Producer Organisations (POs) used to be the lifeblood of the
horticultural industry. If effective, they give growers the chance to
focus on the production side of the business while giving them
support in the areas of marketing, sales, technical advice and
innovation. At the same time, growers could share valuable
knowledge and experience. It was in many respects, a perfect
scenario. And then the EU got involved. The result was a reform
of the Producer Organisation system that led to a number of
PO’s disappearing and/or losing their members throughout
Europe. The reform also meant funding became harder to obtain
- more to do with bureaucracy rather then lack of money.
Sadly, the upshot has meant many PO’s are struggling in the
UK. Some have closed altogether and growers are a lot worse
off as a result.
That is why Conservative MEP Anthea McIntyre is right to urge
the EU to make Producer Organisations more attractive for fruit
and vegetable growers to join. She rightly says that too much
‘red tape’ was putting growers off joining POs and that there
needed to be a system that was more effective and adaptive to
market conditions. The other challenge was that PO rules are
open to wide interpretation by the Commission’s auditors, which
leads to a high degree of legal uncertainty.
What should happen now is a change in rules to allow POs to
thrive and prosper again. They need to be attractive to grower
members if they are going to be anything like they use to be.
This needs to happen sooner rather than later before it is too
late and the POs that do remain think it is too difficult to
continue.
POs are still a great opportunity for the horticultural sector and
they can still help smaller-medium sized growers to develop their
businesses and share knowledge, expertise and even costs.
No doubt the supermarkets would also welcome dealing with
more POs. It suits the way they do business, to deal with a
group of producers rather than lots individually. POs also give a
certain degree of protection against the supermarkets, so it
would surely be a win/win situation.
The story of POs and their relationship with the EU does
highlight what is wrong with Europe. Although the EU can
sometimes be helpful in facilitating trading between countries,
the level of bureaucracy still often outweighs the positives when
it comes to doing business in Europe. The time, the effort and
the resources needed just to interpret EU law and then apply it
to your own businesses has become more and more of a
challenge. The same is true when applying for funding.
The result is that it can actually end up costing you more to pay
for all this bureaucracy and form filling in, preparing audits, going
through bidding processes etc, taking away valuable time and
money that could go directly into developing the business
instead. This sort of madness can’t continue.

Autumn potting advice at
nutrient workshop
College invests in new
glass for training
Growers planning autumn potting of nursery stock crops were
reminded of the importance of choosing the right rate and
formulation of controlled release fertiliser (CRF) to avoid the
risk of crop damage, during a recent series of container plant
nutrition workshops organised by HDC.
“You should be looking at lower incorporation rates for
autumn potting, and remember that protected crops will need
lower rates compared with outdoor crops because
temperatures are likely to be warmer and the pots will not be
so subject to leaching,” said growing media consultant Susie
Holmes.
“While there is a risk of warm temperatures in October
causing release of nutrients when the plant demand is low, we
have also seen high temperatures in March in some years
recently. A sudden warm spell could trigger nutrient release
before the plant has started growing. That’s one of the
benefits of incorporating an ingredient such as bark with a
good buffering capacity.”
For autumn-potted crops that will be overwintered under
protection, she says the CRF release pattern for the first two
months is particularly important to avoid the risk of root
damage during that period. “Some of the newer double
coated products can be useful here,” she added.
The series of workshops, held at five nurseries across
England over the summer, covered plant nutritional
requirements, nutrient interactions, fertiliser programmes and
legislation with presentations from Bulrush Horticulture
development director Neil Bragg and nursery stock consultant
John Adlam as well as by Ms Holmes.
Two new glasshouses are on course to be ready for the
autumn term at Kingston Maurward College in Dorchester,
Dorset.
The structures, a venlo and an XK30 from Cambridge HOK,
total 900sq m between them and will be used not only to
produce plants and produce as part of the students’ courses
but also to house the college estate’s plant collections – it
holds a national collection of penstemons and salvias.
The £850,000 project, to replace two outdated polytunnels
and a redundant 1960s glasshouse, is being paid for by a
grant from the Skills Funding Agency together with a
‘substantial contribution’ from the college via its governors,
from a fund earmarked for important buildings that would
significantly improve students’ learning, the college said.
It added: ‘These new buildings will allow students to do more
of their own monitoring, research and data collection and carry
out computer-linked scientific research.’
Kingston Maurward offers four full-time diplomas,
apprenticeships and various part-time courses in horticulture.
“Interest in full-time courses remains consistent year on year,”
said Esther Baker, of the college’s marketing team. “Often it is
more mature students seeking a change of career – we do
find that once students have completed their courses they
tend to stay within the industry.”

New IPM guide
Neil Bragg’s workshop presentation included a practical
session on getting the best from liquid feed dilutors – he
recommends they should be taken apart, cleaned and
recalibrated every six months. “Don’t get hung up on the
pH of water samples,” he said. “The key is water
hardness.”

Fargro have produced a 20 page full colour IPM Guide for the
control of Vine Weevil on ornamental nurseries. The guide is
designed to highlight the options available to growers in
constructing a suitable IPM programme.
The options are based on the life cycle of the
pest, the resources available to the grower and
the way the crops are grown.
This guide will be an invaluable reference for
growers in implementing effective control
strategies for this key pest.

