“Time and again over the years, you’ve been there to assist
me with equipment, training, or fall protection suggestions
on projects throughout New England. Your hands-on
approach to working with our project managers, superintendents and safety personnel to help solve job related fall
protection issues by recommending the correct equipment
has been very helpful and appreciated. As the Guardian Fall
Protection catalog has grown, so has your ability to provide
useful solutions in a timely manner…we certainly appreciate the efforts that you and Guardian have undertaken to
stock equipment here locally, and to spread the important
message that fall protection is a huge, but solvable (with
help such as yours), issue in our industry. Keep up the good
work!”

“Traditionally we extend the rungs of ladders 3 feet past the
elevation we are accessing. This would have required us to
get all new longer ladders. With the extensions in place the
length of our existing ladders was perfect. The response
from the field was excellent. All of our employees using the
ladders remarked how well they worked and how much
more safe it was to use these extensions to transition from
and to the ladder.”

STRUCTURAL REQUIREMENTS
All anchor points for personal fall arrest and
positioning systems must meet minimum
structural requirements. There are different
requirements depending the approach the
company takes in selecting anchor points.
The following are the minimum structural
requirements for anchorage points:
1. All anchorages must be capable of supporting without failure an impact load of 5,000lbs.
2. The anchorage must be able to support two
(2) times the maximum intended impact load. A
qualified person must determine this.
3. For positioning systems all anchor points
must be able to support 3,000lbs. without
failure.
ENGINEERED ANCHOR POINTS
To determine the two times intended impact
load for anchorages an engineer or qualified
person determines the impact load of a fallen
employee, and ensures the anchor will support
twice this load. For example, if the engineer
determines that the maximum impact load that
the fall will create is 1,400 pounds, and then the
anchor point must be capable of supporting
2,800 pounds. This is a safety factor of two (2),
which OSHA finds acceptable.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT ?
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),
issued a mandate to stop producing CCAtreated lumber for residential construction.
CCA stands for Chromated Copper Arsenate,
which is a wood preservative that contains
Arsenic, which is a known carcinogen (cancer
causing). As a result, lumber manufacturers are
providing “new” wood treatments.
ANC HO RS
It's important to remember that fall
protection is only as good as its
anchorage. It doesn't just matter how
well trained personnel are, how good
the equipment is, or whether or not
the employee tied off correctly. If the anchor
point fails nothing in the system will work.
This change is a great improvement in ensuring
the health of our families, but the “new” chemical treatments for lumber are a cause for
concern when it comes to the use of fasteners
with anchor points. The drawbacks to these
environmentally safer wood treatments is that
they are more corrosive to unprotected metal
fasteners, in fact five times more corrosive to
common steel according to the American Wood
Preservers’ Association. This includes steel
fasteners.
Electrogalvanized nails are not suitable for use
with the “new” formulations due to the higher
corrosion. Industry experts now recommend
the use of hot-dipped galvanized nails, stainless
steel products, or polymer-coated fasteners.
This is why it is extremely important to use
factory approved fasteners only.
Guardian uses only hot-dipped galvanized
fasteners or stainless steel fasteners.
ARE YOU USING FACTORY SUPPLIED
FASTENERS ????
Yes, in most cases you do need to make sure
what you are anchoring to with a Personal Fall
Arrest System or PFAS can withstand a 5,000lbs.
static load. What I find that most contractors do
not think about is whether or not their employees are using factory approved fasteners.

CONCRETE ANCHOR STRAPS
Guardian offers the most extensive line of concrete anchor straps available in the market today. Guardian Fall Protection can
custom design and fabricate concrete strap anchors to meet your needs.
A versatile product, concrete anchor straps are gaining in popularity as an inexpensive anchor solution. As a disposable anchor
point, our straps can be used in other applications such as wood framing members, rebar, pipe racking, etc... As always, make sure
that your anchor strap is attached to a structure capable of supporting 5,000lbs.
For questions, please call 800.466.6385.
This Concrete Anchor Strap (10720) is ideal for use where the
metal D-ring can damage glass or other fragile materials.
10710 is sheathed in heavy-duty nylon webbing to protect
the inner core webbing from abrasion and wear. The Concrete
Anchor Strap is good for one use and must be cut off when
the job is complete.
10705 can be used as a cross-arm strap in residential

