King regards… Trish (Pres) DAYLIGHT SAVING STARTS ON SUNDAY OCTOBER 6Th TURN YOUR CLOCKS FORWARD 1 HOUR. MUSIC BY THE LAKE SUNDAY 15TH SEPTEMBER This was something new that the Social Club put on for a pleasant and relaxing Sunday Afternoon. The numbers were down a bit but those who attended enjoyed the atmosphere it provided. The bar was open and free snacks were also provided. The music was very enjoyable. Some folks took the opportunity to have a dance, or have a good chat with friends, also meet new folks or catching up with news. There was no set program. As ours is a large village we don’t always get to meet up with everyone, but this afternoon was just the thing to solve that problem. The photos above are some of the crowd that were having a restful and very happy time. With the end of the year looming up it’s just what we needed, a time to reflect on our busy times. Nothing like sitting down and doing nothing!! We are a jolly crowd and you would be made most welcome. Just like the three new players who have joined us over the last week or two. If you would like extra cash for Christmas, come along to the hall Monday at 1-30. Every few weeks we have a lucky door prize of a $25 shopping voucher. We do ask that you do your best to arrive a little early, as this enables us to get “eyes down” at 1-30 sharp. We follow the games with a little chat and a nice cuppa. Looking forward to your company. Jean & Mick COBAKI COBBA's SOCIAL LAWN BOWLS; Our morning trip out to Cudgen Bowls on Sunday, September 15th was a great success. Our bowlers played alongside bowlers from Cudgen, Tweed Heads & Kingscliff. All had a great time on the greens. We started the morning off on arrival with coffee/tea & homemade cakes etc. After bowls & formalities we had some very tasty fish, chips & salad for lunch. The club allowed us to have our raffles with theirs so between us we both came out with a profit. It was decided at our monthly meeting in September not to have a meeting in October, but in its place we arranged to visit Condong Bowls on October 6th. As always, Condong is a good club to visit. Our 'big' trip away from October 25th / 27th to Woolgoolga & Evans Heads is coming around quickly. Our last Bowls day for this year will be on Sunday, November 17th. We will be visiting Pottsville for Bowls & Lunch. Please keep a look out on the notice board for the list & details. Next monthly meeting will be on November 3rd in the Rec Hall at 10.30am DST where we will be discussing this years Xmas Party which will be on Sunday, December 8th in the Rec Hall. Thanks to all our helpers at Sausage sizzle after our meeting in September. Jim (M) SINGLE GIRLS. We went off to Mount Tamborine at the end of September, and saw the open gardens Spring Festival there, we were also blessed with lovely weather for the day. That was followed by some retail therapy in he main shopping street. In October a mystery trip is being planned—if anyone is interested watch the notice board. If you would like to join our group we meet in the hall on Wednesday mornings at 10am for a short quick meeting followed by cuppa and a chat. Do come and join us. Jean _________________________________________________________________ During a lady's medical examination, the doctor says:- "Your heart, lungs, pulse and blood pressure are all fine. Now let me see the bit that gets you ladies into all kinds of trouble." The lady starts taking off her underwear but is interrupted by the doctor. "No! No! Don't remove your clothes... Just stick out your tongue!" EXERCISE Not much happening early in the morning in the Rec Hall other than the usual number of ladies keeping up their exercises with the music. Still could do with a few more ladies (or gents) to come along and join in. Chris & Elizabeth have been keeping up with things recently. Thanks again ladies! Chris also has been spending some of our 'Social Club Bonus' on cleaning tapes etc in order to keep the DVD's running smoothly. Join in on Tue, Wed & Thurs mornings in the Rec Hall 7.00am - 7.45am. Denise INDOOR BOWLS: A few of our bowlers have been on holidays so our numbers have been down. It still hasn't stopped the others from having lots of fun and making plenty of noise throughout the morning. All have a great time along with morning tea of cakes & biscuits. A good way to pass a couple of hours away with some very friendly members. Come along and see for yourselves how easy it is and what fun you can have. Rec Hall Monday mornings 9.30am -11.30am Jim (M) CANASTA Once again I’m battling to find enough to write about. However, a couple of our world-trippers have returned and numbers are starting to built up again. Still a few with health problems and a couple away on holidays. Our congrats to Jim who, after an operation and an arm in plaster, managed to turn up on the day of his discharge from hospital and play one-handed with the assistance of a card holder. That’s what I call dedication. And what about the two travellers who arrived back from England in the morning and came along in