Statutory control to end
for tomato pest
Statutory action against the
South American tomato
moth Tuta absoluta will
cease after the end of
December following the
outcome of Fera’s
consultation with the
industry.
Since the pest was first
found in Britain, in 2009,
outbreaks have been
managed under the EU
plant health directive which
requires statutory action
against non-native pests.
But it was only ever a
temporary emergency
measure, said UK chief
plant health officer Nicola
Spence. Consequently Fera
had sought views on two
alternative options: the
introduction of protected
zone status in the UK; or
the removal of statutory
controls, leaving the
industry to manage the risk.
In its response, the Tomato
Growers Association said it
would have preferred
national action to continue,
but since that was no longer
open to growers, it favoured
industry management over a
protected zone. The moth is
no more likely to be
eradicated than whitefly or
spider mite and any attempt
to enforce eradication would
be extremely costly to
growers, disruptive to
production and unlikely to
succeed without lengthy
breaks in cropping.
Professor Spence said that
the UK plant health authority
acknowledged that growers’
ability to manage the pest
as part of an IPM strategy
will depend on continued
availability of the
insecticides Coragen and
Conserve. Use of these in a
way found to be most
effective against the pest is
currently only allowed under
the terms of an official plant
pest notice, so the industry
now has to apply for its own
approvals.
Golden Acres Nurseries
equipment sale
Golden Acres Nurseries is to hold a sale of some of its
glasshouse production equipment at the beginning of
September after a decision was taken earlier in the year to
cease production of bedding plants so that the company can
focus on its garden centre business. The company used to
produce over three million bedding plants a year.
The sale comes after the company leased out its glasshouses
on the nursery site to Dorset Plants in January. Items for sale
include; transplanters, tray fillers, vertical bale breakers, drum
seeders, lorries, forklifts, conveyors, pots, wrapping machines,
sprayers, trays, labels, baskets, benches and trolleys.
A spokesman for Golden Acres Nurseries told The
Commercial Greenhouse Grower that the ‘focus on the future
was very much about developing the company’s five garden
centre’s’.
Lots will be auctioned on September 9th by Symonds and
Sampson at the nursery site which can be found at 397
Christchurch Rd, West Parley, Ferndown, Dorset. BH22 8SJ

New locally sourced
initiative launched
Defra has launched a new initiative aimed at encouraging
the public sector to source more locally grown produce.
From 2017, central government will commit to buying fresh,
locally sourced, seasonal food, through a new, simplified
food and drink buying standard-meaning £400 million of
potential new business for the British food industry.
The public sector in England spends £1.2 billion every year
on food and drink. Up to £600 million of that is spent on
imported produce, £400 million of which could be sourced
from within the UK. The commitment from central
government to use this new buying standard means that
just over half of the £400 million will be up for grabs by
British farmers. In addition, the wider public sector will be
encouraged and supported in using the new framework with
the expectation that all schools and hospitals will, in future,
serve more locally reared meats and freshly picked fruit and
vegetables.
Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss said: “This move will
mean that food served in canteens across the public sector
can be more local, seasonal and tastier.
It will help drive growth in Britain’s first class food and drink
industry and benefit the environment through reduced
waste, higher take-up of meals and less unappetising food
left on plates.
This is a huge boost to British farmers and producers and
for students, patients and employees who want to enjoy
fantastic food.”
British farmers are expected to benefit significantly from the
plan because British farmers are best placed to meet these
tough new standards.
In addition to backing local and sustainable food, the new
standards prioritise procurement from smaller producers,
thereby helping SMEs gain access to the lucrative public
sector market.

Retailers, growers and suppliers to the garden industry are
invited to attend the British Ornamental Plant Producers
(BOPP) AGM & Technical Seminar which takes place on
Thursday 25 September 2014 at the Oak Tree, Stoneleigh
Park, Coventry. The event will bring guests together to learn
about and discuss the current issues affecting the industry
and also provide an update on the strategy and activities of
the BOPP Scheme.
New for the event this year will be the chance for delegates
to attend two workshops. These workshops will be interactive
and provide the opportunity to explore the different topics that
affect individual businesses.
Consultant Paula Edgington will host a workshop on the
importance of developing, implementing and maintaining a
quality management system within a business, along with an
achievable and effective policy and objectives.
Anna Cook (HTA) will host a workshop focusing on supplier
management covering aspects such as the benefits of
effective management and tools to assess the risks associated
with suppliers. There will also be an interactive exercise for
delegates to participate in.
Adding to the line-up of speakers on the day, Horticultural
Development Company’s Bolette Neve, will discuss what the
future holds after a new wave of regulatory pressure has left
growers with reduced options for crop protection. Bolette will
explore how we navigate this new regulatory landscape. Other
key speakers include Dan Murray, SEDEX and Raoul CurtisMachin, HTA.
The AGM & Technical Seminar 2014 promises to be a mustattend event for all those looking to keep up to date with the
latest legislation and important issues concerning British

A Dutch-developed
alternative to soil steaming
or sterilisation for disease
management is being
included in the HDC crop
protection project ‘Managing
ornamental plants
sustainably’, or MOPS,
which started this year.
Described as ‘soil
resetting’, it uses organic
products derived from food
processing. After
application, the soil surface
is covered by plastic and left
for several weeks. Anaerobic
conditions created as the
products break down
generate compounds that
are toxic to pathogens.
ADAS consultant and
MOPS project leader John
Atwood told the Cut Flower
Centre open evening last
month that the technique
was being trialled on
fusarium wilt introduced into
nursery soil by debris from a
stocks crop. “An anaerobic
bacteria ‘starter’ will also be
tested to see if it speeds up
the process,” he said.

Protected crops grant funding New TEKU seedling tray
A project to develop a new way of controlling grey mould,
caused by Botrytis cinerea, on cut flowers and tomatoes has
won a grant worth almost £1 million from the Technology
Strategy Board.
The work, which will be led by flower suppliers Finlay Flowers
UK, is researching a ‘non-contact’ approach to eradicating the
pathogen both before and after harvest by using a
combination of ultraviolet light and ethylene scrubbing.
Other projects which also won funding to evaluate the
technical feasibility of an idea included two on strawberries
grown under protection. One will investigate the key traits that
varieties need for production in soil-less substrates – many
strawberry breeding programmes still select and trial new
varieties in soil in the open field. The second is looking at
developing new biological products based on mycorrhizal
fungi and rhizobacteria which, used in the substrate, could
promote plant growth and tolerance to powdery mildew.
The funding will come from the government’s Agri-Tech
Catalyst fund, launched a year ago. Five horticultural projects
are already to receive grants for ‘early-stage’ work to explore
the commercial potential of their ideas. These include work on
hydroponic production in protected cropping, the use of plant
viruses to help identify genes in wild crop relatives,
improvements to the seed priming process for leafy
vegetables and salads and pesticides research.