A R E YO U P R E P AR E D TO C O MP L Y W I T H
T HE NE W ANSI Z . 3 59 STAND AR D ???
36
Guardian Fall Protection 26609 79th Ave S Kent WA 98032 ph (800) 466.6385 fx (800) 670.7892 www.guardianfall.com
On October 15th, 2007 the new ANSI
Z359 standard for personal fall protection will become effective. There are
important changes in the new standard that contractors and other users
of fall protection must be aware of. First and
foremost, the new standard addresses general
industry and does not impact construction
trades. ANSI is not a requirement that is enforceable by OSHA. ANSI is a voluntary consensus
standard. In detail, the new standards will be:
Z359.1 – Safety requirements for personal fall
arrest systems, subsystems and components
Z359.2 – Minimum requirements for a comprehensive managed fall protection program
Z359.3 – Safety requirements for positioning
and travel restraint systems
Z359.4 – Safety requirements for assisted
rescue and self-rescue systems, subsystems and
components
WOW! That is a lot of info already. So what do
you need to focus in on?
Three of the most significant changes being
pushed by consultants and other manufacturers are as follows:
1. Gate strength for all snaphooks and carabiner
connectors will increase to 3,600lbf, which is a
10 fold increase over current requirements.
Specifically, the gate face must withstand
3,600lbf. and the side gate must withstand
3,600lbf. Why the change? The concern is for
accidental disengagement of the fall protection
system or what some people refer to as “roll out”
or “side loading”.
This new change will provide greater latitude in
making compatible connections. The new standard requires the gate to withstand a static load
of 3,600lbf or twice the maximum loads permitted in a fall arrest system.
Potential Problem!!!! Because of the new standard change, there will be a mix of product on
the market. Training will be critical and strict
adherence to company guidelines will need to
be followed as to whether or not you will recognize the new standard. The biggest market at
risk is the compliance market, those smaller
contractors with limited funds and training
resources.
C O NNEC TO RS
Z359.0 – Definitions and nomenclature used
for fall protection and fall arrest
This means that because of the higher gate
strength, snap hooks and carabiners can now
be attached to a variety of anchorage connecting devices where as previously they could not
for fear of “roll out” or “side loading”.
2. Twin-leg lanyards will be tested to resist a
5,000lbf static load at the point of connection
between the two legs.
3. Finally, full body harnesses with frontal
attachment points will now be rated for limited
fall arrest, up to a 2 feet free fall and a 900lbf
maximum arrest force.
Guardian offers all contractors a TRADE-IN
program for all lanyards or retractables that do
not meet the new ANSI requirement. Simply
cut off your snaphook, and send them into your
authorized Guardian distributor and receive a
5% rebate on your replacement order of
lanyards. In addition, Guardian will apply new
ANSI compliant snap hooks to your existing
Guardian retractables for $20.00 each. This does
not include shipping. Call our office at
800.466.6385 to receive a Repair Authorization
Number for your retractables.

PREMIUM CROSS ARM STRAPS
The Premium Cross Arm Straps are twice as durable with dual enforced webbing
and heavy duty stitching. The heavy duty wear pad protects the structural
webbing against abrasion and snags. The Premium Cross Arm Strap features a
large D-ring and standard size D-ring for pass through, this increases the
versatility of length adjustment. To shorten the anchorage connector simply
wrap the webbing around the anchorage and pass through the large D-ring.

Rebar Positioning Devices allow workers to lean away from
walls while keeping their hands free. Must be accompanied
by a harness with side positioning D-rings, such as the
Guardian HUV-3 (Part # 01110). Free fall must be limited to
under 2 feet if not using a fall arrest system.
Positioning device systems are combinations of equipment
which are intended to permit the user to use both hands
freely while being supported on an elevated vertical surface
as in rebar and concrete form work.
Our unit is designed to comply the latest, most stringent
requirements of ANSI A10.32-2004, among which:
• Chain must be grade 80 and 9/32” or greater
• Overall minimum tensile strength of 5,000lbs.

