The audience included clients of the bank, other trading houses (CBH, Duferco, Vitol, Bominflot, Agrenco) and shipping executives. It was a unique opportunity to present how the Aegean model of a fully integrated supply chain has established itself into the marine fuels segment of the shipping industry. DNV Tanker Update Features Aegean Marine Petroleum The November issue of DNV Tanker Update included a full overview of Aegean Marine Petroleum Inc., profiling the company since it has been listed on the NYSE more than one year ago. The article stressed the expansion of Aegean and noted that it now owns a marine fuel terminal in Portland, UK. Furthermore, it noted the company is becoming a dominant player in the industry and boasts one of the largest, most modern fleets in the world. Commenting on the new ships in the fleet, Kostas Polidakis, Aegean’s Technical Manager, was quoted as saying the vessels are being fitted with twin reputation for providing quality fuel and efficient delivery screw pumps and are able to more efficiently pump high and that the volume of marine fuel sold in the first nine viscosity fuels. The article concluded by noting Aegean’s months of 2007 was 40% higher than the previous year. The Aegean Soccer Cup Final took place January 22 between Pontoporiakos and Kategida, and the winner was Pontoporiakos!!. Yesterday, Sunday, I went to a huge hotel, the Intercontinental, for the Party of Aegean. There I met Santa Claus and his elves and we also took pictures with him. We also played with the clowns, we sang, and danced. Then a magician arrived and he showed us many difficult tricks. Then we ate because we had to be strong for Karaoke. After the Karaoke we got many presents. My present was a very big red car with remote control. I want to thank Aegean for this nice gift and I am waiting impatiently for next year’s party. Happy New Year Filippidis Nikolaos Ten Years Old My smile must have been huge when I heard my dad saying that on Sunday, January 16, we would go to the party Aegean was organizing for us, the children of Aegean. I went nuts and I could not wait for this Sunday to arrive, the Sunday when the hall where the party would take place would be filled with happy voices and laughter. The day finally arrived and we started from our house full of joy. As we approached the Intercontinental Hotel, where the party would take place, my anxiety was growing as I could not wait to find out what present Aegean’s Santa Claus would bring me this year…but, as if someone was trying to make my agony grow, we had to drive around for quite some time before we found a place to park our car. But it was worth it!! As we entered the decorated hall I met all the other children who were also waiting for the moment when Santa would give us our presents. I had met with all most of these children at last year’s party…they had grown enough. We were very happy. But what we enjoyed the most were the games with the clowns, the singing and dancing. I was really happy to see my dad have a friendly chat with his colleagues, but I was even happier thinking of the present I would soon get. The big moment arrived. The moment that would make the children’s faces shine had come. I was really enthused by my gift. It was a fantastic Karaoke, with modern music and lovely songs. Unfortunately the time came for us to leave, after of course we had enjoyed all sorts of delicacies at a beautifully decorated buffet. I returned home impatient to show my girl friends the magnificent present I had received. I cannot wait for next year’s party...!! Chrysoula Kapsokavadi Eleven Years Old WINTER 2007-2008 AEGEAN NEWS Flows & Currents On Archbishop Christodoulos Passing On January 28, 2008, the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Christodoulos passed away. The funeral service took place at the Metropolitan Church of Athens and was followed by an official funeral procession, where thousands of people accompanied the Archbishop’s body to his final resting place at Athens’ First Cemetery. Aegean expresses its deep sorrow on the passing of this beacon of high spiritual integrity, who brought a renewed spirit and enthusiasm in reaching out to the people of Greece to spread the teachings of Orthodoxy. Through his leadership the Church made a special effort to engage youth and to apply the teachings of Orthodoxy to the contemporary issues of the day. May His Memory Be Eternal! High Penalties to Automobile Manufacturers The European Commission is threatening to impose big penalties to automobile manufacturers if they do not take action to decrease emissions by 2012. The Commission’s target is to decrease carbon dioxide emissions produced by cars, from today’s 160 grams per kilometer to 130 grams per kilometer by 2012. The Commission was committed –through its President Jose Barroso-to lead a global campaign for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. Cars are responsible for 12% of carbon dioxide emissions. “Clean” Energy in Land and Air Round the World with Biofuels In March 2008, Pit Bethune of New Zealand will attempt to travel around the world by sea with a boat