Five of the trays fit into each CC shelf, allowing 520

‘Cut PO red tape’, urges MEP Shielded ornamental sprayer can
Conservative MEP Anthea
McIntyre is pressing the EU
to make Producer
Organisations (POs) more
attractive for fruit and
vegetable growers to join.
Speaking at a meeting of
the European Parliament’s
Agriculture Committee,
where the Commission
presented a report on the
implementation of POs
since reform in 2007, Miss
McIntyre said the scheme
needed to be more effective
and adaptive to market
conditions.
She said too much red
tape was putting growers
off joining POs. “The UK’s
experience of the most
recent mid-term evaluation
suggests that the questions
asked of POs were not
always relevant to the way
they conduct business and
duplicated some of the
annual reporting,” she said.
She added that PO rules
are open to wide
interpretation by the
Commission’s auditors,
which leads to a high
degree of legal uncertainty,
and described the recent
introduction of penalties as
‘extremely punitive and
unnecessary’.
Miss McIntyre, who earlier
this year wrote a report on
strategies for growing
Europe’s horticultural
sector, said the UK is one
of only two member states
where the number of POs is
declining.
reduce drift by 95%
Manufacturer of precision sprayers and applicators, Micron
Group, will present its tractor-mounted Varidome band sprayer
and a range of portable equipment for tree nurseries and
ornamental crops at this year’s Four Oaks event (page 16).
Visitors to Micron’s stand OP32 will be able to see the
Varidome S1 mounted on Micron’s 100 litre Tank System. The
sprayer uses shielded technology which allows users to safely
and accurately target weeds growing between the rows of
plants. Varidome’s shields are proven to reduce drift by over
95% which means non-selective herbicides can be put
through the sprayer thus significantly reducing chemical cost.
The sprayer also offers environmental benefits as the spray is
only applied where it is needed. Each Varidome’s shield is
mounted on a ground following wheel to further reduce drift
and provide better product placement.
The Varidome S1 on display will be fitted with a number of
different shield sizes to demonstrate the sprayer’s versatility for
a wide range of applications. New to the show, Micron will
reveal the Varidome 100 HiFlo shield for narrowly planted
crops such as flowers, seed production and tree nurseries.
Fitted with a hydraulic pressure nozzle, the shield is capable of
treating inter-rows between 10 to 45 centimetres and can be
supplied on a lightweight or heavy duty carriage to suit the
terrain.
Micron will also showcase the Herbi range of hand-held
sprayers for weed control, the AU8000 atomiser for outdoor
insecticide and fungicide treatments and the highly popular
Electrafan for pest control in enclosed environments.

There were sixteen nationalities represented at the 45th Fleuroselect International
Convention, hosted by Floranova in Norfolk last month. Just nineteen of the
hundred-plus delegates were British, but Fleuroselect is very much an international
organisation, and even the Dutch only accounted for a third of the gathering.
John Sutton was there for ‘The Commercial Greenhouse Grower’.
Fleuroselect returns to the UK
hough the Fleuroselect

in the Netherlands, the
location of the annual
Convention is changed each
year. In 2013 it was in Italy,
and next year it will be in
France. The most recent
previous occasion in England
was eleven years ago, in
2003.
The crowded programme,
extending over two and a half
days, included the annual
general meeting and an

on page 27), where a
specially composed group
inspected and discussed the

Fleuroselect was founded in

become progressively more
significant since the early
2000’s. At this time
Fleuroselect became active in
monitoring illegal propagation
of vegetatively propagated
varieties for which Plant

many new members were

Gold Medals for the few that
prove their excellence in
performance while being also
significant breeding
innovations, clearly
surpassing existing varieties.
The first ever Fleuroselect
medals were awarded in
1973. Today the trials are
conducted in eleven
countries on eighteen trial
grounds. Three of them are
in the UK, hosted by
Floranova, Sutton’s Seeds
and Thompson & Morgan.
With five, there are more trial
grounds in the Netherlands
than in any other country, but
there are two in Italy, and
one each in Spain, in
Sweden and in Russia, near
Moscow.
While the annual garden
performance trial category is
much the best known, other
trials categories include
indoor pot plants, indoor cut
flowers and biennial/
perennial garden
performance.
Fleuroselect’s membership
still reflects its Western
European origins. However,
the end of the Cold War
opened the doors for East
European and Russian
companies, too. Japan is
well represented, by the
Murakami Seed Co, Sakata,
Takii and Tokita.
While American companies
have their own organisations,
Burpee (Europe) is a
member, and so is
PanAmerican Seed, whose
new varieties, together with
those in its Kieft brand, often
feature in the Gold Medal
winners list. For 2015,
indeed, Kieft has two of the
four, with osteospermum
Akila Daisy White, and the
seed-raised French lavender
Bandera Purple.
There are six British
members of Fleuroselect. In
addition to Kerley & Co,
there are Mr Fothergills’,
Suttons Seeds and
Thompson & Morgan. The
membership of Tozer Seeds
points up the increasing
attention being given to
edibles, where Floranova
also has a major interest with
its associate company
Vegetalis. This year’s trials
include tomatoes for garden
cultivation, and it can only be
a matter of time before a
Gold Medal goes to a
vegetable variety combining
attractive appearance and
utility on the table and in the
kitchen. A new seed-raised
fruit variety has already made
the grade as a Fleuroselect
winner. The strawberry
Toscana, bred by ABZ
Seeds, won the 2013
FleuroStar Award.
A major activity of the
present-day Fleuroselect is to
protect the legal interests of
breeders and propagators.
Fleuroselect each year runs a
Policing Campaign, selecting
the countries and the main
crop species to be
investigated. Last year 44
cases of illegal propagation
were detected in the six
countries covered by the
2013 Campaign. The