EDGE SERIES HD RETRACTABLES
FEATURES
The Guardian Heavy Duty Retractable is designed to be used
specifically for leading edge work. With an integrated shock pack
attached to the cable lifeline, the retractable will keep the arresting forces below 900lbs. while at the same time reducing the
amount of impact forces on the cable lifeline itself. The ideal
position of a retractable, when used as a part of a PFAS, is directly
overhead. Often, contractors will place a retractable on the deck
and use it at foot level. Almost all retractables on the market are
not allowed to be used in this manner if the worker is exposed to
a leading edge hazard.
HEAVY DUTY SHOCK
PACK WITH PROTECTIVE
REMOVABLE COVER FOR
EASE OF INSPECTION
The integrated shock pack onto the retractable lifeline will help
reduce the impact forces of the cable as it comes into contact with
the leading edge. For more information, please contact your local

It is critical that when prior to installing a Horizontal Lifeline, temporary or
permanent, that a Qualified person is
available on site. OSHA states: "Qualified" means one who, by possession of
a recognized degree, certificate, or professional
standing, or who by extensive knowledge, training and experience, has successfully demonstrated his ability to solve or resolve problems
relating to the subject matter, the work, or the
project (fall protection).
LI FELINE SYSTEMS
The potential risk associated with a nondesigned system, installed without the guidance of a Qualified Person, is tremendous. If one
worker were to fall and the other workers
attached to the same system are pulled off, will
the structure to which the HLL system is
anchored withstand the horizontal and vertical
forces a fall generates, resulting in a sudden
failure of the anchorage and support structure.
Did you know that the use of a 6ft. lanyard
versus a SRL, create different impact forces on
the system and varying arresting distances?
C O NNEC TO RS
One of the most critical roles a Qualified Person
performs is the design, installation, and supervision of Horizontal Lifelines. The insight a QP
provides is extremely valuable because there
are many design and use factors involved with
HLL systems, such as feasibility, swing fall, clear
height distances, anchorage systems, personal
fall protection systems, workplace activities,
required worker mobility, and prompt rescue.
In many cases, you will find that the CP is not
adequately trained and experienced in the
areas of fall hazard abatement and rescue and
he may even select the wrong fall protection
system. The CP cannot alter the “designed”
system at anytime without the QP’s approval. It
is highly recommended to document any
changes. Other responsibilities of the Competent Person include day-to-day verification of
the HLL system and its components, cable sag,
proper rescue plan prior to the commencement
of work, trained users on the system. The Competent Person is responsible for the workers
using the system.
For more information on the installation and
use of Horizontal Lifeline systems, please call us
at 800.466.6385.
Don’t forget, other design and use considerations include clear height distance, allowable
cable sag, proper selection of personal fall arrest
equipment, and specifications for the cable
materials. Also, consider the possibility that you
might need to rescue more than one worker,
the more individuals on a system, the more
rescue systems must be available.
It is also important to consider the role of the
Competent Person and how they interact with
the role of the Qualified Person. If properly
trained, a CP can oversee the installation of a
Horizontal Lifeline designed by a Qualified
Person.

TURNKEY SOLUTIONS FOR PERMANENT
LIFELINE APPLICATIONS
Guardian Fall Protection services include: fall protection risk assessment, fall protection system design, system engineering, fall
arrest component fabrication, safety equipment installation, fall arrest component testing, fall protection training programs, and
a fall protection equipment recertification program.
STEP 1
ASSESSMENT
Guardian will walk with you and review your facility and
identify fall hazards. We will then put together a written
report to include pictures of the areas in question and recommend solutions to abate the hazard.
STEP 2
DESIGN
The design variables Guardian will consider include:
• The available support structure
• The work area
• Obstructions
• Worker mobility requirements
We can design a fall protection solution tailored to a specific
application and environment.
STEP 3
ENGINEERING
Once the basic fall protection solution is determined, our
team of engineers establishes critical technical specifications
to assure system integrity and cost compliance. This process
determines end-load conditions, support requirements,
deflection, ultimate loads and similar engineering details.
STEP 6
TESTING
After installation of the fall protection system is complete, the
testing phase begins. ALL of the fall arrest components are
visually inspected and load tests are performed in accordance with our strict testing procedures.
STEP 7
TRAINING
Once the system has been tested and is ready for use, our
expert training team will consult with your employees and
make sure that they understand how to safely use the
engineered fall protection system.
STEP 8
RE-CERTIFICATION AND TRAINING
Our turnkey solution provides a system that is certified to
meet or exceed all safety performance specifications. This is
your assurance that the installed system will fully meet applicable engineering and performance standards. On an annual
basis, Guardian offers a re-certification and repair program.
The annual inspection of your fall arrest system and components guarantees the fall protection equipment for another
year. This system inspection is important to maintain the
integrity of the performance standards in any environment.
STEP 4
QUOTE
Guardian will provide you a cost effective solution along with
all the support information so that the best decision can be
made.
STEP 5
FABRICATION AND INSTALLATION
One of the key reasons our systems are cost effective is
because our systems are typically a turnkey type solution.
When the need arises, we can fabricate custom components
to support our turnkey products. Once the job has been
approved, we will move our experienced field team into
action. The construction crew prepares the job prior to
moving on site and our team will adhere strictly to the fall
arrest system engineered drawings and specifications. This
assures a completed project that delivers 100% of its
intended performance.

