The BMH Foundation Inc., a tax exempt 509(a)(3) supporting organization, shall operate for
the benefit of Ball Memorial Hospital and related organizations to receive contributions, hold
and manage assets and make distributions to promote excellence in wellness and healthcare
services for the people of East Central Indiana.

The BMH Foundation Inc., will be a resource to Ball Memorial Hospital, to enable
it to expand with excellence its provision of patient care, education, research,

As we reflect on accomplishments for 2009, we realize that the passion of our donors enable the
doctors, nurses, employees and other medical professionals at Ball Memorial Hospital to fulfill
their purpose of providing preeminent healthcare for the people in East Central Indiana.
During the past year, the Foundation has been busy… working to support Ball Memorial Hospital
and its affiliates, including Blackford Community Hospital, through funding of important programs
and services including Graduate Medical Education; Women and Children’s Services; Pediatric
Rehabilitation; Cancer; Cardiology; Scholarships; and Lectureships… just to name a few. While
the Foundation’s primary role is to support Ball Memorial Hospital, we also have the passion to
support quality healthcare in our community.
Your continued support of the Foundation… a passionate Foundation with a purpose of supporting
Ball Memorial Hospital and quality community-based healthcare… is critical. Ball Memorial Hospital
is an incredible community asset. We recognize its importance to the health needs of those living and
working in East Central Indiana and the economic impact it has on our community.

BMH Foundation
Annual Campaign Exceeds Goal
The Muncie community has once again shown their support for Ball Memorial Hospital which resulted
in a successful BMH Foundation Annual Campaign. The focus of the 2009 campaign was on Women and
Children’s services at BMH.
A goal of $225,000 was set last fall for the 2009 BMH Foundation Annual Campaign. At the conclusion
of the campaign, 2009 Campaign Chair, Michael Galliher, announced the campaign had raised more than
$295,000.
“We owe the success of this year’s campaign to all of the dedicated leaders and volunteers that were involved,” Galliher said. “Even during the holiday season volunteers found time to help make a difference.”
Galliher made the announcement at an afternoon event in February attended by campaign volunteers
and supporters of the BMH Foundation from throughout the community.
“They may forget what you said,
but they will never forget how you
made them feel .”
“The results of this campaign are another example of the commitment the Muncie community has for local
healthcare,” said Tricia Stanley, President, BMH Foundation. “I am so thankful for everyone’s time and dedication that they put in to make this successful campaign possible. Now our goal is to ensure that the results of
this campaign will make a vital impact at BMH and for the health of the communities BMH serves.”
In addition to Michael Galliher serving as Campaign Chair, the BMH Foundation also benefited from
the support of Dr. David and Mrs. Marcia Gobble, Co-Vice Chairs. In addition, physician leaders, Dr. Jeff
Bird, Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for BMH, Dr. Erin Vinson, American Health Network, and
Dr. Dan Lopiccolo, Voss Center for Women, provided leadership from the medical community.
The annual campaign benefited from two lead gifts from Ball Corporation and from Old National Bank, and
a special gift from Sherry Laboratories all in honor of John and Janice Fisher and for the benefit of Women and
Children’s services at Ball Memorial Hospital.

“The Shafer family has been a strong supporter of Ball Memorial Hospital for many years,” said Tricia
Stanley, President, BMH Foundation. “We are very grateful that the Sculpture will be a permanent
fixture inside BMH to serve as a reminder of just how important their support is to local healthcare.”
Artist Steve Clark, a Yorktown resident, created the Shafer sculpture, which depicts a family as it
departs the hospital.
“We are thrilled that this significant public sculpture is now in place for the entire community to enjoy,” said Terry Walker, President, with the Hamer D. and Phyllis C. Shafer Foundation Charitable
Trust. “Hamer Shafer was a business and civic leader who consistently sought to celebrate our
community’s greatest asset, our people. We are all very fortunate to benefit from the impact the
Shafer family continues to make.”

GIVING
The Largest Single Gift in the
Foundation’s History…
a Testament to the Power of Planned Giving
A $2 million gift from the estate of late-Cardinal Health System Board Chairman, John W. Fisher, now
holds the distinction of being the largest gift from a single donor. $1 million of the gift is restricted for
medical education purposes, and $1 million for the area of greatest need.
“Mr. Fisher was an advocate for the hospital, and spent over 50 years of time and talent here,” said Kelly Stanley, BMH Foundation Board Chairman. “This significant gift punctuates the importance of the Fisher family
to BMH, and that importance will continue to be felt locally for generations.”
The portion of the Fisher bequest earmarked for
medical education, will help ensure BMH remains
a state leader in that area.
The hospital’s residency program is the largest in Indiana outside of Indianapolis. It is home
to four residencies (family medicine, internal
medicine, transitional, pathology), as well as a
research department. In 2009, 62 residents
participated in the program. More than 30
percent of BMH’s clinical staff received training
through one of the hospital’s residencies.
Clinics staffed by family medicine and internal
medicine residents saw more than 25,000
patient visits last year.

GREENROOF
Indiana’s Largest Green Roof
installed at BMH

The largest green roof in the state of Indiana now resides atop the new South Tower at Ball Memorial Hospital.
“This is a first green roof of its kind in Delaware County,” said Richard Shelton, Senior Administrative Director of
Engineering. “To be a part of its many purposes and benefits is quite an opportunity.”
The green roof contains more than 23,000 square feet of vegetation making it the largest green roof in
Indiana. Generous gifts from the American Electric Power Foundation, Ball Brothers Foundation and the
Muncie Sanitary District made this project a reality. It is estimated that the green roof will cut the South
Tower’s heating and cooling costs by 10 to 15 percent.
Added benefits from the green roof include reduced storm water run-off, reduced energy costs, improved
air quality as well as extended service life of the roof.
“The completion of the green roof kicked off a ‘go green’ effort at Ball Memorial Hospital and we are very
proud of that” said Shelton.

