Articles should be emailed as Word files (.doc),

The word “Periplus” stems from Greek, meaning
‘journey’ and also means a circumnavigation
or sea voyage around a coastline. The use of a
Periplus, or journal, dates back to the second
century AD and was a document listing in order,
the ports and coastal landmarks. In that sense,
the Periplus was a type of log similar to the
modern day ship’s log.

Commodore’s Report
Dear PCYC Members,
It is amazing how fast this year has gone. It is hard to believe it is almost summer. I hope you are all
continuing to enjoy the great weather by getting out on your boats, enjoying the pool, or trying our
kayaks or paddle boards.
In the last month we have had many great events. We had a packed house for Mother’s Day, enjoyed
an elegant Commodore’s Ball, took our boats on a cruise to Marina del Rey, enjoyed a Memorial Day
BBQ by the pool and had a Hawaiian luau pool party for the junior fleet. It was a busy May, but we
are just getting started for the season!
You may have noticed three beautiful perpetual trophies in our trophy room. They were won by Austin Artis and his wife
Karen Keltner in the 2015 Newport to Ensenada race and are for best elapsed time in the cruising class, best adjusted time
in their particular class, and best cruising time by a Beneteau. Austin and Karen are new members, having joined in the
last few months, but are not new to the Club as Austin’s parents, Jennifer and Winthrop Artis, are long-time members. This
was their first time entering the race on their own boat, a 50ft Beneteau, Sweptaway, and they had Austin’s parents, brother
and sister as crew. Please join me in congratulating the entire Artis family on their impressive showing.
By publication time, Pacific Corinthian Youth Foundation will be just about ready to start their program for the year.
PCYF runs two week day camps, located at PCYC, that teach young people how to sail. It is a terrific program and is
available to members and non members. Spaces are still available; you can sign up at www.pcyfsailing.org. Participants
need to be 8 years or older and must be able to swim.
I would be remiss if I didn’t thank Flo Beck for organizing our wonderful Commodore’s Ball on May 16th. The elegant
evening was chaired by Flo and the decorations were done by Marji Miller. The theme for the evening was For the Love
of the Sea. To go with the theme, the room was decorated in colors of blue, reminiscent of the colors of the sea and we
enjoyed a wonderful seafood meal. The Pier 101 band entertained us both during the cocktail hour and for dancing after
dinner. We were all having such a good time that we out-danced the band. We owe a big thank you to Flo, Marji and the
entire committee for putting on such a wonderful event. We could never provide all that we do without the support and
guidance of so many volunteers.

Vice Commodore’s Report
Well, here it is June already. It is more than half way through my term as Vice Commodore; how
time flies when you are having fun. The month of May was somewhat of a challenge. There was an
old termite problem in the downstairs bar that needed immediate repairing. While I was dealing
with this problem, we had a major water leak in a high pressure line in the trophy room area. The
water broke through the ceiling as one of our prospective members was signing his membership
forms. Thanks to Mike Coello, Marina Manager, and our go-to-guy Rudy Cerna for their fast work
in placing an emergency patch on the pipe before it could cause more damage.
We had our second meeting with the NAI Log Racing Committee. (North American Invitational
Navigational Contest) at the Ventura Yacht Club this past month. Past member Ken Collins and I will be in charge of
obtaining donated boats for the race, which will be held September 9 thru 15, off our coast. Any of our club members, who
would like to provide a boat for the race, please contact me.
Congratulations, again to the Artis family, Jennifer, Winthrop, Austin, and Karen for representing PCYC in the Newport to
Ensenada race, and winning in three categories! Great job!
The House Committee is still working on ways to redecorate the dining room, which will spruce it up but not cost an arm
and a leg. We are also comparing costs for new pool furniture. The present furniture is pretty tired and needs a lot of
repairing.

The participation in social activities this year has been great and we thank you for your support. If

The Cinco de Mayo party on May 2 was a great success. Marge Curley was the sponsor of this
event. Those who helped with the exceptional decorations were Susan Peck, Karen Lorenzen, Susan
Kaufman, Joanie Wolf, Jeanette Fox, and Annie Dalby. Thank you and well done!
Ladies Who Do Lunch will be June 7 to June 11. The theme is “Everything Is Coming Up Roses” and I am certain it will be
another great event.