ROPE & CABLE SYSTEMS
WHITE POLYDAC™ ROPE
Polydac™ rope is one of the strongest conventional ropes available today. The Polydac™ rope is
100% resistant to rot or mildew even if stored wet. Polydac™ rope absorbs more energy than
any other type of rope available today, 12 times as much as Manila and 50% more than polyester. The working load elongation is 8%. Polydac™ rope has excellent resistance to alkalis and
most solvents. Polydac™ rope provides good abrasion protection, but UV rays still degrade all
synthetic fibers. Polydac™ rope has a melting point of over 300 degrees.
11329
11321
BLUE POLY STEEL ROPE
Blue Poly Steel rope is exclusive to Guardian. It is ideal for environments that are found to be
more damp or wet. Nylon rope, when wet, will become 10% to 15% weaker than dry ropes.
While the strength does return when Nylon rope dries out, the Blue Poly Steel will hold up
better in these types of environments as they do not absorb water. Blue Poly Steel is particularly
strong when it comes to Ultra-Violet light damage. The synthetic make up of Blue Poly Steel
gives the rope excellent abrasion resistant characteristics resulting in a longer life. The Guardian
exclusive Blue Poly Steel is 10X stronger than Polypropylene. While the rope will become
fibrous, this does not mean it needs to be replaced. This is a result of normal everyday wear.
Added to all lifeline assemblies is our
removable nylon shock pack cover (00990)
for longer life of the system.
01310
62
Add our twist-free snap hook (01825) to any
rope assembly for longer life of the rope.

No one can ever predict when or how
a person will fall while working from
heights. The award winning and revolutionary Edge Series of Harnesses
was designed with this in mind.
In 2007, the Edge Harness received a Gold International Design Excellence Award and recognized by Business Week magazine. In conjunction with a design team who has worked with
Nike®, Microsoft®, Leupold® and Steven®,
Guardian set out to design the safest and most
versatile harness on the market. The unique
design was engineered to provide three key
benefits.
“Our goal was to bring an extremely dependable and safe harness to market that is highly
comfortable and capable of being tailor made
to the likes and dislikes of the user” said Ed
Marquardt, President of Guardian Fall Protection.
With the buckle configurations and various
color options, the Edge harness comes in over
450 different styles to choose from. While we
do keep a large amount in inventory, please
be aware that the custom orders can take up
to 3 weeks depending on quantity.
1. The Edge Harness reduces impact forces
unlike any other harness on the market as its
unique design absorbs up to 23% more energy
than other conventional harnesses. This, in
conjunction with the use of a shock absorbing
lanyard, creates less risk of injury in a fall as a
result of impact forces.
HARNESSES
2. The Edge Harness was specifically designed
for a head first free fall and to limit the sliding
effect of the dorsal D-ring. Because of the vest
style design, the Edge is more likely to work
properly in a head first freefall versus a conventional harness. In addition, the dorsal D-ring of
the Edge Harness is designed to limit the likelihood of the D-ring striking a worker in the back
of the head in the event of a fall. A dorsal D-ring
striking the back of the worker in the head
during a fall could cause a concussion and
contribute to suspension trauma.
3. Comfort and style was important in the
design as it creates a product that workers will
want to wear. The Edge can incorporate the use
of a hydration pack and or cool packs. The
Hypolon protective shell is UV resistant, waterproof, and abrasion proof. This is key feature of
the harness as UV degradation occurs most
commonly on the shoulders and deltoid areas
of the harness. The Edge harness is ideal with
the use of retractables as the webbing will not
pull away from the body which could result in
added worker fatigue.

