Letter From
The Mayor
Dear Neighbors
U
Mayor

nbelievably, this will be arriving
in your mailboxes as school is
beginning, which means our summer
is almost over (insert sad face here). It
also means that our Community’s annual
celebration is right around the corner!! You
will find information about this year’s Home
Day in this issue of our magazine including
a great entertainment line-up!
Our Service Department workers and
contractors have been busy completing
numerous road repair and replacement
projects, gas lines, sidewalks and sewers as
well. All of these are extremely important
to maintain an excellent infrastructure. As
always, there are more projects needing
attention than the funds available, but our
Council deploys our resources as creatively
as possible to assure we do as much as we
can.
The new Hyatt Place hotel ribbon
cutting was June 28th and the new Capital
Grille’s ribbon cutting was July 5th - what
wonderful additions to our community that
have been very well received by residents
and visitors alike! We were fortunate to
have the West Virginia delegation, along
with CNN, staying at the Hyatt Place hotel
for the RNC and the compliments of the
hotel, of our Police, who were on site
assuring their security and of our great City
were endless!
By our next issue, I hope to be
announcing some new “re-developments.”
Great things continue to be happening in
Lyndhurst!!
I have enjoyed invitations to many
neighborhood block parties this summer
and am grateful for the opportunity to
interact with our residents in a social
setting in their own neighborhoods. I
wish more streets would consider having
these wonderful events as they foster
tremendous relationships, familiarity and
enhance our understanding of one another.
Plus, they are FUN!
I encourage all our residents to attend
our Council Coffee on Saturday, October
1st from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. In addition to
refreshments and an opportunity to meet
and interact with our Councilmen and me,
there is a City Expo where all of our City
Departments will have helpful information.
Representatives from our SEL Schools,
Cleveland Water and the Sewer District
are planned to be there as well. It is a very
informative event!
I hope that you have all had an enjoyable
summer and have made time for family,
fun, neighbors and relaxation. I look
forward to seeing you at Home Day!!
Best Regards,
Patrick A. Ward
Mayor

PS: I am a positive person and try to
find something good about everything
but recent events give me pause. My one
thought is that when we fail to respect
one another, when we fail to see what
is great about our differences and when
we paint groups of people with a broad
brush, we all lose. Our world is a complex,
troubled place, and events unfold before
our eyes, which raises opportunity for
snap judgements based upon snippets of
information which oftentimes are not a true
picture. Please respect your neighbors and
others. We can all make a difference!

Fire Department
Fire Explorers Post 1349
F
ire Explorer Post 1349 is an
organization for young men
and women, ages 14-21 years
old, who are interested in pursuing
a career in the fire and EMS fields.
Post 1349 is a group effort through
the fire departments of South Euclid,
Mayfield Heights, and Lyndhurst.
The program advisors are members
of the sponsoring Fire Departments.
The Explorer program is insured
and sponsored by the Boy Scouts of
America.
Meetings are held the second and
fourth Wednesday of each month
with the location rotating through the
sponsoring fire departments. Topics
include basic things like equipment
operation and the history of the fire
service to hose line advancement and
vehicle extrication. Upon occasion,
we have been granted permission to
train in houses that were being torn
down. This allowed more hands-on
training such as emergency bailouts,
breaching walls, and roof ventilation.
Explorer members who have met
a minimum number of meetings
and passed an equipment location
check list are granted permission to
ride along with the fire department
on emergency calls, however the
Explorer is never permitted in the
hazardous zone.
Several of our Explorers, after
completing their state required
training, have gone on to work for
area fire departments. They have all
6LOYHU5HVWRUDWLRQ(YHQW
SAVE 20%
stated that the additional training
they received through the Explorer
Program has helped them in both the
Fire Academy and at the department
they are working for. Most of them,
even with their commitment to the
department they are employed by,
still make time to attend meetings
and help out the new members.
I have been very privileged to be a
part of a hard-working and dedicated
team of advisors and to work with
such great young men and women
of Post 1349. As a 15-year veteran
of the Lyndhurst Fire Department
and a former Fire Explorer myself, I
am excited to share in the pride of
seeing them realize their dreams of
becoming a firefighter.