Ladies Who Do Lunch
Have you made your reservations for the Thursday, June 11th luncheon, “Everything is Coming up
Roses”? Hostess Annie Dalby invited Certified Rosarian and Board Member of the Ventura County
Rose Society, Barbara Morse to share her knowledge of the wonderful world of roses with us. Whether
you have your own rose garden or simply enjoy the beauty and smell of these gorgeous plants, this
program is not to be missed.
Social hour will begin at 11 with lunch served at noon. Enjoy a yummy, fresh Farmer’s salad of mixed greens, strawberries
and walnuts topped with either chicken or salmon, or choose PCYC’s delicious Cobb Salad. There is a special ice cream
sundae delight for dessert. Barbara’s fascinating talk will follow the meal. Come early with friends and stay late, maybe even
have dinner at the club.
I am thrilled to report due to your generosity, the front entryway fresh flower vases filled with orchids (created by Audrey
Keller) and the PCYC logo carpet were completed and ready for Opening Day. What a great welcome for our members
and guests! We have some additional funds and are currently working on raising sufficient monies to replace the worn-out
chairs, lounges and tables pool side. The support for all of the LWDL projects comes from your kind contributions to our
opportunity baskets offered at each luncheon. If you have new or unused items you would like to donate or would like to
help make the baskets, please contact our very creative basket-maker Pam Miller ([email protected]).
It’s not too early to get a group together and reserve a table at the luncheon by calling the Front Desk. In addition to an
excellent program and scrumptious food, our ladies luncheons are a fun way to introduce new members and your friends
to what’s happening at PCYC.

IN GENERAL Brenda Dickmann
I am pleased to announce that we are on target with our projected 2015 budget for the Main Dining Room and
Bar for Food and Beverage. The Quartermaster, S/C Graham Wilson, and I have been working hand-in-hand to
ensure a proper budget between sales and staffing employees.
I hope that you have been enjoying the member parties. We are really trying hard to bring the best to you. If you
have any suggestions for ideas or bands you may know, certainly do not hesitate to let me know.
We recently had our first standup comedian. Bill’s Bar was standing room only. We must have had 100 people
enjoying themselves! It was really great to see PCYC’s new Nightclub. Look for more fun and exciting evenings
to come.
The member suggestion box has been empty. I keep checking and I find no suggestions! If you have a suggestion, menu idea, a food
allergy, anything you would like to discuss, please drop it in the box. “The Member Suggestion Box” is located on the left wall near the
front desk. You will also see the Account Box for member’s monthly statements. Please make sure that you drop your suggestion in the
suggestion box and your monthly (stamp free) statement in the Accounting Box. We do find statements in the suggestion box!
If you are planning a party, belong to an organization, or know of someone who may be planning a party – wedding, reception,
graduation, etc. - and are looking for a location to host their event, please have them call the Front Desk, the calendar is becoming
quite full! We wouldn’t want you to miss out on a beautiful location and fantastic food.
Please remember to make your reservations for all the wonderful events we have scheduled throughout the year. If you have any special
orders, we ask that you call in one week in advance of the event. This will help the chef prepare for you.

Hello boaters and waterfront lovers.
WEATHER
I still think we are going to get some heavy rains in June and July much to the relief of desert residents. I find
myself forgetting the natural climate of Southern California is coastal desert. I’m still holding on with the El
Nino weather pattern of 2014 we should be very rainy during late spring.
Possible hazardous weather could come in the form of funnel clouds. A boat may experience medium to
moderate damage if it comes in contact with a funnel cloud. These funnel clouds are generally seen on the
weather radar and broadcasted on your VHF weather channels. If you are offshore and a rain squall hits, turn on your VHF and leave
on for warnings.
FISHING
Local fishing cooled off when the water temp dropped below 60 degrees throughout our region offshore. This will cool off the fishing
until ocean warming starts in July.
One may want to take a look at the salmon fishery during June and July. I knew a fisherman who fished his entire fishing year
exclusively for salmon and did very well most years. He generally fished outside Pitas Point north of Ventura and most always trolled
using down riggers.
I would tend to look hard at the Halibut beds the next two months through July. With the lack of squid in our local waters these
spawning fish will be aggressive towards feed. I have been perfecting catching fin baits (small live swimming mackerel and kingfish in
the 5 to 7 inch size). I have pretty well figured out being able to catch about fifty baits for an hour effort, mostly Kingfish and Spanish
Mackerel with a catch of a handful of Queen Fish once in a while. In the 1960 to 1980 fishing era these baits were referred to as “brown
bait” because of the brow color. Everything eats brown bait from Calico Bass to Thresher Sharks and all species in between. They live
well in the bait tanks. The last batch I caught lasted 6 days before I released them back into the ocean with rough weather predicted
for 7 days forward. Not a single bait died and they all were eating fishy cat food once a day during their stay with me. If you would like

YACHTS
We recently had an OPEN YACHT event with 12 Yachts open for viewers. It really proved to be a good way to get new boaters on
board. It also gave me a chance to talk to people wanting to join the lifestyle. I often thought we needed a way for newcomers to touch a
yacht in person and get the dream started. We definitely accomplished that and more. Yes, there are new boaters looking to get into our
boating lifestyle.