This unique pocket is part
of the back pad in every

This pocket can house a
Cool pack, a Heat pack or

There is a velcro opening
at the top for the insert
and a small opening at
the bottom for the Hydrapack straw.
70% of all structural
webbing on the Edge

durable water and weatherproof
Hypolon. This
helps limit abrasion and
exposure to UV rays and
corrosive chemicals. The
hypolon can be unzipped
to view and inspect the
webbing.

This adjustment area
allows 4 inches of chest
strap adjustment. All Edge
Series harnesses feature a
“Quick Adjust” friction

release tab.
The padded waist belt is
made of a closed cell foam
with a mesh lining that
allows the material to
breathe. All the structural
webbing on the belt that
is usually at risk for
abrasion is covered by a
durable hypolon that lifts
for inspection.
Our innovative tool belt
features a slide on strap
that can be completely
removed in a fall situation
to relieve some of the
weight. Slide your own
bags onto this light
weight application, or use
your regular tool bag over
this application.

This fastener style is easy
to use and will not loosen
with weight or movement. It is used in the leg
and waist area. 1 3/4”
grommet spacing is
important for proper
adjustment.
State of the art push
release buckles are rated
at 5,000 lbs. The unique
design requires both tabs
to be compressed to
release the male end. This
feature protects against
accidental release.
A cradle seat or sub-pelvic

COOL-HEAT-HYDRATION POUCH
HYDRAPACK®
This unique pocket is part of the back pad in every
Premium Edge Harness. This pocket can house a Cool
pack, a Heat pack or our 50 oz. hydration pack. There is a
velcro opening at the top for the insert and a small
opening at the bottom for the Hydrapack® straw.
When the body is unable to cool itself from sweating,
serious heat illness may occur. The most severe heat
induced illnesses are heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
OSHA recommends workers who are exposed to high
temperatures and humidity try to stay cool and
consume about a cup of water every 15 to 20 minutes.

LEG UP SUSPENSION TRAUMA STRAP
SUSPENSION TRAUMA SYNDROME or possibly referred to as
harness-induced pathology, suspension syncopal incident,
prolonged motionless suspension syndrome simply post-fall
faint can possibly cause injury or even death if not immediately
addressed. A written rescue plan is not enough. Jobsite specific
training and the availability and knowledge in the use of rescue
equipment is paramount to responding in time to a situation.
WHAT IS IT?
If you stand for a long period of time, gravity pulls blood into the tissue of
our leg and subsequently the heart is not strong enough to pull it back up,
if enough blood collects in the legs, you will faint.
When someone falls in a harness, a dangerous situation can occur
especially if the victim becomes injured and unable to move or the
individual is left suspended for a long period of time. Blood will begin to
pool in the legs and sometimes, in less than five minutes, the victim can
faint. The situation becomes further complicated as the harness webbing
around the legs can restrict the flow of blood altogether by cutting flow off
of the Femoral Artery.
1. Blood Clot
2. Femoral Artery
HARNESSES
Depending on the physical conditioning of the victim; secondary injuries,
general cardiovascular health, initial sizing and fit testing of the harness
and adjustments, the victim could reach a critical situation in five to fifteen
minutes. This is why it is particularly important to train workers on how to
wear a harness and properly fit a harness. Not wearing a harness correctly
can create a greater risk of injury.
WHAT TO DO?
1. Make sure your organization has a rescue plan that is specific to each
jobsite. Not all construction sites are the same.
2. Train your employees on what to do in the event an employee has fallen
and needs to be rescued. Training is highly effective and must not be over
looked. Calling 911 is standard operating procedure, however calling 911
doesn’t mean they can respond or even know how to respond.
3. Have the proper equipment including but not limited to a suspension
trama strap of which a number of fall protection manufacturers provide.
This could also include a long vertical lifeline assembly, if lowered, the
fallen victim might be able to grasp the line and make a knot to lift the
weight off of their legs. If the fallen victim is incapacitated, using a long
piece of rope, the other employees could loop the rope underneath the
victims knees to raise and lower them. Try to get the knees up high
enough so that the thighs are horizontal. This will help keep the blood
circulating. Do not attempt any of these suggestions without first receiving proper training by a qualified individual.
4. Once rescued, the conscious/ unconscious victim should never be fully
reclined to a horizontal position under any circumstances. The violent
release of the trapped blood volume, increased blood pressure and
change in heart rate could seriously damage the heart or release blood
clots into the system. Try and keep the victims upper spine vertical or no
more than 60 degrees from horizontal. Keep the victim warm in either a
crouch or sitting with legs out for at least 45 to 60 minutes. Do not attempt
any of these suggestions without first receiving proper training by a qualified person.

