ISS
“nothing happens until somebody sells it”
The RTC Group, with our first show “The Do’s and Don’ts of the VMEbus”
in 1987, set our corporate mission to provide industry vendors with low-cost,
high-impact sales leads. Over the years we’ve evolved to include branding,
market analysis, lead generation, direct marketing and sales support.
The philosophy of that first show and every subsequent marketing vehicle has
been to bring together leading technology providers with potential customers
in manageable, meaningful and effective ways. The RTC Group principles are
unique, and they work.

FROM THE CEO
Marketing Professional,
This year we took a different tack to our media kits: a direction that reflects my position that 2013 will
be a year of “all hands on deck.” In previous years, I spoke about survival as we endured a tough economy,
but I have a sense that we can no longer be satisfied with “battening down the hatches.” It is now time to
rally all hands for a return to growth and profitability.
The armada of products offered by the RTC Group is conveyed in this way to let you know that although
you may just participate in one or two activities, the fleet is behind our efforts. In 2012 we set forth with
a number of new projects that included a new journal, a new event and a new web activity. Intelligent
Systems Source is one I am particularly proud of, as it provides the engineering community a tool unparalleled in the market.
As you review the challenges facing your company in 2013, you will be faced with a wide array of marketing vehicles. Some will claim that you can create communities; some will suggest that everyone in the
industry is viewing your products; and yet others will give you the privilege of betting against your competition, all under the guise of driving traffic. But do not let these cloud your view. For the past 26 years I
have pushed the concept that our events must result in a “handshake” lead, and that our publications be a
“must read” for our industry.
So it is with pleasure that I introduce yet another industry first—Intelligent Systems Source (ISS). I
believe that building shareholder equity starts with sales, and this is why ISS is built on the premise that
it must result in sales for our clients. This fully indexed parametric search tool will afford engineers an
opportunity to compare and contrast an array of solutions all on one site. They can read datasheets,
watch video clips, read white papers, and in the end—the best part of all—they can buy the product. You
want to compare the feature sets of all VME boards? You can do it. You want to compare all ARM-based
boards? You can do it. You can view hundreds of solutions, and if one stands out because you saw it in
one of our publications, or spoke to the salesperson at one of our events, so much the better.
So as you look through the following pages, I hope you enjoy the experience and envision how the RTC
Group can aid in growing your company through stronger branding and greater lead generation.
May 2013 be a calm sea and steady wind.

OFFERING ASSISTANCE IN THE CONFIGURATION OF INTELLIGENT
SYSTEMS
Intelligent Systems Source is a parametric search engine for design engineers seeking a side-by-side comparison of off-the-shelf system modules and SBCs. Today’s systems combine an array of very complex
modules from multiple manufacturers. To assist in these complex architectures, ISS built a simple tool
that sources products from an array of companies for side-by-side comparison. Drawing from its success
in the silicon market, ISS utilizes a parametric search tool that combines an ease of use and an understanding of the technology for an elegant solution to system design.
Who is behind ISS?
ISS is a joint marketing venture between Embedded Developer, LLC (a joint venture of Convergence
Promotions LLC and Hearst Electronics Group) and the RTC Group, Inc. The companies were drawn
together to combine their individual strengths for the benefit of the entire industrial computer market. This strategic agreement combines an unparalleled size and ability for your benefit. Each of these
companies has pledged their full resources to affirm the greatest potential for creating demand for your
products and services.
THE INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS SOURCE USERS
In today’s market, more and more applications are delayed by the inability to locate the exact solution
required. Systems engineers find themselves either combing through corporate site after corporate site to
locate a specific need, or become resigned to the fact that a custom solution may be required. ISS brings
confidence to decision making by indexing a compendium of solutions through an advanced search tool
with the most nuanced features of importance.
The demographic goal of ISS is to mirror those of RTC magazine and the Real-Time & Embedded
Computing Conference (RTECC). These two products have maintained their position as leaders in the
market for over two decades.

The world is now full of billions of connected intelligent devices that often operate autonomously but
shape the everyday world we live in, which is increasingly more apparent to us via a phenomenon of
ubiquitous smartphones and tablet PCs. The silicon world chases smaller, faster, computationally more
powerful and yet less power-consuming devices. Ever more intelligence is being packed into ever more
and ever smaller devices. All of these devices, many of which were previously isolated, are now connected
via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee, 4G and more wireless connectivity and ultimately to the Internet and the
Cloud. This surge in connectivity, intelligence and vast amounts of data has led to the emergence of Intelligent Systems, which will increasingly permeate our lives.
These things are all contributions of the readers of RTC magazine. These are the engineers, product developers,
project team leaders, hardware and software architects, testers and executives who understand the underlying
technology and how to transform it into the products and applications that shape our smarter, more connected world. They come to RTC to find and share insights on the latest technological developments and the
techniques for applying them in manufacturing, medicine, communications, transportation, digital signage,
building management, and the expansion and renewal of our national infrastructure through efforts such as
the development of the Smart Grid, machine-to-machine intelligence and the Internet of things.
RTC stands ready with its experienced editorial staff to bring the latest developments and in-depth
analysis to help select and apply the means to create the products that will continue to make our world
smarter, more connected, and a better place to live.