offending growers were
obliged to pay a fine as well
as the royalties that they
were trying to evade.
The objective is to make
sure that breeders get their
fair rewards, and have the
incentive to continue their
work. It is also to make sure
that growers have the benefit
of a level playing field, where
everyone pays the royalty on
every plant covered by plant
breeders’ rights legislation.
Upcoming events in the
Fleuroselect programme
include the fifth International
Home Garden conference in
September, and in December
a Breeders’ and Young Plant
Producers’ conference, both
in Germany, and 2015 will be
the Year of the Sunflower, a

campaign that will continue

Cannova Bronze Scarlet is the 2015 winner of the
FleuroStar Award. The result was announced in late July at
the Fleuroselect International Convention gala dinner in
Norfolk. Cannova Bronze Scarlet is an introduction for its
seed-raised F1 hybrid canna series, bred by Takii. South
Pacific Scarlet, the first F1 hybrid canna variety introduced
by the same company, won an All America Selections
award for 2013.
Cannova Bronze Scarlet was the choice of a thirty-strong
expert judging panel, from six new varieties displayed in
nine locations in the Netherlands and Germany during the
Flower Trials in June. The FleuroStar Award goes to the
new variety judged to have the biggest ‘Wow!’ factor, and
so the highest chance of the retail customer making an
impulse purchase.
The Award itself is still quite a recent arrival on the scene,
with the first ever going for 2010 to the dianthus Diabunda
Purple Picotee. In the following years the winners were
petunia Phantom, strawberry Toscana, verbena Lanai
Twister Red, and – for 2014 – gerbera Cartwheel
Strawberry Twist.
Each year six new varieties are selected as Award
competitors by the Entries and Awards committee of
Fleuroselect. All members of the organisation are eligible to
put forward one variety as a candidate, and the
committee’s task is to consider all the evidence submitted
in support of each, before making a decision on the
chosen six.
The five other candidates for the 2015 FleuroStar Award
were the dahlia Dalaya Bali from Selecta Klemm, two
begonias, BIG Pink Green Leaf from Benary and
Unstoppable Upright Peach from Dummen, and two
petunias, Sunpleasure Porch Neon Sugar Beat from
Grunewald, and Mystical Cha-Ching from Florensis.
The winner, the dark-leaved Cannova Bronze Scarlet,
belongs to the world’s first-ever seed-raised canna series.
Bred in the Netherlands, it is claimed to be the earliestflowering canna on the market, with excellent branching
habit. Its performance has proved reliable and long-lasting
in north European conditions, as well as in warmer
climates. The vegetatively propagated varieties that have
previously dominated the canna scene are mostly much
taller, and disease problems in the stocks have often been
◆
difficult to control.

BALL COLEGRAVE OPEN DAYS
Sunshine hours during Ball Colegrave’s annual summer showcase event might well
have set a record this year, and the footfall of trade visitors – more than 1500 actually did. Among them another record was broken, for the number of retailers.
Celebrating colour in the sunshine
any of them came in
response to the
advance publicity
given to nine show gardens,
staged in the style familiar at
Chelsea and Hampton Court.
Some of them sensitively
colour-themed, they were
there to give inspiration for
ideas to help sell more plants
than the traditional retail
approaches to putting out
plants for sale.
For the growers visiting the
Ball Colegrave event,
extending from mid-July to
1st August and located three
miles south of Banbury, there
were more than two hundred
new varieties to see.
KaBloom, the first seedraised calibrachoa series, will
be high on the ‘must-try’ list
of many. The five key colours
have emerged from a very
wide-ranging programme of
trials stretching over the last
three years in several
countries, including the UK.
As a bonus, there is another
important colour, named
M
Crave Terracotta, offered
alongside the KaBloom series
and of closely similar good
growing characteristics. For
2015 these new varieties will
be offered as plug plants.
Endurascape is another new
series name, for a perennial
verbena hardy to -10°C.
Cuttings-propagated, the
robustly spreading habit of
the free-flowering plants was
shown to advantage in patio
containers. Trials visitors, as
in previous years, had been
invited to place a blue flag in
their favourite plant, and a
number were in evidence for
Endurascape on the day of
my own visit. Marketing
manager Stuart Lowen said it
would be good for production
for 12-13cm pots, and by the
look of its habit, it could do
very well as a landscape
plant.
There were no fewer than
fifteen new begonia varieties
to see, including three new
series. Majestic, in five
colours, was one of them,

with very large fully double
blooms as its selling point.
Majestic Sunburst came top
in its category in the National
Plant Show’s visitor vote at its
New Plants Awards
competition.
Another new series,
Starshine, is the first seedraised Begonia boliviensis
hybrid series. Stuart Lowen
commented on its excellent
habit and free branching,
giving very well-shaped
plants. The cuttings-raised

a further colour, Pink, added
for next season - will continue
to have the edge for larger
pots, he thinks, although
given time and space
Starshine plants are claimed
to have a spread of up to
50cm.
There were plenty of notable
one-offs among the new
varieties, either additions to
established series or standalone varieties. The new
dwarf alstroemeria variety
Inticancha Sunshine with its
showy pink blooms was
impressively free flowering,
and the tall perennial lobelia

well-named addition to its

most of its flowers purple,
their colour highlighted by
some that are white. Petunia