SERAPH HARNESS FEATURES
INSPECTION LOG TAG
ADJUSTABLE CHEST STRAP
SHOULDER PADS
This feature tells the user if
the equipment has been
loaded in a fall situation. If
the indicator is pulled and
the full tag is showing, the
harness should be removed
from service.
Keep
track
of
OSHA
mandated inspections by
using the monthly log on our
durable inspection tag. The
material is ideal for writing
on with a permanent marker.
It is important to properly
size the equipment in the
chest so the strap does not
rise underneath the chin in a
fall. Chest strap stays in place
once it is adjusted to fit.
Closed cell foam shoulder
pads increase comfort and
reduce the fatigue caused by
the weight of tools hanging
on the harness and shoulders.
FRICTION BUCKLE
PASS THROUGH BUCKLE
TONGUE BUCKLE
QUICK-CONNECT BUCKLE
This type of strap adjustment
makes
tightening
and
loosening straps easy. The
notched sliding dowel holds
straps firmly in place. Lift up
on the release tab to loosen.
This notched buckle fastens
without twisting for a quick
and easy connection and
release every time.
This fastener style is easy to
use and will not loosen with
weight or movement. It is
used in the leg and waist
area. 1 3/4” grommet spacing
is important for proper
adjustment.
State of the art push release
buckles are rated at 5,000 lbs.
The unique design requires

feature protects against

STRETCH POINTS
SUB-PELVIC STRAP
TOOL KEEPER
PADDED WAIST BELT
Instead of making a harness
that stretches out of proportion and sags with the
weight of tools, we have
added stretch points to
increase movement where
you need it.
A cradle seat or sub-pelvic
strap helps distribute body
weight evenly across the legs
and pelvis in a fall. This helps
relieve the pressure of the
leg straps on the leg arteries.
Use this durable plastic
coated tool keeper to store a
hammer or clip a carabiner.
It’s located on the hip of the
Seraph Construction Series
harnesses for easy tool
access.
The weight of tools puts
great pressure on the lower
back. A sturdy cordura
covered foam padding is
placed between the tools
and the back to distribute
weight and increase comfort.
SIDE POSITIONING D-RINGS
ADJUSTABLE DORSAL D-RING
D-RING LANYARD KEEPERS
LANYARD KEEPERS
Positioning D-rings are
backed with heavy duty
cordura and a wear pad to
increase durability.
OSHA mandates that every
harness worn must fit
properly.
The adjustable
D-ring stays between the
user’s shoulders.
This type of lanyard keeper
conveniently doubles as a
rescue retrieval hoist. One on
each side of the chest for
lanyard storage.
Lanyard keepers reduce the
risk of dragging and snagging lanyards. The keeper is
on the chest to make the
lanyard end more accessible.

LADDER SAFETY
The American National Standards
Institute recommends setting ladders
at a 75.5 degree angle. Findings from
a Liberty Mutual Research study
found that adjusting a ladder’s angle a mere 10
degrees from 75 to 65 degrees almost doubles
the friction required to hold the ladder in place.
This increases by 7 percent if the worker quickly
climbs the ladder at an above rate.
How can you use your ladder more safely?
Follow these simple guidelines...
• Keep eyes on the ladder and pay attention to
hand and foot placement
• Stay off the top two rungs of a straight or
extension ladder and the top step and cap of a
step ladder.
* Information provided from an article on
www.occupationalhazards.com. Author: Ted
Christensen is director of contracting services at
the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety.
1. SELECT THE RIGHT LADDER FOR THE JOB:
• Never use wood or metal ladders for electrical
work
• Don’t use a step ladder where a straight ladder
is needed and vice versa
• Check ladder capacity and strength
• Read and follow all manufacturer instructions
3. USE SAFE CLIMBING TECHNIQUES:
• Don’t rush
• Face the ladder and use both hands while
climbing up or down
• Apply the three-point rule: Keep at least both
feet and one hand or both hands and one foot
on the ladder at all times
• Clear the area around the ladder of debris and
materials
• Clean mud and grease from the footwear
before climbing
• Carry tools in pockets or belt or hoist them on
a rope
ACCESSORIES
2. INSPECT YOUR LADDER:
• Get help to move or set up heavy and
awkward ladders
• Erect the ladder on a solid, level surface and
install a manufacturer approved “leveler” if
using on uneven surfaces
• Secure base when raising an extension ladder
and never set up when extended. Watch for wet
or muddy surfaces
• Check ladder angle
• Tie off and extend the ladder 36 to 42” above
the dismount level when stepping off at a
higher level
• Secure the ladder against displacement by
tying it at the top or the bottom or both,
depending on the conditions