PCYC Cruisers and Landlubbers
Lots to report for our cruising program. By the time you read this, we will be back from our cruise
to Marina Del Rey on May 22nd thru the 25th. Lots of sign-ups for the cruise. I will fill you in next
month.
CRUISE to SANTA BARBARA APRIL 17-19th, 2015
We had a great cruise to Santa Barbara in April. On Friday, six boats participated in our first log race
to Santa Barbara. With “For Ever Young” winning the Log Race by having its experienced Captain
and Navigator Bruce & Cindy Walker coming up with the winning time of arrival. Great dinner at
the SBYC and cocktails on Lady Sadie II.
On Saturday, thanks to Dottie Skidmore for the hard work in arranging a wonderful wine tour to three wineries in Santa
Rita Hills, thirteen of our club members participated in wine tasting at three wineries, including the Clos Pepe Winery,
where we were given a free private tour and tasting of their fine wines. After a full day of wine tasting, the happy group
ended the wonderful tour with a joyous drive back to the harbor. Most were not in the mood to go out for the evening;
however, a few adventurous couples made it to their favorite restaurants. The rest flaked out on La Bella Vita.
Weather was great on Sunday for the cruise back to PCYC.

“The Best for the West” - Want to know which roses do best here in Ventura County?
Speaker: Barbara Morse was raised on the east coast and learned to garden alongside her parents in New York
and Connecticut. She loves the out-of-doors and putting her hand to the earth. Roses have always been a part of her life.
She has been a member of the American Horticultural Society and the American Rose Society for well over 25 years.
In 1994 Barbara took training and became a docent at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. The following year she completed
the Master Gardener training there. She began degree work at Santa Barbara City College in environmental horticulture
and is currently enrolled in class.
At home Barbara has grown wall-to-wall roses for 35 years, primarily in pots, and loves the sights and smells of her
“jungle garden”. She is currently on the board of the Ventura County Rose Society and a certified Rosarian. She is the
Horticulturalist with the Westlake Village Garden Club. She helps maintain the heritage rose garden at the
Stage Coach Museum in Newbury Park.

Newport to Ensenada Race - PCYC’s Very Own Members Take Three Trophies!
This PCYC member Austin Artis sailed his house to Ensenada, along with a friend, his wife, mother, father,
brother and sister as crew. But they sailed their home and newly crowned race boat, a 50-foot Beneteau
Oceanis Sweptaway so well they’re leaving with three trophies: The Secretary of Foreign Relations, Mexico
Trophy, for best elapsed time in the Cruz class; the Blue Gavel Trophy for Best Corrected Cruz, Gen A Class
and Best Corrected Beneteau, Cruz Trophy.
When Artis is not working as a harbor patrol officer in Channel Islands Harbor, he and his wife Karen
Keltner run an outdoor education program for kids. Although this is Sweptaway’s first N2E, Artis was on a
boat that placed third overall in the 2011 race and he has sailed since he was 12.

I’m sure by now you have heard about the IOBG/Maritime Museum Chowder Fest. We will need lots of
volunteers, chairpersons, ticket sales etc. from the local yacht clubs. I have attached a flyer. Please pass this

A collaborative CHOWDERFEST fundraiser to be hosted by IOBG (International Order of the
Blue Gavel), local Yacht Clubs, and CIMM (Channel Islands Maritime Museum) on
Saturday, August 8, 2015 from 4pm - 11pm.
Selected community restaurants are invited to participate in a Chowder Tasting competition —
enter your exceptional flavors in our Chowder Cook-off (clam, manhattan, corn, potato,
veggie…..) and support the Channel Islands Maritime Museum: a hard-working local nonprofit
gem that gives back to the community every day of the year.
Benefits to restaurants include:
• bragging rights with Chowder tasting victory trophy to be defended in future summers
