Simchat Torah Honors Announced
Congratulations to our Chatan Bereshit Mark Eisemann and Chatan Torah Ron Coppaken
Mark Eisemann, a life-long congregational member, has recently served
Beth Shalom as a member of the Strategic
Planning Committee in connection with
revising and updating the Mt. Carmel
Cemetery governing documents, including
establishing endowment funds at the Jewish
Community Foundation for the benefit of
the Cemetery. He has also been a part of the team that coordinated
the sale of the Wornall campus. He is a partner with the law
firm of Lewis, Rice & Fingersh, where he is a business lawyer
specializing in commercial real estate. Mark’s family includes
Leslie, his wife of twenty-six years, and their children.
Ron Coppaken, a Kansas City native and lifetime member of CBS, has served
the synagogue on many committees: Membership, Budget and Governance, Scholarship, Generation to Generation Capital
Campaign, and as Past President of CBS and a trustee of the
Beth Shalom Foundation. He celebrated his Bar Mitzvah here,
was a member of USY and a Boy Scout, where he earned Eagle
Scout rank, Ner Tamid, and is a Warrior in the Tribe of MicO-Say. Ron has also been involved with the Hyman Brand
Hebrew Academy, Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Foundation.
Ron’s family includes Denise, his wife of thirty-nineyears, and their children, spouses and grandchildren.

"Taste" our New “Rimon” service on Second Day of Rosh HaShanah
One of the traditional fruits
we eat on Rosh HaShanah is the
pomegranate – rimon in Hebrew.
When we eat it, we express our hope
that “our merits may increase like the
seeds of the rimon.” Tradition teaches
that the seeds in the rimon number
613 – the same as the count of mitzvot (commandments).
This year, we are trying something different--a service called Rimon
(Day 2 Rosh HaShanah, 9/6) which
Hazzan Ben-Yehuda and I are going to
be leading. What will be different?
Rimon is
bite-sized: only 90
minutes long (10:30
a.m.-noon). You can
get home for an earlier
lunch or catch the end of Musaf in
White Theatre.
Rimon is tasty: Hazzan BenYehuda will be leading (and teaching)
us the most beautiful melodies of
the season so we can join together in
spiritual song.
Rimon is juicy: No formal
sermon. We’ll have some time to
dialogue about the biggest questions
of the day.
Rimon is OPEN: Casual
dress. ALL ages welcome. If you

Peltzman Classes Begin Anew
Fall is almost here and Sisterhood’s Sarah Peltzman Adult Education classes, taught by Rabbi Glickman, will take place on Thursdays,
from 10-11:15 am. Registration and
classes will begin on Thursday, October, 10th. The cost for the entire
year is $10 for Sisterhood members
and $15 for non-members. Classes
are open to all men and women in the
community.

Planned Givers Recognized

Recently,
the Planned Giving Committee
held their second
annual Recognition Brunch for planned givers, hosted by
Ron and Denise Coppaken at their home. Each planned
giver was presented with a very traditional and beautiful
tzedakah box as a small way for the congregation to say
“thank you” to each of the planned givers. Inscribed on
the tzedakah box are the words, “L’dor Vador. With gratitude from your entire Congregation Beth Shalom Family”
The recognition brunch and tzedakah gift box represents the Committee’s continued efforts to recognize our
congregants for their consideration and appreciation towards the long-term financial survival of our congregation.
The Committee is seeking other congregants who would
be interested in being an integral part of this process. We
hope you will consider an opportunity to discuss this option in your estate planning. You may do so by contacting

Ingredients:
• 2 Tbsp. instant coffee
dissolved into 3/4 cup
hot water
• 3 Tbsp. oil
• 3 eggs
• 1 cup apple sauce
• 3/4 cup brown sugar
• 3/4 cup honey
• 2 1/4 cups flour
• 3/4 tsp. baking powder
• 1/2 tsp. baking soda
• 2 tsp. cinnamon
Directions
1. Spray a 9x13 baking pan with non-stick cooking spray.
Preheat oven to 325°.
2. Dissolve coffee into the water. Set aside to cool.
3. Mix oil, eggs, applesauce, brown sugar and honey with an
electric mixer.
4. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking
soda and cinnamon.
5. Alternating, add flour mixture and coffee to the egg mixture in the bowl. Mix lightly until just smooth.
6. Bake, uncovered, for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick
or knife inserted in the middle of the cake comes out
clean.

Mental Illness Anti-Stigma Campaign
Kansas City’s Jewish community is not immune to
mental illness which is prevalent in America. According to
the National Institutes of Mental Health, “Mental illnesses
are very common; in fact, they are more common than
cancer, diabetes or heart disease.”
In recent years, our community has suffered loss
from the impact of mental illness. Now, in response to that
suffering, steps are being taken to address the stigma of
mental illness and educate the community about its impact
and the resources that are available to help.
The Jewish Community Mental Health Coalition, volunteers, Jewish Family Services
and the Rabbinical Association, is

friendship and community among the Synagogue
members. They are providing ushers for the upcoming High Holy Days. If anyone is interested

1. A Day at the Royals as they take on the Texas Rangers, Sunday September 22 for an afternoon game.
2. Have lunch & beverages in Goldsmith Hall, Sunday, October 20, to
watch the KC Chiefs vs. the Texans.
