No Service Charge Get a free quote over the phone or at your home. We are Local Dog-friendly hotels — not so much. I knew it was only a matter of time before our aging air conditioning units called it quits. With rather large dogs, I also knew a hotel was not an option if our units died in the middle of the peak season. My wife and I decided to look into replacement before the inevitable occurred. We had five quotes from both local and larger valley contractors. Travis with ProSkill impressed us with his promptness, knowledge, and thoroughness. Travis was the only contractor to do a calculation on our house, then come back and present a proposal in person. I knew I had my guy! Their pricing was beyond fair for top quality units, especially when considering all the extra work they did beyond just “changing out the boxes”, as Travis says. The final install was a work of art, and the team cleaned up with care. I will gladly continue to refer Travis and the ProSkill team to all my neighbors and friends. - Charles H., Magic and Zoe, Anthem Resident We live in Anthem. Superb Marketing Designed to Get the Highest Possible Price A D V E R T I S E M E N T ASK DOREEN When to Consider Contingency Dear Doreen, I have been trying to sell my home for eight months. When I finally got an offer, it was contingent on the sale of the buyer’s home. It would’ve meant taking my house off the market and hoping their house actually sold. I rejected it! Now, it’s happened again! I got another offer with a contingency. Is this some kind of virus everyone is catching? Really… What to do? Looking for Clean Sale Dear LFCS, I don’t have your address so can’t be too specific, but I am guessing your home is in the higher-price range where properties aren’t moving quickly. If so, a contingency offer might make sense given the low number of buyers and the high number of days on the market. But, before you accept, ask: Is the buyer’s property priced right? Get photos and a description and ask a knowledgeable agent in that market for help. Another strategy is to accept with a clause requiring the buyer to reduce the price of their home after 45 days. If you do accept, make sure the buyer’s agent uses the “Buyer Contingency Addendum” from our association. There is protection for you in that form. Good luck! Doreen Living In Anthem & Loving It! NEWS » SCHOOL SDOHS Assigns iPads to Students By Sydney Marsing [email protected] W hile some schools still struggle to prohibit devices in the classroom, Sandra Day O’Connor High School has joined the wave of schools that see the educational and financial potential of employing handheld devices in the classroom. As an expansion of the “Tech Rich” program piloted last school year at SDOHS [See “Students, Take Out Your Smartphones,” In&Out, Jan. 23], every SDOHS student will be issued a school-owned iPad this fall, along with their textbooks. Students will be trained on the safe and responsible use of the device which will be used regularly throughout the year to hone 21st century skills. “We saw more engagement in the [pilot] classrooms,”said Associate Superintendent Gayle Galligan. “Students… participated in more collaboration, learned self-management strategies, and, of course, used less paper.” Galligan said full implementation of the program can help the district save money by using lower-cost digital resources and e-textbooks. The district intends to gradually expand iPad integration and campuswide wi-fi into other high schools followed by middle schools. io Pick Up Your iPad A parent or guardian must sign an Equipment Checkout Form in order for their children to pick up their iPad at orientation beginning Tuesday, July 29. Meet the Teacher Night 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 19 Staff will present an overview of the program and discuss students’ responsibilities and how parents can ensure students get the most from this educational opportunity. And more schools are embracing the potential rather than trying to battle the beast. Here’s how to make it more than a social device, with apps to help study, stay organized, keep in touch with family… and keep the peace. IN&OUT PHOTO ILLUSTRATION Life360 (Life360) No more missed check-ins leaving parents to fear the worst. This family locator by Life360 uses GPS to allow people in your circle to stay connected. CURRENTS » SCHOOL The Homework App (Eco Designs, LTD) The dog-eared planner is a thing of the past. The Homework App is a graphically pleasing, intuitive method of keeping track of assignments. Subtasks help break it up into manageable bits, reminders keep you on time, and the dashboard gives a windows-like graphic overview of what’s coming due. Email or Facebook assignments to friends, keep track of teachers’ office hours and even get help with homework. Free; Pro-version $0.99. My Grades & Homework (Roxanne Brittain) Get serious about getting the grade. View assignments on calendar by date or in list form by course. Mark status of assignments as “not done,” “completed” or “graded.” Keep tabs on course grades based on scores received and calculate GPA. Customizable to teachers’ grading methods (e.g., standard points-based, weighted). Automatically backs up to Dropbox weekly. $0.99. Notability (Ginger Labs) Take a picture of a teacher’s blackboard or handout, write and draw notes directly on the images while recording the lecture. You can find a specific point in the audio recording based on your position in the notes, organize the files via text recognition, and share it all with your study group via email, iCloud or Google Drive. $4.99. Evernote (Evernote) Even if devices are prohibited in the classroom, Evernote can help students stay organized. This powerful app lets you take photos (of paper notes, study guides, old assignments), and mark them up, organize and share them. Notes are accessible from almost any device. Free; Premium version $4.99/month. Graphing Calculator (Appcylon, LLC) It hurts when the materials list includes a $125-graphing calculator. By Karen Goveia [email protected] T “When you look at our state data, students are getting their special needs met, but we need to close the gap and shoot for better student achievement,” Remus said. he Deer Valley Unified School District is revamping its special education program, hiring 27 additional special education teachers for Remus told In&Out in order to add the 2014–2015 school year. more special education teachers, the district had to cut the number of paras At the advice of an independent and thin out the student support services consulting firm, the district redefined department at the district office. the role of the special education paraprofessionals to assisting students with daily activities such as transitioning from one class to another. The instructional component, previously handled in part by paras, will be shifted to qualified teachers. The move comes after a special education task force found paraprofessionals were spending too much time on curriculum instruction—a task that just fell on their shoulders. “It never really was in their job description… [special ed] teachers are hard to find,” said Michael Remus, director of student support services. The task force—a group of parents, teachers, administrators and at least one paraprofessional—formed two years ago to study the gap between the general education population and those with special needs. The good news, Remus said with regard to the 68 paraprofessionals who lost jobs, is that many were able to be reassigned to DVUSD’s new Vista Peak School, which offers an alternative program for students with academic, behavioral and social/emotional needs. Remus hopes the restructuring will help the district meet the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards for all students. Each special education teacher will now have a focus subject area to ensure the curriculum needs of students are satisfied. “My goal has always been that students get a really good education and their needs met. I’m pleased with the results. I just want to see more growth.” The district plans to recruit an additional 28 special education teachers for the 2015-2016 school year. io Special Education Teacher vs. Paraprofessional The state of Arizona requires specific certification for special education teachers: A bachelor’s degree or better with a specific focus or additional coursework in special education. Paraprofessionals are generally only required to have a high school diploma (or GED) and one to three months of training or experience.
