Positive changes have been observed in transportation as well. Despite the difficult economic situation, when compared to other Baltic States, the transportation volumes were growing at a consistent pace: 11.5 million tonnes of freight were carried in the first quarter of 2016, i.e. around 2.5 per cent more than same time last year. The volumes of oil and oil product traffic were also increasing. We expect that 2016, which has started successfully, will help AB “Lietuvos geležinkeliai” fulfil new expectations and overcome the awaiting challenges successfully. 5 << TO CONTENTS COOPERATION IN TRANSPORTATION RUSSIA FINLAND SWEDEN ŠEŠTOKAI (LT) SCHWARZHEIDE (DE) GERMANY POLAND SEMIGLAVY (KZ)/ OZINKI (RU) GUDAGOJIS (BY) / KENA (LT) ZLYNKA (RU) / ZAKOPYTJE (BY) BELARUS STARA WIES k. / KUTNA (PL) KAZACHSTAN DOSTYK GEORGIA KORLA TURKEY CHINA With the help of AB “Lietuvos geležinkeliai”, the first freight with chemicals travelling from China to Europe has reached its destination successfully. Thirty 20 foot containers filled with butanediol, a raw material for chemical industry, transited Lithuania on a container train operated by Hupac Intermodal SA. “LG Ekspedicija” took over of the freight operations in Belarus and ensured that it was successfully delivered to Kena Railway Station. From there, the freight left for Šeštokai where it was transshipped onto wagons travelling on a European track gauge via which it reached a chemical plant in Germany. 6 In the view of Stasys Dailydka, the CEO of AB “Lietuvos geležinkeliai”, the project is an example of responsible preparations and successful negotiations with the partners. This cooperation will help the partners ensure speedy and efficient transportation and it will have direct financial benefits to Lithuania and increase the volumes of freight bound for China– Europe. It is planned to transport around 12 thousand tonnes of such freight this year. These volumes should increase in the future. It is forecasted that 2 trains will run the China-Europe route on a monthly basis. QUICKER DATA EXCHANGE How can the information on freight travelling via Klaipėda be exchanged quicker and the servicing thereof made speedier? The Klaipėda State Seaport Authority found a new solution five years ago. It launched the Freight and Goods Information System (KIPIS). Its main objective is to process and share information on the freight carried via the port of Klaipėda with all members of this logistics chain. The system allowed to replace around 30 paper documents regarding the formalisation of freight and to receive the required information in a convenient manner via an online interface in any location within the country. The documents required for the customs as well as other state authorities are accessible on the system. It is possible to share information in the course of the procedures for temporary storage, import, export and transit of the goods or placing and fulfilling orders for handling works. The system is currently used by over 360 companies and state authorities that operate at the port. They include freight forwarding and shipping agency companies, sea handling companies, the Customs of the Republic of Lithuania, the Border and Transport State Veterinary Service, the State Plant Protection Service, Klaipėda Centre for Public Health, the Coast Guard Squad, etc. The e-KROVINYS system used by AB “Lietuvos geležinkeliai”, on which all documents accompanying the carriage of freight on the Lithuanian railways are processed and the record-keeping supervision is undertaken, also uses the interface of automatic data exchange on KIPIS. The port of Klaipėda is considered to be one of the strongest and the most important transport links where maritime and land highways between Eastern regions of Eurasia and the West interlink. Most of the freight is transported to the seaport by rail. Thus, the KIPIS helps the freight travelling via Klaipėda be handled to a high-quality standard. 7 << TO CONTENTS DESTINATION OF THE VIKING TRAIN – AZERBAIJAN Not only is AB “Lietuvos geležinkeliai” in proactive partnership with the existing members of the Viking train project in Turkey, Ukraine, the Balkan and Caucasus states, but it also designs new routes for this container train. In May this year, the Azerbaijan Railways officially joined the project. According to Stasys Gudvalis, the Deputy CEO of AB “Lietuvos geležinkeliai”, this partnership is an important step in expanding the geographical scope of the Viking train that will allow increasing the freight traffic volumes towards the East–West. “Our goal remains the same, i.e. to position the Viking train project as a transport and logistics bridge between Europe and Asia and the 8 countries within the Black Sea basin. Now that the Azerbaijan Railways have joined the project, there is a chance to attract freight travelling not only from Azerbaijan, but also from Kazakhstan and China to the transport corridor that links the Baltic and the Black seas by offering freight transportation via the Dostyk–Aktau–Baku–Poti–Odessa/ Illichivsk route”, – said Mr S. Gudvalis. The partnership in connection with the development of the mentioned project began in Georgia where an annual meeting of the members of the Viking train project was held. This year, the key issues were discussed at a meeting held in Lithuania between representatives of AB “Lietuvos geležinkeliai”, the Azerbaijan Railways, ADY Express and Karvan Logistics. Karvan Logistics is seeking to provide the best services in terms of door-to-door freight carriage and restore the historic route of the Silk Road. The company offers all railway-related container transportation and handling services between Turkey and Central Asia. At present, universal and special-purpose 20 and 40 foot containers are carried on board of container train “Viking train” from the Scandinavian and the Western European countries bound for Belarus, Ukraine, the Middle East, the Caucasus and Turkey and return. 