Incubator and i-STAT Analyzer
Support of the BMH Foundation continued to make a difference in the lives of our community’s tiniest
patients. In 2009, funds from the BMH Foundation were used to purchase a new transport incubator for
newborns and an i-STAT analyzer for use in the Women and Children’s departments at BMH.
“The Women and Children’s staff is grateful for the role the Foundation had in providing the latest technology
to our areas,” said Alexis Neal, Senior Administrative Director of Women and Children’s Services . “We see the
impact of gifts to the BMH Foundation every single day.”
The new transport incubator is used when babies must be moved from the Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit (NICU) to another area of the floor or in some cases down to the Radiology department. The incubator
provides a safe and controlled environment in which the precious cargo can be transported.
“The incubator certainly met a critical need in providing our patients with the best care possible,” said Neal.
The i-STAT analyzer is an instrument that measures oxygen, carbon dioxide and the pH levels in the blood. In
the past, blood was drawn and sent down to the lab, as nurses and physicians waited for results on average of
30 minutes. With the i-STAT analyzer on the floor, those same results can be obtained by the clinicians within
minutes.
“Getting results in minutes versus a half hour, allows us to make decisions and initiate patient care plans at
an accelerated pace which benefits the patient greatly,” Donna Wilcox, Nurse Manager of the NICU, said.
“In the first month alone we utilized the new analyzer on 100 blood samples. This is a significant impact in
providing safe, quality care.”
The Foundation is proud to meet the needs of Women and Children’s Services at BMH. Because of generous
donors, we were able to make a significant impact by purchasing equipment that will continue to serve a vital
purpose for years to come.

Pediatric Rehab Scholarships
In 2009, the BMH Foundation awarded $51,000 in scholarships to local children in need of pediatric rehabilitation services. Scholarships are awarded to patients who otherwise would have to go without necessary
treatment because of their families’ financial situations.
BMH Pediatric Rehabilitation is one of the only facilities of its kind in East Central Indiana serving patients from
Blackford, Delaware, Grant, Henry, Madison, Jay and Randolph counties.
Season of Hope
Springtime is traditionally the season of new life and renewal. With that in mind, members of the Clarian Ball
Hospice team are eagerly anticipating the 2010 Season of Hope program, which gives donors and their
families the opportunity to honor and remember loved ones, and/or celebrate the birth of a child.
The Season of Hope program will be held at 4p.m., Sunday, April 25 in front of The Cancer Center at BMH.
For every $15 donation, a loved one’s name will be displayed on the registry at Ball Memorial Hospital.
In appreciation of your contribution, donors will receive a special remembrance commemorating that
individual. For every donation of $200 or greater, a tree will be planted on a BMH property in honor
of a loved one.
For a loved one’s name to be listed on the registry at the time of our Season of Hope ceremony, donations
must be received by April 15, 2010. Donations received after that time will be posted as soon as possible.

BMH Foundation Working With BMH
Auxiliary Gift Shop
The BMH Auxiliary has been a long time supporter of not only BMH but also the BMH
Foundation through donations and volunteer support. In 2009, the BMH Foundation assumed
management responsibilities for the employees of the BMH Auxiliary Gift Shop as well as
administrative support for the Auxiliary Board.
The BMH Auxiliary Gift Shop will continue to be an Auxiliary-operated fundraising entity,
with advisory support and involvement from the Auxiliary President, Auxiliary Board, and
Gift Shop Advisory Committee.
“I am delighted to share some of the BMH Foundation’s talents to help manage the gift
shop employees and provide administrative support to the Auxiliary. The Foundation and
the Auxiliary should compliment one another for fundraising and community relations”
said Tricia Stanley, President, The BMH Foundation, Inc.

BMH Pediatric Rehabilitation Muncie
Triathlon/Duathlon June 12

The BMH Foundation is a sponsor for Muncie Multi-Sport’s June 12, triathlon/duathlon event. The
event will be held at Prairie Creek Reservoir with an Olympic distance triathlon, a sprint triathlon, a
sprint duathlon, an Aqua-Bike and a 5k run/walk and 10k run.
At the request of Muncie Multi-Sport, a local company owned by Steven and Tammy Tomboni,
proceeds from the BMH Foundation Muncie Triathlon/Duathlon will support BMH Pediatric Rehabilitation.
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with the BMH Foundation on this year’s event,” said Steve Tomboni,
CEO, Muncie Multi-Sport. “We see a lot of opportunities to get the BMH employees involved in the
event and to be able to benefit a cause as worthy as the Pediatric Rehabilitation program is a true
privilege.”

Norfleet Open Scheduled for
September 12
The 28th annual Norfleet Open Bill Shockley Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for 8 a.m.,
Sunday, September 12 at Tri County Golf Club in Middletown.
The entry fee is $50.00 per person with all proceeds benefiting The Cancer Center at Ball Memorial
Hospital. The annual golf outing, held in memory of Bill Shockley, has raised more than $230,000
since its inception. Partnership with The Cancer Center at BMH and the BMH Foundation ensure that
proceeds from the event fully benefit local cancer patients.