made of carbon fibres, and powered exclusively with biofuels. Bethune’s goal is to show the world that “biofuels can be used effectively for our transport.” Greek Merchant Marine Minister on Shipping Policy Addressing the American-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce Economy conference in December, the Merchant Marine Minister George Voulgarakis unveiled the ministry’s four main policy goals, aimed at ensuring the leading role played by Greek-owned shipping in international commerce and supporting competitiveness in the Greek shipping sector. The minister stated that this policy aimed boosting the shipping industry’s performance, introducing new innovative measures and actions to promote the country’s shipping product and services, integrating shipping and island policies, and promoting a social dialogue aimed to achieve consensus and cooperation. Mr. Voulgarakis pointed out that the Greek shipping industry was constantly challenging the international shipping industry through its contribution to international trade, its know-how and size, its ability to attract investors, businesspeople, and workers and to promote new initiatives on the environment, technology, and research. ◗ Solar energy was used on the light aircraft which, in September 2007, broke the world’s record of the longest flight without a pilot. It flew at an altitude of 50,000 feet for 54 hours. ◗ Bioethanol fuel will be used on the truck the British Andy Pank will use for a mission he is planning from Tibuktu in Mali. ◗ A car using pressurized natural gas completed a 45,000 kilometer journey in April 2007 with its driver the German Reiner Zitlow. 10 AEGEAN NEWS WINTER 2007-2008 Committee for Greener Transport Transport Minister Kostis Hatzidakis announced the creation of a new permanent committee staffed by specialist scientists that will be responsible for suggesting and promoting policies for greener, cleaner transport using new environment-friendly technologies in Greece. Among issues to be dealt with by the new committee he listed natural gas, hydrogen, bio-fuels and hybrid technologies, the use and extension of cycle paths and other ways to reduce air pollution. Alexandros Vrachnos, president of Tram SA, will assume the post of chairman of the "Green Transport Committee." “Green” Automobile Plant Volvo, the Swedish automobile manufacturer, built the first car manufacturing plant globally, with zero carbon dioxide emissions. The plant is operating fully since the beginning of December and with a 100% “clean” energy. Volvo and Electrabel, the energy company of the international industrial group Suez, invested more than 10 million Euros in the Volvo truck assembly plant. Near the plant Suez built a mini energy producing station with a biomass boiler which burns wood waste to produce hot water which then feeds the plant’s heating circuit. Within the plant’s perimeter there are three 140-meter wind generators, which produce two megawatts each and cover half of the plant’s electricity needs. The other half is covered by Suez’s energy producing hydroelectric stations in France. The plant’s energy range is supplemented by 150 solar collectors on its roof, and there is also a boiler operating with vegetable oils to cover demand peaks. In combination with the measures taken for insulating the plant, all these initiatives allowed Volvo to bring carbon dioxide emissions down to zero by the end of 2007, against 14,000 tons which it emitted in 2004. International Exercise in Elefsina An international exercise involving Greek authorities and the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) on tackling marine pollution was held in Elefsina Bay on Thursday, in the presence of Marine and Island Policy Minister George Voulgarakis and the head of the Greek coast guard Vice Admiral Ilias Sionidis. The five-stage exercise was described as a success, with all the participant services showing a high degree of readiness and training in combating every possible form of pollution in Greek seas. The exercise was based on a scenario of a massive oil spill caused by the impact of a tanker on the docks and its subsequent collision with a freighter that also spilled fuel into the sea. It involved the deployment of coast guard pollution clearing craft and the ultramodern oil pollution response vessel "Santa Maria" chartered by EMSA, as well as local authority services. In statements afterward, Mr. Voulgarakis stressed that protection of the marine environment was a priority for his ministry: "We attribute great importance to prevention and, of course, to response. A proof of this was today's exercise in cooperation with EMSA." He also highlighted the fact that EMSA had chosen to carry out the exercise in Greece and that it believed that ministry's services had the required know-how and experience to handle incidents of marine pollution. Global Lead for Greek Shipowners Greek shipowners invested about $12.4 billion in the first seven months of 2007 to acquire 353 secondhand ships. Of these, 222 were cargo ships, worth $8.5 billion, 84 were tankers worth 3.11 billion, 25 were container ships worth $649.5 million, and 22 were reefers worth $135 million. The total amount invested in 1,147 secondhands ships worldwide in this period was $292 billion, and the combined Greek total was the largest of all. Greece was followed by Norway, Korea, Germany, China, India and the USA. Greeks also hold first position in second hand dry-bulk ship orders, with 31%, followed by the Chinese with 6%, and the Koreans and Norwegians with 5%. Greeks accounted for 24% of orders for tankers and 22% for container ships. According to Union of Greek Shipowners data, Greek-owned shipping in 2006 grew by 3.6% in dwt and reduced the average age of vessels from 15.3 to 14.3 years. Greek owned ships represent 48.2% of total European Union capacity. WINTER 2007-2008 AEGEAN NEWS 11 N Y SE AEGEAN One Year on Wall Street Just over one year has passed since December 6, 2006, when Aegean Marine Petroleum was listed on the New York Stock Exhange (NYSE) in its Initial Public Offering and raised more than 201.5 million dollars. One Year Ago The Initial Public Offering saw the company trade at U.S. $14 per share, and during the initial day of trading the company’s stock price reached 12 AEGEAN NEWS WINTER 2007-2008 $16.50. During the week following the Initial Public Offering, to cover over– allotments, Aegean Marine Petroleum issued an additional 1,875,000 shares of its common stock. One Year Later One year has gone by and the assessment of the performance of the first commercial private Greek company on the world’s biggest Stocκ In twelve months the shares of Aegean Marine Petroleum tripled in value and the company is registering a course that would be envied by many companies established for years in international markets. Exchange can be characterised more than satisfactory, since the company’s share in these twelve months tripled its value and is registering a course that would be envied by many companies established for years in the international investing circles. During the 12 month period, Aegean’s share had very satisfactory average daily trading and its price registered a remarkable upard course, resulting in the company’s market value reaching two billion dollars. On November 15, 2007, Dimitris Melissanidis, Aegean’s founder, announced that he would sell 7,500,000 shares from his personal portfolio. Despite the extremely negative climate for the international money markets, due to the the finance crisis which is shaking the United States, the common stock shares offered by Dimitris Melissanidis raised the interest of strong international institutional investors and was sold for approximately $38 per share, thus showing strong resistance to the dropping trends registered in the international markets. Dimitris Melissanidis, with this move, drew almost $300 million. Meanwhile, the company is continuing its upward course. Following the acquisition of the Belgian Bunkers at Sea and the British Portland Bunkers, both of which are active in the field of international marine fuels, Aegean’s newly built double hull tankers are being delivered on a regular basis and are being immediately deployed in the company’s bunkering stations network. which has literally expanded to the Seven Seas. Furthermore, the company has plans in progress to buy out or establish additional stations in many other international shipping locations. A new activity for Aegean is the trading of its own Alfa Marine Lubricants, an activity already taking place from the Ports of Piraeus and Singapore, and is expected to expand to 20 other major Ports throughout the world. Aegean’s success on the New York Stock Exchange was officially celebrated recently (November 6) in the presence of Aegean Marine Petroleum’s founder Mr. Dimitris Melissanidis, its President Mr. Peter Georgiopoulos, members of the Board, NYSE President Mr. John A. Thain and high ranking officials from banking institutions. Dimitris Melissanidis was invited to ring the Bell on the NYSE trading floor. The Bell is part of NYSE’s heritage and it is considered an honor to be invited to ring it. WINTER 2007-2008 AEGEAN NEWS 13 Stations of the Month Zorbala Athina—Two Gas Stations Poseidonos Ave. & Riga Fereou, Kalamaki 15 Alipedou Street, Piraeus Although our conversation with Ms. Zorbala has nothing impressively original and is almost identical with talks we have had with other Aegean associates, it is the best evidence of the exceptional relationship Aegean has established with its gas station owners and the consistency with which it pursues it. M s. Athina Zorbala started her involvement with the fuel sector in 2003. She did not have any previous experience, but she has by her side a man with great experience in this business, her husband. Her entrance into the profession took place with the gas station in Poseidonos Avenue. The relationship with Aegean started at the same time. How did you come to this decision, to make a start in this business cooperating with a relatively new company? We wanted to make a good start. The spark was a friendly acquaintance with Mr. Iakovos Melissanidis. Besides that, we assed around and got the information we needed. All the information