originated and developed in Germany
by the breeding company Selecta
Klemm. Customers placed orders in
numbers well beyond expectation. The
sky-frames that are a well known
feature of the company’s grounds were
given over to showing off Trixi
combinations this year. Two more will
be in the 2015 catalogue.
The VertiGarden system has been
powerfully promoted at BallColegrave
summer events, and memorable
outdoor walls of colour were again in
evidence. The four tier floral celebration
cake, over four metres tall and
featuring sixteen varieties, was meant

to be an unforgettable sight, and its
creators succeeded! The basal tier was
made by eight VertiGarden panels, every
other one being begonia Glowing
Embers, which thrives in the vertical.
The third tier was Begonia
semperflorens territory, with varieties in
the green-leaved Heaven series
alternating with dark-leaved Devil
varieties. Crowning all, lobelias in the
Waterfall series were the top tier plants.
Nine display gardens had been created
by artistic use of container-grown plants,
using up to fifty varieties in each. Garden
names ranged from Modern Cottage to
City Rooftop, and from Modern Man’s
(with the ornamental millet Purple
Majesty thought-provokingly placed by
the gate) to Sophisticated Ladies’, a
dreamy combination of blues and pinks.
All the gardens had colour in spades. If
there was a fair general criticism to
make, it would be that there was more
scope for foliage plants to break up the
tremendous floral display.
BallColegrave staff is very mindful
indeed of the importance of the market
for container plants. This year it hosted
product displays from companies that
produce patio planters, pots and
hanging baskets of all shapes, sizes and
colours,. Materials used ranged across
high radiation of early summer this year.
Ball Colegrave’s first showing of Trixi
combinations, three different plants
rooted together in the same plug, was
at their summer event last year. 2014

New this year were six raised perennial

FOUR OAKS TRADE SHOW - SEPTEMBER 2-3
Strong European presence at show
xhibitor numbers at Four Oaks are consistently in excess
of 450 with more than 100 new names on the list this
year. European companies are seizing the opportunity to
trade in the UK while the market is strong. Holland has by far
the largest presence at the show, and Belgium is more
prominent this year as new companies join the Flanders
Agricultural Marketing Board on a national stand.
Of the fifteen Italian exhibitors, three are new to the show Consorzio Ortovivaisti Pistoiesi, a co-operative of 24 nurseries,
Toscana Piante, a new internet based agency and Floranord

specialising in acidophil plants, is returning after a three year
absence.
The volume and diversity of plants on show has grown
substantially in the last 10 years and the visitor profile has
expanded accordingly. While annuals and perennials are very
much in evidence, the architectural and specimen plants have
brought in the landscape sector and garden designers.

unique design of the DS11
means the sowing drums
are very inexpensive when
compared to the rest of the market. Change-over is fast and
easy with only one fastener to loosen to change the drum.

Modiform .....................

World’s first 100% recycled
bedding pack.
Modiform have worked with
Coletta & Tyson, a key
supplier of plants into BQ to
replace virgin expanded
polystyrene (EPS) that ended
up in landfill.
The company wanted to
come up with something
very different to other
suppliers, so they took a
different approach.
Shaun Herdsman, UK Sales
Manager at Modiform,
started research on current
recycling systems and
evidence from end user plant
buyers to see if they were
happy with their current
white polystyrene packaging.
The groups were filmed and
it was clearly evident that
consumers didn’t like EPS at
all. Consumers told
Modiform that the standard
black plastic packaging was
certainly an option that they
liked better than EPS, but
they really wanted something
that was even more friendly
to the environment. The
consumers were delighted
when they were told about
council kerbside collections.
It was found that nearly all
councils will accept plastic
drinks bottles in their
recycling bins. Modiform
decided to offer B&Q
packaging made from 100%
recycled PET (Polyethylene
terephthalate) drinks bottles.
Consumer focus groups
were carried out to gather
Modiform’s plans to create
new packs from recycled
drinks bottles.
Modiform now knew what
material to offer Coletta &
Tyson and they worked with
them to develop the design
of the pack and a simple
design of a ‘plant punnet’
was created for commercial

growing pot range has the advantages of the standard round
and square pots all rolled into one.
The dimensions of the 1-litre container are 11 x 11 x 11 cm,
while the 14 x 14 x 14 version has a capacity of 2 litres. The
new MQE containers provide the rounded, visually harmonious
look that consumers love, but now combined with something
that really matters to the grower: the more efficient utilisation
of space offered by
square pots.
The new MQEs clearly
make much better use
of space than standard
round pots with the
same volume and
Pöppelmann has also
incorporated the
familiar, tried-andtested multi-hole cross
bottom, offering
hassle-free watering
and drainage are key
to successful
cultivation.
Rotomation ...................
Stand A16
Rotomation will be demonstrating for the first time a new
tomato grafting machine at this years show. The grafting of
tomatoes has recently made a big come back. Most if not all
of the tomatoes grown commercially in the UK are now grown
on grafted plants. There also a growing demand in the retail
sector for grafted plants. The use of grafted plants produces a
much heavier crop and plants are more resistant to disease.
The machine can be used for a whole range of suitable plants.
Rotomation will have working demonstrations throughout the
show of transplanters, potting machines, tray-fillers, boom
irrigation, seeders and spraying equipment. We look forward
to meeting you on the stand.

