Since our founding in 1938, we have explored the power of modern design to create compelling work and residential environments that inspire and endure. Knoll represents: + A belief in modern design + 70 years of workplace experience + A comprehensive product portfolio + A commitment to customer service and manufacturing quality + A focus on environmental sustainability + A global perspective W As an architect, interior space planner and furniture designer, Florence Knoll made a commitment to design excellence that resonates clearly within our company today. work. life. world. A belief in modern design Our design philosophy combines artistic inventions with functional efficiency and a commitment to environmental sustainability. At Knoll, modern design has been our guiding principle, and our passion has been shared by customers worldwide. Our founders, Hans and Florence Knoll, embraced the creative genius at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and the Bauhaus School to create new types of furniture for the workplace. Their approach, where craftsmanship joined with technology through the use of design, anchors our perspective and shapes the values we endeavor to live by today. Our continuous attention to carefully proportioned and detailed design is shared by architects, interior designers and executives who believe that the best furniture complements interior architecture, rather than competes with it. We work with the world’s foremost architects and designers of furniture for the workplace and the home. Defining collaborators include mid-century Cranbrook masters Harry Bertoia and Eero Saarinen, Florence Knoll, Warren Platner, Frank Gehry, Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the Bauhaus legend. This design leadership defines not only the past but the future of Knoll. Upcoming collaborations include designs by Antenna Design, Don Chadwick, Formway Design, Jens & Laub and Joseph D’Urso. W Florence Knoll’s groundbreaking designs for corporate interiors continue to influence Knoll today as we preserve our heritage and history — and move forward with new ideas. Classic modern designs, right, including a Florence Knoll table desk and chairs by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Charles Pollock, complement contemporary AutoStrada™ wall-based furniture. 2 | Knoll work. life. world. | 3 Florence Knoll designed lounge furniture and a credenza as “fill in pieces” to complement “stars” like Eero Saarinen’s pedestal table and chair series. 4 | Knoll urge for good design is “ The the same as the urge to go on living. The assumption is that somewhere, hidden, is a better way of doing things. Harry Bertoia ” Our classic furniture, including pieces by Harry Bertoia, Florence Knoll, Warren Platner, Eero Saarinen, Jens Risom and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, is exhibited in major art museums, with more than 40 pieces in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art. work. life. world. | 5 Making a difference: Modernism at Risk Less than a century after their construction, Modernist masterpieces — critical documents in the history of architecture — are being routinely demolished, disfigured or abandoned. As part of our effort to contribute to the communities where we do business, we are the founding sponsor of the World Monuments Fund (WMF) Modernism at Risk program. WMF is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the world’s architectural heritage. Modernism at Risk includes programs dedicated to preservation and public advocacy, with the intention of attracting international resources regarding the dangers faced by Modernist buildings across the globe. A cornerstone of Modernism at Risk is the World Monuments Fund/Knoll Modernism Prize, which will be awarded biennially to a designer or design firm whose work enhances the public’s awareness of the seminal role that Modernism plays in the built environment. Harry Bertoia’s Diamond chairs, shown here at the Modernist landmark A. Conger Goodyear House by Edward Durell Stone, reflect the Cranbrook-trained sculptor’s interest in space and form. 6 | Knoll Modernist maverick Ludwig Mies van der Rohe had a profound effect on the work of Florence Knoll, who manufactured his classic Barcelona® Collection to his exacting specifications. Architect Phillip Johnson popularized the furniture at the mid-century Glass House, his New Canaan, Connecticut, residence. |7 8 | Knoll work. life. world. 70 Years of workplace experience Florence Knoll developed the idea of the modern office and pioneered the interior design profession. Through research and experience worldwide, we set standards in solving practical workplace needs. From private office furniture for individuals to the evolving spectrum of open plan furniture that supports an ultra-linked, connected workforce, we offer a definitive resource to address the dynamic activities of the contemporary office. S In 1943, Florence Knoll established the Knoll Planning Unit to create totally designed interiors, from the initial plan to the final selection and placement of furniture and accessories. A customized AutoStrada™ office, complemented by chairs by Don Chadwick, left, provides signature structure for the open plan workplace. Today, we are inspiring a new generation with a dedication to the most innovative and dynamic designs for corporations, healthcare organizations, educational institutions and governmental agencies. Whether the goal is to encourage teamwork, set ergonomic guidelines, plan for new technologies or reinvent the office, we work closely with customers to solve workplace issues and accommodate the diversity of its users. Insights like these drive every element of our product design: + The workplace is evolving from a single destination to a holistic resource. Work is no longer tied to a single physical space. + The individual desk is being utilized less. Communal, collaborative spaces are becoming the core of organizational activities. + Organizations are becoming more attuned to creating dynamic spaces that have access to daylight. + Workforce mobility is influencing how real estate assets are deployed. A recent Knoll study revealed how the contemporary office is transforming. We set an international standard for X high-performance, eco-sensitive seating with the Life® chair by Formway Design, shown with Richard Sapper’s classic executive conference chair. work. life. world. | 9 Knoll understands the “ important difference between hearing and listening. Propeller meeting and training tables, top and above, paired with chairs by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Don Chadwick, respectively, create dynamic shared collaborative spaces. 10 | Knoll AutoStrada™ is architecture for the workplace. Integrating high-performance capabilities with modern detail, AutoStrada™ responds to evolving needs with a perfectly calibrated office environment. work. life. world. | 11 Jeffrey Bernett and Nicholas Dodziuk’s Dividends Horizon,® shown here with their EWC Tech™ and EWC Sport™ chairs, offers a range of planning opportunities for both individual and shared workspace, emphasizing material lightness and visual transparency. 12 | Knoll Defining the Mobile Worker A recent Knoll study, titled “The Voice of Mobile Workers,” surveyed more than 500 respondents in an effort to understand how organizations can successfully provide for an increasingly mobile workforce. The study found that mobile workers, who are typically leaders within their organizations, come into the office most often for meetings and to access in-house services. As a result, the study suggests that workspaces: + Balance both individual task-focused and collaborative work areas. + Allow for mobility of work and mobility of the workspace with technology, equipment and support tools. + Enable mobile workers to work where and when they like, at any hour or day of the year. + Have “plug and play” capability for a variety of technologies. In short, a healthy balance of unassigned workstations, which can be a successful strategy for reducing real estate costs and collaborative space, will ultimately provide an organization with the most satisfied and productive mobile workforce. Balancing individual, task-focused and collaborative areas can optimize the work environment. work. life. world. | 13 work. life. world. Our attention to detail and the quality of our work have resulted in an extensive portfolio of wood products that is unmatched in design value. Today, we manufacture flat-panel wood components — including office system panels, worksurfaces, drawer-fronts and doors — that are veneered and finished prior to their assembly. This systematic, component-based approach to wood production enables us to manufacture a wider range of more flexible products for creating total office environments. We are proud of our documented history of environmentally responsible practices. Our wood office systems and furniture products are manufactured using wood from responsibly managed forests, and we are recognized as a leader in clean manufacturing technology. Our manufacturing facilities are rich in people who are skilled in the production and craft of wood furniture. 18 | Knoll In 2007, we introduced a comprehensive wood policy to ensure that illegally harvested wood is not used in our products; our manufacturing facilities are Chain of Custody certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC™). work. life. world. | 19 20 | Knoll work. life. world.