was more than positive. And we took the decision. Our gas station in Kalamaki opened up right from the start as an Aegean station. What was it like in the beginning? The reaction of the customers? It is true that in the beginning customers asked many questions, How come we sold cheaper, was the quality of fuel lower and questions of that nature. We gave all the proper explanations, but finally what proved to be the best testimony of what our establishment was about was the product we offered with consistency. Competitive prices and quality fuel in a highly attractive 14 AEGEAN NEWS WINTER 2007-2008 "The best testimony for our establishment was what we offered with consistency. Competitive prices and quality fuel in a highly attractive environment." environment. And this is how we built up our steady customers who no longer need any explanations. But even occasional customers do not ask any questions now. Aegean has become a strong name in the market. When did you open up the gas station in Piraeus? We have been operating the station in Piraeus since 2004. Aegean had rented it and Iakovos himself suggested that we undertake this operation as well. We thought it was a good idea and after the thorough renovation of the premises, we started. How do you really feel about the way things are going so far? Any problems? Of course we face problems. It is part of every job. What is important however, is that whatever the problem that comes up it is dealt with and solved right away. Our relationship with the people of Aegean is friendly and whatever we had agreed in the beginning has come through. We are really satisfied with this cooperation!! “If You Want to Know Who You Are Talking To” Stefanos Papandoniou-Limenaria-Thasos Mr. Papandoniou, a warm person, full of energy and gushing speech, does not need any coercion to “say it all.” And it is obvious that he likes what he is doing. B esides working in the gas station, Stefanos Papandoniou repairs big trailers, is involved in quarries, and is considering soya cultivation. A restless, active spirit, a person who tries to develop in every way, he is the right person to represent Aegean. Mr. Papandoniou’s gas station is the only Aegean station in the island of Thasos. He started in the fuel business recently, just four years ago. His former business involvement was “an auto repair shop, where I worked together with my brother. Four years ago I decided to make a change. I bough a big plot of land, 2000 square meters, by the sea, to set up a gas station.” The classic question: How did the cooperation with Aegean come about? I had already come to an oral agreement with one of the big names in the sector. And one day I happened to have a talk with Mr. Simopoulos, a man with great experience and good knowledge of this market. He insisted that the right choice would be Aegean. What really impressed me was his phrase “If you really want to know who manage the company you work with and be able to talk to them.” As a matter of fact, right on the spot, he called on the phone Iakovos Melissanidis and told him about the spot I had bought and my plans. Iakovos was interested and the decision was made right away. Weren’t you afraid to decide so fast on something so serious? Not at all. I am a self-made person, "If you want to know who are the managers in the company you work with and talk to them, Aegean is the only choice" with a huge work experience and an even greater experience in ‘reading’ people. I have worked abroad, under difficult circumstances. I have worked in the Arab world, I have seen a lot. I understand people. I talked to Iakovos Melissanidis on the phone. I understood everything. When there is clarity of speech, everything works out well. Did the customers express some reservations in the beginning? People here know who I am, and how I work. I had no problems whatsoever. How have things been going up to now? Are you satisfied with this cooperation? Everything is going fine. I have no complaints. Even when I have a problem, I solve it right on the spot with a simple phone call to Thessaloniki. I will give you an example. My gas station is only 20 meters from the coast. As a result the overheads had started to get rusty. So I asked Aegean if it would be possible to have them replaced. It was possible. And the overheads were replaced immediately. Now, this does not happen like that anywhere else. Well, Mr. Papandoniou, we wish you to remain as enthusiastic and active as you are today, and your business activities to become even more successful. Would you like to add something? Of course! After the M/T MILOS, which was delivered to Aegean in June of 2007, the physical supplier of marine fuel has taken delivery of another three product bunkering tankers. Motor tankers SERIFOS, KITHNOS, and AMORGOS are already part of Aegean’s fleet in its various service centers. M /T SERIFOS, registered under the Singaporean flag, was delivered to Aegean Bunkering Services in the middle of last November and sailed for Singapore where she has joined M/T MILOS and the other bunkering tankers, supporting Aegean’s plans to strengthen its