Schools &
Education
Looking Back with Pride While Planning
for Success for the Next School Year
espite the summer months when
most students and families are
enjoying the warm temperatures and
time away from school, the South Euclid
Lyndhurst administrative staff continues
to work to ensure a productive start to the
next school year. Before we look forward,
a word of congratulations to the departing
Class of 2016. Combined, their honors and
accolades are significant. Millions of dollars
of scholarships and grants have been earned,
and the students of the graduating Class
of 2016 should be proud. The South Euclid
Lyndhurst Schools expresses its warmest
wishes for success in the future.
On another point of academic
achievement, the South Euclid Lyndhurst
Schools were recently awarded the state’s
first annual Momentum Award. This award
was presented to the district on behalf of
the Ohio Board of Education and has been
given to the SEL Schools for their strong
performance on the 2014-2015 State Report
Card. Specifically, the SEL Schools earned
A’s in every Value-Added metric, placing it
among the elite school districts in the state
according to the State Board of Education
that ensured its pupils received a year’s
worth of academic growth in reading and
mathematics. The Momentum Award is
designed to recognize school districts that
support academic growth of students from
every background or learning ability. From
the perspective of the President of the Ohio
Board of Education, the SEL Schools is
“keeping the learning momentum high.”
Awards such as this one cannot be earned
alone. Congratulations to the students,
teachers and parents of the SEL Schools for
earning this year’s Momentum Award and for
operating each of our schools at a level that
meets students precisely where they need
intervention or enrichment and delivering a
quality education. This is certainly a strong
way to finish the academic year.
We ride this wave of momentum into
the 2016-2017 school year, and plan to
continue the success for students from both
an academic and co-curricular standpoint.
Communications continues to be a top

priority for the South Euclid Lyndhurst
Schools. You recently received the 4th
edition of this year’s “Arc Pride” newsletter,
which is a publication of our school district
designed to keep the community informed
about the most important topics in our
district. The community can always view
past editions online by visiting www.sel.
k12.oh.us. In addition, be sure to visit the
website so that you can sign up for regularly
sent emails from me to stay posted on
relevant updates from the district. Entitled
our “Key Communicators” email, last year
a total of more than 12 emails were sent to
community members, elected officials and
others with new and exciting information.
Once again, visit the website to sign up for
these important updates. The SEL Schools
began a very meaningful outreach to our
senior citizens this past school year where
students visited both the Lyndhurst and
South Euclid Senior Centers to spend
time with our community’s golden agers.
Students interviewed senior citizens, played
card games and spoke with them about
their respective histories. The SEL Schools
thanks the Community Partnership on
Aging for their help in the process, and for
the continued work it will do together in the
future. Look for new partnerships formalizing
in the near future with our local business
community.
In previewing the 2016-2017 School Year,
the community can also expect a heightened
emphasis on technology and training
our youngest students with 21st Century
Skills. The final year of the SEL Schools’
major technology upgrade will be nearing
completion, and once so, the entire district
will be wired for innovation, technology
and success. This substantial project was
executed under the direction of the SEL
Schools’ technology team, and they are to
be commended for their diligence, precision
and hard work. Please enjoy the rest of your
summer. Keep in mind that the first day of
school is Wednesday, August 17, 2016. Thank
you for your continued support of the SEL
Schools, and GO ARCS!

