ad provided, in part by: Continued from Front Page schedule, it never kept her from completing the nursing program which is considered a very complex and rigorous career major at WWTC. Harry Turners Win Free Trip To California Mr. and Mrs. Harry Turner will leave Oklahoma City on the morning of February 14 aboard an American Airlines DC-7 for San Francisco, Calif., as a result of winning a free trip sponsored by Dulaney’s RCA-Victor Company of Oklahoma City, it was announced today. The Turners will arrive in San Francisco at 1 p.m. Feb. 14 and will go by chartered bus directly to the St. Francis Hotel, where they will stay for four days. The St. Francis Hotel fronts on Garden Square in downtown San Francisco. The itinerary for their first afternoon has been left open so that the vacationers may see San Francisco, Chinatown or other sights of interest. “That is about the only free time we will have as they have plans to keep all of us very busy. There are 91 persons going, and we will all be busy on the schedule they have planned for our entertainment,” Mrs. Turner said. On Feb. 15, the group will go on a 3 ½ hour guided tour of San Francisco, seeing many of the famed sights, including Ocean Beach, Japanese Tea Garden, Yacht Harbor, Steinhart Aquarium. That evening they will be guests for a dinner in the Fairmont Hotel’s Crystal Room. On Feb. 16 they will again go for a 3 ½ hour trip to the famed Muir Woods where they will see the fabled redwoods in all stages of development from month old seedlings to one thousand year old elders, rising 300 feet or more to the sky. On this trip they will cross the Golden Gate Bridge and go on through Sausalito, site of an art colony. On the same afternoon they will take a cruise on a motor launch of the renowned San Francisco Bay, where they will see hundreds of fishing boats bringing in their catch and many other sights including Alcatraz prison, known as the “Rock”. On Sunday, Feb. 17, after a breakfast in the Grill Room of the St. Francis Hotel, they will depart from the International Airport for a non-stop flight back to Oklahoma City and will arrive at 4:40 p.m. City Merchants Frown On Parking Meter Ban As of Jan. 15, through an act of the Holdenville City Council, parking meters in Holdenville have not been in use with a view to encouraging trade with downtown merchants. It was felt that if shoppers did not have to “feed the meters” and pay fines for overtime parking, that customers would come more often and stay longer. But of late, the free parking has created a problem of its own in the opinion of many. The consensus of local merchants is that shoppers are becoming disgruntled because the parking spaces are usually taken in the downtown area and to locate a vacant one within the shopping area presents a task. The Daily NEWS consulted local merchants as to their opinion of the free downtown parking. Here is a sampling: Wallace Haskett, of Haskett’s Men’s Wear, said that “I’d rather the parking meters be used. I think most businessmen feel this way – and in my opinion, meters have proven themselves.” Mrs. L.H. Nichols of Nichols Shoe Store, was outspoken in her opinion. “I’m definitely against the free meters,” she stated, “because businessmen and their employees take all the parking spaces and our customers are left in the cold.” Mrs. Kenneth Hull, of Hulls School and Office Supplies, was less adamant. “I’m not really in favor of he free meters. I haven’t noticed any effects of it in business at the store, but two or three of our customers have complained about the lack of parking spaces,” she said. George Massad, owner of the Vogue, was definite. He said that “IF the business people and their employees would leave the parking area open for customers, it (free parking) might be a good thing. But as it is, I’d rather have the meters in use.” When queried about the meters, Holdenville Mayor Roy Loftis said that, “We work through committees. The street and alley committee will give a report on what we think of it.” “The Holdenville city council set the free parking trial for a period of six weeks. The group is expected to rule as to whether the free parking will continue or the meters used at the February meeting when the six weeks period ends. We love seeing these old photos and hope you enjoy them, too. —DD— I had a good visit with our friend and subscriber David Dossett recently. He is recovering from cataract surgery and is doing well. He helped me identify a few of those in our mystery photo that we have on our website. Some of those he named are Pat Cotton, Bobby, himself, Sarah Howell, Henry Bruner, Janice Sanders, Dixie ?, and Barbara Gordon. I am going to print this picture with the names as soon as I make sure I have them under the right person. We really appreciate David contacting us and hope to have this in the paper soon. —DD— I want to wish our dear friends, Bevo and Nadine Olivo, a very happy 71st Anniversary, which they will be celebrating on Saturday, March 1st. Bevo and Nadine are one of the most well known and loved couples in our county. We pray God’s blessings on them in the days ahead. —DD— And speaking of special occasions our good friend Oda Lee Weatherred celebrated her 80th birthday Wednesday, March 27th. Happy Birthday, Odie!! You certainly don’t look your age! —DD— Also celebrating birthdays this past weekend on the 24th are three of my very dear friends, Tonja Osborn, Tammy Hodge and Leona Buck Brooks! I love you girls! Willie told Bill that Charles recently had a hip replacement and was now in Heritage Village. I know he would