presence in the strategic port of Singapore. M/T KITHNOS was delivered to Aegean only few days later, on 30th November 2007. For the delivery of KITHNOS the Provincial Government of Fujian and the Head of Fujian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation had invited the founder and Head of Corporate Development of Aegean Mr Dimitris Melissanidis to attend the delivery ceremony. Mr. Melissanidis traveled to China to personally attend the delivery of MT Kithnos and met with the Vive Governor of Fujian province Mr. Li Chuan. Both parties expressed their satisfaction regarding the on-going and successful cooperation between Aegean and the Chinese builder. As the total order with Fujian South East Shipyard in China comprises 15 product tankers, all parties promised to further strengthen this long-term relationship and expand the Sino-Hellenic cooperation. The vessel was delivered in a commemorative ceremony organized and hosted by Fujian Southeast shipyard in the presence of distinguished guests from the local government of Fujian Province, senior executives from the Communications Bank of China, the President and directors from Fujian Shipbuilding Group and Southeast Shipbuilding and of course the top executives from Aegean, who Fujian Southeast Shipyard From the delivery ceremony of M/T KITHNOS WINTER 2007-2008 AEGEAN NEWS 17 Ναυτιλια Fujian Southeast Shipyard All the tankers to be built by the Korean builder fulfill all the latest requirements and regulations for safe ocean going navigation, and will be equipped with the most modern and cutting edge technology equipment for the bunkering trade and operations. traveled from Greece for this event. Just before the end of 2007, the Chinese builder delivered the fourth vessel to Aegean. With the delivery of AMORGOS, a 4,600 dwt newly built double-hull bunkering tanker from Fujian Southeast Shipyard in China, Aegean is continuously strengthening and expanding its marine fuel logistics infrastructure; The AMORGOS is expected to operate out of the company's service center located in Gibraltar. Fujian Southeast Shipyard is also getting ready to deliver the fifth vessel M/T KIMOLOS that is undergoing its sea-trials. The vessel is to be delivered to Aegean within February after completing the final ‘tuning’ and commissioning tests. M/T KIMOLOS will be the third of Aegean’s new buildings that will fly the Singapore flag and she will sail from China for Singapore, where she will be join the rest of the fleet of bunkering tankers that Aegean is operating in the area. 18 AEGEAN NEWS WINTER 2007-2008 Hyundai Shipyard Alongside the builder’s quay, the sixth vessel M/T SYROS was launched early in 2008 and is now in outfitting stage for its completion. The seventh and eighth vessels are following closely and are in the assembly stage on the builder’s slipways. To the north, at Qingdao, Qingdao Hyundai Shipyard is rapidly advancing with the construction of the sixteen 6200dwt product tankers. The first vessel, M/T PATMOS, was successfully launched early in 2008, and is only few weeks to delivery. The second vessel is currently in the erection stage and the South Korean builder is constantly laying blocks on the slipway that are then assembled to complete the hull form of the vessel and she’s expected to be launched in a few weeks. Furthermore, the builder is manufacturing blocks for the third and fourth vessels and soon they will be Severnav Shipyard Hyundai Shipyard placed on the slipway for assembly. The Koreans have also inaugurated the construction of the fifth and sixth vessels. ‘Steel-cutting’ was also done within December 2007 and January 2008 and a number of blocks are currently manufactured; the production line is progressing at a fast pace. The sixteen tankers that will be built by the Korean builder have the same “philosophy” as their 4600dwt “smaller sisters’” built in Fujian Southeast. Designed by Koreans, they fulfill all the latest requirements and regulations for safe oceangoing navigation. At the same time they will be equipped with the most modern and cutting edge technology equipment for the bunkering trade and operations. In line with its commitment, Aegean’s total orderbook of 37 vessels is now materializing its promise for growth and fleet renewal as the newbuildings start their trading. It is worth mentioning that 31 of the new build vessels are dedicated bunkering tankers, placing Aegean as the single physical supplier of marine fuel and lubricants globally with such an extensive orderbook and soon with such an extensive fleet. Providing bunkering services in several locations around the globe, this order serves Aegean’s long-term strategic target of increasing its market share in the bunkering sector by combining an expansion of activity in current bunkering stations and also in new locations through its tonnage supplement advantage after the implementation of new regulations for bunkering tankers. On the European front of Aegean’s new building program, M/T MAISTROS, the first of the RORO tankers ordered by Aegean from Severnav Shipyard, is now being prepared for delivery, and will soon sail on its