EDITORIAL SECTIONS
TECHNOLOGY IN CONTEXT
This section follows developments in the
technology underlying the development of
embedded systems. It includes the latest advances
in processors, form factors, programmable logic
devices and standards. It also covers approaches
like fault tolerance, system management
techniques, hot-swap and thermal management,
high availability and safety-critical concerns.
Technology in Context focuses on the
foundations upon which embedded systems are
built.
TECHNOLOGY CONNECTED
Today, most embedded devices are connected
via a serial link or network to other embedded
devices, supervisory systems and ultimately to the
Internet. The newer, faster serial interconnect
technologies like PCI Express, USB and RapidIO,
as well as variations on industrial Ethernet, also
interface with legacy technologies such as CAN
and ProfiBus, serial interconnects and a host
of wireless technologies. These include 802.11,
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and a variety of wireless sensor
network technologies. These myriad technologies
and protocols eventually flow into Ethernet and
the Internet, and the Technology Connected
section keeps our readers informed on the latest
developments in connectivity in the embedded
world.

TECHNOLOGY IN SYSTEMS
Putting together the three major components
of any computer-based system—CPU, software
and I/O—is often challenging, especially since
the I/O and the software must be specifically
tailored to the application and processor. There
are also often other components such as a storage
subsystem and a display. This activity requires the
developer to evaluate and select the components,
integrating them electrically and mechanically,
and developing and optimizing the application
code. This section will look at the issues,
techniques and the tools for system development
and integration.
TECHNOLOGY development
Embedded systems are developed on a wide
range of hardware platforms using perhaps
even a broader selection of development tools,
techniques and software. Despite that, many
of the design compoents, tools and techniques
have similarities that developers learn, share and
reuse. Many of these newer tools and approaches
have been developed to keep up with continuing
advances in processors, FPGAs and SoCs.
This section covers the design challenges that
developers face and the ways they approach them
using operating systems, development and analysis
tools, middleware and programming languages.

cots defined
COTS (kots), n. 1. Commercial off-the-shelf. Terminology
popularized in 1994 within U.S. DoD by SECDEF Wm.
Perry’s “Perry Memo” that changed military industry
purchasing and design guidelines, making Mil-Specs
acceptable only by waiver. COTS is generally defined for
technology, goods and services as: a) using commercial
business practices and specifications, b) not developed
under government funding, c) offered for sale to the general
market, d) still must meet the program ORD. 2. Commercial
business practices include the accepted practice of customerpaid minor modification to standard COTS products to
meet the customer’s unique requirements.
– Ant. When applied to the procurement of electronics
for the U.S. Military, COTS is a procurement philosophy
and does not imply commercial, office environment or any
other durability grade. E.g., rad-hard components designed
and offered for sale to the general market are COTS if they
were developed by the company and not under government
funding.

the perfect vehicle
Budget tightening and program shifts make it imperative
to secure the highest degree of effectiveness for every
marketing dollar.
Tight military budgets present both obstacles and opportunities to suppliers of electronic and computer
systems. At all levels, those who provide the most cost-effective solutions are more likely to achieve
success. As political priorities shift, the focus has turned to reliance on proven technologies while system
hardware is used to replace personnel. The challenge is finding ways to avoid development costs while
still designing to meet mission requirements.
To thrive in this changing environment, readers need the best quality of technical material to help them
design and build embedded computer-based systems for the military—across the whole spectrum from
benign applications to the most rugged, mission-critical gear the battlefield, sky or water demands.
COTS Journal stands out from its competition—not only because it is the only technology publication
addressing the military market—but also because of the quality of its editorial staff. These seasoned
veterans of the computer, defense and publishing industries are dedicated to selecting the most useful
information and putting it in context that’s targeted for developers of military systems. The staff also
participates in the industry and is often asked to provide technology and market trend briefings for
industry and government events.
Its top notch coverage of technology is only part of the reason COTS Journal is known as the publication
of record for its industry. While other media sources claim to cover technology, COTS Journal is unique
in that it covers technology at a level specifically for engineers. Both staff-written and contributed articles
must meet a threshold of quality and technical depth that’s suited to help our readers get their jobs
done—and do so under today’s new challenges and constraints.

COTS JOURNAL
each featuring a category of military electronics and computing
COTS Journal is committed to providing in-depth and technically significant editorial coverage of the
military electronics market. Advertisers are encouraged to expand their presence particularly in issues
reflecting company products and contributions. And if you’re interested in contributing or expanding
your brand within a particular technology segment, COTS Journal gives you influence.
SPECIAL FEATURE
SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT
Understanding which technology trends are
most relevant to the military is not only about
the “latest and greatest.” The defense industry is
unique in that the focus is more on choosing the
right technologies—integrating proven solutions
with new innovations—to meet the requirements
for the platform. The challenge is sorting out
which technologies offer the critical mass, market
longevity and physical attributes suited for
design. With that in mind, articles in this section
highlight the important technology trends and
place them in context for readers.
Few industries have as rigorous system test and
software development phases as the military.
This section covers the tools and trends in
military software development, ruggedized test
and security assurance. Articles focus on shock
and vibration testing, cooling, safety-critical
standards, EMI/RFI and other hardware and
software test-related technologies.
TECH RECON
Today’s military system developers are relying
more than ever on suppliers of embedded
computers and electronics to be the experts in
the areas they develop products for. Whether
it’s computer design, data acquistion technology
or enclosure configurations, the technology
suppliers have a lot to teach the industry. Using
staff-written and contributed articles, this section
connects readers to the best information to help
them create cost-effective solutions that meet
mission requirements.
TECH FOCUS
Each month this section focuses on a different
narrowly defined area of technology and
provides readers with a roundup of representative
products in that category. This gives readers the
opportunity to compare and contrast the available
product solutions on the market along with a
glimpse into how these product areas are evolving
year to year.
COTS VIEW
This off-calendar section lets our editors
tackle technology trends that don’t fit into the
predefined editorial calendar. These can include
technologies that became significant or changed
somehow since the editorial calendar was put
together.