the afternoon for cards, rather blearyeyed but determined to see the day out. We would like to welcome some new members, so if you are interested, come along and join our happy group. No charge. Wednesday-1.00 to 4.30pm with a break for afternoon tea. Joy COBAKI SOCIAL GOLF. A good sunny day was had again this month. We had 10 players,3 ladies and 7 men with 18 for our B.B.Q later with our usual fun and banter. Our winners were Carol Cannon and Gary Parker. well done! It was good to see Bruce Wall able to join us after his hospital stay. We welcomed a new player Kerry Paine. Kerry has very kindly offered his Golf experience to help our players streamline their game, thank you Kerry. We will keep you informed on that as we work it out with Kerry. Our next game is on 16th Oct. 10 am hit off. Maggie and Geoff . GOLF CROQUET. The Group have been enjoying fabulous weather fora change. We have organised play every Saturday morning from 8.30am on the greens overlooking the lake down from the D.K.Centre. It costs nothing to play and it’s just a short walk from your home. Club Championships are currently being run and 12 players are competing in a 6 weeks tournament with two rounds being completed each Saturday. In theory everyone plays with every other person and plays against every other person. Current leader after two weeks is Maureen closely followed by Una and Barry, Even though the comp is in full swing, there is room for any new players wanting to come along and try out this wonderful game and coaching is provided free. Happy swinging and hoop running. Hannah We do apologise for omitting to include Golf Croquet in September edition, it was an oversight on our part. Kath & Harry. COMPUTER CLUB Hi Boys and girls, what a terrific winter we had, and now a lovely Spring. We do have a great part of the world to live in, don’t we? We welcomed a new resident last Friday who has a problem with trying to get wireless internet connection. The usual (to villagers) trouble of lack of signal. Fortunately Roy was able to help as he has recently done the same thing, there being no ’ports’ available at the tweed Heads Exchange, for normal ADSL broadband hookup. This also means NONE of the Internet Service Providers can give us ADSL service. If you get the chance to sign a petition asking Malcolm Turnbull, Minister for communications, to reconsider the NBN with a view to giving people like us and all regional areas a modern, non-copper wire system, PLEASE do it! There is such a petition going on the internet, I have signed it and sent it on to other people. If you want to have a chat about computers and technology, come along on Fridays at 10 o’clock in the D.K.Centre. Mac TRIVIA. Will need a few more players if we are to continue. However we still had fun. Why not come along and observe. You will find that you don’t have to be Einstein. We will also find someone for you to play with if necessary. Last month’ Anzacs’ were first Second were Emu’s and third were the ‘Vics’. There iseven reverse winner’s prize, won by ‘Shocking’. Our newest player Graham was happy with the Lucky Door Prize. Let’s see you all next month. 6.30 on Wed November 6th. Myrna & Sisters. CRAFT. C The train was quite crowded, and a U.S. Marine walked the entire length looking for a seat, but the only seat left was taken by a well dressed, middle -aged, French woman's poodle. The war-weary Marine asked, 'Ma'am, may I have that seat?' The French woman just sniffed and said to no one in particular. ' Americans are so rude. My little Fifi is using that seat. 'The Marine walked the entire train again, but the only seat left was under that dog. 'Please, ma'am. May I sit down? I'm very tired.' She snorted, 'Not only are you Americans rude, you are also arrogant! 'This time the Marine didn't say a word; he just picked up the little dog, tossed it out of the train window, and sat down. The woman shrieked, 'Someone must defend my honour! This American should be put in his place!' An English gentleman sitting nearby spoke up, 'Sir, you Americans seem to have a penchant for doing the wrong thing. You hold the fork in the wrong hand. You drive your cars on the wrong side of the road. And now, sir, you seem to have thrown the wrong bitch out of the window'. AQUA AEROBICS. What glorious weather we are having. A few of us have ben testing the water as well as the memory over the last few weeks, pleased to say all is well on both counts. Hope to see many of the new residents in October. We meet at 7.am Monday to Friday all welcome. Tess BUS TRIPS. We have just had our trip to Lismore. Our next trip will be in the first week of November, have not decided on the location as yet. Faye is from Burleigh and enjoys walking , teaching ceramics, food and cooking. On her first night here she went to tavern Night and met up with some new folks. LESLEY & KEVIN WILSON came from Paynesville, they originally came from New Zealand. Kevin told us that his favourite things are gardening, reading, fishing and falling asleep reading!! Lesley has already