maiden voyage on the Danube. The intention is to sail to the Black Sea for sea trials, after the successful completion of which, together with the final commissioning test, the vessel will be delivered to Aegean. The second vessel is following closely behind. The most modern and hi-tech equipment for navigation, safety, and operation of the vessels are installed on board, while the loading and discharging equipment inside the garage is a complete simulation of a petrol station—Aegean’s Mobile Petrol Stations—that will revolutionize the fuel supply to Greek islands. Simultaneously, with Aegean’s expanding fuel station network in Greece, these vessels will allow Aegean to expand its presence in the Greek islands. With the RORO tankers Aegean will secure the supply of the Greek islands with efficient and inexpensive transport of high quality fuel With these RORO tankers that will load fuel from Aegean’s brand new fuel terminal in Aspropyrgos, Aegean will provide islanders with inexpensive fuel of top quality. This is a new approach to fuel trade and transport. Based on a pioneering design, the tanker realizes Aegean’s vision to create new standards of delivering fuel to gas stations, hence offering competitive prices and better service to the final consumer. Aegean’s ALFA marine lubricants are blended from internationally selected base oils and manufactured in the state-of-the-art blending plant. ALFA marine lubricants 20 AEGEAN NEWS WINTER 2007-2008 series consist of top quality and performance mineral, synthetic lubes and greases, which meet the requirements and specifications of the major Original Engine Manufacturers. Aegean marine lubricants are available 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, through a reliable and effective logistics network, offering the full scale of products. Through the vast experience of supplying vessels worldwide and with in-depth knowledge of the marine market, Aegean is able to offer to its customers excellent service, Cooperation with ΑP Oil both commercial and technical. Aegean’ s major strategic competitive advantage is the combination of both production and commercial know-how, which distinguishes its ALFA marine lubricants series from other competitor brands. In the international shipping market there hasn’t been, until now, any independent petroleum company that is an international bunker supplier and at the same time a global producer-supplier of marine lubricants. The marine lubricants market is traditionally dominated by multinational companies, but Aegean has the technical know-how, the resources, the solid foundation and also the dynamic management to become a leader in the demanding environment of the global marine lubricants market. Through its existing global network of offices and facilities for bunker supplies, Aegean, apart from the Greek market, also developed and continues to develop a network of marine lube blenders/partner independent companies, in all the major ports worldwide. In these ports Aegean is in a position to control the production procedures, the top product quality, the fast and efficient logistics, and the full availability of products. In addition, Aegean can provide competitive prices to its customers. Aegean’s commitment is to continuous improvement and progress, by providing services and products of excellent quality, thus always being the ship owner’s complete and safe choice. The strategic cooperation between Aegean Marine Petroleum Network Inc. and AP Oil International Ltd., listed on Singapore’s Stock Exchange, was completed with success. This strategic cooperation, signed September 19, 2007, concerns the production and distribution of Aegean’s marine lubricants, under the commercial name ALFA Marine Lubricants, in the most important ports of the globe. Aegean has a good knowledge of the Singapore market, as it has a long presence there as a natural supplier of marine fuels, with offices, experienced personnel, and privately-owned newly built bunkering tankers. Aegean’s choice of ΑP Oil was the result of a thorough evaluation of all Singapore’s marine lubricants production companies, the main guiding rule being strong production capacity, the ability to ensure product quality, and effective distribution. The prestige, experience, and the history of AP Oil in the production of marine lubricants was equally important. Aegean is now in a position to supply its customers with the full series of marine lubricants, in bulk or in drums, in Singapore’s anchorage (IPL), as well as outside (OPL in bulk and/or drums). The products are also available in Malaysia. Soon, Aegean’s marine lubricants will be available in most of the ports in China. WINTER 2007-2008 AEGEAN NEWS 21 Lu b r i ca n t s Aegean Peak Technology in Retail Market Lubricants In 2000, Aegean Oil’s entry into the Greek fuel products retail sales market signaled the beginning of a new era in fuel trading, offering the Greek consumer high quality fuels, developing and establishing a relationship of trust among the company, the gas station owner, and the consumer. I n the last three months of 2007, a new landmark was registered