enjoy hearing from his friends. Charles is a Korean War Veteran and was a good friend of Meredith’s. He and Willie are two of our favorite people and we are praying that Charles will get to return home soon. —DD— Jerry King and Lofton Crossno were in the office Friday and talking about the “good old days.” Lofton started working for Ben Franklins when he was 14 years old and later bought the store. Lofton and Faye owned and operated the store for many years and all of us still wish it was here. Lofton told about the first time his mother ever let him go to the store alone. They were living in Lamar about a mile from the store. She was going to let him sell eggs in town and give him 10 cents of the money to spend. He was so excited as he went down the road until he came almost face to face with a goat. When he would move left, the goat would move left. When he would move right, the goat would move right. Finally Lofton started crying and ran back home. His first trip to the store alone was a failure and he had no dime to spend! His first business venture may have been a failure because of a goat but for almost fifty years he served a lot of “old goats” and was a great success! Those are Bill’s words, not mine! I think I’m offended because I was one of them! —DD— Friday was a very interesting day. Bill went across the street to the bank to get his popcorn and returned empty handed. I asked him where his popcorn was and he said they didn’t have any because they were having a heart catheter demonstration. I replied, “There is no way they are doing a heart catheterization at the bank!” “Yes they are! Everyone is dressed in red and they told me that is why they are not popping popcorn today. It probably has something to do with the lobby being sterile.” Needless to say I went over to see what was going on. The employees were dressed in red but they were celebrating heart awareness week not demonstrating a heart catheterization! As Bill’s hearing continues to deteriorate I suspect I will hear a growing number of unusual stories! I was relieved to know that First United Bank had not gone into competition with Holdenville General Hospital! —DD— Some of our readers may remember the Holdenville Golf and Country Club which was located east of Holdenville. I can remember Meredith talking about being a caddy there when he was a youngster. This past week we found a story about a Valentine’s party that was going to be held there and named those that had made reservations. It happened 80 years ago this month—here is the story. Valentine Benefit Bridge Party At Country Club Tonight Will Be One of the Largest Affairs of the Year! One of the largest parties of the year will be held at the Holdenville Golf and Country club tonight at 8 o’clock. The party is being given by the Women’s Auxiliary of the club and proceeds will be used to repair and redecorate the club house. Valentine decorations will be used and refreshments served. Contract and auction bridge, rook and other games will be played. Several prizes will be awarded. Many reservations have been made with additional ones being made today. Those in charge are planning for a large group. Tickets are 35 cents. The following had made reservations before today: Mr. and Mrs. M.L. McGee, Mr. and Mrs. G.R. Thanks, Cindy A Valentine Poem Written in 1933 by the late Grace E. Scott-Hahn, of Holdenville LOVE’S EMISSARY — LOVE’S ANSWER *** *** *** *** Valentine’s Day Poem by Grace E. Scott-Hahn LOVE’S EMISSARY (1) Oh! Love, what have you done to me? I fear I’m wounded mortally. Your bow you bent, and your keenest dart, Without a warning, cleft my heart. ‘Twas such a cruel thing to do— To cleave my poor heart thru and thru. ‘Twould not have been such a dreadful tear Had you left your shaft imbedded there; But my heart a captive to your own you bound, And poured no ointment on my wound. Within my breast is but limpid space, Wherein is mirrored your sweet face. Without a heart I cannot live on —Nor can you, dear, with more than one! So a physician true—a friend of mine— (You know him well—St. Valentine--) Says there’s but one thing I can do— And that’s to take your heart from you! On my feeble skill I cannot rely, So Cupid volunteers to try. . . . His quiver’s filled; his bow is trim; His hand is true; I NOW SEND HIM. Will he bring me yours? (‘Twould treasured be!) Or return my wretched own to me? LOVE’S ANSWER (2) So you sent Cupid to capture my heart, With his beautiful bow and feathered love dart! Oh! Dear, who would ever have thought you so stupid, To trust anyone at all, even Cupid. To accomplish a mission of such grave import? (Miles Standish was, really, a far better sport— And all of us know how bold John Alden did it!) Cupid cannot return you my heart, for I hid it. A few hours since, where methought ‘twould be found By my lover, when first he discovered his wound. My heart would do nothing a nice heart should do; Would go ONE; . . . ONE! TWO! THREE! . . . skip FOUR!—then beat TWO! ‘Twas really awful! And self preservation Demanded a change at once—no reservation. Then me thought of my love, and what a strong heart he had (I had heard it pound often when teasing the lad!) So I sang him a love-song, and lulled him to rest, Then, after a kiss on the lips I love best, I began operations—stole his heart as he slept! But, my! What a wound! (I am not an adept At stealing!) That awful hole was a disgrace— So I sewed my own heart up tight into its place! . . . List! A secret I’ll whisper! Look within your own breast And you’ll find my heart lying in the spot I love best!