GUARDIAN LADDER LEVEL DEVICE
The only “Ladder Angle Verification Device” in the world.
This patent pending safety product is designed to make
sure the worker has the ladder at a proper angle. While a
4 to 1 ratio is the most common approach, the Angle Rite
product places the ladder at exactly a 75.5 degree angle.
This makes the ladder much safer to use.
The most common ladder accident is when the ladder
base slips out of position. This can happen when the
ladder is at a wrong angle.

Guardian is committed to delivering
safe, dependable, cost competitive fall
protection solutions to the construction industry. Every day, our QC
department pulls random items for
batch testing along with performing regularly
scheduled inspection of items prior to shipment. Each product that leaves our building
receives a number of inspection stickers for us
to use during our auditing processes and when
addressing any customer concerns.
Tommy Lee, Director of Quality Control, leads
our team of QC personnel to make sure your
products meet and most often exceed ANSI and
OSHA standards. On a daily basis we subject
our products to both dynamic performance
testing and dynamic strength testing on our
testing tower. In addition, we perform static
load testing on a variety of anchor points, webbing, and various other hardware components.
Every quarter, our testing facility and records
are audited by a third party, CSA. Guardian goes
above and beyond the required testing as we
have exposed our products to a variety of
environmental conditions to test the overall
durability and life expectancy of our product.
“We want to see how the product performs in a
testing facility after it returns from the abusive
jobsite environments. Pushing products to
their limits helps us design better and safer
equipment.” said Tommy Lee.

Tommy Lee works with engineering from the
outset of product development to make sure
processes for manufacturing and QC inspection
are drafted and trained upon. The engineering
team works with a variety of Fortune 500 organizations to develop stronger, longer lasting
materials that we can then incorporate in our
products. “We are focusing a great deal of
resources on the investment of new technologies to bring better products to market. It is
amazing the number of advancements that
have been made in terms of webbing and hardware components. The new products scheduled for release in 2008 are very exciting” said
Ed Marquardt, President of Guardian Fall Protection.

A confined space is defined as an area
which has adequate size and configuration for employee entry; has limited
means of access or egress; and is not
designed for continuous employee
occupancy. According to OSHA, if a "permitrequired" confined space of 5 feet or more
exists, a retrieval system, comprised of nonentry rescue equipment, must be used. OSHA
also mandates the use of personal protective
equipment (i.e. full-body harnesses) in "permitrequired" confined spaces.
Permit-required confined spaces, 1910.146(3) in
order to facilitate non-entry rescue, retrieval
systems or methods shall be used whenever an
authorized entrant enters a permit space, unless
retrieval equipment would increase the overall
risk of entry or would not contribute to the
rescue of the entrants.
Examples of confined spaces include: tanks,
silos, storage bins, process vessels, pipelines,
sewers, double hulls, underground utility vaults,
boilers, pits, and vats.
DID YOU KNOW?
Two-thirds or 66% of all confined space fatalities occur among would-be rescuers.
WHY DO SO MANY FATALITIES RESULT FROM
EMERGENCY RESCUES?
Fatalities can occur when the rescuers:
• Are overcome by their emotions
• Take unnecessary chances
• Do not know the hazards involved
• Do not have a plan of action
• Lack confined space rescue training
Confined space rescue retrieval equipment is
only a part of a properly managed confined
space entry program. Contact your local
distributor, OSHA office, or Guardian Fall Protection at 800.466.6385 to learn more.