for Aegean’s activities, the entry of the company into the lubricants sector. This move gave flesh and bones to one of the most optimistic and hopeful plans of the company, the establishment of Aegean’s brand in the Retail Market and Marine Lubricants and its identification with Quality and Immediate Service to consumers. Aegean lubricants were manufactured to meet the latest strictest speci- 22 AEGEAN NEWS WINTER 2007-2008 fications of engines and machinery manufacturers and are on a par with lubricants of the highest qualitative characteristics of multinational companies. The advantages of Aegean lubricants are many and differ depending on their applications. The main development axes of the new range of products include: w Commitment to Quality w Full coverage of market needs w Peak technology w Reasonable cost The abovementioned four items formed the basis for the development of new lubricants which utilize the capabilities of contemporary technology in the sector, in automotive lubricants as well as industrial and marine lubricants. With its entry into the lubricants sector, Aegean becomes something more than a quality products and energy services trading company, it is being transformed into a company with products of innovative technology, where the products equal its corporate image and are introduced into every sector of the relative market, such as: gas stations and therefore motorists, industrial clients, dealers, authorized service stations, construction companies, shipping companies, etc. Production Plant High product technology requires high production and quality control specifications, and sufficient resources to develop and maintain the quality and innovative nature of produced products. All this is secured during the production of Aegean lubricants due to the infrastructure of the Group’s state of the art lubricants plant in Aspropyrgos. Aegean’s industrial production unit in Aspropyrgos has been designed according to the strictest American specifications, guarantee of proper operation. The installations belong to the Aegean Group since November 2006 and maintain a ChevronTexaco and FΑΜΜ lubricants production contract. Top choices in the additives sectors, Lubrizol, Infineum, Oronite, and in the basic oils sector, ExxonMobil, were a one way street for the production of new products, securing quality as much as the latest developments in the sector’s contemporary technology. Aegean’s production plant can meet a production capacity of 40,000 ΜΤ/ year, with adequate storage areas for the maintenance of supplies of basic oils and ready to use products as well, a fact of great importance for the supply of the Domestic Market as well as for the Marine Lubricants sector. It also includes two (2) filling lines 1-5lt (one fully automatic, the other semiautomatic), another semiautomatic pails’ filling machine, and finally a double stream drums filling machine, covering production and ready to use lubricants needs. The production process of Aegean lubricants meets all contemporary specifications of Quality Management standards of multinational companies and is part of the Integrated Production Management System. Every part of ready product is certified by a series of Quality Controls, which take place in the Quality Control Lab of the installation, to ensure its best performance when used by end consumers. This is why: w We created high technology products which cover all lubrication needs, by offering a complete series of products w We provide complete and integrated services, even for the most complex of equipment. w We focus on our customers’ needs and contribute in deed to their business results, by cutting down drastically on maintenance costs. w We set up the most specialized team of mechanics for the study and provision of thorough lubrication solutions. As a result, we are in a position to become the closest and exclusive associate in the sectors of automobiles, transport, industry and shipping. Furthermore, with the introduction of Aegean lubricants in the gas station network, it becomes possible for the company and its associates to offer consumers, in addition to quality and inexpensive fuels, a complete series of quality products. Every customer is special to us, and we focus on his needs by offering a series of products and services which provide solutions for the unobstructed operation of his equipment (vehicle fleet, industrial/mechanical equipment), to increase business performance and cut down on operational cost… states Mr. Theodoros Habipis, Aegean’s Lubricants Commercial Manager. “It is indicative that since lubricants consumption trend is negative, registering an 11% consumption reduction during the last five years, one should not expect the introduction of a new brand in the market. However, the introduction of Aegean lubricants comes to meet a large part of the demand for lubricants by consumers seeking quality products, equal to the products of multinational companies, in competitive prices. It is not a matter of chance that today an ever increasing number of fuel consumers trust Aegean, due to the fact that it performs within