been to the computer group, she likes reading and cooking, but seeing she has put herself on a diet that may have to be slowed down. Thank you for giving us your time for a chat, a very big welcome to Cobaki. ********************************* If you thought that Joan & Arthur Mears had a house with no number, that was not right. They moved into house 99 and now all settled in. Sorry about that must have been a computer error!!!!!!! BLACK & WHITE BALL. The night was enjoyed by 60 odd folks who danced the night away to first class music. It was even a delight just to sit back and take it all in. When you have terrific company, a glass in your hand of your favourite beverage, music we loved and we were never drowned out by, the result is great night. The band seemed to know all the right things to help make the night the big success that it was. We did some old time dances, after a few starts to get it right, even bought back the popular barn dance. That proved to be a winner. Supper was served on tables that were set up in the middle of the dance floor and it was a help yourself. There was plenty of very tasty food, followed by delicious sweets. All in all, it was another first class night. Everyone looked stunning in their black & white and the hall decorations were superb. Our Social Club committee have done it once again another function that if you missed it you missed a fun filled night. MORE PHOTOS FROM THE BALL. PLENTY OF HAPPY FACES GARDEN SNAKES CAN BE DANGEROUS... Green Tree Snakes can be dangerous. Yes, tree snakes or grass snakes, not brown snakes or taipans. Here's why. A couple in Townsville, had a lot of potted plants. During a recent cold winter (for Townsville that is!), the wife was bringing some of the valued tender ones indoors to protect them from the cold night. It turned out that a little green tree snake was hidden in one of the plants. When it had warmed up, it slithered out and the wife saw it go under the lounge. She let out a very loud scream. The husband (who was taking a shower) ran out into the living room naked to see what the problem was. She told him there was a snake under the lounge. He got down on the floor on his hands and knees to look for it. About that time the family dog came and cold-nosed him on the behind. He thought the snake had bitten him, so he screamed and fell over on the floor. His wife thought he had had a heart attack, so she covered him up, told him to lie still and called an ambulance. The paramedics rushed in, would not listen to his protests, loaded him on the stretcher, and started carrying him out. About that time, the snake came out from under the lounge and the paramedic saw it and dropped his end of the stretcher. That's when the man broke his leg and why he is still in the hospital. The wife still had the problem of the snake in the house, so she called on a neighbour who volunteered to capture the snake. He armed himself with a rolled-up newspaper and began poking under the lounge.. Soon he decided it was gone and told the woman, who sat down on the lounge in relief. But while relaxing, her hand dangled in between the cushions, where she felt the snake wriggling around She screamed and fainted, the snake rushed back under the lounge. The neighbour, seeing her lying there passed out, tried to use CPR to revive her. The neighbour's wife, who had just returned from shopping at Woolies, saw her husband's mouth on the woman's mouth and slammed her husband in the back of the head with a bag of canned goods, knocking him out and cutting his scalp to a point where it needed stitches. The noise woke the woman from her dead faint and she saw her neighbour lying on the floor with his wife bending over him, so she assumed that the snake had bitten him. She went to the kitchen and got a small bottle of whiskey, and began pouring it down the man's throat. By now, the police had arrived. They saw the unconscious man, smelled the whiskey, and assumed that a drunken fight had occurred. They were about to arrest them all, when the women tried to explain how it all happened over a little garden snake! The police called an ambulance, which took away the neighbour and his sobbing wife. Now, the little snake again crawled out from under the lounge and one of the policemen drew his gun and fired at it. He missed the snake and hit the leg of the end table. The table fell over, the lamp on it shattered and, as the bulb broke, it started a fire in the curtains. The other policeman tried to beat out the flames, and fell through the window into the yard on top of the family dog who, startled, jumped out and raced into the street, where an oncoming car swerved to avoid it and smashed into the parked police car. Meanwhile, neighbours saw the burning curtains and called in the fire brigade. The firemen had started raising the fire ladder when they were halfway down the street. The rising ladder tore out the overhead wires, put out the power, and disconnected the telephones in a tensquare city block area. (but they did get the house fire out).