Falls from heights occur from a variety
of work surfaces that involve ladders,
scaffolding, roofs, work on other unsecured surfaces, unprotected openings,
speed, and weather conditions.
Recognizing fall protection strategies, such as
guardrails, toe boards, tying off to appropriate
anchors, and guarding openings, can prevent a
number of falls; however these practices are still
not the norm on many job sites.
(vi) The correct procedures for the handling
and storage of equipment and materials and

costs the employer $8000.00.
• The average cost savings associated with
injury prevention is an estimated $24,842 a year.
OSHA 1926.503 (a)(1) states the employer shall
provide a training program for each employee
who might be exposed to fall hazards. The
program shall enable each employee to recognize the hazards of falling and shall train each
employee in the procedures to be followed in
order to minimize these hazards.
OSHA 1926.503 (a)(2) states that the employer
shall assure that each employee has been
trained, as necessary, by a competent person
qualified in the follow areas:
(i) The nature of fall hazards in the work area.

OSHA & ANSI STANDARDS
ALL GUARDIAN FALL PROTECTION PRODUCTS MEET APPLICABLE OSHA AND ANSI REQUIREMENTS
The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) under Title 29 of the Code of Federal Regulations (29
CFR) assures and enforces safe and healthful working conditions for general industry and construction in the United States. Under the Act, employers have the duty of providing their workers with a
place of employment free from recognized safety and health hazards.
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a voluntary organization made up of manufacturers and consumers that establish product performance standards for fall protection safety. Meeting the standards indicates that products pass accepted testing procedures. The standards are not
enforceable as law, however many OSHA regulations are adopted from ANSI standards.
Employers should obtain copies of the regulations that apply to their work operations by writing to:

Why fall protection fails…
1. FAILURE TO IDENTIFY OTHER
MEANS OF PROTECTION VERSUS
THE USE OF A FALL ARREST SYSTEM
Employees are much safer when the option of
the safe elimination of the fall hazard is utilized.
Consider using guardrails, scaffolding, or
restraint systems before using a personal fall
arrest system.
2. FAILURE TO IDENTIFY A PROPER ANCHORAGE CONNECTOR
No matter how well built the harness and
lanyards are, if the anchor is not strong enough,
the system will not work as designed. Always
make sure your anchorage connector is of
adequate strength and meets 5,000lbs or as
directed by a “Qualified Person”. Always look for
an anchorage connector overhead when
possible and avoid swing falls. A swing fall can
be just as deadly as falling and hitting the
ground or an object below.
3. FAILURE TO INSTRUCT AND TRAIN
PERSONNEL
You must make sure to properly train your
employees as to the fall hazards of a given
jobsite and or work task being performed.
Many employers fail to consider the actual
training on the use of the equipment being
used. Don’t make the mistake of assuming the
worker knows how to use and or even read the
instructions that accompany the product. Train,
train, and then retrain.
5. FAILURE TO USE PRODUCT AS DESCRIBED
BY THE MANUFACTURER
The equipment is only as good as it is used and
often the simple fitting of a harness is done
improperly. Take the time to adjust the harness
for the correct fit. Make sure that you are using
the right equipment for the given job and the
hazards associated with the work. When you
have limited clearance of a lower surface, a
retractable might be needed versus a standard
6ft. shock absorbing lanyard.
6. FAILURE TO PLAN
It is imperative in our litigious society that you
properly document your fall protection plan
and make it specific for a particular job. Failure
to properly plan and document that plan can
cause a huge amount of problems down the
road.
7. ASSUMPTIONS
Make no assumptions about what the plan is to
protect your workers, the maintenance of your
equipment, identification of the proper anchor
point, or the knowledge of your employees.
Falling at a rate of 32ft per second squared, you
will have no time to go back and fix what went
wrong.
4. FAILURE TO REMOVE UNSAFE OR OUTDATED EQUIPMENT
There are specific regulations and manufacture
guidelines to follow in the proper inspection,
use, and maintenance of your fall protection
equipment. A rule of thumb in terms of the life
of the fall protection equipment is that the
product expires 5 years from date of first use.
Follow manufacturers’ guidelines as to the
proper inspection criteria to be followed.
* Guardian assumes no liability as to the information contained in this catalog. You are responsible
to check the policies of your company and refer to
state and federal regulations pertaining to the
proper use of fall protection equipment.

“Thank you for coming to the Baker Rock Resources' Dayton
facility at the very early hour of 06:30 a.m., and speaking to
the Dayton gentlemen about fall protection. Guardian's
presentation was very informational, and I believe you held
everyone's interest! Numerous comments were made from
people who were not able to attend; they heard they
missed a good meeting! Equal remarks were made the
same day on your presentation to the McMinnville shop
personnel.”
Kim I. Meacham