History
The Lyndhurst Historian’s Tales
This northwest facing aerial view at Mayfield and Brainard roads was taken on September 16, 1951. The Lyndhurst Golf Course and the original St. Clare
Church share the bottom of the photograph. Harry Brainard’s house, later Wells-Kloss Funeral Home, is to the left. The top left corner is where Ken Cole’s
Mayfair Air Service was located, later to become the site of Chester C. Bolton Elementary School.
H
i folks! As the Lyndhurst
historian for the last 35 years
or so, one of my favorite tales
is of Ken Cole’s airfield. Located at
the northwest corner properties of
Ford and Mayfield roads, it was in
operation from 1927-1933.
Ken Cole ran his commercial
business, Mayfair Air Service, from
the hanger at the present intersection
of Sheldon and Haverston roads.
Among his regulars were three guys
nicknamed “The Three Flying Fools;”
Art Siebold, Fred Kinstler and Mike
12
Isabella. They were a familiar sight in
Lyndhurst’s skies and remembered for
using Ken Coles’ American Eagle OX-5
biplane for “bombing missions” in
which they dropped flour sack bombs
into tires strategically placed on the
ground. Their showering of treats and
prizes at Lyndhurst Home Day was an
annual event and fondly remembered
by many old timers.
But there was high drama too. On
August 21,1932, Ken was in the air
with a student, when they noticed
people on the ground shouting up to
lyndhurst-oh.com | facebook.com/CityOfLyndhurstOhio
them. Concerned, he leaned out of
his cockpit and saw his left landing
wheel dangling loose on its axle.
“Were in for it” Cole shouted to his
student, “unless I can fix that wheel
before we land.”
Flying low, Ken shouted to those on
the ground to send him up a length of
rope, believing he could tie the wheel
back into place. Al Barber, who also
owned a plane hangered there, went
up with his pilot Mike Isabella and
dropped the 50 feet of rope to him.
A crowd of 5000 had gathered
History
and watched as Ken crept out on
the wing and tried to fix the wheel.
A very tense half-hour went by
and he finally gave up as darkness
approached. Out of options and
hoping for a soft landing, it was,
instead, a hard landing and the wheel
broke, tipping the plane on its side
causing extensive damage. He and
his student, Jack McKain, crawled out
from the wreckage and walked away,
scratched, bruised and very lucky to
be alive.
However, it was the second crash in
1933 that made Ken Cole reconsider
his options. Mike Isabella, while
taking off, clipped the trees and
crashed into the empty fields east
of Ford road. He also walked away
from a serious crash but the damage
to both planes was severe and
expensive, which brought about the
end of Mayfair Air Service.
Ken Cole closed the doors to
one of Lyndhurst’s most colorful
periods and went west, joining
the fledgling aircraft industry in
California. Loneliness filled the skies
of Lyndhurst now as the end of an era
had arrived.
Look for more of these stories in
the next Lyndhurst Life magazine, as
the 100th anniversary of Lyndhurst
approaches in 2017. I will be at
Lyndhurst Home Day to tell my tales
and share my pictures with all. See
you in the park!

nights per week and opening for national acts such as Rush, Joe Walsh, Tommy
James, Artful Dodger, Cheech & Chong and Rare Earth back in the 1970’s. East
Wind reunited with its original band members back in September, 2009 with a

Did you know that
falls by older adults are
among the leading causes
of death and injury?
In Ohio, an older adult
falls, on average, every
2 minutes, resulting in
one hospitalization every
hour and 3 deaths per day.
According to the Ohio
Department of Health, the
total cost of falls (in Ohio)
is estimated to be $1.8
million/day or $646 million
annually.
The good news is that
falls are not a normal
part of the aging process!
Falls can easily be
prevented through several
interventions, including
minor home modification.

