A History of Showcasing Tomorrow’s Stars
One of golf’s major championships for juniors, the Junior PGA
Championship is where the best in the world get their start.
Begun in 1976, at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla., the
Championship has been a popular stop on the national junior circuit
for many of today’s PGA and LPGA touring professionals.
The Junior PGA Championship then moved to Callaway Gardens
in Mountain View, Ga., in 1978, and two years later was contested
at PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., which would
eventually host 19 Championships over the next two decades.
The Championship also visited Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis,
Mo., in 1988 and Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort & Country Club in 1993.
The Championship returned to PGA National Golf Club in 1994 and
remained at the site until 2001. The Maxfli Golf Division served as
title sponsor of the Junior PGA Championship from 1991 to 1999.
In 2013, Trump National Golf Club – Washington, D.C., in Potomac
Falls, Va., hosted the 38th Junior PGA Championship. Both Tyler
McDaniel of Manchester, Ky., and Amy Lee of Brea, Calif., captured
titles in thrilling fashion, with both making Championship-clinching
putts on the 72nd hole.
In 2012, Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand became the first girls’ division
champion since In-Bee Park of South Korea to claim back-to-back
titles, while Robby Shelton of Wilmer, Ala., claimed the boys’ title,
which was played for a third consecutive year at Sycamore Hills Golf
Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.
In 2010, the Junior PGA Championship was punctuated by a threehole playoff that saw Cassy Isagawa of Wailuku, Hawaii, emerge as
the girls’ division champion, while Denny McCarthy of Burtonsville,
Md., claimed the boys’ division title by three strokes at Sycamore
Hills Golf Club.
In 2009, the Junior PGA Championship celebrated its ninth visit to
the state of Ohio, as the renowned TPC River’s Bend in Maineville
(Greater Cincinnati) hosted the Championship for the second
consecutive year.
Alexis Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla., captured her second Junior
PGA Championship, cruising to a 12-stroke triumph, one stroke
off the all-time record, set by Debbie Hall in 1977. The 14-year-old
Thompson, who was already competing in her fourth Junior PGA
Championship, has finished in the top-3 in each of the last three
Junior PGA Championships.
In 2007, the 12-year-old Thompson became the youngest champion
in the history of the storied Championship
With his win at the 2008 Masters Tournament, Trevor Immelman
became just the second boys’ division winner of the Junior PGA
Championship to also win a major championship. In addition,
Immelman (1996, from South Africa) became the second to achieve
PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honors.
David Toms, who won the 1984 Junior PGA Championship, also
won the 2001 PGA Championship at The Atlanta Athletic Club in
Duluth, Ga.
Also, with her victory at the 2008 U.S. Women’s Open, In-Bee Park
of Henderson, Nev./ South Korea, became the third girls’ division
winner of the Junior PGA Championship to also earn a major
championship.
Park joined a select group that included Cristie Kerr of Scottsdale,
Ariz., winner of the 1995 Junior PGA Championship and the 2007
U.S. Women’s Open; and Grace Park of Scottsdale, winner of
the 1996 Junior PGA Championship and the 2004 Kraft Nabisco
Championship.
In 2005, former Junior PGA Champion Sean O’Hair (1998) and
former PGA Junior Series winner (1996) became the first ever to
achieve PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honors. There have been four
LPGA Rookie of the Year honors to come from the Junior PGA
Girls Champion or runner-up positions: 1985 Penny Hammel (1978
Champion); 1991 Brandi Burton (1988 Champion); 2000 Dorothy
Delasin (1998 runner-up); and 2002 Beth Bauer (1997 Champion).
In 2002, former Junior PGA Champion Ty Tryon of Orlando, Fla.,
became the youngest player (age 17) to earn a PGA Tour fully
exempt playing card.
In 1990, Vicki Goetz-Ackerman, of Hull, Ga., became the first
participant to win three Junior PGA Championships (1987, ‘89,
‘90). Beth Bauer of Valrico, Fla. (1994, ‘97), the late Heather Farr
(1980, ‘82) of Phoenix, Ariz., Aree Song Wongluekiet (1999, 2000)
of Eustis, Fla./ Thailand, are the other competitors to have captured
more than one Junior PGA Championship.

to successful professional careers include: Billy Andrade, Kathy
Baker, Brandie Burton, Stewart Cink, Chris Couch, Rick Fehr,

2013 JUNIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP SUMMARY
Both Tyler McDaniel of Manchester, Ky., and Amy Lee of
Brea, Calif., captured titles in thrilling fashion at the 38th
Junior PGA Championship presented by Under Armour and
Hotel Fitness.
Both McDaniel and Lee made Championship-clinching
putts on the 72nd hole at Trump National Golf Club –
Washington, D.C., to capture the Jack Nicklaus Trophy in
the boys’ division and the Patty Berg Trophy in the girls’
division, respectively.
In the boys’ division, McDaniel shot 2-under-par 69 for a
10-under-par 274 total to win the Championship by one
stroke over Sam Burns of Shreveport, La.
In the girls’ division, Lee, who was three shots back with
three holes to play in the final round, made a dramatic
15-foot par putt on the 18th hole to shoot 69 and win by
a single stroke. Abbey Carlson of Lake Mary, Fla., the
54-hole co-leader, finished second at 280.
McDaniel, who finished eighth in the 2012 Junior PGA
Championship, was overwhelmed by the victory.
“This means a lot to me, after not quite getting the job done
last year in this event,” said McDaniel. “This is my first big
time, national win and it feels so good right now.”
Lee, who tied the female competitive course record with
67 in the third round to put herself in position to win, was
equally thrilled with her win.
“I’m excited and happy right now,” said Lee. “This is the
biggest accomplishment I have had yet in golf and I feel
honored to win this Championship. I’m a fighter and I knew
I could do it.”

of age on the final day of any event they enter. Approximately
one-half of the field consists of competitors residing within
the host PGA Section of the competition. Each series event
will feature a maximum field of 156 players. Juniors may
enter as many events as they wish. The event fields are based
on playing ability and are not first-come, first-served.
Each PGA Junior Series event has two age groups for both
boys and girls: 12-14 and 15-18.
Junior Golf from Coast to Coast Nationally recognized
by both the Golfweek Sagarin Points System and Junior Golf
Scoreboard, the PGA Junior Series debuted in the summer of
1996. The program has attracted boys and girls representing
50 states, the District of Columbia, 24 countries/territories
and six continents.
The PGA Junior Series provides affordable and competitive
playing opportunities for boys’ and girls’ between the ages
of 12-18. Some top players have received full-to-partial golf
scholarships to NCAA colleges and universities.
Through 2013, the PGA Junior Series has visited 42 states
and 38 PGA Sections. The PGA Junior Series is organized
and conducted by the PGA of America, with the support of
PGA Professionals.
Series Benefits Each PGA Junior Series event will award
points to the Top 10 finishers in the 12-14 and 15-18 age
groups in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions. Points are
compiled by The PGA of America through event No. 8 of
the Series for Player of the Year honors. Each boys’ 15-18 age
division winner and the overall girls’ division winner from
each event of the PGA Junior Series will earn a berth in the
2014 Junior PGA Championship.