the boundaries of this philosophy. It is with this philosophy we come today to cover consumers’ needs in lubricants. We consider it a sure success…” states Mr. Kyriakos Bountzikas, Aegean’s Lubricant Sales Manager. The 70,000 metric tonne (mt) capacity double-hulled tanker FOS will be anchored off Tema, Ghana. The company's bunkering operations will be carried out on a 24-hour basis, with two delivery vessels. One vessel is the Aegean Tulip, a 1993-built 4,853 dwt double-hull bunkering tanker recently deployed from Gibraltar to West Africa. The Aegean Tulip has a cargo capacity of 3,200 mt for fuel oil and 700 mt gas oil, and a pumping rate of 500 mt per hour (mt/h). The company will also deploy Aegean VII, a vessel with 3,300 mt fuel oil and 500 mt gas oil cargo capacity and a pumping rate of 300 mt/h. Aegean, in its new supply station, will offer all grades of marine fuel oil and gas oil meeting ISO8217: 2005 specifications. The offshore location of the M/T FOS is conveniently located along the very busy shipping lanes of West Africa and offers a very cost-effective bunkering option for vessels calling at a variety of ports, ranging from those in the Ivory Coast, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Angola and all the way to Namibia. WINTER 2007-2008 AEGEAN NEWS 27 Bu n k e r i n g Aegean Investments Acquires Portland Terminal Aegean Investments announced, at the end of October 2007, that it is expanding its global network of marine fuel service centers with the acquisition of the Portland Bunkers International (PBI) marine fuel terminal, previously operated by BP Marine. Portland Harbor serves as one of the largest man-made ports in the world, and offers ideal bunkering conditions for nearly all types of vessels. 28 AEGEAN NEWS WINTER 2007-2008 L ocated in Portland Harbor along a busy shipping route on the English Channel, PBI provides convenient access for commercial vessels to refuel with the least en-route deviation among bunkering ports in the region. During recent years Portland’s terminal has received significant investments from the Athens Stock Exchange listed DIEKAT, from which it was bought out, and BP. PBI's bunkering facility includes four in-land dedicated storage tanks and a state-of-the-art technological control room with remote operations. In addition to other products Aegean provides, the company will offer low sulphur marine fuels at this service center as it is located near the southern access of the North Sea Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA). The acquisition of Portland Terminal perfectly complements the recent acquisition of Bunkers at Sea, providing an additional regional solution for loading and depositing. With the move in West Africa and the acquisition of Bunkers at Sea, 2007 targets were not only achieved—the opening of two new service centers which will complement the five existing ones (in Singapore, Fujairah, Piraeus, Gibraltar and Jamaica)—but in reality, with the acquisition of Portland Bunkers Terminal, they were exceeded. This acquisition is part of Aegean’s greater strategy to expand in the strong UK market, home to four of the 10 largest transhipment European ports, presenting its unique vertical model for bunkering, transport, and fuel storage. Portland Bunkers International Limited (PBI) was established in December 1999 and its main objective is to construct and operate a bunkering facility at the port of Portland, England. The company has signed a long-term agreement with Portland Port Limited (PPL) to use, operate, and manage exclusively the existing underground marine fuel storage tanks and the marine lube oil facility at Portland Port. WINTER 2007-2008 AEGEAN NEWS 29 R oots Delphic Maxims Delphi, the earth’s navel according to ancient Greeks, is situated where, according to mythology, the two eagles of Zeus met when he sent them to search for the center of the world. It is an ideal location where geological transformations have created gulfs and raised steep rocks and the most famous oracle of the ancient world was located, with the Temple of Apollo at its epicenter. A great number of admonitory commands were engraved at the Temple, the most well known of which are “nothing in excess” and “know thyself.” These admonitions, austere but full of wisdom, were believed to belong to the seven wise men of antiquity: Thalis of Miletus, Pittacus of Mytilene, Solon of Athens, Bias of Priene, Cleoboulos of Rhodes, Chilon of Sparta, and Periander of Corinth. The seven dedicated these admonitions to Apollo as “Beneficial to People for their Lives.” According to Sosiades (“The Maxims of the Seven Wise Men”) the inscriptions included 147 commands, but there were also lists that included separately the admonitions of each one of the seven. The admiration of the ancient Greeks for these admonitions at Delphi was so great that the lyric poet Pindar (522 BC) considered the seven wise men “sons of the sun,” who, with their radiance, lighted and guided men on the course of virtue. In today’s difficult times, the need to revisit basic values that might guide our lives is perhaps more imperative than ever.