6,606 thousand containers were carried on board of this train over the first quarter of this year. A NEW LOCOMOTIVE The Vilnius Locomotive Repair Depot that manufactures produce for AB “Lietuvos geležinkeliai” is expanding the scope of its services. The company has presented a modernised locomotive TGM4 No 2662 intended for the company “Dolomitas”. It is the first case where a product made by the Vilnius Locomotive Repair Depot will be used for the needs of a private company as opposed to the needs of AB “Lietuvos geležinkeliai”. As part of the modernisation of a used shunter, a new Caterpillar C27 IIIB ACERT internal combustion engine, an AKG cooling system and a modern locomo- tive control system were installed therein. Individual parts thereof have also been updated, i.e. the driving cab, the frame and chassis of the locomotive, the trucks, the hydro-gear, the auxiliary power equipment, etc. Thanks to these updates, the life-span of the locomotive was extended by a decade and the fuel consumption was reduced by 30 per cent. The updated locomotive will be used in the Lithuanian market. The Vilnius Locomotive Repair Depot is a subsidiary of AB “Lietuvos geležinkeliai” and the first one in the Baltic region to provide locomotive and road machinery manufacture and rolling-stock repair services. 9 << TO CONTENTS STABLE GROWTH The movements undertaken by AB “Lietuvos geležinkeliai” were steadily growing at the beginning of 2016. According to the data provided by the Freight Transportation Directorate, 11.5 million tonnes of freight were transported via the Lithuanian railways over the first quarter of the year, which is around 2.5 per cent more than same time last year. The transportation of the majority of freight (8.15 million tonnes) was undertaken on international routes and 3.35 million tonnes were carried on local ones. Most of the freight carried during the mentioned period accounted for the imported freight (44 per cent of all freight). Local routes accounted for 29 percent, transit – 19 per cent and exports reached 8 per cent. The increased volume of produce owned by the clients of AB “Lietuvos geležinkeliai”, i.e. AB “Orlen Lietuva” and Belarusian plants, determined the increase of oil and oil product traffic by 17.2 per cent. In quarter 1 of 2016, such movements accounted for 4 million tonnes. The transportation of certain types of produce saw a decrease, i.e. movements of fertilisers and metals were decreasing. Most of the freight was transported to Belarus as well as Russia, Poland and Latvia. The most popular produce included fertilisers, oil and oil products, metals, chemicals products, timber, containers, etc. 10 I 2016 11.5 quarter II IV III m. t. Wood granules produced in Lithuania were exported to Italy on board of the very first route of the train “Milano express”. The train returned full of Italian food products intended for the market of the Baltic States. The Milano express train carries freight via the Kaunas–Milan route through Warsaw and Ludwigshafen. It takes 7 days to have the freight delivered one way. Mostly produce made by the Lithuanian industry is exported, whereas household appliances and plumbing supplies as well as finishing materials and food products are imported using this route. The imported pro- duce is serviced at the KIT which has the capacity of 1,120 TEU and is capable of having over 180 containers transshipped a day. Girmantas Praninskas, the CEO of company “Granulita” that has already tested the transportation on board of the new train, says that as a result of the embargo, the number of trucks travelling to the Western Europe has decreased; transport costs have increased; hence, the ability to transport the produce by train is a good alternative. The Milano express train runs one service a week. Regular container transportation between Lithuania and Italy is guaranteed by the fact that they have been transported on the Šeštokai Express train which has been successfully running for four years now. Since 2005 the company has acquired 1,190 new freight wagons of different kinds for carrying freight. It is planned to add 50 new freight wagons intended for carrying cement 12 to the fleet in 2016. According to the data held in May 2016, the fleet contains 8,470 freight wagons. They include universal (covered, open and flat wagons), special-purpose (tank wagons, bulk goods wagons (grain and cement wagons), dumpcars, hopper wagons, autoracks, isothermal wagons) and other types of wagons. LITHUANIA: CHINA’S GATEWAY TO EUROPE Seeking to become a key partner in logistics to China in terms of European freight, the Lithuanian Railways Company (Lith: “Lietuvos geležinkeliai”) is making its cooperation with the largest Chinese corporation ChinaMerchantsGroup more robust. The company’s successful entry into the Chinese logistics market began in 2012 when a representative office was opened in Beijing. Active business carried out through it in the local market helped the company establish itself as a reliable partner and found a joint forwarding services venture together with the ChinaMerchantsGroup. The first freight full of building materials sent by the Chinese company reached Lithuania in 2016. AB “Lietuvos geležinkeliai” has handled the containers and delivered them successfully to the Great Stone industrial park that is presently being built in Minsk. The company is expecting to become the key logistics partner to the companies established in the mentioned industrial park. Another priority of AB “Lietuvos geležinkeliai” lies in the freight carriage to Europe from China via Kazakhstan and Lithuania. Lithuania has appropriate infrastructural road and railway links with the Western Europe as well as modern intermodal terminals that give competitive advantage in terms of freight handling and delivery price, speed and quality. “It is high time we exploited the synergy of the entire infrastructure held. Lithuania certainly has all prerequisites to become a transit country for Chinese freight”, – said Rima Terminaitė, the Head of the company’s unit “LG ekspedicija”. New container trains that will allow making a better use of the infrastructure at Šeštokai Railway Station are also in the near future plans of AB “Lietuvos geležinkeliai”. If the plans were implemented, Lithuania would become a key transit country for the traffic of freight carried on the Europe–China route. ChinaMerchantsGroup has officially acknowledged the Port of Klaipėda to be a strategic port for freight originating from China and the Lithuanian Railways company to be a strategic partner for carriage by road. 13 << TO CONTENTS STRENGTHENING PARTNERSHIP AB “Lietuvos geležinkeliai” actively attends international fairs every year where not only does it present its services to potential customers, but also strengthens its cooperation with existing business partners for strategic projects.