THE COMMERCIAL GREENHOUSE GROWER • SEPTEMBER 2014
FLORANOVA TRIALS • 27
British breeder has enviable export reputation
here are not too many
British horticultural
companies making the
most of their money in export
markets, but Norfolk-based
Floranova is now quite an old
hand at doing just that. It has
an established reputation in
many countries, especially
the USA. Now 36 years old, it
is the UK’s only company
entirely dedicated to the
breeding and seed
production of a wide
spectrum of ornamentals
grown as annuals. Floranova
has a particularly enviable
name for seed-raised
petunias, zonal pelargonium,
nicotiana and salvia.
Since 2009 its associate
company, Vegetalis, has been
working on patio vegetables,
notably tomatoes, sweet and
hot peppers and herbs.
T
Floranova and Vegetalis
breeding work is carried out
in California and India as well
as in Norfolk, and the two
companies are well
established as participants in
the annual spring pack trials
in California.
Floranova’s customers are
the seed and young plant
companies in many countries
that in turn supply the
grower or the retail customer.
The annual UK summer
trials, at their premises at
Foxley, fifteen miles west of
Norwich, are pitched
accordingly. In every year
their visitors are remarkable
for the high proportions who
come from other countries,
and who have big
purchasing power. This year

varieties, current, new and
experimental, many
competitors’ varieties were
also present for comparison
purposes.
Bossa Nova, the first seedraised Begonia boliviensis
hybrid series, new for 2014,
attracted very keen interest
both on the trial beds and in
containers. In four colours, it
will be widely available to
growers next year, though
sometimes under a different
series name chosen by the
distributor.
The stand-alone
experimental petunia variety
Wildfire Purple was covering
ground to great effect. Trialled
alongside Shockwave Deep
Purple for comparison,
Wildfire flower size was
smaller, but flowering was
more profuse and the growth
habit more prostrate. For their
intensely frilly flowers, there
was plenty of attention for the
two colours in Espresso
Frappe, a new series of
genetically compact multiflora
petunias. The grandiflora
series Espresso Grande
shares a similarly dwarf

growing habit, and on the
trials ground there was a
sixth colour to see, the new
Peach.
Looking ahead to 2015 and
beyond, there was an
experimental cosmos series,
in three colours, uniformly
more compact and earlierflowering than the wellknown Sonata series trialled
alongside. There were
experimental open-throated
bicolour antirrhinums in the
seven-colour Antiquity
series, while a formula
mixture, Reminiscent, is
already available offcatalogue.
Popstars is a new annual
phlox series with star-shaped
flowers, planned for
introduction next year. It was
seen on the trial beds in a
wide colour range.
There was plenty of
evidence on the trial beds of
Floranova’s continuing active
breeding work in French and
African marigolds. An
extensive comparative trial
featured over sixty varieties
altogether, including
comparisons from three rival
companies. Developments in
ageratum, lobularia
(alyssum), nemesia and
zinnia were displayed, too.
There are four new Vegetalis
tomato varieties this year,
bringing the total range
offered to seventeen. Habit,
fruit colour and fruit shape
are widely diverse, but all are
suitable for container
growing. Six of the varieties
have a trailing habit. Also
new this year are two
cucumbers of compact
habit, Peticue and Petipikel.
The Floranova business was
purchased by Jeff Colegrave
in 2007, and since then an
extensive investment
programme has been put in
hand. Turnover, from
Floranova and Vegetalis
together, has doubled in the
seven years since then. The
achievement is especially
remarkable in a period that
has seen the biggest
international economic
downturn since the 1920’s. ◆

Every commercial growing firm that has made a success out of itself
has done so by developing its own way of staying resilient. Some
fresh produce companies, for example, have created unique heating
and growing systems to keep their bills down. Others, meanwhile,
have organised quirky marketing campaigns to raise the profile of their
products. Eric Wall Ltd, an award-winning, family-run, tomato producer
in Barnham near Chichester, West Sussex, has remained strong by
valuing its staff members above all else. Rachel Anderson reports.
Staff loyalty and motivation
drives success
s the firm’s commercial
manager Paul Faulkner
explains, the business
goes by the maxim “people,
product, profit, reinvestment.”
This means that it puts
people first. Faulkner says:
“People - ultimately - are
what matters. The company
looks after its employees well.
We have people who have
been with us for a long time,
which means we are
preserving our expertise.”
A
The company, which
supplies Sainsbury’s directly
and Waitrose through a
marketing company, has
devised a way of ensuring
that its nursery staff remain
motivated - and several of
them have worked for the
company for some 20 years.
This level of loyalty is to be
admired in an industry that
relies heavily on seasonal
workers - many of whom
leave their employers after
just a few months. Paul says:
“On average our seasonal
staff members have been
here for seven years. They
are a mixture of Chichester
locals and Polish nationals some of whom are living here
now.” Chris Wall, who runs
the nursery, admits that “it’s a
tough job to sell growing” not least because of the
physical labour and technical
expertise you need to grow
fruit and vegetables on a
large scale. However, Chris

gives his crop workers a
sense of ownership and pride
in their “patch” by allocating
them each an area. “This
area is their responsibility
from a pest and disease point
of view” says Chris. He adds
that one person is
responsible for the overall
growing regime, but the
physical work on the plants is
down to the staff. “So you
can argue that we have
about 60 or 70 growers.”
The nursery workers at Eric
Wall Ltd are also able to work
flexitime - and they have a
couple of ways in which they
can earn bonuses on top of
their normal rate of pay. Chris
explains: “The flexitime
system suits a lot of people.
They make it work for them
and manage it how they want
to. Some members of staff,
for example, start at 5am and
finish at noon. They also have
a certain quota they have to
fulfil every week. If the work is
done and done to a certain
standard, they will get a
‘keep straight’ bonus. In line
with that we also have a
monthly yield bonus, with
different targets for different
varieties. At the end of the
year we also have a profit
share with all of the staff and the amount they receive
depends on how well the
year has gone. The profit
share system is open to

once they have been here for
12 months. So we are trying
to engage with each and
every person. They therefore
get paid more the better the
job they do, not only in terms
of quantity but crucially
quality as well.”
Chris explains that the
monthly bonus was the idea
of his father Eric - who is still
involved in the business that
he set up in 1977. He says:
“Although times have
changed the principles on
which the business was
founded have not.” Eric came
to England from Guernsey where he had been the
director of the Guernsey
Horticultural Advisory Service.
He was keen to identify a site
with the climatic benefits of
Guernsey but without the
potentially prohibitive
transport costs. Chris adds:
“My father had done a lot of
work in R&D trials. He had a
good idea of how tomatoes
could best be grown - and he
wanted to put these ideas
into practice. Strategically our

importance to the consumer.”