The Community
Partnership on Aging Safe
at Home Program aims
to reduce falls among
the older adults in the
cities it serves: Lyndhurst,
South Euclid, Highland
Heights, Mayfield Heights
and Mayfield Village. The
program is the first of its
kind in this area, and since
program inception in 2010,
CPA has installed more
than 50 shower/bath grab
bars or stair handrails,
and completed as many
home environmental
assessments, all at little
to no cost to residents.
The goal of the program
is to reduce falls and to
also help older adults
maintain independence in
their home for as long as
possible.
On Saturday, November
5, the Lyndhurst Fire
Department and the fire
departments of the other
CPA-service area will
prepare their best chili
in hopes of winning the
title, “Best 5 City Chili”! In
addition to chili samples,
attendees can expect
pizza, salad, cornbread
and dessert with their
admission, as well as
many other surprises.
Tickets for the event will
be available in September.
For information about the
event, please call Therese
at CPA at 216-291-3902

Lyndhurst Dads’ Club at 50!!
T
he Lyndhurst Dads’ Club,
founded in 1966, is celebrating
50 years in the best way it
knows how; by promoting an
excellent baseball program for the
youth of our Community! In 50
years over 40,000 local youth have
participated in its programs playing
on over 3,100 teams at over 25,000
games! The Club has hosted over
40 tournaments that have brought
teams from across northeast
Ohio to the wonderful facilities
in Lyndhurst. This organization,
directed by volunteers, began its
50th year celebrations at the annual
Dads’ Club Parade on May 15th. A
plaque commemorating the event
was installed at Brainard Park.
Congratulations to our Lyndhurst
Dads’ Club!

Seasons of Change!
LEAVES
Our City Service Department will be vacuuming piles of leaves from the tree lawns as we do every
year. Leaf pick-up will be on an AS-NEEDED basis.
All leaves that are collected from tree lawns will be recycled, composted and made into leaf humus or other product.
It is extremely important that all leaves are piled on your tree lawn for vacuum pick-up. Please DO NOT pile leaves in
the street or gutter as this is a safety hazard and these leaves may not be picked up.
PILED LEAVES MIXED WITH BRANCHES OR OTHER MATERIALS WILL NOT BE PICKED UP!
At the end of the leaf season, should you have small quantities of leaves for pick-up, please place them in paper yard
waste bags or your designated yard waste container for pick-up on your regular collection day.
We appreciate your assistance in assuring a successful leaf collection program and the responsible recycling of as
much or our yard waste as possible.
SNOW PLOWING
Winter is not too far away and you may soon be contacted by snow plow
contractors regarding the plowing of your driveway this winter. The City requires all commercial snow plow operators
register with the City and obtain a permit. This is for your protection as we assure the vehicles are properly registered,
properly insured and are equipped with the necessary emergency equipment.
While the City cannot assure the performance of your contracted operator, if they are registered with the City, you
know they are aware of the City’s expectations!
Please remember that it is illegal to deposit snow in the street or block public sidewalks when plowing, shoveling or
snow blowing your driveway. Violators may be prosecuted.
Please be sure your Snow Plow contractor is properly registered!

Lyndhurst Homes of Distinction
S
ome of the best ideas are born from conversations…
A few years ago a resident called her Councilman to
discuss a few topics. She mentioned the City sending
notices for grass cutting and other home conditions which,
she conceded, is needed. She then asked why the City did
not do anything to recognize those residents who do an
excellent job of maintaining their properties as that would
be a “positive incentive” and an inspiration to others.
22
From that conversation “Properties of Distinction” was
born. In each of the three summer months four homes
are recommended to City Council, by the City Building
Department, for recognition. The homeowner receives a
certificate and a sign to place in front of their home. We
are pleased to share with all of you the Class of 2016,
Lyndhurst Properties of Distinction! Congratulations to
these neighbors!!

information relative to the
deer population in the City.
The link to the survey and
instructions have been sent
out electronically via the
City’s E-news, posted on
the City’s webpage
(www.lyndhurst-oh.com)
and on Facebook. The City
will also be publishing
details in its magazine next
month.
“Our goal is to get
as many residents
participating in all areas of
our City in order to map
our deer population and
behaviors. Our survey is
modeled after surveys
conducted in Mentor and
Shaker Heights which were
very successful in assisting
City leaders developing
policies.” Ward said.
The survey will be
limited to one response
per household and
residents must email in to
[email protected] to receive a PIN
number and instructions.