current location just outside
of Chichester was a great fit.”
From early on founder Eric
Wall acknowledged the need
to keep his staff motivated.
Chris says: “The flexitime was
always there - as was the
profit share at the end of the
year. But Father decided that
the end-of-year bonus was
always a long way off. So
they moved part of that profit
share from the end of the
year to a monthly basis. We
pay it during the busy
months.” Crop worker Kevin
Baker (pictured) has worked
for the firm for 25 years. He
says: “I like the system they
have here. It keeps morale
high. I like the flexitime effectively you are your own
boss. You get rewarded for
doing a great job – that’s how
it should be.” Chris adds:
“There’s pressure put back
on the management team
because the team in the crop
want us to be doing
everything absolutely right.”
During peak season Eric Wall
Ltd has some 160 members
of staff - and at the end of
the year everyone has a oneto-one review with Chris. Paul
www.actpub.co.uk
explains: “Because the
nursery staff have these set
areas, we can see how they
have performed. This helps
Chris take a view on the
individual’s profit share.”
As well as highly regarding
its staff, Eric Wall Ltd also has
great respect for its
colleagues in the tomato
production industry - as well
as for the thousands of
people who buy and eat its
produce. While many
commercial growers are
understandably too busy
running their business to
even think about their
company’s website, Eric Wall
Ltd has made a point of
creating a user-friendly
website that informs the
public about every aspect of
its business. It includes, for
example, a brief history of
Eric Wall Ltd, as well as
details of the tomato varieties
it grows and its environmental
strategy. Paul says: “We were
getting quite a few enquiries
from consumers about the
company and we didn’t have
a reference point for it so we
developed the website during
Eric Wall Ltd also helps to
communicate information to
its fellow growers by being
the home of the British
Tomato Growers’ Association
(TGA) - whose office is
located at its Barnham
nursery. Paul, who is the
TGA’s treasurer, says: “The
TGA acts as a focal point for
the industry, dealing with
media as well as consumer
queries. It is also very active
in research and development.
When the pest tuta absoluta
came along, for example, the
TGA coordinated the
industry’s campaign to
control the destructive pest
and spread best practice.”
There is a huge amount of
work that goes on and the
engagement with the industry
is fantastic.” Up until two
years ago, the business which last year (2013) won
the Sainsbury’s Produce
Quality Supplier Award - was
able to grow its tomatoes
without the use of artificial
pesticides. “And then [the
pest] tuta absoluta arrived,”
says Chris. “But we were
lucky to get it later on after
research had taken place into
ways to better to control the
pest. Now we are a bit more
confident that we can control
it using beneficial insects and
so for the last year we have
increased our macrolophus

business is nature.”
Another occasion in which
the firm was in the lap of the
gods was when it was ten
years old. Then, its nursery
was devastated by the UK’s
infamous 1987 hurricane which blew out 80% of the
company’s glass. This was
rebuilt and the nursery, which
grows its tomato plants in
rock wool supplied by
Grodan, has steadily grown in
size over the years and is
now some 13 hectares large.
The newest addition has
been some 2.4 hectares of
glass that was built in 2011
by Amerlaan.
Eric Wall Ltd’s glasshouses
are heated using gas-fired
hot water boilers that are
controlled by a computer
system supplied by Dutch
specialists Hoogendoorn. The
system allows the
glasshouses to have their
own “weather station” that
monitors their environments
round the clock. The

These two water collection

allowed the company to more
than halve its borehole

to develop part of its nursery

computer-controlled.
Mindful of its nursery’s
environmental impact, Eric
Wall Ltd has successfully
reduced its energy inputs by
29 per cent during the past
decade. It has achieved this
by installing thermal screens,
supplied by East Yorkshirebased CMW Horticulture, into
its glasshouses. The same
company also worked with
the producer to introduce a
state-of-the-art irrigation
system into its newest
glasshouse. This system
ensures that run-off water is
not wasted as any excess
water is collected, sterilised
and then reused.
Rain water is also collected
Paul points out that, as part
of its “people, product, profit
and reinvestment” ethos,
there has been significant
investment in the company
every year. The grower has
been able to reinvest in the
business despite the fact that
it has missed out on funding
from Europe that has been
secured by some of its
competitors. Chris explains:
“We were part of a Producer
Organisation but, because of
the complexity of the
legislation, it just became too
difficult.” In the last eight
years, however, Eric Wall Ltd
has successfully built three
new blocks of glass and a
new packhouse. Paul adds:
“There’s been a change in
our product mix and so the
new packhouse with it’s
different packing lines was
really a reflection of this and
of course the increase in our

production area.” The nursery
has around 53km of plant
rows. The tomato plants are
harvested every other day half the nursery one day and
the other half the following
day. The young plants are
brought into the glasshouse
in December for harvesting in
early March. The harvesting
continues through to the end
of October.
Eric Wall Ltd, as part of its
insistence on producing the
best possible products,
currently trials some 50 new
varieties to see if any of them
offer a better flavour than
those tomatoes in its current
range. Paul explains: “The
varieties come from seed
houses and we trial them
here to identify gaps in the
market and of course to see
how they perform
agronomically.” Eric Wall Ltd
produces six different types
of tomatoes - including a new
variety, Sunshine, whose
seeds are supplied by Rijk
Zwaan. Commercially the
new variety is known as Ruby
Jewel. Other seed suppliers
used by the producer include
De Ruiter and Enza Zaden.
Paul says: “We grew four
rows of it last year (2013) as
a trial and we now (2014)
have 7,500 square metres of
it. We are trying to upgrade

GM flies to
combat pests
Releasing genetically
engineered fruit flies into the
wild could prove to be a
cheap, effective and
environmentally friendly way
of pest control according to
scientists at the University of
East Anglia and Oxford Insect
Technologies (Oxitec).
The research reveals how
the release of genetically
engineered male flies could
be used as an effective
population suppression
method – saving crops
around the world.
The Mediterranean fruit fly is
a serious agricultural pest
which causes extensive
damage to crops. It is
currently controlled by a
combination of insecticides,
baited traps, biological
control and releasing
sterilised insects to produce
non-viable matings, known as
the Sterile Insect Technique
(SIT).
Researchers simulated a wild
environment within
greenhouses in Crete and
studied the impact of
releasing Oxitec flies.
The Oxitec method works by
introducing a female-specific
gene into the insects that
interrupts development
before females reach a
reproductive stage. The next
stage of the research will be
to gain approval for openfield studies.
Populations of healthy males
and females can be
produced in controlled
environments by the addition
of a chemical repressor. If the
chemical repressor is absent
in the genetically engineered
flies’ diet, only males survive.
The surviving males are
released, mate with local wild
pest females and pass the
female specific self-limiting
trait onto the progeny
resulting in no viable female

offspring.

Research Diary by David Pennell
Hanging basket effect on Peppers
Greenhouse Light
affected by
Hanging baskets are often grown above the bench or floor
space to maximize production. These hanging baskets
shade
impact the light environment delivered to the crop
underneath. Experiments in the US by researchers at
Clemson University and University of Tennessee, set out to
quantify the effect of hanging basket density, container
content and container colour (white vs. green) on
photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) transmission and red (R)
and far-red (FR) light measurements at the greenhouse floor
under the hanging basket treatments (HortTechnology).
Interception of PPF was calculated as a proportion of the
treatment with no hanging baskets. Interception of PPF
increased as hanging basket density increased, from 5.3%
interception at 0.21 containers/yard2 to 25.5% interception
at 2.57 containers/yard2.
Green containers intercepted 36.1% more radiation than
the white containers. Presence of plants in the containers
resulted in 62.3% greater PPF interception than containers
without plants. R:FR was reduced from 1.15 measured
under hanging basket treatments without plants to 1.07

Irrigation and nitrogen in
potted mum production
Sub-irrigation is being
adopted as an
environmentally friendly
strategy for managing the
nutrition of potted
greenhouse plants. Work at
University of Guelph,
Ontario, Canada investigated
two strategies for enhancing
the remobilization of nitrogen
during the development of
the inflorescence in subirrigated potted
chrysanthemum in an
attempt to improve nitrogen
use efficiency (Canadian
Journal of Plant Science).
They first replaced a portion
of the nitrate in the nutrient
solution with ammonium
decreased the nitrate
content, especially in the
stem plus petioles, and
increased the reduced N
content early in the growth
cycle, but did not improve N
use efficiency. The second
used a lower N supply (200
vs. 400 mg total N per pot
delivered over 3 and 5 wk,
respectively), either as nitrate
or ammonium nitrate,
eliminated nitrate
accumulation prior to
inflorescence development,
thereby improving N use
efficiency. Inflorescence
quality was unaffected;
however, at the lower N level
there was some evidence of
chlorosis on the oldest
leaves. There may be
potential to reduce the N
supply in commercial
greenhouses provided an

THE COMMERCIAL GREENHOUSE GROWER • SEPTEMBER 2014
High temperatures can be
detrimental to bell pepper,
resulting in reduced fruit
yield and increased
incidences of fruit disorders
such as sunscald and
blossom-end rot. Shade
nets are used to modify the
crop microenvironment to
improve plant growth and
yield. Scientists at University
of Georgia evaluated effects
of shade level on fruit yield,
quality, and postharvest
attributes and the incidence
of Phytophthora blight in bell
pepper using different
varieties, Heritage, Camelot,
Lafayette, Sirius, and Stiletto
(HortScience). Pepper plants
were grown under shade
levels of 0% (unshaded),
30%, 47%, 63%, and 80%.
Shade level affected fruit
yield, quality, postharvest
attributes, and incidence of
Phytophthora blight in
plants. Total marketable fruit
yield increased with
increasing shade level to a
maximum at 35% shade and
then decreased with further
increments in shade level.
Relative to unshaded plants,
marketable yields were
improved by 119% (2008)
and 43% (2009 and 2010) at
35% shade level. Grade 2
and cull (sunscald) fruit
number declined with
increasing shade level.
‘Camelot’ produced among
the greatest number and
yield of marketable fruit;
‘Sirius’ had the heaviest fruit
and greatest number of
culls. Fruit nitrogen,
phosphorus, and potassium
concentrations increased
and aluminum, molybdenum
and nickel decreased with
increasing shade level.
‘Lafayette’ had the highest
fruit concentration of
nitrogen, calcium, sulphur,
manganese and zinc. Fruit
soluble solids and percent of
fruit dry weight decreased
with increasing shade level;
fruit water loss rate and
bacterial soft rot incidence
were unaffected. Incidences
of Phytophthora blight in
plants and fruit sunscald
decreased with shade level.
Beneficial effects of shading
were associated with a
reduction in irradiation, air
temperature, and soil
temperature under shaded
conditions resulting in
amelioration of heat stress in
the plants. Optimal shade
level for maximal fruit yield
was that which maximized
the cooling effect resulting
from reduction of infrared
radiation and minimized the
decrease in net
photosynthesis resulting
from reduction in
photosynthetically active
